Hallo fegeleins I heard in old times you used to like writing huge textwalls about your waifus so I assume you like detailed reviews.
I got some reviews to read, let's post some and compare.

I decided to go back and rewatch Season 7, the last season of MLP: FiM that made it to DVD. I was not pleased with what I found. Episode after episode struck me as flat, uninspired, moralizing, and occasionally embarrassing kiddie fare. I began to think: How could I have fallen in love with this show? How much better the occasional pleasures of the G5 movie are!

And then I hit "Parental Glideance," and found myself chuckling, cheering, and grinning like the proverbial skunk all the way through, from the four-minute mark onward.

How wonderful G4 was at its best! And what a miracle it was that the successive teams of show makers were able to hit that best, at least occasionally, after all those years.

Anybody else have any thoughts on revisiting old episodes?

But try taking a look at Pinkie Pride in comparison. That's what really makes me appreciate GtBO and its characterization of Pinkie.

GtBO was never good, had aged badly years ago and is still one of the low points of the series. As long as it was just Dash and Pinkie out and about it was okay but as soon as Gilda appeared it all went down the drain.

I have lifted the attached image from EQD. It's supposed to be Fluttershy, done in G5 style. I think this ought to make clear one of the big differences between 2D and 3D: you have to be more realistic in 3D, and so characters and objects can't be simple and iconic. They have to have depth and texture and spatial location. As a result, they are less -- well, calligraphic: less near the "meaning" pole of Scott McCloud's ternary diagram (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Magnus-Haake/publication/324597044/figure/fig33/AS:631573850382349@1527590348158/An-edited-reproduction-of-the-design-space-of-visual-iconography-The-Big-Triangle.png), and much, much closer to the "Reality" pole. This makes them harder to read at a glance. It takes study to distinguish this G5 reading of Fluttershy from the other G5 pony characters; but the G4 Fluttershy is recognized in a heartbeat. You're right, but I don't think it makes them any more difficult to 'read at a glance'. Or maybe I'm miss-reading what you mean by that.

See attached pic of a similarly G-Five-ified Rarity. The mane color is sufficient to distinguish her from the G5 Fluttershy-- but the similarity is otherwise overwhelming, down to the shape of the curls. If you compare the character designs for the 2-D (G4) versions, you will see that a number of small distinctions have been coded into these much simpler, icon-like characters: different mane shape, different contour lines, different eye shape, slightly different eyelashes. Reading the flat characters is like reading a corporate logo or a heraldic emblem. Reading the 3-D characters requires a bit more attention, because their shared realistic textures and features add noise to the recognition process. Or so it seems to me.

But in G4 the models were all the same too. In the end it was basically just a matter of colors and mane/tail/eye shape that made a difference.

It's no different with G5. The new main cast looks similar but still as unique to each other as the main six did.

Hey everypony

I've been gone a very long time. I stopped watching the show at the end of season 3. Tried to watch Equestria Girls but it was just too much for me. Recently that new gen 4.5 movie came out and I'm GUESSING there's been a bit of a resurgence in brony culture?

How have you all been doing? I've seen you. Here and there. Lurking around, being visible. Pony avatars in all the usual places, on Steam profiles... even one of the HackTheBox admins. All I can do is say I commend bronies for being 100% indefatigable and proving to everyone who might have hated or said it was "weird" that this isn't a phase and this community is here to stay.

idk. I'm drunk. Hey everyone! long time no see.

Well hiya! Thanks for stopping by!

Just like Clarity i also watched the show through to the end and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. The newest movie surpassed my (admittedly low) expectations and has kind of given me hope for the new series.

Since the entire series is on Netflix, it would be an easy way to revisit what caught your interest in the first place. That is of course assuming you have access to a Netflix account.

I started watching in early 2011 and watched through to the end, although the good episodes got fewer and farther apart as the show wore on. Still, there were great episodes every year, down through "A Royal Problem" and "Parental Glideance" in S7 and "Fake It Till You Make It" and "Horse Play" in S8. Season 9? I dunno -- maybe "The Point of No Return?" I haven't watched it in a whle.

No compromise. No concessions. No toleration. This will not pass.

You can push stuff with hooves. You can bang stuff with hooves. You can kick stuff with hooves. You can scratch your ear with a (hind) hoof. If you're very careful, you can even balance things on hooves.

But you can't pick up a teacup with a hoof, or punch computer keys and cell-phone buttons with a hoof, or play a guitar with hooves. Give up on this, and you give up on horses.

