Thanks for posting them. It's good that at least Tell Your Tale gets some songs, though they are very similar in style.All in all they remind me somewhat of the Littlest Pet Shop songs, though they had more variety.

Simple songs which weren't of a bad quality, but just didn't have that certain... je-ne-sais-quois.

The best G4 songs were fan-made: Lullaby for a Princess, Anthropology, The Moon Rises, Gypsy Bard, Pinkie's Brew...

I must disagree with that. I will cite Art of the Dress, Winter Wrap-Up, At The Gala, and I haven’t even left Season 1

Those are all among Daniel Ingram's best work for the show. I first got interested in MLP after stumbling across "Winter Wrap Up" online. And the orchestral accompaniment to "At the Gala" (not the vocal lines) is wonderful.

But "At the Gala" and "The Art of the Dress" are — what should we say? Affectionate derivatives? Burlesques? Of Stephen Sondheim numbers from "Into the Woods" and "Sunday In the Park With George."

And like almost every other G4 song, these numbers suffer from really lame lyrics: flat, uninspired, and technically defective, with off rhymes and lumpy scansion. The showrunners of G4 never figured it was worth the money to hire a lyricist. Generally, they just had Ingram or the screenwriters crank out some words. The best fan songs, like "Lullaby for a Princess" and "The Moon Rises," have lyrics that rhyme and scan and soar— or at least flutter along at treetop level— and show some evidence of thought, and craft, and inspiration.

Want more good songs?
S2: May the Best Pet Win, Becoming Popular, This Day Aria
S3: Racist Barn, True True Friend
S4: Had Weird Al, also Find the Music in You
S5: Our Town, Pony I Want to Be, The Magic Inside
S6: It's Gonna Work? This season wasn't great for songs.
S7: Battle for Sugar Belle, In My Head Like a Catchy Song
S8: School of Friendship, A Kirin Tale (love that one).

I didn't watch all of season 9. Too painful. But making this list, I did notice things started to peter off for me after Season 5, with only the occasional loved song in the later seasons. I think maybe Equestria Girls started to steal the music. Rainbow Rocks has a lot of great songs.

Sorry, I don't know about things like scansion and treetop fluttering lyrics. I'm not a very smart pony. I just know I like to sing Our Town and Music in the Treetops.

Don't forget "Hearts Strong as Horses" and "Apples to the Core."

But compare these lyrics:

It comes to this at last:
I will no longer yield the sky,
If they cannot love
But one princess alone.
See, the Moon is rising;
She has come to claim the heavens for her own—

And all will know the wonder
Of my dark and jeweled sky
When all the world is wrapped
In an eternal lullaby;
So say goodnight to this,
The final setting of the sun;
Tomorrow dawns in darkness—
The nighttime has begun!

--with (say) these:

Applejack needs your help
She's trying hard, doing what she can
Would you try, just give it a chance;
You might find that you'll start to understand.

Pinkie Pie is in trouble,
We need to get there by her side;
We can try to do what we can now,
For together we can be her guide.

A true, true friend helps a friend in need
A friend will be there to help them see.
A true, true friend helps a friend in need
To see the light that shines from a true, true friend!

You don't need to know anything technical about prosody or scansion or stanza form to feel the difference.

Now I’m singing True True Friend with you. Thank you for that. I didn’t find the other lyrics as enjoyable to sing. Maybe I just don’t know the tune. Want to sing Anthropology with me? I know that one.

Don't you know the music to "The Moon Rises"? It's a fan-made aria with fan-made animation. I'd call it just about the best thing that came out of G4. You can watch it here:

Great! I'm glad you liked it.

But do you agree that, say---

A true, true friend helps a friend in need
A friend will be there to help them see.
A true, true friend helps a friend in need
To see the light that shines from a true, true friend!

--is clunky, clumsy, offhanded, and empty compared to, say—

And all will know the wonder
Of my dark and jeweled sky
When all the world is wrapped
In an eternal lullaby--

If you agree that there's a huge difference here, and that it favors the fan product over the official product, then you understand what I'm complaining about (and what I complained about off and on all through Generation 4). The showrunners didn't care enough about the lyrics to hire a poet— a versemaker, a word artist— and the show's wonderful world-building, voice acting, animation, characters, and music suffered from the neglect of an important part of the picture. Occasionally, a G4 song lyric would have a touch of inspiration in it, a turn of phrase that stuck in the mind. Hearts strong as horses, apples to the core, sometimes you gotta let it rain. Cool! But mostly the lyrics were just word-processor output.

For me, "Magical Mystery Cure" was the low point; and the absolute cringeworthy nadir was "You've Come a Long Way" and this dreadful blob of glop:

The Princess Twilight cometh
Behold, behold
A Princess here before us
Behold, behold, behold
Behold, behold (behold, behold)
The Princess Twilight cometh
Behold, behold (behold, behold)
The Princess is
The Princess is here!

I hope whoever wrote that is kept awake at night by the moans of the outraged ghosts of W. S. Gilbert, Cole Porter, and Ira Gershwin.

I don't even count that last one as a song. In fact, I only know it existed because you just reminded me of it. Certainly not on my albums or playlists.

I guess we like different musics. The animation in that one you link certainly doesn't have me wanting to sing along or listen to it again, despite how fancy it's lyrics were. I don't think True True Friend is clumsy and off-handed. I'm not even sure what that means. But it's catchier and more fun to listen to, for me at least. Sorry I'm not a very intellectual conversationalist.

We can collectively poop on Princess Twilight Cometh, though. That's like Pony Pokey levels for me. Just hit the next button and move on. Preferably something from Rainbow Rocks. I'm going to go listen to Shine Like Rainbows.

Fair enough. All I can say is that lame lyrics spoil a song for me, no matter how catchy the music is. And the "humanized ex-ponies in high school" shtick, the character design, and the animation depress me and spoil everything in the Equestria Girls universe for me— so I didn't watch Rainbow Rocks. But I'll go take in "Shine Like Rainbows" on the strength of your recommendation!

And different folks get different things stuck in their heads. You probably won't believe this, but the worst earworm I ever had, many years ago, was this bit from a 1695 Purcell opera:

Purcell: The Indian Queen, Z. 630 - Ed A. Pinnock, M. Laurie / Prologue - Wake Quivera, Wake

I went around singing that to myself over and over and over for three weeks, until I wanted to die.
♫And o-o-o-o-o-p-'ning buds / Dri-i-i-i-i-i-ve fa-a-a-all-ing fruits a-way...♫ Oh shit, no! Not again! ♫Ap-ples for-ev-er! Ap-ples to-geth-er...♫

That's a good one too. Never skip it. I think One Small Thing is my favorite from the movie. Very feelies when all the sea ponies decide to help in the end. I like all the movies songs now that I think about it. See, that goes to my theory about maybe the movies (FiM and EqG) stole some of the time and songs from the latter half of the show.
