Well, this roc wasn’t the one who was supposed to be guarding the relic, but he does know who was. That roc, though, hasn’t returned from tracking down recent baby-roc-explosions yet.

Undoubtedly so! That filly is stealing things all over the place! She must have taken advantage of the confusion while she was absconding with the relic, and purloined a roc egg as well in order to sabotage the observatory. She’ll be after the one you got from the maze next!
Luckily, the bat ponies thought of this, and managed to grab it while the roc was attacking them. Best night guards ever!
The roc was kind of hoping you’d tell him that, actually.
The formation scattered due to an attack on their henge; somehow, in all the confusion, none of the rocs noticed that an egg was missing until very recently. They have no idea who took it, let alone for what sinister purpose.
Several of them are still out searching, by tracking the energy emitted from the baby roc’s explosions; it was pure chance that he found the observatory and the bat ponies first.
The roc came looking for the egg, and found them instead.
Although understandably upset, he calmed down once they explained what had happened, and proved to be a most gracious host. They were just finishing up lunch before they went to look for you and the baby roc.
And, well, you know the rest.
