What makes a good headcanon? Scootapuff!saU4Tsd4dU 372579

I was browsing through some videos and YouTube and a title I saw piqued my interest; what, in your opinion, makes for a "good" headcanon? How much evidence do you think a headcanon requires before you give it any credence? Feel free to share and discuss any particular ones you might have as well.

One that makes you happy. Invariably, anyone else will consider yours stupid and far inferior to their own, so no point bothering to make anyone else happy with your fanon.

Anonymous 372620

One that is non-existant.

One that is coherent and makes the straightest line between all the points.

I suppose a "good" headcanon would be one that is able to advance through the gamut of canonicity in regard to the show.

For example, AJ's parents being deceased was once somebody's (or maybe a few people's) headcanon. It took off and reached a widely accepted level of fanon, and with AFR is now quasi-canon.

So in this sense, "good" headcanons are ones that arise spontaneously in the most number of people–a kind of "group genius".

Head-canons are just opinions. There is no "good" headcanon and the only way for headcanon to be bad is if it is contradictory with itself or the show

I know right? Dashie wouldn't be curvy at all, she'd be pretty toned.

To me, a good headcanon is one that is drawn from actual canon and can fit into the actual canon in a decent, non-forced, non-contradictory way.

For example, let's say that you have a headcanon that Fluttershy abuses her animal friends when she's alone with them. This would be a bad headcanon because it completely goes against not only what we know about Fluttershy's character, but it also completely contradicts what we've actually seen from Flutter's interactions with her animals.

Actually, it was Lauren's, so there was always a pretty good chance that it would become canon unless Hasbro's Meddlers In Suits said, "Absolutely not." Wisely, she did not give them the opportunity to say that. (see image)

Yep, but Fluttershy having a history of being abused is good headcanon, because we already know as much as they can show us without traumatizing the target audience. Bullying is abuse. She was abused. The only question is, how bad?

Ok if bullying is abuse, and we have seen her being bullied when she was young, then how is that a headcanon? Wouldnt that just make it canon?

As far as I'm concerned it does, but I've run into people online who say she wasn't abused. I'd say if you have a post-traumatic stress reaction like <pic related>, you were abused.
