Broad changes is right. If Sunset became friends with Shining Armor and Twilight...man, stuff could've been way different.

She's already learned friendship at this point, making her the successor and possible element of magic. Twilight would no longer be taken on as a replacement student, and neither would be sent to Ponyville to make friends. Twilight's fate might redirect to being the student of her brother's new girlfriend, Sunset Shimmer, rather than her current tutor.

The Elements of Harmony would be completely different, with Sunset as the core. Though Shining Armor's close relationship might lead to a spot on the team. Maybe this couple would be all there is, like Celestia and Luna covered the whole bunch back in the day. They could probably deal with Nightmare Moon and Discord as they stand, but what would happen with Chrysalis?

Presumably, she'd still want to invade, but will she still mimic Cadence? Will Cadence even have a partner anymore? Does she mimic Sunset, instead? And if so, will she be stopped? Perhaps this all falls on the eventual marriage of Shining Armor and Sunset Shimmer, and Twilight still shows up to crash the party. But what if things happen completely differently, and the victory of the current timeline doesn't occur at all? All of Canterlot lost to the changelings, with the elements of harmony and one of their primary users locked away separately? Bad End.

And if they do succeed there, what happens in the Crystal Empire? It comes back on schedule, perhaps Cadence is sent up there to manage the place. But without Shining Armor, how long can she last? And without a test for Twilight, who will end up acquiring the Crystal Heart? Maybe the Sunset/Shining duo can still save the day by arriving to assist the unrelated princess, but again, maybe that crushed butterfly dooms the Crystal Empire to servitude under Sombra once more.

The rest of the show is even harder to parse, because it revolves around Twilight becoming an alicorn. But if Sunset learned friendship as Celstia's successor while Twilight was still a filly, it's likely she'd have ascended by now, too, so half of those plotlines are erased. Discord might not meet Fluttershy, so he'll still be stoned when his vines strike, though Sunset and Shining might still be able to save the princesses. Losing the elements in the process, they'd still have to discover all the keys on their own. When Tirek escapes, Discord won't be there to stop Tirek, but he also won't be able to help him. Will he get shut down early, or rampage freely? Who can say?

Apart from her pony design, I have no strong feelings about Sunset Shimmer one way or another. She's just such a non-character. Stuck in spinoffs. Low impact. No impact on the show. Definitely doesn't add anything to Celestia.

I kind of like all the ideas behind sunset shimmer, the problem is that the excecution is pretty lame, water down, and pretty much shallow.

Why make Sunset a former student of Celestia? At no point that backstory plays into her character.

Her backstory dont play anything at all on her character, or motivation or anything.

that mean that the idea of "celestia having an incredibly talented pony which becomes evil and later comes back seeking revenge motivated for what make her go away, and later get back to the correct pat, and having to addapt back to normal life" is good..... but the excecution is so butched up that it pretty much play no roll at all.

Like i have always have said since last year "Sunset shimmer could have been the third missing alicorn princess and her character wouldnt change at all, because her backstory play nothing into her character"

Well that's the beauty of friendship is you don't have to learn from a master. Two newbies can come together and learn from each other. Also, the post included Shining Armor in there, who is absolutely versed in the art of friends.

Twilight could go all-out princess and disappear from the main cast, the earthpony/pegasus/unicorn balance would be restored (I hear people complained about that) and new friendship lessons could be learned because Sunset doesn't know friendship or something and then she becomes the next alicorn princess

I, personally, wouldn't mind too much if the show went in this direction

it doesnt matter if she is in equestria or in Monster High.

A character, is the guy which is put in different scenarios to do stuff, and react to stuff which happen.

no matter what they do, she was bad as a villain, she was blander as a good guy. there is no more point to go with that half ass character sunset shimmer.

you say remove twilight and put sunset instead?
THAT is what they should have done on EG. Go full "ok, sunset shimmer is our new main character, and she have to learn how to be good"

but in EG2, they pretty much jumped all that, and she is the nicest girl in the world, with the best intention ever, but she is just sad because everybody hate her guts and want her dead...

If I may, I'd like to copy over my own idea for a "From Twilight to Sunset" scenario from elsewhere.

"A what-if story, where the branch-off from the original timeline(hereby called the Alpha Line) is where Celestia lets Sunset see what the crystal mirror was trying to show her, and it turns out to be a vision of what Sunset experiences near the end of the first Equestria Girls movie. The vision, showing what she'll become if she continues down her dark path, unnerves her and she refuses to have anything to do with the mirror. This prevents her from becoming disowned by Celestia and traveling to the human world, and stays on as her personal student. Eventually Celestia teaches Sunset about certain events of her own past, such as what happened with Luna(albeit with a bit of a fictional twist to hide the truth of Nightmare Moon's identity,) which helps open Sunset's eyes a bit in regards to her self-centered solitude, however she still goes on with her high-horse arrogance, albeit not so much cruel to others as before. Meanwhile, Twilight enters the school as a prodigy per Alpha Line, and Celestia decides to take her under her wing in order to give Sunset a possible friend. Eventually the two foster a sort of friendly rivalry, but mostly keeping to themselves. Thanks to this though, Twilight opens up a bit to other unicorns at the school, while Sunset stays with her magical studies since she's still quite self-absorbed. One day, she remembers the story Celestia told her about Luna and Nightmare Moon, and checks a book about prophecies(the same book Twilight read in Alpha Line.) And of course, upon trying to contact Celestia, she's told to stop studying magic so much and to go out and make more friends. Cue Episode 1: Friendship is Magic, as Sunset is sent to Ponyville instead of Twilight, who remains in Canterlot doing... magical things."
