  1. >Back and forth, she paced throughout the room.
  2. >Imprints of her hooves began to sink into the rose-colored floor.
  3. >The clues were together, but it seemed too simple, almost as if it was planned.
  4. >Looking to the ceiling, she notices the final clue.
  5. >Water began to drop from it, right in the one place no one looked.
  6. >"Marshall didn't take the Ultima Unicorn Spell Book," she proclaims.
  7. >Placing her hat onto her head, Marelock looked around the room once more.
  8. >The grandmaster clock chimes seven times, alerting that the new hour had sprung.
  9. >Neighson looked to her in confusion.
  10. >"But, if he didn't take the book, who did?"
  11. >Turning on the heel of her hooves, Marelock spins around to face Neighson.
  12. >"It was none other than AAAANNNNNOOOOONNNNNNNN!"
  13. >You are forcibly removed from your train of thought.
  14. >The sun shines brightly as you read under the shade of a tree just outside your home.
  15. >Looking up from your reading material, you meet face to face with a smiling Pinkie Pie.
  16. >Letting out an annoyed sigh, you bend the corner of the page and close your book.
  17. "What is it Pinkie?"
  18. >She removes a newspaper from her saddlebag and places it on your lap.
  19. >The front page displays the newspaper name "Appleloosan Courier".
  20. >In big, bold print, a large "WANTED" is on front.
  21. >A picture of a minotaur is displayed, sporting a cliché cowboy hat and a moustache.
  22. "Where did you get this?"
  23. >Triumphant, she lifts her chin in the air with a smile.
  24. >"The Cakes get newspapers from all around to see how the competition is doing. I asked if I can have them when they were done so we could use them."
  25. >Placing the paper back in her saddlebag, you stand up.
  26. "I'm not doing any bounty hunting. It was a onetime deal."
  27. >As you start walking back to your home, Pinkie follows alongside you.
  28. >"But, Anon! It's an exciting job! It pays well! Think of all the cupcakes you could buy!"
  29. >Placing your hand to your face, you let out another annoyed sigh.
  30. "Listen. It's dangerous. My life is not worth throwing away for a couple of bits!"
  31. >She stands between you and the doorway, trying to think of a way to convince to take up this occupation.
  32. >"Let me ask you Anon. It's been two weeks since the diamond dog incident. How much money do you have left over?"
  33. >Your heart sinks.
  34. >Money management was not your strong suit.
  35. >Eating expensive dinners and nights at the bar quickly vaporized the hundred bits you made.
  36. >You had fifteen bits to your name.
  37. "What does my money have to do with it?" you ask defensively.
  38. >She lowers her eyelids, almost as if she was staring directly into your very soul.
  39. >"You need the money. The job pays for it. You enjoyed it when it was happening. It's the perfect job for you!"
  40. >This was true.
  41. >You had fun piecing the puzzle together to find where the diamond dog was heading next.
  42. >You enjoyed the thrill of coming face to face with danger.
  43. >But most important of all, you enjoyed the money.
  44. >Defeated, you drop your head down and sigh.
  45. "Okay, I'll do it. But only for the money!"
  46. >Pinkie grins triumphantly.
  47. >"I knew you'd come to your senses!"
  48. >She puts her hoof to her chin and taps it.
  49. >"Now the only problem is that disadvantage of yours."
  50. >You raise an eyebrow.
  51. "What 'disadvantage'?"
  52. >Pretending to hold a long object in her hand, she swings towards you head and stops.
  53. >"Remember THAT?"
  54. >Embarrassment fills your face as your cheeks turn a bright red.
  55. "It was a hollow pipe! Of course it wouldn't do anything! I was just desperate."
  56. >She lowers her lids and grins.
  57. >Sweat begins to form on your forehead.
  58. >You begin to open the front door in a panic, only to be blocked off by Pinkie.
  59. >"You need help Anon! Just admit it!"
  60. >Pushing her aside, you enter the house and lock the door.
  61. >As you turn around, Pinkie is in your face again.
  62. "Hu- What? How?"
