Honestly, I think this will be somewhere in the spectrum of mediocre to bad, just like the G4 movie. I also think as the show itself continues on, and we get into subsequent episodes and seasons, it’ll get far better, again just like G4 did by starting out very simple, comfy and soft, and really ramping up in quality from like Dragonshy (IMO the first really great episode) all the way through Saddle Row Review (IMO the last really great episode).

The key to success here will be if Hasbro can repeat their G4 formula by having a consistent writing team whom are all intimately familiar with the world and characters. Once they’re comfortable writing for the mane 5, we should see some really great stuff. Until then, and as long as they’re trying to pander to an obscenely out of touch corporate idea of what little girls want, I think the movie will struggle to be appealing, and the show might falter early.

I'm expecting the same thing really. I'll still watch the movie in hopes of being proved wrong or at the very least, enjoy a cute fluffy movie. Hopefully when the show starts and isn't working off of a movie budget, the writers will be allowed a little more creative freedom as it goes on.

Though i do wonder how many direct references to G4 they're planning to make. Not just in the movie but the show too.

It's probably an ok song on its own, but as an MLP song, I dunno, man. Part of the appeal of the G4 music was that there was nothing added to the singer's voice. There wasn't all this synthy manufactured crap. Rebecca Shoichet was Twilight all by herself, nothing added to it. Ashleigh, Kazumi, Shannon, all them didn't need their voice morphed or cleaned up at all. It was a completely authentic performance. The fact that Ashleigh could even sing in a Rainbow Dash voice at all was insane.

So this probably misses the mark for me, but I'm not the target demo so whatever.

The song is unflavored cotton candy. And the more I see of these dancing plastic dolls with their bug eyes and their perpetual goofy grins, the more I dislike them.

This particular vapid song and its lame lyrics are only the superficial part of the problem. The deeper problem is that 3-D CGI just doesn't work as well with songs as 2-D animation does. Compare the songs in Centaurworld (Every Song from Centaurworld Compilation 🎶 Netflix Futures). Stopping a drama to burst into a song is inherently kind of strained and artificial, especially in photographic movies where an illusion of reality is part of the medium. This is the main reason why the live-action musical disappeared from Hollywood studios. Musical numbers work better on stage or in drawn film, where the illusion of reality is dispensed with altogether.

Watching more bits and snippets of the G5 film trickling out, I think that it's snappy and clever, with interesting worldbuilding and great animation. But I still find myself really disliking the smirking, squinting, mugging, rubbery faces of the CGI characters. So far, for me at least, they have no capacity to involve and engage.

God, I wish I could love it. But I don't.

It was an okay kiddie movie, with a whole bunch of dancing plastic toys that were pretty much indistinguishable from one another. To quote the New York Times review: "Out with the hand drawn-animated ponies, in with their creepily-anthropomorphized, digitally-animated brethren." There were some chuckles, and some emotional moments; but "creepy" -- and contrived --seems to me to sum up a lot of it.

I imagine the next step will be a very polarizing first season. I think there will be a backlash against something in the series, though I'm not sure on the specifics. Following a change of course for the show, season two will feature an improvement in story quality and character development, with new connections to Gen 4 drawn to please fans. 8.5/10 from me. The movie was fun, cute, and fluffy. The world building was interesting and stayed significantly more faithful to G4 than i was expecting. There were some weak parts getting closer to the end of the film along with how readily the earth ponies accepted and celebrated magic returning to their neighbors after having been taught likely their entire lives that they were fierce enemies. Still, it was engaging enough to keep my attention. Curious to see how the tv show will work out when it releases.

Also, really loved all the subtle backround references in the background. Mostly in the first bit.

Like Grogars Bell, Painting of Starswirl the Bearded, etc.

Looking forward to show!

I'll put down some head-canon for once.

