FAQ

Q.  I'm working my own project; can I use some of the art from this one?

A.  This project uses the CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license.  Check the Art Credits page if you are looking for who to credit for art.

Q. Help! Sounds don't work!

A. -If you see the message "incorrect directX version" on the options page, see the documentation page for a link to the correct version to install.

-Try turning the volume slider up a bit in the options menu - the default is very low as to not blow out anyone's speakers.

-Try using the latest version of Desktop Ponies from the download page.

-Make sure sounds are enabled in the options menu.

Q. OMG you absolutely must add *art for every other pony* and in their Galla dresses! /

Can you make Trixie look more smug? /

Can you make a Fluttershy that is wearing this skimpy outfit please? (whoa, what!?)

A.  I actually don't do ANY of the art, just the programming.  If you have a request, think about posting it on the ponychan thead (linked on main page).  If someone else is an artist, has the time, and feels the same way about Fluttershy as you do, you may get your wish!  However, please be polite and realize that in all probability no one will have the time or inclination to do so.  Most of the time the individual artists come up with the ideas themselves, and like them enough to do the work themselves.

Q.  What do I need to use this?

A.  A windows machine with the .Net framework 3.5 (get it here).  Note that just having .Net 4 won't work - it is not backwards compatible.

Q.  I found a bug.  How do I report it?

A.  Use the contact page on this web site, or post in the PonyChan thread!

Q.  Does it work on Linux/mac?

A.  Nope, but there is a (bit outdated) java port.  See the main page for a link.

Q. Isn't this just the same as Shimej, etc?

A. Pretty much. Shimeji I hear is much better, but it's in Japanese.  This is at least in enlgish with english configuration files so you can easily make your own ponies (or not even ponies if you want).  Also, i've had fun writing this so I would have done it anyway.

Q.  The download says it is "signed"?  What is that?

A.  The downloads have a digital signature so that you can prove it came from me, the original author.  I don't mind if anyone else modifies the code and puts out their version, but at least no one can claim they are me this way.  Check the Contact page for the public key.

Q.  Is this open source?

A. Yes! It is. All downloads include the source, which is in Visual Basic (Visual Studio 2010 express).  I don't mind if you use the code for anything else (not that you would actually want to :) ).

Q.  Ugh, Visual Basic, really?

A. Shush, you.

Q.  Even knowing that it is in Visual Basic, I might actually want to use some of the code.  How do I cite you? (someone really asked this!  I was amazed!)

A.  "Desktop Ponies code written by [email protected] - http://desktopponies.com/"

Q.  I made a patch that fixes x and/or adds a new feature.  Want it?

A.  I'll take a look at it, sure.  E-mail me using the contact page!

Q.  You need a forum instead of relying on PonyChan.  You need a better web host - did you know that half the time the alternate download links are corrupt (or time out)?

A.  I'm a cheapskate.  PonyChan and this free web host lets me do everything for free.   You're welcome to try and start your own forum though - I don't have the time to maintain or moderate one.

Q.  The PonyChan thread is on autosage!

A.  Yeah, that's pretty normal.  /collab/ is slow enough that it can survive for months, don't worry.

Q.  The documentation is kind of lacking...

A.  Documentation takes time, which I usually use fixing things instead.  At least it is not as bad as Eve Online ( : ] ).

Q.  Who are you!?!

A.  Just a lonely anonymous Brony who likes his anonymity.  I went to a meetup once though.

Q.  Lyra or Heartstrings.

A.  Lyra Heartstrings in a pinch.  She'll always be Lyra to me (and the same with the rest of the background ponies).

Q.  Uh.  Ponies?  Are you a ... 'brony'?

A.  This isn't the best place to discuss this.  Wait, how did you even get here?
