So, as most of you are all aware, the MLP fandom is not exactly alive and kicking anymore. We have noticed that a majority of the site is no longer really pony related in any real way outside of /pony/ and a small sprinkling of /rp/.

As such, the mod team and I have been considering opening the site up to be more of a "general" fan site. Not specifically just ponies.

What does this mean? It simply means the overall pony motif will be going away and the site will get a more fitting name not directly related to MLP.

FAQ:
Q: "Will /pony/ be deleted?"
A: No. All pony related content will remain and be allowed, we will just not be making it the main focus.

Q: "What is going to happen to /ef/, /oat/ and /chat/?"
Nothing. These boards will remain as "general purpose" boards not directly related to any fandoms.

Q: "So what is actually going to change?"
A: To be honest, not all that much. We will probably just be adding boards related to other fandoms if we see a rising interest in them. All the things you currently have shouldn't be going away.

Q: "What is the point of this?"
A: The userbase has been in on a decline for quite some time, and it's not going to pick up because of our image as a "pony" site. Anyone not interested in ponies will not come here, and anyone who is will come here and realize that we aren't really about the show anymore. It's overall just going to lead to the eventual decay and death of the site. The idea here is to make the place a bit more welcoming to other fandoms outside of pony.

Q: "When will these changes take place?"
A: Not right away. The purpose of this thread is to get feedback from the users about this proposition to ensure no one feels like they don't have a say. We will probably be leaving this thread up for about a week to field comments, questions and concerns from the users before we make a decision on how to move forward with this, so if you have an opinion about this idea, please let us know, but keep it civil.

I've come across fandoms MUCH smaller than FIM, yet they've been impactful culturally, have high quality resources and their dedicated communities.
There's 100s of brony sites out there so I wouldn't say it hurts anything with this one changing direction.

And I would like you to see that diminishing that what was once the root of your existence is not going to go the way you think. Yes, I put it quite brash, but still, there have had to been reasons why. Timing being an important factor.
For the sake of pie, G5 is right around the corner ( or at least the movie is ), if it sucks it would have made for an almost perfect 'crime', if it was awesome then it would have caused an influx of new users that could have played along with the side project as well IF you take out the doom and gloom from my original post that is. What can I say, I like hyperbole.

There is nothing desperate about this. None of this is a move to "save the site". The site is doing fine as it is. It's not in danger. Literally all we did is go, "Hey, so I noticed no one here talks about ponies anymore. Should we change the name?" and everyone was like, "Yeah. Might as well." except Mk, who basically just wanted to set this place up as an interactive museum so we just decided to make it so it could be viewed in two different ways.

It's not a big deal. You are WAY overthinking like.... All of this.

I can not help but to find a huge flaw in that, its called motivation. Either someone does not understand how motivation works or someone is lying. Good thing I have this picture on speed-dial.

Oh, you know, people stopped watching the show. Then the people who did watch the show had less people to talk to. So the community leaked members over the years. Now the show is over, so there's not really much to talk about. Maybe when G5 starts, but I don't think there's enough around who care. It's really not that complicated of a change.

If a book is named after Pokemon but once you open it up you realize its just a bunch of Naruto it begs the question why its still named after Pokemon.

There was "no motivation" to change the name until now because the mod team had been previously trying- and failing- to breathe more life into the pony aspect of the site.

It didn't work, most likely because there wasn't enough interest throughout the entire userbase, so here we are.

We're not changing the name because we're getting ready to suddenly jump ship on MLP and completely abandon it. We're changing the name because most of us lost interest years ago. A solid majority of the userbase doesn't talk/post/think about it anymore.

Again I do not know if you understand people's motivation to stay, you need a hook or something, something special, something that makes you YOU.
To shelf something that used to make you YOU is like hanging up the sword of Damocles above your head yourself.
Not only because this information would be easy to find but since the motivation behind the change seems to be 'because the user base grew away from pony'. What is this curious person who finds that information going to think ? My guess is that it is somewhere between bad and worse, and it is easy to come up with examples for the Brony community after all. After all you guys are coming up with reasons to move away from it

There is a reason why I asked why it would not be launched as a sideproject instead that would eventually transcends the 'mane' project. I never got an answer to that, I insinuated myself that it would be like that. If the userbase really does not want to pony anymore then the transition would go smooth enough and there would never be a sword of Damocles to speak of since you would literally have a new thing that can be made or ruined by nothing but the power of its own .

I do not think I could be clearer on this, my woes so to speak . At the same time I am afraid that you guys are not even willing to answer my questions or even adress my issues. If we split our community by keeping ponychan alive and making a new chan for the people who want to move on, that's it. This community is dead. We cannot support that kind of split. It will create more problems that it would solve.

It's not as simple as "just make a new one if you wanna be something different". We literally do not have the numbers to support that kind of decision.

So wait, let me check if I've got this new set of discussion right, since it's that range of late and early that well these are a lot of text walls to read.

The people complaining about the site changing now are people who mostly post on a highly Generalized Chan site, one might even say The Highly Generalized Chan site, on their My Little Pony board....

And they're mad at us for daring to not focus entirely on Friendship is Magic for our entire site, even though uh, 4Chan also doesn't feel the need to?

