I wouldn't say it was rigged, but it was a publicity stunt and nothing else. They weren't testing the limits of technology in general, but only the skill of the programmers who worked on that particular code.

And in any case the whole project wasn't designed very well to start with... there are far better ways to do NLP than blindly throwing 2,880 cores at the problem.
