I decided to go back and rewatch Season 7, the last season of MLP: FiM that made it to DVD. I was not pleased with what I found. Episode after episode struck me as flat, uninspired, moralizing, and occasionally embarrassing kiddie fare. I began to think: How could I have fallen in love with this show? How much better the occasional pleasures of the G5 movie are!

And then I hit "Parental Glideance," and found myself chuckling, cheering, and grinning like the proverbial skunk all the way through, from the four-minute mark onward.

How wonderful G4 was at its best! And what a miracle it was that the successive teams of show makers were able to hit that best, at least occasionally, after all those years.

Anybody else have any thoughts on revisiting old episodes?

Yeah, 7, 8, and 9 have like 1 good episode per season. That’s about it. The Parent Map was even better. Season 8 Episode 8. There’s so many little things that made it godlike.

With that recommendation, I went and watched it. Not bad. But the little thing I liked best was "A Houyhnhnm's Guide to Magical Arcana." I didn't hear that the first time around -- and I love that the Houyhnhnms made it into the show.

For me the best part was Kelly Sheridan’s voice acting as Starlight, and the blue pony here from 2:47-3:05 is amazing. I like how she reacted to the dialogue. Starlight And Sunburst "Solve" Their Parent’s Friendship Problems (The Parent Map) | MLP: FiM [HD]

Rewatching of S7 continues with "A Royal Problem." One of the best episodes EVER!

Easily. I could point out so many little perfect things about that one.

One of my favorite moments was when Luna ate the peel and threw the banana away. I couldn't help wondering whether that was a reference to the "banana" meme.

One super little thing I liked was when she poked her hoof out when she said something like “change our cutie marks back this instant!” It’s things like that that the animators throw in there that help make the show so good from every aspect.

I loved the moment when dream Luna starts spitting out handfuls of teeth.

That sudden moment of grotesque awfulness -- "horror" is really not too strong a word -- lifts the thing decisively up from the realm of toy commercials toward the level of children's literature and the Brothers Grimm.

>>36832986Weird, Parental Glideance struck me as especially flat, uninspired, moralizing, and embarrassing kiddie fare. Like, to a really gross degree in comparison to other episodes. But I did enjoy Griffon the Brush Off much more on later viewings, particularly after season 4.

Another S7 episode that had me grinning like a possum all the way through on rewatching was "Secrets and Pies." Consistently snappy, grinworthy cartoon fun.

I guess grinworthy and cringeworthy ARE pretty close together.

I've started rewatching the S1 episodes that I never liked very much. "Griffon the Brushoff" is one of those. I'll give it a try.

For the record, I was amazed at how much I enjoyed "The Ticket Master" and "Boast Busters." Although they didn't show the mastery of Flash that the animators developed as the show matured, they had a certain freshness and sassiness -- and occasional cartoony extravagance -- that later seasons lacked.

>thoughts on old episodes

G1's quest for magic coins was pretty great, so long as you dont wish the rain away forever. Poor little ponies...

Well, like you I didn't hate "Griffon the Brushoff" as much on a rewatch. But I still don't like it. Joke-shop practical jokes are the recourse of morons.

But try taking a look at Pinkie Pride in comparison. That's what really makes me appreciate GtBO and its characterization of Pinkie.

GtBO was never good, had aged badly years ago and is still one of the low points of the series. As long as it was just Dash and Pinkie out and about it was okay but as soon as Gilda appeared it all went down the drain.
