Chapter Thirty-three

Sunday
December 21, 1958

Kitty watched Greg wheel his chair up the ramp into the house from the garage. She heard the kids, smiled to herself and bent to finish making the bed. She laid the covers over the pillows which finished the task.

Winifred had already started breakfast. With so many, it was easiest just having cereal and orange juice for the kids, cereal or toast with coffee for the adults.

Hetty and Patty waited at the table as the boys brought the bowls and silverware from the kitchen. Gladys, then Penny joined them.

Kitty walked into the living room where Greg was. He liked a few minutes of quiet before entering the hubbub. She went to the girls' room to call Fancy and Mary. She didn't see them.

She went to the dining room via the foyer, didn't see them that way either. No problem. They were somewhere. She sat at the table next to Penny and took several pieces of buttered toast from the plate.

Just plain toast and coffee. She looked past Penny into the back yard. She heard Mary and Fancy come into the room. Four girls, two boys. One man and three women, she included Winifred with them, it was quite a horde.

Kitty watched Winifred carry Greg's tray to the living room. Winifred usually sat and chatted with him while he ate. Kitty set her cup back on the saucer and wondered how it would eventually work out. The three of them sharing the bed, Kitty joining the other women in her old room, there were countless possibilities.

She watched Mary and Walter. Mary was cruel to him, with a smile. Never cruel enough to drive him away, she was defining the limits of his boyish sphere. Walter had run smack dab into the feminine, poor fellow. He looked lost and utterly captivated.

Kitty finished her toast and carried her cup into the living room. She figured if she watched Greg and Winifred it would drive them to more extreme measures.

Greg never told her who his favorite was. He had tried all of Johnny's girls and they had tried him. She knew he had a soft spot for Eve, everybody did.

Kitty picked up the junior college course catalog from the coffee table and continued marking courses which appealed to her. She heard Winifred laugh, looked up and saw Winifred walk away from Greg with his tray, her fingers lightly brushing his shoulder.

Greg was actually blushing when he turned to her. She gave him a smile and returned to her catalog. She'd give them all another fifteen minutes and then she'd begin cleaning up. It was her turn to do the dishes.

This afternoon they would start decorating the house for Christmas. She couldn't wait.

Gloria heard them run down the stairs, then slow and finish the last few steps with grace. Joey was a stunner, sixteen, blonde, tall and gorgeous. Gail and Lisa trailed her; the trio were inseparable.

"Have you seen Romeo and Juliet?" Gloria asked.

The girls just giggled. Joey pointed upstairs and they all started to laugh, covering their mouths.

Gloria wondered where Matt had found them. They were in no better shape than his previous girls, maybe only slightly better treated than his sister.

Gloria knocked on Juliet's door. It was Romeo's, too, might as well admit it. The silence that followed the knock was laughable. Who did they think they were fooling?

"We need you downstairs in two minutes," Gloria said. She left them.

Gloria's room, their room, Gloria's, Darlene's and Tiger's was the one that Eve and Lori had called theirs a little over a week ago. The House had changed since then. Neva still lived here, Romeo and Juliet, and the three girls. She doubted The House at its loudest before was any louder than it was now.

Gloria slowly walked down the stairs. Michael and Shirley along with Connie were living in her old house. She wondered what the neighbors thought. It didn't matter to her really.

The living room was pure pandemonium. She loved it — everyone talking at once. Darlene and Tiger sat on one couch; she joined them. The girls were on the other. They waited for Romeo and Juliet to appear.

The girls giggled when they heard them on the stairs. Romeo followed Juliet in the room; they sat on the floor under the window.

Everyone begin to talk. Gloria said. "It's time for our meeting. We'll draw for days for the schedule next week. The first draw is for breakfast." She took a card and passed around the deck. It took forever this way but with seven of them (Tiger didn't have to do chores yet) it seemed the fairest. Lowest card got Monday, highest got Sunday.

Darlene was smiling so she must have a high card. Darlene wore dresses full time again. Not dresses. Navy skirts, bobby socks, white blouses and sweaters. She was unbearably cute.

Gloria glanced at her card. Ten of hearts.

They always had an argument over whether hearts was higher than diamonds and the order of suits. It kept everyone on their toes.

Maeve stepped into Johnny's room and carefully shut the door behind her. Somehow Johnny always got the prettiest nurses. This one was beautiful. She was fluffing his pillow, chattering about what happened on her date last night.

Maeve sat in the chair, not the one next to his bed, and waited with her pocketbook on her lap.

The nurse turned and smiled. "Why, hello. I didn't hear you come in. I'm almost done." She turned back to Johnny, flicked a stray hair out of his eyes, and talked about where her date had taken her.

