Mind you, this's Pinkie Pie we're talking about here...she's got a bit of a track record of breaking the fourth wall. Maybe they're planning on using brony shout-outs as a breaking-the-fourth-wall sort of deal, but I doubt we'll be hearing it from, say, Twilight anytime soon.

And, when you think about it, it kinda makes sense...if I was running a young network representing a huge, risky investment from the parent company, and suddenly an obsessive peripheral audience started telling everyone they met about one of my shows, I'd pay attention to them, too.

As far as fanservice goes, there's a right way, and a wrong way of doing things.

The right way doesn't ultimately affect how the show is written. Rather than taking a fan idea and basing something around it, the writers take their idea, and add an element that both the peripheral fans and the regular fans would understand. For instance, in "Feeling Pinkie Keen", it could have been (and was originally) any random pony that dropped all that stuff on Twilight. By instead making it Derpy, they added an extra joke that the bronies would understand, without affecting the regular viewers. Another way to do this properly is to make a reference that makes sense without knowing it's a reference, such as Rarity's wings evaporating; it makes sense regardless of whether or not you know the story of Icarus.

Have a scene that needs a DJ? Use DJ Pon-3
Need a klutz? Use Derpy

The wrong way is to focus on things the bronies would understand, but the regular fans wouldn't. For example: an episode about Rainbow Dash coming out of the closet; shippers would crap themselves, but the kids watching would just go "huh?".

In a nutshell:
Good fanservice: Kids and adults enjoy it. Bronies enjoy it, and go "I see what they did there".
Bad fanservice: Kids and adults go "huh?". Bronies enjoy it and go "I see what they did there".

As far as shout-outs to the brony phenomenon itself, consider this list:

All of these blend seamlessly into the story, since they're done subtly. If handled correctly, I don't see why more shout-outs to the brony phenomenon couldn't be included.

Slowpoke here, but personally I think this whole thing was just something Hasbo made the voice staff do to make the company appear cool. It certainly is alot less subtle and kid friendly (given that the original song is about how California is full of party-hardy harlots) than the actual show. Not to mention how they directly contacted "us" instead of letting the show's staff mention it. It all seems as if they're trying to use the fanbase as a way to make more business. It echos the late 90s/early 2000s, when companies such as Sprite, MTV, etc. tried appealing directly to teenagers because of their disposable income. Now I'm not saying that the show itself is trying to make money of us. It was Lauren's way of getting a job and accomplishing her goal of making a good girls' show that doesn't annoy people. However, what I am saying is that Hasbro itself might be trying to use the show and the fanbase as tools to sell more products and earn more money. I can already see that they managed to produce a positive response out of us.
