As Ponychan devolves into PeeChan and follows /oat/ down into a cesspool of arguments over posters' favorite bands, snacks, alcoholic beverages, and projectile weapons, /pony/ is going to be the only thing left on this site that has anything much to do with MLP. Standing here on the boundary between G4 and G5, we have an opportunity to talk about what made G4 so great at the beginning — and why, as most of the remaining posters to /pony/ seem to feel, it lost a lot of its charm and magic after the first few seasons.I think the big problem was a failure of imagination. Instead of developing and making deeper the characters and the world that Lauren Faust laid down at the beginning, the showrunners could think of nothing better to do than to pile in a succession of new and increasingly indistinguishable villains and species and a continual flood of new gimmicks -- from go-karts, Indian cuisine, and feuding hillbillies, to the tediously unimaginative environment of the School for Friendship. Will the creators of G5 learn anything from the failures of G4? What, above all, do they need to avoid?

>>36832741Unfortunately, i don't think they're going to learn anything from their past mistakes. In the end what it comes down to for Hasbro is toy sales over movie or show ratings. So long as it helps to advertise whatever new thing they're trying to sell, they don't seem to care about the quality. That being said, i wonder if that will work to G5's advantage? If the suits are still able to rake in the big bucks, maybe they're give the show creators a little more creative freedom and not strap them down to formulas. Really what i hope for is that the suits are involved just enough to reel in the creatives from going too out there, but not so much that they stifle and suffocate their imagination and story telling.

>>36832793I'd believe that, though i doubt it will hook anyone for very long if the show is missing the same fun and freedom from the movie. The wanderlust of G4 has long since faded so they're going to need to try something a little different if they want to keep what they hope to hook. Particularly without someone to take the lead in making it fun for more than just the target demographic.I'm sure the little girls will love it all the same.
