MLP was just a perfect storm. It had prior iterations that were well known. Season 1 had really good designs, world building, and writing. It was able to charm and appeal to many age groups across both genders.
The internet fandom that popped up around it helped accelerate it's growth, but that was something no group could control. There was no decision to be made. We're individually powerless except to sit back and watch where the tide of humanity will take something. It's like a force of nature.
