Regarding the hypothetical politics tag or politics board still being considered by the staff, I would just like to say I think I prefer a board due to /chat/'s language rule now. Politics will be the most likely thing to cause problems and It's probably better if it's established in advance to have politics without throwing insults at each other and if that can't be done or adequately enforced well maybe it really isn't the best idea to have politics in general.

Also, I hope it goes without saying but just in case please do not go back to /ef/ standards remotely whatever you do. Site rules should still apply lest it just become a /pol/ board.

Also this would work if the language rule doesn't apply to political tags on /chat/ too.

>due to /chat/'s language rule
What do you mean? Is /chat/'s language rule too strict or too lenient?

Mcedge!M8rdpK8q0kCountry code: blank.gif, country type: blank, valid: 18204

>>18203
It's too lenient. It allows you to call people idiots and such.

Yeah I can definitely see that being unconducive to civil political discourse. Personally I wouldn't mind just flat out going "don't insult each other at all anywhere on site" but I think that ship sailed approximately a decade ago. Although I also think it's kind of hard to draw a firm concrete line in the sand on what constitutes an insult and what doesn't. Some people might take umbrage at having their racist argument labeled as such and cry foul play, for instance.

Speaking as the person who drafted the rules for Ponyville /townhall/ with the precise intent of creating an environment where only good-faith and thoughtful discussion is allowed, striking the right balance between leniency and rigidity while also curtailing potential rules-lawyering is really difficult.

Ya and I don't think it's a good idea to just become ponyville, but when it comes to politics I think it's been a clear point of sometimes extreme hostility here and I just think this might be the only sensible way when it comes to politics. Certain freedoms can be kept elsewhere and that seems to be working well enough so far.

But ya it can definitely be tricky.

tbh the more I think about it the more I think maybe Ponychan just should not have politics at all except in like, places where it organically comes up in a conversation that didn't start there (i.e. political themes of some work of fiction or some major event affecting a poster's actual real life). This community just does not have a good track record of being able to handle "politics for politics' sake", and we can pontificate all day about what is or isn't politics but at the end of the day I think that's probably the safest place for the line to be.

I've wondered that too but that's also why I thought it'd hopefully just be able to be deleted if things go too south that way too. I'm hoping the recent realizing that /ef/ just didn't work would keep those elements out of it that would become a problem through moderation. I'd like to be able to discuss politics sometimes here, but I definitely get what you're saying and why and I really hope the staff leave open the option of just removing politics too should that start to happen and get out of control.

You're all so fucking dumb, 'waaaa delete /ef/ politics ruins everything waaa' 'yay we won we deleted /ef/.. Can we have politics in /chat/ now?'

Just fuck off

The mods are considering it, this is confirmed, the implementation is just up in the air. I never said politics in and of itself was the problem with /ef/. You are confused and I wish you'd stop being mean about this for no reason.

Nah it's not aimed at you, I did not even see you made this thread I thought it was an anon

Just aimed at the people (we all know who they are) that were screaming and crying for /ef/ to be deleted and were all happy and gloating when it was and yet they are now asking for /ef/ to be returned

I see. I'm glad it was cleared up at least. And ya I know who they are, but I'm glad you know that's not what I'm trying to do.

The problem with a separate board is that it splits up traffic. It would be less of a problem if we still had the Overpony board that collected threads from all boards.

>I think maybe Ponychan just should not have politics at all
But I've already started to miss Maroon's daily threads consisting of a screencap of a political new story! It has become a Ponychan tradition!

What about banning only personal insults (i.e., insults that are directed ad hominem rather than directed at the argument)?

I feel like multiple different people want multiple different things, and you're combining all of these wants into an imaginary amalgamation of a fake person and then getting mad at this imaginary person's conflicting wants.

Person A: I wanted /ef/ gone. Now I'm glad that it's gone.
Person B: I never wanted /ef/ gone. Bring /ef/ back!
Maroon: Why do the same people who wanted one thing now want the opposite thing?! Make up your individual mind!

Also, giving my maybe unwarranted opinion to the OP, I felt as if all of the political stuff was just as, if not more, toxic than just random slurs.

The only places I've seen politics not be insanely toxic is where everyone in the given group more or less has similar political stances. That's obviously not the case here, and I don't see how a political board where we pretend to expect everyone to just be super duper nice to each other, isn't just going to turn out just as toxic in the end.

Try r/TheMotte/ and even-numbered ACX open threads (e.g., https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/open-thread-186)

I think it is possible to have non toxic political discussion, but you will never find it in a community that is not entirely focused on politics I think.

I've certainly never seen one. Mostly because politics of sufficient disagreement tends to result in a desire to avoid or at least not invite those people.
I doubt local liberals would invite a nazi over for game night, typically.