One of the minor pleasures of G4 MLP was all the horsy gags, puns, and references. A currency measured in bits. Twilight putting on a saddle to go out in "Winter Wrap-Up." The CMC playing a checkers-like game with tiny horseshoes. Typewriters with two keys. RD's oath "Horseapples!" in "Fall Weather Friends." And of course, all the geography — Manehattan, Fillydelphia, Las Pegasus, Canterlot, Neighagara Falls, and so on.

Others can probably think of a lot of other G4 examples. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of this in G5. "Maretime Bay" is good, and "Bridlewood" and "Canterlogic" are okay, I guess. But magical sticky hooves have replaced the horsy mouth-handling of objects, and there seems to be a general downplaying of horse stuff. This seems like an aspect of a generally less playful approach to the world and the material. Or am I missing something?

Maybe there'll be more horse puns coming in the series, when we see the day to day lives of the ponies. I don't think the G5 movie had much opportunity to show any such things - just like the G4 movie didn't.

Dang, I didn't mean to write that.

What I ment to write was "IDW own the rights to Sonic comics", as in the fact IDW are currently making the comics for Sonic.

IDW also made the comics for MLP:FiM and Transformers so I imagine it wouldn't be that difficult for IDW to pull some strings for a crossover.

It's just I'd much rather have a Transformers crossover than a MLP:FiM crossover.
Would love to see the Deceptions scan some of Dr. Eggmans robots and become the "Badnicons", or Dr. Eggman studying the cybernetics of the Decepticons to make the Badnicons himself.

I also like the idea of Optimus Prime scanning the GUN truck, or Blurr scanning Sonic's Speed Star.
Or Bumblebee scanning a Moto Bug or Starscream scanning a Balkiry

It'd be more difficult at least for one reason, Transformers and MLP both belong to Hasbro. Sonic doesn't.

Still, I think Sonic in the Transformers world (or vice versa) would be a better crossover than either with ponies.

Epic Mount!Hero.tYu2gCountry code: blank.gif, country type: blank, valid: 36833108

>>36833107
All the more reason why a MLP:FiM crossover with Sonic is unlikely.

But IDW does own the rights to all three comics... and there has been stranger Transformers crossovers such as Back to the Future, Star Trek TOS and even Archie.

But yes, I think Sonic would be more fitting for Transformers than MLP:FiM.

My questions for MLP G5
Since the G5 movie just came out, all theories for the movie are answered. But I have some unanswered questions that might be answered in the special or the series.

The unsolved mysteries of G5 MLP:

What happened to the Crystal Empire?

What happened to Cloudsdale, Ponyville and Canterlot which are home to each ponykind?

What happened to other creatures and where are they now?

Where is the portal to the Human World (I don't really want to the series to show it, just answers from others. I don't really want to see cursed humans since Equestria Girls has perfect human design and since I don't want to see the results of G5 humans, I don't want to see it to happen in G5)

Fluttershy coming out of her shell and turning momentarily into a bull-beast was always good for a laugh, from "Dragonshy" onward. How about her chewing on that squirrel in "Best Night Ever"? How about The Stare? And Flutterhulk? And Flutterbat? And Flutterbasso in "Bridle Gossip" and "Filli Vanilli"? And becoming a monster in "Putting Your Hoof Down"? And somehow the iron core was always unexpected and funny when it peeked through -- at least until the end of the series, by which time the original Fluttershy had been pretty much replaced by a new, self-confident model that had stopped being funny (to me, at any rate).

Yay! Nothing like her in G5.

In the new comic series, G5 ponies are exploring what appears to be the dusty ruins of Canterlot, prompting someone named Ian to post the following on EQD:

This comic is essentially telling us that G5 is going to stop pretending to care about honoring its predecessor and tell us that Twilight and her friends utterly failed in their quest to create a better Equestria, that everything they and their friends fought so hard for was ultimately for nothing, and that all the characters we know and love probably lived out their days knowing they were losers and failures.

Thanks, G5. Now go buck yourself.

I have a different response. This narrative reminds me of the lyric from the old Lerner and Loewe musical "Camelot"--

Ask ev'ryone if he has heard the story,
And tell it strong and clear if he has not,
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called Camelot.

Fallen glories linger as legends. Even after they fall, they can rise up again in the imagination and inspire the lives of generations not yet born. I find myself singing this anthem in my head:
