    (FAE) Pimp My/Our FAE Characters!

    Hi everybody, in line with some of my other threads, I thought I'd create somewhere to put up FAE character builds for discussion. I'm going to be adding to it as myself and my group work through things, but other folks are encouraged to join in.

    It's also a good place to give feedback, since we're all learning this together.

    A really good guide which helped me concoct things comes from Christopher Ruthenbeck on the G+ community, and it goes like this:

    Just keep in mind that aspects tell you what the character can do, approaches tell you how they do it, and stunts call out when they do things better.

    So, here we go!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Veronica Mars (1 Refresh)
    - My Best Friend Was Murdered
    +3 (Good): Sneaky
    +2 (Fair): Clever, Flashy
    +1 (Average): Quick, Careful
    - Because I am a trained detective, I get +2 when I Sneakily overcome obstacles when seeking new information.
    +3 (Good): Careful
    +2 (Fair): Clever, Sneaky
    Re: (FAE) Pimp My/Our FAE Characters!
    Now onto the MLP:FIM characters!
    I think FAE is a fantastic MLP RPG framework right out of the box. The only change I've made is to expand the possible aspect total to 6, since everyone has an Element of Harmony.
    Because there are six approaches and six main characters, I made sure that each Approach is top tier once and bottom tier once, to create variety. This does produce some odd effects in places, but overall I'm pleased with results.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Twilight Sparkle (1 Refresh)

    - High Concept: Princess Celestia’s Favourite Student of Magic
    - Trouble: Terrified of Failure and Prone to Over-Planning
    - Element of Magic
    - Inexperienced Outside of Books
    - New to Ponyville
    - Mentor to Spike

    +3 (Good): Clever
    +2 (Fair): Careful, Forceful
    +1 (Average): Flashy, Sneaky
    +0 (Mediocre): Quick

    - Because I am more powerful than I realise, I get +2 to Forcefully attack when angry.
    - Because I am a librarian, once per session I can find exactly the right information in books.
    - Because I have a checklist for my checklist, I get +2 to Carefully overcoming obstacles through organisation and communication.
    - Because I am a lateral thinker, I get +2 to Cleverly creating advantages when my friends and I are in danger.
    - Because I am the Element of Magic, once per session I can call on the Elements of Harmony to overcome otherwise insurmountable obstacles.

    Stress: ()()()

    Consequences:

    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Rainbow Dash (3 Refresh)
    - High Concept: High-Performance Racer
    - Trouble: Insecurity
    - Element of Loyalty
    - Weather Worker
    - Highly Competitive
    - Act First, Plan Later
    +3 (Good): Quick
    +2 (Fair): Flashy, Forceful
    +1 (Average): Clever, Sneaky
    +0 (Mediocre): Careful
    - Because I can fly fast, I get +2 to Quickly overcome environmental obstacles.
    - Because I am as good as I think I am, I have +2 to Flashily create advantages by manipulating the weather
    - Because you’re not as good as me, I have +2 to Forcefully defending from attempts to Create Advantage.
    Stress: ()()()
    Consequences:
    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Rarity (3 Refresh)

    - High Concept: Ambitious Unicorn Fashion-Designer and Gem-Hunter
    - Trouble: Drama Queen
    - Element of Generosity
    - Sister to Sweetie-Belle
    - Fastidious Wherever Possible
    - Strong and self-reliant

    +3 (Good): Sneaky
    +2 (Fair): Flashy, Quick,
    +1 (Average): Careful, Clever
    +0 (Mediocre): Forceful

    - Because I am a creative diva, I get +2 to Flashily overcoming obstacles or creating advantages through designing and making clothes.
    - Because I solve problems indirectly, I have +2 to Sneakily creating advantages when concealing the whole truth.
    - Because I am fit and athletic, I have +2 to Quickly overcoming environmental obstacles.

    Stress: ()()()

    Consequences:

    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Rarity is an odd case: on paper she looks like a strong case for having Flashy at peak, but in the Rarity-focus episodes she frequently solves problems by lying or concealing information: she pretends to be Applejack during the Sisterhooves Social, and spends an entire episode pretending to be a high-society girl, which includes concealing her past.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Applejack (3 Refresh)

    - High Concept: Industrious Farm Manager
    - Trouble: Self-Perfectionist with a Lot of Responsibilities
    - Element of Honesty
    - Head of the Apple Family
    - Highly Competitive
    - Pays attention to other ponies

    +3 (Good): Forceful
    +2 (Fair): Careful, Quick
    +1 (Average): Clever, Flashy
    +0 (Mediocre): Sneaky

    - Because I am good at empathy, I get +2 to Carefully creating advantages when dealing with other ponies.
    - Because I grew up on the farm, I have +2 to Quickly overcoming environmental obstacles
    - Because I am strong, I have +2 to Forcefully overcoming physical obstacles.

    Stress: ()()()

    Consequences:

    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Applejack and Rainbow Dash have the same 'competitive' Aspect because that's something that frequently pulls them both into an escalating spiral during the show.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Fluttershy (3 Refresh)

    - High Concept: Animal Loving Pegasus
    - Trouble: Shy and Easily Frightened, but with Rage Issues
    - Element of Kindness
    - Can Technically Fly
    - Patient to a Point
    -

    +3 (Good): Careful
    +2 (Fair): Clever, Sneaky,
    +1 (Average): Forceful, Quick,
    +0 (Mediocre): Flashy

    - Because I have Rage Issues, I get +2 to Forcefully overcoming obstacles when annoyed.
    - Because I speak to the animals, I have +2 to Carefully create advantages and overcome obstacles when dealing with non-pony creatures.
    - Because I know it’s for their own good, I have +2 to Sneakily creating advantages when convincing animals and ponies of something.

    Stress: ()()()

    Consequences:

    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Pinky Pie (3 Refresh)
    - High Concept: Enthusiastic Party Animal
    - Trouble: Socially Oblivious and Understands More Than She Can Explain
    - Element of Laughter
    - “...And whatever it is Pinkie Pie does.”
    - Perfect Memory... Including Of Being Alone.
    -
    +3 (Good): Flashy
    +2 (Fair): Forceful, Quick
    +1 (Average): Careful, Sneaky
    +0 (Mediocre): Clever
    - Because I don’t have to make sense, once per scene I get a +2 to Forcefully create an advantage assuming a hastily-summoned gadget or tool would help.
    - Because I have Pinkie Senses, I have +2 to Quickly create advantages by predicting danger
    - Because I am a prankster, I have +2 to Flashily create an advantage when surprising someone else.
    Stress: ()()()
    Consequences:
    Mild (2):
    Moderate (4):
    Severe (6):
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Many thanks to Christopher Ruthenbeck, Jason Cox, Bryce Perry, and Joshua O'Kelley from the G+ community.

    Given enough time, I might start working on the Homestuck characters...

    Neat! I like the discussions of how and why they're built how they are.

    I quite agree. One quibble so far:

    Twilight Sparkle (1 Refresh)
    - Because I am a librarian, once per session I can find exactly the right information in books.
    IIRC, it is a running gag throughout the series that Twilight can never find The Really Important Book She Needs To Locate Right Now Or Terrible Things Will Happen on her own in the library. Usually someone else locates it accidentally -- for example, something hurls all the books out of the shelves into a pile all over the floor and the right book just happens to have hit Pinkie in the head.
    Xbox Live: MPH1963

    Oh, and about Exalted Kaorin: Kimura, thy days are numbered. In single digits.

    ...You have a compelling point. Actually, that might be a worthwhile addition to the stunt: "I can find exactly the right information in books, presuming I'm working with other people." We could call it "Unlucky Librarian."

    Cool Re: (FAE) Pimp My/Our FAE Characters!

    I tried my hand at Jace Beleren from Magic: The Gathering. I think the first two stunts might need some work as they are directly related to the changes I made to FAE to run a MtG-based game.

    Re: (FAE) Pimp My/Our FAE Characters!

    Speaking of Magic, I almost wrote a fan novel (couldn't quite plot it out properly) about a ordinary Joe accidentally summoned into a Planeswalker duel who is saved from certain death by a Serra Angel, with the result that both are now fugitives from the victorious Planeswalker (who's upset because the Angel's conscience overrode whatever it is that makes summoned creatures obey their summoner even if given suicidal orders). They get to meet other iconic cards like the Benalish Heroine and the prodigal Sorcerer as they try to stay alive and figure out a way to send Joe home.

    Sounds like a FAE campaign that would be very interesting.

    Bit late to the party (I got here chasing a link from another thread), but one thing stuck out a bit:

    Mmm...well, yes, I agree that FAE makes for a great match to MLP as well. However, not "everybody" in the show actually has an Element of Harmony; that's just the Mane Six and part of what makes them in particular stand out. As such, it sounds a bit weak as a justification for a special sixth aspect for such a campaign -- if I wanted to play one of the secondary characters, a background pony, or even somebody completely original, what would my "Element" aspect be then, exactly?

    Now what I could see more readily is every (adult) pony getting an extra aspect to reflect their cutie mark and related talent instead...

    That's fair - I was thinking of it in a context where everybody's wanted to play the mane six in games so far. Lose that context and it either wouldn't make sense, or the cutie mark suggestion would work well.