Johnny looked at Maeve and winked. He was silent while the nurse finished taking his blood pressure. She rolled up the cuff, made a note on the chart.

The nurse patted his arm. "You're due to go home tomorrow. You need to rest. Take it easy for a week or two."

"Listen to her, Johnny," Maeve said as she rose to her feet. She asked the nurse. "Would it be possible to lock the door for fifteen minutes so we can be alone together?"

The nurse gave her a broad smile. "His wife this morning was excitement enough. I've never seen a man with so many girlfriends."

"I'm his wife," Maeve said.

Johnny shrugged his shoulders and said to the nurse, "Maeve is my wife, Sylvia."

"Then who was that other woman?" The nurse stared at Maeve. She turned to Johnny. "You are a rascal, aren't you?" She said as she passed Maeve, "I won't need to check on him until four."

Maeve studied the nurse as she walked past. Sylvia knew she was beautiful. She must have someone tailor her uniforms for her. Her hair was just right, she bore herself well. What made her beautiful was how she was able to control her movements and face.

The door clicked shut. Maeve stepped over and turned the lock button. She faced Johnny. "This morning?"

"Sylvia was joking. Eve came to visit and they've become fast friends. Sylvia sympathizes with Eve's condition."

"It's a condition now, is it?" Maeve set her purse on the chair. She unbuttoned her jacket.

"There's a medical term for it, believe it or not."

"I always believe you, Johnny." Maeve unbuttoned her blouse.

"So Sylvia lets Eve lock the door so she can undress. It wouldn't do to have an intern stumble in."

"He'd realize there were fine points he missed when he studied anatomy."

Johnny smiled. "Eager to have me home?"

Maeve laid the blouse on the chair. "Eve and Lori are living in the garage. You'll love it at home, Johnny."

"I've missed you, Maeve."

Maeve undid the clasp for her skirt and the zipper. She stepped out of the skirt and set it on the chair.

She still wore her heels. She walked across the room, feeling his eyes on her. She stopped and turned. "Did you think about it any last night? In between visits with your girlfriends, you rascal you?" She walked across the room. She took extra effort to have her hips sway in rhythm to the sound of her shoes on the linoleum floor. She stopped.

"I agree wholeheartedly." Johnny grinned at her. He lifted the covers.

"You'll separate yourself more from the activities of your girls?"

Johnny opened the covers for her. "Maeve, what got me shot was the kids not the girls."

Maeve walked abruptly to the bed. "What got you almost arrested was the photographs in the house. Your records." She turned and walked to the corner of the room. "Did you need to mark down how many men the girls fucked?" She walked to the bed and leaned to him, hands on the sheet next to his hip. "It was embarrassing."

"Are they going to give them back?"

"They've lost them, Johnny. Move over." Maeve lay next to him. "Gladys destroys her records each day, once the girls are paid. Who cares how many men we fuck?"

"I certainly don't. You're still a mite bit angry over last week, aren't you?"

Maeve laid her head on his shoulder. His wound was on his right side, that shoulder and his chest were still bandaged. She wasn't looking forward to changing his bandages and seeing it. "Imagine if it had been me, Johnny. You do care for me a little bit don't you? I can't bear the thought of you dying."

Johnny held her close to him and used his other hand to lay the covers over them both.

"I wasn't too happy with the idea of dying myself. I want to grow old with you."

"Gloria and Beth had a nautical adventure Wednesday."

"How'd they like it?"

"I think Gloria is getting better. She was crazy when you were shot. Crazy calm. She and Darlene went out and rounded up Matt's girls. She and Darlene moved the kids into The House last Saturday. She waves that black Lothario in front of her neighbors' faces like a red cape in front of a bull. The neighbors see the sword behind the cape and draw back. Some of them know what really happened Friday. They like the police as much as we do, your friend Steve excepted, so nobody said anything. Besides, the boy who shot that man hasn't been seen around any more."

"Tired of talking?" Johnny kissed her forehead.

"What was Eve up to in here with you? Just so I know."

"She sat on the bed and we talked. That's all."

Maeve snuggled against him. "You're leaving that nurse alone, aren't you?"

"She has a boyfriend already." Johnny took her fingers and felt along them.

"He any good to her?"

"What do you think?" Johnny set her hand on his stomach.

"Is that thing tied in back?"

Johnny shook his head.

Maeve opened his gown, lifted it over his head.

"Maybe you should talk to her."

Maeve held his cock. "Al and his crew seem to be enjoying the attention at the studio. They're working nights."

Johnny watched her as she knelt above him, holding his cock next to her pussy.