And they're also maybe going to be mad at me specifically for pointing this out despite probably being people who are only into My Little Pony because of Gen4 in the first place and yet seeming to insist that they're the true fans, while I liked Gen 1 of MLP?

Does this seem about right? Like I'm not sure why determining who is the True Fans matters anymore than uh...us being a Purely Pony Chan anyways when a lot of other chans can just have one board and be just fine. Especially because uh....

To put it simply, people are capable of liking multiple things, something Bronies have shown maybe more than the usual amount of ability of doing in the past, with all the "Redrawing Characters as Ponies" or "Making Youtube Jokes of FiM Characters as Pillar Men from JoJo"...

Or making memes about how it and Touhou are the same thing.

So uh....why wouldn't we want a chan that represents that? Especially when other people just get one by default?

I am sorry, where is that exactly ? What has been done to try to get more members ? But remember, it needed to have been small or else the sudden too big influx of new users might overwhelm the mod team and destroy the 'local pub feeling' you guys have going on. Can you see the conflicting underlying tone right there ? I was halfway kidding when I said you failed pony but it might turn out that it was more true than I thought it was. Wanna know what else ? Twitter. It is being used as backup comminucation by any organisation worthy of either their or my salt. But when I go check on ponychan twitter I get 2 accounts of which neither have posted since the epidemic started.

Yes, it was terrible. I was hoping that with all the talks of how times and people and interest have changed that the same mistake would not happen twice.
Now I understand that right now you are between a rock and a hard place ( even if there is conflicting information regarding that ) and rebranding yourself ( and getting new members who are not scared away by the P word ) might seem like a not so bad idea. We're not trying to hide any skeletons. We're trying to have the name of our building describe what happens inside the building.

It absolutely is not. We aren't splitting off and making 2 websites. We're making 1 website that has 2 different modes, both of which have access to the same pages, boards, and threads.

It would be a lot more accurate to say that ponychan would become an extension of the new website. New-site would be the baseline and public face, whereas ponychan would be available for those who want to keep the old look.



Look dude, I don't even understand why you care so much. This is our space, not yours. We don't post ponies anymore, so we're changing to reflect that. If that upsets you, then sorry, but you don't post here and are only showing up to tell us that we "aren't real MLP fans" when we are literally agreeing with that statement.

I am not a fan of My Little Pony anymore. I, and many others here, haven't been for years. We're still here because we're all friends, and I don't understand why us changing what we look like has a big enough impact on you to have you come here to tell us how stupid of an idea it is.

We don't post a lot of ponies, we are changing to reflect that. We are not abolishing ponies nor are we banning the posting of ponies.

We are just changing the name to reflect that the content here is far more general than what a chan specific to a single fandom would have.

I have already said that I have no bartering position whatsoever, I litterally can not keep you from doing anything. Worst of all I do not even lurk enough to understand when the majority started to feel this way, Something had to be done back then, Yet people are saying "good to see you, have not seen you in a while" to BMO and TGSB in THIS thread. The iron should have been struck when it was hot. The optics are all bad and the delay in doing 'something' has only assured a more and more ugly 'breakaway', regardless if we are getting 2 doors or you start to build a new clubhouse.

Would you rather I just kept lurking and then one day just as quietly leave because the pony content has drought up more than the other content I like to lurk? If I were in your shoes I would have, that way there would only be one 'loser' when ponychan becomes a statistic.

I can't tell you, But I can tell you I was not on some normie 9 to 5 job, and I am a big workaholic even in the eyes of normal workaholics.
Then everything changed once everything went to gridlock in the corona times. I do not think there is anyone whom is not going at least stir-crazy.
( Part of the reason why I think a "new clubhouse" idea should have been brought forth near the start of it all actually )

Ah ha! I figured out why I feel like I'm intruding in the OOC /rp/ chats!

The top has all these tags, including "Ask/Invite"
While way at the end in regular size text it says "So don't be shy! Come ooon in!"

I wouldn't even have read that far because it seems like an exclusive club. I see the big black box that says "Ask/Invite" and it's like "Ah, this must be game talk and game talk only. But, you know, out of character."

So, if I never intended to actually join the rp itself because I don't got time commitment for play by post stuff, I'd see it as sorta not my place to be.

I knew I wasn't being shy or weird or something about it! There really IS something that makes it feel out of bounds for me!

So, its been over a week now, and i think we have sorted out everything ITT that we are going to sort out and the compromises have all been made with ample opportunity for everyone in the community to have their say.

Here is the run down:
>There will be a new URL for the site, and using that URL will mean you will see new theming while you are here (TBD)
>"ponychan.net" will remain an active URL and will display the site as it currently stands with no change.
>The boards that currently exist will continue to for the foreseeable future.
>Both URLs will access the same data so posts/boards/ect will be accessible reguardless of which you choose to use so the change is only that of aesthetics and there is no "split".

This way, users can choose if they want the new look, and the new name, and others can continue to use/return to the site they are use to seeing.

Its been a heck of a discussion, but it think we hashed it out well, and i think this is a way to move forward that anyone can reasonably say gives both sides of the debate pretty much 100% what they want. Which is rear, so we should be proud haha.

So, that being the case, this thread will be locked, and we will be moving on.
