Turnabout Storm is a five-part (originally planned as a four-part) video series by NeoArtimus who manages the YouTube channel PWaaMLPfim. The series is a crossover between Ace Attorney and MLP:FiM, which involves the main character of the Ace Attorney series, Phoenix Wright, being summoned to Ponyville to help Rainbow Dash, who's been accused of murder, while at the same time discovering the truth behind the mystery. The series is done in the same visual novel style the Ace Attorney series uses, using a similar structure such as the speech bubbles and sounds. The series also uses many custom icons, original characters, and speaking roles for all the characters. It has also received some sequels by authors other than the original creator.

Derivative works

The series spawned an unofficial spin-off titled Turnabout Storm: The Other Side. Where Turnabout Storm's focus was primarily on Phoenix, Twilight, and the defense, The Other Side places focus on Trixie and the prosecution, and sees involvement from Miles Edgeworth, Dick Gumshoe, and even Professor Hershel Layton of the Professor Layton series of video games. The series' art and visual style takes after the Ace Attorney Investigations series and, like Turnabout Storm, incorporates custom sprites and full voice acting. According to an actor for the series, it has been cancelled due to "disagreements".[1]

The series also served as inspiration for an unofficial two-part sequel titled Turnabout Spa. Set five years after the events of Turnabout Storm, the case follows Trixie, now a defense attorney, as she defends the spa pony Aloe for the murder of her sister Lotus Blossom. Sonata is present, playing a Mia Fey-like mentor role to Trixie, and Derpy Hooves is the case's prosecutor. The two-parter is animated in Source Filmmaker instead of using 2D sprites.

An unofficial sequel by TheAljavis titled My Little Ace Attorney: Elements of Justice is also in production. It is set eight years after Turnabout Storm, and takes place after season four in My Little Pony and Dual Destinies in the Ace Attorney series.

An unofficial, text adaptation of Turnabout Storm by RavenRegios and Firesight has also been created. The adaptation adds many new scenes and subplots to the existing story and takes an alternate route to the verdict, using different evidence and arguments. Major new scenes in the adaptation include but are not limited to:

  1. Twilight angrily confronting Phoenix over his treatment of Fluttershy at the end of the first day, shown separately from each other's point of view.
  2. A chapter showing how Phoenix and Twilight spent the morning before the second day of trial.
  3. An extended confrontation scene between Gilda and Rainbow Dash after Phoenix proves Gilda tried to frame her ex-friend.
  4. A chapter showing what happened during the recess that followed Fluttershy's case-saving intervention on the second day, including:
    • The reactions of Twilight's friends in the gallery to the proceedings.
    • Fluttershy being interviewed by The Judge in his chambers
    • Lenora going to see Cruise Control in detention, trying to convince him to testify against Sonata.
    • Trixie meeting and prepping Sonata, revealing a possible history and rivalry between the two.
  5. A climactic confrontation and magic duel between Twilight and Trixie when the latter realizes she's lost, one that reveals her backstory and the reasons behind her hatred of Twilight.
    • At the end, Trixie loses and is arrested for assault and reckless endangerment charges.
  6. Phoenix brought up on contempt charges for falsely accusing Fluttershy, forcing him to appear before a judicial misconduct board in Canterlot after Rainbow's Trial.
    • Despite Twilight's defense and having proved both Rainbow and Sonata innocent, he receives formal censure and community service in the form of performing fifty hours of pro bono work in Equestria.
    • To fulfill it, he stays a week after Rainbow's trial and defends both Sonata and Trixie from their respective charges in front of a pony judge, facing two new prosecutors.

Episode 3 of LordIban's original Ace Attorney series "Operation: Turnabout" makes a direct reference to Turnabout Storm: Allied Nations physician Dr. Jason Siegfried has figurines of Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Trixie on display on his office windowsill. The figurines are arranged such that it appears Rainbow Dash is on trial. While looking at the figurines, Phoenix mentally notes that he's having "the strangest case of déjà-vu".

Toonwriter is writing his own unofficial sequel to Turnabout Storm that is also an unofficial sequel to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies. It takes place after season four of the MLP series, with Rarity being arrested for the murder of a security guard named "Gold Guardian".

  • I'm enjoying the crap out of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright for a number of reasons -- among those reasons being it kinda reminds me of Turnabout Storm, with Nick learning to incorporate the knowledge of magic in his cases.

  • What ever happened to the games? In the first game, the trials last only three days. In the other games, they only last two. What's up with that?

    • HOLD IT!!!

Part 1 takes place at night and lacks an actual trial (since it ends early) (DAY 1) PART 2 is the first true trial and takes place the next day (DAY 2) PART 3 deals with the events that occur after the trial (DAY 2) PART 4 is part one of the trial for the next day (DAY 3) Part 5 is the latter part of the trial and the rest of the day (DAY 3)

There are two trials with the second one split in two. The first day lacks a trial and just sets up the plot. In between the two trials, there is a period where two sepRate characters are separate for different points...

Essentially, when you combine that with the fact that Phoenix gets through the first trial by accusing someone else, and the fact that Sonata and her role in the story heavily parallels that of a certain other manager, it's pretty clear that Turnabout Storm follows the same format as a certain episode from the second game almost to a fault.

  • If anyone's interested, I've been writing fanfics that Turnabout Storm inspired me to "wright". (Not ashamed of the pun).

Won't share the links til someone asks because I'm still a little to shameful for shameless self advertisement. :P

  • I suspect the author is up to something or another.

Asking around for Athena Cykes sprites, that image of the grown-up CMC, making an animated gif of what appears to be AA5's Mood Matrix...

