I have lifted the attached image from EQD. It's supposed to be Fluttershy, done in G5 style. I think this ought to make clear one of the big differences between 2D and 3D: you have to be more realistic in 3D, and so characters and objects can't be simple and iconic. They have to have depth and texture and spatial location. As a result, they are less -- well, calligraphic: less near the "meaning" pole of Scott McCloud's ternary diagram (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Magnus-Haake/publication/324597044/figure/fig33/AS:631573850382349@1527590348158/An-edited-reproduction-of-the-design-space-of-visual-iconography-The-Big-Triangle.png), and much, much closer to the "Reality" pole. This makes them harder to read at a glance. It takes study to distinguish this G5 reading of Fluttershy from the other G5 pony characters; but the G4 Fluttershy is recognized in a heartbeat. Here's 2-D Fluttershy, for comparison.

I don't see that as a problem. It's a different art style, that's all.I don't think distinguishing or reading her would cause any issues.

Me neither. I know G5 will be completely different in terms of art. It's not that big of a deal really.

Plus, we're still waiting on the show to come. We just got a prologue of a movie after all.

It's not just a different art style. The two media are as different as sculpture and stained glass.

You're right, but I don't think it makes them any more difficult to 'read at a glance'. Or maybe I'm miss-reading what you mean by that.

See attached pic of a similarly G-Five-ified Rarity. The mane color is sufficient to distinguish her from the G5 Fluttershy-- but the similarity is otherwise overwhelming, down to the shape of the curls. If you compare the character designs for the 2-D (G4) versions, you will see that a number of small distinctions have been coded into these much simpler, icon-like characters: different mane shape, different contour lines, different eye shape, slightly different eyelashes. Reading the flat characters is like reading a corporate logo or a heraldic emblem. Reading the 3-D characters requires a bit more attention, because their shared realistic textures and features add noise to the recognition process. Or so it seems to me.

But in G4 the models were all the same too. In the end it was basically just a matter of colors and mane/tail/eye shape that made a difference.

It's no different with G5. The new main cast looks similar but still as unique to each other as the main six did.