Twilight created the three crystals we saw in the movie. In a ritual she bound the world's magic to them. She did so for two reasons:

- to force ponies to get along or lose magic for good
- if they'd lose magic, the lack thereof would prevent creatures like the Windigoes to exist to threaten ponies

Generally I think Twilight realized that, just as Chrysalis said, fear would always be stronger and true harmony could never be reached. And she would not forever be around to save pony's asses. So they'd have to learn to do so on heir own or live in a world without their powers.

Also, for the plan to work Celestia and Luna ascended, leaving their mortal bodies behind to become one with sun and moon; thus making them move on their own again, without the need of magic in case the pony races failed to get along.

I liked it. Avoided a lot of pitfalls G4 fell into particularly the characters are more complete and not such vapid tropes as G4.

Izzys sparkle is TOO sparkly for Bridlewood but not needing meds, for ecample.

I like the low tech forest unicorns and the high tech peg city. Such cool starting points and the alicorn completion was satisfying and "i can't believe it" but im hooked on G5.

So, uh, MLP: The Young Turks came out today.

The voice acting is good, and are pretty in line with how they sounded in the movie.

Their personalities are exact carbon copies of the G4 mane 6, but it’s still early so I won’t judge it quite yet.

the mane 5 have good chemistry. They speak to each other in a much more casual, relaxed tone than the mane 6 did. The animation was definitely a step down from the movie. The voice acting was really good. Posey is a cunt and she can go fuck herself. I am interested in finding out who this new Filly Funtasia villain is.

It didn't really look right. It was like the pones were rendered in differently than the scenes. Zipp looked the best and most detailed to me, though there was that error with her hoof. This series didn't feel alive, but very robotic. I didn't like the mid song either. The climax was a mix of cool effects and bad movements. New VAs for Izzy and Pipp didn't feel right to me. Honestly not a lot positive to say. I guess at least shit happened. Like, evolution of the pony mythos and stuffs. I like the overarching plot of Zipp and her responsibilities. I guess this is how it looks now. I better get used to it.

Also, I appreciate that Izzy cut the pizza into six slices for five ponies. I think the other piece was for me.

I didn't mind the animation to be honest, what I didn't like that much were the backgrounds.

I finally broke down and started watching "Make Your Mark." I stopped after two minutes.

Two weeks later, Netflix started bombarding me with "You Haven't Finished Watching" e-mails, so I went back and started up where I had left off. After two more minutes, I was ashamed of myself for having listened to Netflix's coaxings. I turned it off and went to wash my brain out with soap. I'll mention just two defects:

(A) That was probably the clumsiest exposition I've ever seen.

(B) All the smartphone shtick, probably intended to engage the target demographic, just rubbed in the fact that YOU CAN'T WORK A CELLPHONE KEYBOARD WITH HORSE HOOVES.

Is there anything good in "Make Your Mark" that I'll miss by stopping at this point and not proceeding further?

I think you’re really missing out by not watching it to the end. See, there’s this fucking abortion of a dragon that may be one of the most hideous things I’ve ever seen. I was just listening to all the gen 5 music again and kind of getting hyped, but then I saw that egg and remembered what the hell came out of it. I mean, I’ll post a pic, but you really need to see that thing moving in all of its horrible glory. And this is coming from me, and I generally love everything. That dragon is bad. I can put up with a lot, but that thing might kill the series for me. God, I bet it’s not even going to talk. It’ll just goo and gush the whole single season and goober on everything. Fuck. Remember Spike and Ember and Smolder? Dragons used to be cool. Now we get Sparky Sparkeronie.

I finally caved and watched a "Tell Your Tale" video — the new one, with the video-meme plot and the bananas.

The graphics style is ugly. The beangrins are tedious and repellent. The characters are indistinguishable. The animation is dreadful. There is no style. There is no artistry. There is nothing but incessant banana-peel slapstick. And the characters make banana smoothies with the peels in, to make things easier for the animators. Jeez.

When can we move on to G6?