Good thing I'm not the paranoid type. XD

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/SourceRabbit0/videos With Heavy from Team Fortress 2 as the judge

  • If they were gonna make a sequel, it's obvious Discord would be the defendant...or the prosecution.

  • NeoArtimus uploaded a journal post clearing some things up; including the fact that the sequel is not "cancelled" because of the attacks to the voice actors.

Another link, in case one of the double journal posts is erased.

  • Part 5 is out now.

  • Update straight from the horse's mouth: "Just rendered the finale and will be going off to editors and proof readers tomorrow. Clocks in at a whooping 2:34:00! Hope you don't mind the length, but this is why I had to split part 4 up, otherwise it would have been almost 4 hours long. Hold tight! We're almost there!"

I knew this ending was going to break the 2 hours mark, but dayum!

  • I wish this was a real game. So I can play it and figure out the ending myself. |:(

    • it's being made into a game as we speak, at BronyCan they announced they are working on the game and is gonna be playable via a phoenix wright app called pwlib.

    • It will take a good while before its completed; the conclusion should be long released before the game is even close to coming out. Here's its blog if anyone's interested.

Speaking of this, should we list Turnabout Storm in Fan games in development, or that would be getting ahead of ourselves?

    • I suppose if the game got its own article, or at least a substantial section on this article, it could be listed there. (Well, maybe not the latter; I suppose it'd have to be discussed later)

  • If Part 5 doesn't come out when December ends, I'm gonna be pissed.

  • Pretty impressive article for what you got here.

Though as a side note, may I suggest branching this article into multiple pages for each part of the story? Perhaps that'll make it better on the eyes. Sometimes dividing into paragraphs doesn't cut it.

  • I think that the "Cancelled sequel" section is not necessary. I mean, the potential sequel never reached even a writing stage like to say it might have been a thing. Also, I'm pretty sure we weren't even into Part 3 when that announcement was made, and I believe that's far too early like to say this is both an ultimatum and that is necessary to note.

  • This well-done crossover is what made me an Ace Attorney fan.

  • It's been about 5 months since part 4. It's never been that long before between each part. It's probably gonna be the longest part of the series.

    • Yup. NeoArtimus said this part would be the longest in the series, as in 2+ hours long. Just imagine how long we would have had to wait if the conclusion had not been divided in two.

    • It took fans 9 months for Part 4 to come out.

  • Anyone know when the next part will be out?

  • Oh great, I heard that it's being hosted by Spax3 of all people on his Game Toon Zone website.

Give people another reason to dislike it.

    • Who's Spax3?

    • Dude, get over the past.  I've learned from my mistakes and am tired of repeatedly stating this.  I'm good friends with NeoArtimus and I was helping her with the project in ways since Part 3.  I'm actually contributing a lot more these days to the pony community and I really don't see anyone else complaining about it. :/

  • I have a feeling that this next part is going to be broken up in two chuncks, like part three was. Since it's really not possible to do it otherwise, without sacrafising quality or content

Also, reguarding the cancled sequal, because of youtube hatters; c'mon really? I;ve been posting videos on youtube for years and have recieved any and all kinda of negative comments on them. From straight up dislike to borderline threats demanding i make changes to it. Though on hte other hand. I've gotten a lot of possitve ones too. Praising my work and asking for hints on when i'll post another one. So you have to take these things with a grain of salt.

Plus, i've seen those comments there talking about. Most of them look like a 4 year old typed them on a sugar rush. Filled with gramical and spelling errors. Some even full of jumbles of letters that arn't even words.

I'ved enjoyed this series a lot. It's actually one of the reasons i got into mlp, since i'm a huge Phonix Right fan. Much like Doctor Whooves and Assistant did, do to the same reason. So ironically i had to get used to the 'official' voice actors of the series when i started watching it. Not hte other way around.

  • i believe the owner of turnabout storm, should put the turnabout storm sequel into a vote, so the viewers could decide if there should be a sequel or not. just a thought

  • The series is not cancelled.

  • This series is so good, it inspired me to buy the first three Phoenix Wright games on WiiWare. Also getting Ace Attorney 5 when it comes out. ;D

  • I wonder if they're gonna be two versions of part 5. One with Pheonix talking to Sonata, and one with Twilight talking with Trixie.

  • Why? Why?! WHY do I do this to myself?!?

"Oh, hey, an MLP/Phoenix Wright crossover! This should be interesting! GASP! Wow, it's actually really good! But it's six hours long! And it's after midnight! Looks like I'm pulling another all-nighter! Huhuhuhuh!"

And then I get the teaser for Part 5/4?!? Are you kidding me?!?

...What point was I trying to make? Oh, yeah. This series is freaking awesome.

    • I know. What a ripoff. If there's a Part 6/4, I'm gonna be pissed.

    • Now Now guys lets give them the benefit of the doubt. The exact reason there may not be sequel could be due to this! People getting mad (even thought its a joke) over a little wait. I say let em break for a month or 2 then let em resume at their pace. Not everyone has free time to commment on things and such.

Just support em and they will deliver!

  • pleaseeeeee tell me there is another part.

Honestly, who gives a damn how they sound?! does anyone realize how hard it is to find enough bronies and people who maybe not even like the show to work together? it isnt easy! Even if there is not voice actors, I CAN STILL READ. I demand a sequel!

Also, please hurry with part 5/4. I am a new brony fan and i am really excited to see the end of this trial!

  • Wait a minute.

If the next part is gonna be a trial, what about Cruise Control's second locks and not to mention Trixie's black locks. It it were to end in the next part, then there wouldn't be any need to unlock them. Could it be they're just for show?

    • The black Locks can't be broken. In Apollo Jusice Ace Attorney Kristop Gavin has black locks and they are never broken, and Controls locks could easily be explained in 5/4.
