It's a pity because I would really like a proper redemption arc for Sprout.
I mean, if you think about it he was mostly a victim to his mothers own propaganda as well as bad parenting. Since the end of MLP:ANG, Sprout is mostly ignored while he struggles to adapt to an entirely new status quo placed in Maretime Bay, with him demoted from deputy to janitor to his mothers building which is probably going out of business anyway.
So he somewhat became a butt of a joke to society, with the only time the mane5 acknowledging his struggles being the end A Maretime Bay Adventure.

Even former antagonists in ML:P:FiM ended up with friendship in the end. Including major villains thanks to Grogar banding Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy into a team.

While Misty is a servant to Opaline, they're obviously setting her up to make up the new "Mane Six" showing her making friends and enjoying new things. But unlike Misty who is starting to question the authority of Opaline or if there is something better for her, Sprout may still be under the thumb of his mother who would rather shun her duties as a mother.

I just think with the show mostly confined to Maretime Bay and the reoccurring theme is the adaption to this new status quo in Maretime Bay a redemption arc for Sprout would make an interesting Make Your Mark story.

I support your bid for more Sprout. I wanted him to be a part of the group since the movie. He could have filled a role of being the one who always had a lesson to learn. I'm glad he's at least still around, even if he's been fired as deputy. I hope they use him like Trixie, bringing him back into the light every now and again. I do love Misty though, so if I have to pick between them, I'm clearly in her camp. Sprout can stay too though. He's cool and has a good song.

It is nice that Hitch is one of the new Mane5 to show that even boys can be friends to girls (him being the subject of shipping is just bound to happen anyway) but nice that boy-ponies can be included as core cast members.

I like to imagine Sprout somewhat like Diamond Tiara. He is cowardly, lazy, entitled, arrogant and opportunistic, but his motivations for these traits is because he has mother issues. And given his mother inadvertedly conditioned him to believe and fear unicorns and pegasi he's struggling to find his place in new Maretime Bay.

And while he is regarded somewhat the butt of Maretime Bay society afer the events of the first movie, let's not forget he rallied a mob and because an authoritative figure of Maretime Bay all to prove to his mother he can do it. (And when he asked his mother at the end of the movie whenever he was a "bad sheriff" his mother just went back to ignoring him.)
So we shouldn't forget Sprout does have leadership skills, they're just misdirected and underneith his own insecurities and shortcomings.

I don't know if they made Sprout Cloverleaf this dynamic of a character on purpose or they just simply gave a pony mummy-issues in order to be a bad guy for the movie. Eitherway I just don't think he is properly resolved yet.