Maeve slowly lowered herself onto him. She leaned toward him and they kissed. She squeezed his cock with her pussy. She watched his eyes and gave a smile as she sat herself upright. "I've been practicing. Just shut your eyes and pretend I'm Gloria."

"How do you know that?" He shut his eyes.

Maeve concentrated on his cock, moving her body slightly as she squeezed his cock rhythmically. "I'm a rascal, also, Johnny. Don't talk."

Johnny read after Maeve left. He had two books. Maeve had brought him a copy of A Tale of Two Cities. It was okay but Johnny had a hard time not falling asleep. Things were boring enough here. His other book was Spillane's potboiler, My Gun Is Quick, which was pure trash. Johnny didn't have the anticommunist fervor that was required in order to believe the lurid prose. He liked the sex scenes; otherwise it was laughable.

Johnny sometimes wondered if he could write a novel. He didn't know what he could write about. He was pretty much an average guy. He lucked into marrying an incredible woman. Otherwise he was pretty humdrum. No hobbies. No enthusiasms like sports.

Johnny pulled the Spillane paperback out from beneath the covers. He was grinning at one of the hero's speeches — the hero was a fool — when he heard the door open.

"Knock, knock," Gloria said. She entered with Darlene and beautiful Joey, Matt's former girl.

Joey leaned against the closed door as Gloria sat in the chair next to him and Darlene sat in the chair across from the foot of the bed. Joey smiled shyly and watched him wide-eyed.

Johnny winked at her.

"How are you doing?" Gloria asked. She picked up the paperback and studied the cover. She laid it down and took his hand.

"Home tomorrow, the doctor says." He gave her fingers a squeeze. "Maeve is preparing."

"Calling the florist." Gloria grinned. "How can you read that trash?"

"She'll have the whole house painted, new furniture, I won't know the place. Eve's putting her foot down and absolutely refuses to wear a maid's uniform."

"Good for her."

"Why don't you sit on the bed?" Johnny said to Joey. "I read it because it is trash. Good literature puts me asleep in here."

Joey sat on the edge of the bed next to his feet.

"The blood on the walk is still there," Darlene said. "Even though it's rained."

"You haven't told the kids where it came from, have you?"

"Of course she has, Johnny," Gloria said.

"And how Gloria shot him, saving your life. No one argues with Gloria, do they Joey?" Darlene said. She put her feet on the bed.

Johnny smiled at her. "Thanks again."

Darlene shook her head. "I hope I never see him."

Gloria squeezed Johnny's hand. "Joey had something to ask you."

Johnny turned to Joey.

"I wondered if it was all right if I visited you?"

"I told her you live on the water," Darlene said.

"Ever been in a boat?" Johnny asked.

Joey shook her head.

"Can you swim?"

"The only one in The House who can swim is me, Johnny," Gloria said.

"Then swimming lessons next summer. We'll get a dingy. Would you like that, Joey? And weekends at the beach?"

Joey slowly nodded. "I don't mind working."

Gloria touched Joey's leg. "Don't worry about that for now. Besides, Johnny's not that kind of man."

"Seeing Joey, he's getting ideas, aren't you?" Darlene asked. She grinned at him.

"You are a beautiful young girl. Gloria says you're smart. Have Gloria take you to Kitty's. Talk with Winifred. She's just a little older than you. She makes five thousand a year plus bonuses."

"And a car," Darlene said.

"A car and four weeks vacation."

Joey glanced at Gloria. "He's joking with me, isn't he?"

Gloria shook her head. "She started at what, Johnny?"

"Fifty a week."

Darlene laughed. "She works her ass off, Joey. There are easier ways."

"Our devil's advocate. How easy was it, Joey?" Gloria asked.

Johnny watched Darlene's face.

Joey shook her head.

"Take her to Kitty's after here. You need help. If she can do it, she's hired."

"It means you have to go on special dates with Johnny, though," Darlene said. "Out to eat, a fancy restaurant, maybe even a glass of wine."

"We talk business."

"Then a movie afterwards. He doesn't even paw you." Darlene made a face.

Joey turned to Johnny. "Darlene is just upset because I never did it with her."

"Damn right, I'm upset." Darlene laughed. "It was fun putting you through your paces."

"You showed an abnormal amount of glee."

"I'll still beat Winifred, Johnny. Just you see." Darlene touched her brow and did a salute.

Johnny blew her a kiss and she held it to her breast. She giggled.

Gloria took Johnny's hand. "We'll go to Kitty's next. Does Maeve need any help tomorrow? I'm off all day."

"Call her. She'll want to hear your voice anyway. I understand you had fun Wednesday."

"Another two for her ass," Darlene said. She popped her hand over her mouth. She stood. "Come on, Joey. They want to be alone."

