Animals (Erotic and Otherwise) in Literature
The following is a list of books, magazines, and other literary works which contain pictures or detailed descriptions of animals doing what comes naturally, or information which might be of special interest to zoos. Like most of my lists, this one is never finished, and contributions are always welcome.
Note that this list does not cover bestiality or other human/animal interaction, other than what's encountered in the veterinary field, such as controlled breeding and/or artificial insemination. For a list of specific bestiality and zoophilia references or depictions in literature, consult the official Zoophilia/Bestiality Bibliography.
Disclaimer: Please forgive me for beginning this page with a rant, but as a personal courtesy to me, and out of respect for the printed word, please do not remove pictures from books and magazines you do not own. Many of the items mentioned herein came from libraries, and I was dismayed to see that people had been there before me and defaced some of the books in an attempt to build their own collections. If you value the resource I have created here, by all means look for these books at your store or library, but find a good color scanner or photocopier and preserve these images in some way that preserves the originals, too. Or, failing that, buy the books. :)
The picture codes are the same as in my Animal Porn Overview. (The pictures with a tilde (~) after the subject are marginal in quality or detail: you'd have to be pretty desperate. :)
Books:
- author unknown. Horse Breeds.
- somewhere: Dutch draft stallion: t,p
- author unknown. title unknown. publishing data unknown.
- This news came from a mailing list I subscribe to: "...about 10 years ago, ... some mammalogist [a woman] finally had a book published which was devoted entirely to a comprehensive descriptive study of mammal penises. [One reader] described the book as 'excellent,' 'long overdue,' and 'profusely illustrated.'" Damn, I want this! Anyone heard of it?
- Alderton, David. Dogs (part of the Eyewitness Handbooks series). Dorling Kindersley, London, 1993. ISBN 1-56458-179-9, 1-56458-177-2.
- This book contains hundreds of dog photos, and is an excellent and economical guide to dog breeds. The only suggestive photos of male dogs, prominently showing both sheath and testes, are on the cover (Pharoah Hound), page 70 (Pointer), 142 (coonhound), 152 (Dunker), 161 (Polish Hound), and 250 (Dobermann), and none are what I would call erotic. There are also no suggestive photos of female dogs.
- Bagemihl, Bruce. Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity.
- An extensive textbook, with numerous photos (all B/W, IIRC, and mostly of mediocre quality) of non-heterosexual sexual activity in the animal kingdom. The author admits he's not a biologist, and personally, I think he reads too much into the "behavior" he observes, but it's still the only book I know of on the subject, and well worth a look. Salon Magazine's "Ivory Tower" website has a review of the book.

- IMHO, this book, self-described as "a lively, illustrated armchair 'field guide' to the behavior and body language of the world's most watchable zoo animals," is an excellent and highly readable textbook on animal behavior. It includes some unusually complete, detailed, and often explicit descriptions of sexual behavior, including some information I've found nowhere else: a pleasant surprise in a book which reads as though geared for the layman. The title and subtitle are delightful (but probably unintentional) double entendres. The illustrations are excellent black & white line drawings, and the artist actually draws genitals from time to time, which is again a pleasant surprise, even though they're sometimes a little vague.

- I only had a chance to browse through this, but it has pictures of a cheetah and rhino urinating, as well as turtles mating, and a rear view of a lion withdrawing after copulating with a lioness: his penis is clearly visible. - Rabelais, Francois(?). Gargantua and Pantagruel.
- A reader courteously provided this excerpt from the 16th century "smut novel"; specifically, an infamous chapter entitled 'How Panurge played a Trick on the Parisian Lady which was not at all to her advantage', where Panurge covers a woman who thwarted his affections with the scent of a bitch in heat...:
- "He said to Pantagruel: 'Master, I beg of you, come and see all the dogs, come and see all the dogs of this land, flocking round a lady! She is the most beautiful lady in the town, and they want to roger her!'
- "Pantagruel very gladly accepted this invitation and went to see the show, which he found very fine and original. But the best of it all was the procession, in which more than six hundred thousand and fourteen dogs were seen all around her, bothering her greatly, and everwhere she passed fresh hosts of dogs followed her trail, pissing in the road where her gown had touched it.
- "Everyone stopped to see the show, gazing with admiration at the dogs, who leapt as high as her neck and spoiled all her fine clothes. For this she could find no other remedy but to retire into her mansion. So she ran to hide, with the dogs after her and all the chambermaids laughing. But once she was inside and the door closed behind her, all the dogs ran up from two miles around, and pissed so hard against the gate of the house, that they made a stream with their urine big enough for the ducks to swim in. And it is this stream which now passes by Saint Victor, in which Madame Gobelin dyes her scarlet, thanks to the specific virtue of those piss-hounds, as our Master Dungpowder once proclaimed in a public sermon..."

Advertisements (blatant and merely suggestive):
- Apple Computer.
- Shows a G-rated picture of a Jack Russell Terrier standing on its hind legs, looking at a PowerBook on someone's desk. I can't tell if it's male or female, and its anus is in shadow.
- Minnesota Compulsive Gambling Hotline.
- Shows a G-rated picture of a female greyhound with a racing vest. The slogan above reads, "Are you losing your husband to some skinny bitch?"
- Northwestern National Life. (health insurance)
- A dog is riding a tricycle, and you can see into its crotch. It appears to be female, from the small photo I have, but it's also long-haired, so I doubt you could see anything anyway.

To Be Determined:
(These books are ones which came to my attention by various means, but which I haven't yet perused myself. If you've read or looked through them, let me know.)
- author unknown. The Animal Family.
- I saw some line drawings of animals mating, and a series of a zebra giving birth, but I only had a chance to browse through it. I'll try to get a longer look.
- author unknown. Head Press.
- This may be a magazine rather than a book. Publisher's address: 40 Russell Avenue, Radcliffe, Manchester M26 1JD England. ISBN 1-900486-02-4. This book is described in the Fortean Times as having (among other things) "ah...er...animal pornography." Has anyone seen this?
- Edwards, Elwyn Hartley. The Ultimate Horse Book.
- Masson, Jeffrey Moussaieff; and McCarthy, Susan. When Elephants Weep
- "As the title suggests, the book is at times stuffed with purple prose and given to melodramatic statements. But it has its interesting points. Basically, it is a non-fiction treatise on the emotional life of animals, and again, theorizes about the inability of most human creatures to ascribe feeling to their four-legged brethren."
