And I suspect many others feel the same way, even if they don't say it because, you know, they don't really care anymore.
I was hoping the movie could make me excited for the show again, but it did not. Pretty animation, but terrible writing. I could go into detail on what I didn't like, but again, it's just not something I care to discuss anymore.
And if you still care, that's great. I don't want to tell anyone what to do. I'm just trying to give at least one perspective on why most people stopped discussing it. That being said, and this is not to tell you or anyone else what to do, but I do occasionally respond to pony threads on /oat/ when I see them - I just don't really bother to seek those discussions out. But when it does come up, such as here, I don't mind responding. I'm just not gonna go to a board specifically for that purpose anymore.
EDIT: Oh, and as for what made the first seasons special, I think it was the emphasis on healthy social interactions and relationships between individuals who were all a bit crazy. I'm sure it sounds weird, but the stories were generally more of a backdrop for character interactions that, while occasionally over-the-top, were largely down to earth, with the stories also being fairly grounded (In-universe, mind - reasoning with a dragon is obviously not grounded in our universe, but it was a very calm and reasonable way to resolve that story if we take the whole giant dragon thing as normal). It was nice to see, it gave fuzzy, warm feelings.
Contrast that with the newer episodes where this sort of thing does happen, but it's more likely that the characters are vastly exaggerated or act out of character to service the plot, or that it's all about some magical nonsense like collecting the six magical objects to defeat the evil Tirek who's sucking the magic out of everyone, but can't be allowed to have the alicorn magic, so Twilight has a magic duel with him, but he uses his magic to blow up her library, and then he defeats her and takes her magic, but then they all come together and get super-powered new magic forms which defeat Tirek with the magic of friendship, and then Twilight gets a new magical castle. Magic, magic, magic. And incidentally, to pre-empt the question, I think the second half of the season one opening two-parter was one of the weakest parts of the season for this particular reason.
I think that stuff like moving from the library to a friggin' castle, and Twilight suddenly being a super-powerful alicorn, and all that stuff are all major indicators of how the show has left its more grounded roots behind, which is what I liked about the first couple seasons (And still like when it shows up again).