Gloria kissed him as the door shut behind them. "Another two for my ass."

"And Beth?"

"She liked it. Jerry and Charles drove us home afterwards. Jerry likes kids."

"Sorry about Al."

"We're just taking a break. Most of the girls have nothing to do except pester him and his crew. At least the streets are safe."

"Still sorry."

"I'm not ready yet. Jerry can visit when he wants. If I'm not there, Connie or Neva is. The kids like him."

"Call Maeve for me. Tell her how much I love her."

"I've heard rumors about Eve."

"Partly true. We're friends. We talk."

"Talk?"

"Well, you know Eve." Johnny rolled his eyes.

Gloria and he kissed. "We'd better go."

"You'll come around next week."

"Every day."

"And things are okay for you?"

"Better, Johnny. They're getting better. I'm happy with my friends. I have my work."

"Would it be easier if you set up one of the studios as a classroom?"

"We shouldn't mix them together, Johnny." Gloria stood.

"You see something, vacant storefront, anything, you tell Maeve."

Gloria smiled. She bent and they kissed. "When it gets warmer I want you to take me out to the beach. Just us."

"I promise, Gloria. Just us."

Gloria touched his face then left.

He lay on his back and just let his mind roam. He couldn't wait to get home tomorrow. At least he could listen to records and Maeve would be close. He'd try to get her to take time off. Maybe in a week or so they could take a couple of days and go somewhere.

He heard the door open. Sylvia walked into the room.

"Last one?" she asked.

He slowly nodded.

She turned the lock button and walked toward his bed unbuttoning her uniform.

Johnny watched her for a moment and then moved the books to the bedstand. She joined him, naked except for her cap.

Maeve was going to kill him but what was he supposed to do? Sylvia had an absolute dope for a boyfriend. Johnny hoped Sylvia was teaching her boyfriend what he showed her. He hoped she didn't appear on his doorstep next week, bag in hand.

Kitty and Gloria lay on Kitty's bed. It was nice to be able to shut the door for a few moments. The kids were used to it. Adults' doors closed sometimes.

Kitty touched Gloria's stomach, felt the ring of soft flesh around her deep navel, felt her pubic hairs and touched her pussy.

Gloria's hands wandered over Kitty's shoulders and breast. Gloria touched her cheek and brought Kitty's face to hers to kiss.

Kitty's fingers moved in Gloria's pussy, they danced, asked questions then gave answers. Gloria laid her head back on the pillow and arched her back. Kitty took Gloria's nipple in her mouth and closed her teeth gently on it and pulled.

Gloria's face now was different from her daytime face; it was different from her sleeping face. The skin was without creases or wrinkles, it seemed to glow. Gloria's mouth was partially open and Kitty could see Gloria's tongue move, press her teeth.

Gloria tipped toward Kitty, her hands on the bed, knees and hips toward Kitty. Her body shook.

Kitty shut her eyes and tried to imagine what Gloria was thinking. A line of sailors waiting their turn, men on a Pier climbing one by one into a car, Johnny and Maeve together with her.

Gloria pulled Kitty to her and shook. She rubbed her nose against Kitty's ear. "I love you," she said.

Kitty kissed Gloria. "I love you." Kitty held her for a few moments then got off the bed. She put on her robe and went into the house. She didn't think Greg would mind taking a turn. Then Penny, then Gladys. Gloria was going to get fucked silly tonight.

Darlene, Winifred and Joey laughed at something Darlene said when she walked past. Kitty just ignored them.

Maeve lay between Lori and Eve. Since Lori and Eve found it impossible to keep their hands off each other Maeve thought this was the best place to be. Eve was doing something. Maeve ignored her for a bit.

Maeve wanted to have a party when Johnny got back. Johnny wasn't up to too much at first. He still seemed pretty weak. She thought she'd arrange it so that two or three of the girls would join them every night. Not always Eve and Lori, though Eve was plainly Johnny's current favorite. Somewhere below Kitty and Gloria and above Penny and Gladys. Maeve knew she was Johnny's absolute favorite, it was just that he was a man and curiously unable to form monogamous attachments. A serious defect in the sex.

Maeve couldn't ignore Eve any longer. She whispered in Eve's ear. "We're shaving yours tomorrow. He'll want you utterly naked when you go with me to pick him up from the hospital."

Eve's fingers moved even faster. Lori got onto her knees and swung a leg over Maeve's head. Lori slowly settled her pussy on Maeve's mouth as Eve brought Maeve to a climax.

Maeve tasted Lori, she used her hands to part Lori's lips and move pubic hairs out of the way. This one gets shaved also, she thought. She felt Eve's lips on her bare pussy.
