Rainbow Dash is an allegory for friendship. She is the glue that holds everypony together, like an actual rainbow. An amalgamation of different colors, united to create something special.

Possible explanation for the bullies not remembering Rainbow Dash doing a sonic rainboom as a filly.... you'll recall they got knocked out of the race (and apparently knocked out.) At the speed of sound, in a few seconds she would have been miles away and clean out of sight when the sonic rainboom happened.... and most people who saw it didn't know what it was, much less what caused it.

On the subject of "pegasi" (yeees, THIS again) I feel I should point out that "Pegasus" IS Latin. It's the Latin form of the Greek Πήγασος (Pegasos). And it's second declension, which means that its plural form would indeed be "Pegasi" (ignoring the fact that there was legendarily only one Pegasus).

To sum up: there is NOTHING wrong with pluralizing "pegasus" as "pegasi".



(But please don't write "pegasii", because that IS wrong.)

So, what did Pinkie actually mean when she said she lived on a rock farm? Did her family work on a quarry, or did they just clear fields in preparation for planting crops, where Pinkie, being young and foolish, assumed they were "farming rocks"?

Maybe Pinkie is just a craptastic storyteller, seeing as how she claimed that she created Equestria. Maybe she just lied about everything outright. Who knows.

At any rate, I'm confused as fuck.

* Applejack trying to be all pretentious? Oookay. Also, LOL that her aunt and uncle are Oranges. Apples, Oranges.... haaa cute.
* Fluttershy's song... bleh. Not to mention, what the hell? She was bullied so much that she hated being a pegasus so when she discovered the ground, she found her calling? Good grief, poor filly was SHELTERED!
* Rarity yelling at the rock was kinda cute, especially how it turned out to be a sort of geode, but what the hell? The spell activated on its own? Ooookay...
* Twilight's parents! Also, Spike as a hatchling is ADORABLE! He used his tail as a pacifier! Though I thought his egg was supposed to be purple and green.
* IF Pinkie's story is true and not just her being the tremendous parasprite that she can be, then holy crap! I call bullshit, though, cuz didn't Granny Pie tell her to laugh at fears to make them vanish?
* I thought it was kinda lame that they were all tied together by Dash's sonic rainboom, but whatever. Pinkie glomping Dash (and Dash grunting in surprise when it happens) was adorable.
* Spike's "Gross! When did you become so cheesy?!" at the end of Twilight's letter saved the episode for me. I was just about to write it off as a good episode that petered out at the end, but he saved it.

Incoming speculation.

Princess Celestia saw the appearance of the Sonic Rainboom as one of the signs that the the bearers of the Elements of Harmony (the mane cast) were nearing the time of their intended purpose (redeeming Nightmare Moon). However, since the Sonic Rainboom was indeed an ancient and forgotten act, it was more than likely that it's appearance would cause mass panic.

In order to quiet the pony masses and keep order, Celestia clouded the minds of everypony regarding the memory of the Rainboom, with the exception of Rainbow Dash (destroying such a powerful memory, the point where a pony gets her cutie mark, would be unfeasible and downright risky to Dash). This explains why, for the longest time, the ponies only remember "beautiful rainbows" or "loud explosions" when thinking of the event leading to the actual sonic rainboom.

No she actually did create Equestria, Equestria came into being because of the invention of the party but, it this event is not the first chronological event (or even the first chronological party) in Equestrian history, so it's both true that it was inspired by Rainbow Dash and served to make Rainbow Dash possible.

It's outside of the normal understanding of cause and effect.

I enjoyed myself plenty with this episode avatar-state-twilight really threw me for a loop, but does anypony else have trouble getting past the weirdness of the crazier faces sometimes? This one for instance...

The depth of the snout's just... not there. Adjust the ear and it might as well be a person! It is slightly...unsettling to me...

Come to think of it, this means that the entire mane cast sees Rainbow Dash create a rainboom before the one at the flying competition. But none of them have a moment of, "Hey! I've seen this before!" when they witness it there. Before it happens in SRB, Pinkie even says "I've never actually seen one, but..." and Fluttershy backs that up at the end of the same scene, saying "She's tried that trick 100 times and it hasn't worked once." So it's possible that Celestia cast a spell to make certain that no one knew about the rainboom except for Dash. (And who's going to believe a kid when they say they did something impossible?)

Up until this episode, I did wonder if the talk about 'did it once as a filly' was just RD bragging to cover up her own insecurities/stage fright. Now that I think of it, perhaps even she was affected - not to the point of forgetting the event entirely, but to the point of thinking it was a fluke. After all, as a kid she was acting on instinct and adrenaline, so it's not like she knew how to do it. So when she tried again, it failed every time. This worked out for the best: with RD not being able to do the rainboom again, there were no unneeded/unexpected complications that could stop the 6 from meeting in Ponyville later. Taking care of Nightmare Moon was the first priority, after all.

Which makes me wonder...perhaps the sonic rainboom is actually something Dash can only do when inspired by her Element of Harmony? Even if it's under the surface, what matters is the inspiration. First time - to help her friend Fluttershy. Second time - to save Rarity's life. Twilight might be the same when it comes to Magic as an Element of Harmony, versus her personal skill at magic. Both times when she went 'avatar state', it was due to some event that was a trigger, rather than Twilight herself starting it. This could mean that the others can also go beyond the impossible, in the right situations. It just hasn't happened yet.

Heh, thinking about things like this is pretty fun...and exactly why I don't need to check threads before bed.

All right my faithful ponies, the race Rainbow Dash participated in was completely normal and uninteresting. The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a Sonic Rainboom. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Well I just watched it, not much to say really, except excellent episode. Rarity's backstory was a bit disappointing, but still entertaining. But everypony elses' back story actually gave some more depth and insight into their character (especially Pinkie Pie living on a rock farm, oh my god - assuming her story was accurate) which is something I've been hoping we would get more of. And this is one of the few episodes to focus on the overarching storyline (if you can call it that, as it's only been mentioned in a very few eps), that is the almost supernatural connection between the mane cast.

This is definitely NOT an episode to show somepony who's never seen the show before. It would be confusing and honestly I think it's more satisfying to watch this ep late in the season because it fills in a lot of missing information.

Well, besides the fact that Trixie's and Twilight's dad's mark look almost nothing alike...

Cutie marks aren't a trait that is passed down genetically, they are based off the pony's true life calling. So even if they were the same, it wouldn't mean they are directly related, it would mean they have the calling in life.

Perhaps proven by Doctor Whoof and the green pony pictured here.
