The Lair has stories that require story codes because of their content. Presently there is a very long novel (Switch), several novelettes (Julie, Driving Lessons, The Urinal, The Pullover, and Cecilia) and three short stories (Clara, Lynn and Glass Half Full).

Two things happened at the same instant. I realized they were playing with her, taunting her deliberately. They knew she didn't want foreplay. They knew this finger play was driving her crazy. At that instant the girl next to me put her hand on mine and squeezed. Her lips were moving as she watched Marianne. Perhaps she only now realized Marianne was having orgasms, there in front of everyone, all measure of modesty dropped. Marianne was their common toy.

Brian's in high school in 1959. He has a girlfriend, Candy. Marianne is giving him driving lessons. Sybil thinks he's the guy to take her friend's virginity. And then there's the girl, he doesn't know her name. Each one takes him a little further on life's bumpy road.

No, that wasn't true at all. Some part of her enjoyed being the center of attention. Thrived on what they said about her and what they did to her. How they didn't really care. She was a hole to them. A willing hole. Their bucket.

Written from three different viewpoints. Clara, who she is and what she does, is barely understood by those who know her, including Clara herself.

Lynn lived for the moment; at least that's how I see it now. Being in that moment was what was important. She herself could only get there by saying yes or sure (my favorite word in the English language because of how she said it). She had to be open for the moment, always ready. My job was to present moments -- either myself or others -- or appreciate the moments she collected by happenstance.

Lynn quit college at the end of her freshman year but ends up back on campus needing a place to stay for a while. Lynn is passed along to Greg by his roommate and he remembers what it was like back in 1968.

Del thought it was extremely strange to have been doing those things to Sharon while Spot and Penny watched. It was hard enough in the plain day to day to know what Penny thought. With Spot it didn't really matter because she was a dog, but Penny wasn't quite a pony yet. Not by a long way.

Cecilia is many people: a mother, a beautiful woman, a person obsessed with sex. She finds it impossible to switch identities — they overlap. Or at least they used to overlap. Now they are muddled, her obsessions running rampant.

This novel takes place in 1958 in an unnamed US Gulf Coast community. There are four parts, : Switch, The Babysitter, Comes the Bride and The Revolver. It is recommended that the reader begin with Switch and then proceed to the other parts.
