Getting cryptocurrency isn't the problem. You can buy a miner and mine your own. The problem is converting cryptocurrency to fiat. That's where all the stupid anti-(money laundering) and KYC laws fuck things up.

Coinbase is a legit company. They're probably less likely to lose or misuse your personal information than the government is. And the KYC/AML laws are real and Coinbase does need to comply with them.

Coinbase was built with security from the ground up. If you're worrying about Coinbase but don't have a security freeze on your credit reporting (thanks for the breach, Equifax!), you should think more about your threat models.

I guess I see where you're coming from. A few years ago I gave the govt a shitload of my personal information including my fingerprints and what psychiatrist I was seeing. Then, thanks to govt mismanagement and incompetency, Chinese hackers exfiltrated all of it from OPM.