  63. >Her stare slowly grows into a glare.
  64. >Raising your hands above your head, you admit defeat.
  65. "What do I have to do?"
  66. >She smiles, basking in the glory of her victory.
  67. >"We're going to see a friend of mine! She should be more than helpful."
  68. >As you head out, Pinkie follows, hopping alongside you.
  69. >Her cheerful nature sometimes leaves a sour taste on your tongue.
  70. >Nop0ny should be that happy all the time.
  71. "Pinkie."
  72. >She turns her head and looks at you.
  73. "Why are you always so happy?"
  74. >She stops for a moment and ponders.
  75. >"A failed experiment by my dad. He put an internal endorphin meter in my head so that every time my happiness levels go down I get a kickstart in my brain, releasing more endorphins. This one time it short circuited and bad things happened..."
  76. "Really?"
  77. >She smiles and turns her head to you.
  78. >"Nope!"
  79. >Continuing on her way, you can't help but shake your head.
  80. >She was such a strange pony.
  81. >Maybe it was best to just ignore it.
  82. >As you both advance, you begin to come close to the Everfree Forest.
  83. >Since the day you came to this town, the ponies always warned you to stay out of there.
  84. "Uh, Pinkie? Who exactly is this pony?"
  85. >"She's not a pony, silly. She's a zebra!"
  86. >A zebra?
  87. >That was the first time you heard of a zebra living near Ponyville.
  88. "And she lives in the Everfree Forest?"
  89. >"Yep!"
  90. >Pinkie hops along the trail, heading directly into the dark, shady forest.
  91. >A little hesitant at first, you follow her.
  92. >The darkness quickly consumes your sight as you make out a thin path.
  93. >Bushes rustle as you pass, along with sounds of growls and chirps.
  94. >You see the faint figure of a pony hopping in the distance.
  95. >You begin to run towards it when a sudden small beam of light peers through the trees and almost blinds you.
  96. >In front of you is a small hut in the shape of tree glowed amongst the dark forest.
  97. >An impatient Pinkie waits for you out front.
  98. >"Come on, slowpoke!"
  99. >As you approach her, she knocks on the door.
  100. >The forest goes strangely silent.
  101. >Hoof steps echo throughout the tree house, progressively getting louder as they reach the door.
  102. >The door opens slowly to reveal a zebra with strange hair.
  103. >She smiles as her eyes meet Pinkie's.
  104. >"Ah, Pinkie, such a pleasure seeing you."
  105. >She turns her gaze towards your direction.
  106. >"Who is this that you bring out of the blue?"
  107. >You extend your hand out for a shake.
  108. >Confused, she looks at your hand and back to you.
  109. >Pinkie clears her throat in an attempt to clear the confusion.
  110. >"Zecora, this is Anonymous, the one I told you about!"
  111. >Her eyes widen from this news.
  112. >"Ah, the one who needs help from me, if not for luck, he would not be."
  113. >In almost a flash, anger clouds your mind.
  114. >You turn to Pinkie who quickly turns away, pretending to be interested in a hanging mask.
  115. >Zecora pulls out a long object wrapped in blankets from the corner of her room.
  116. >"It has been long since this has seen day, I had feared it would meet decay."
  117. >Unraveling the blanket, she reveals a long, thin wooden staff.
  118. >It was roughly about five feet in length and had strange writings across it.
  119. >Age was clearly not kind to this rod.
  120. >Clear signs of use litter the stick from top to bottom.
  121. >She places the staff down in front of you.
  122. >"With proper care, this staff will do fine to teach you the ways of the divine."
  123. >You pick up the staff.
  124. >It's quite heavy for being as thin as it is.
  125. "What do you mean 'the divine'?"
  126. >She turns around looking at her own staff.
  127. >"My kind have worked very, very hard, to ensure the future is bright, the divine are the ones who weed out the dark, to make way for light."
  128. >This rhyming was getting annoying.
  129. >You feel it isn't necessary to ask any more questions, so you lift the rod.
  130. "Shall we get started?"
  131. >She nods and grabs her staff, which is smaller than yours, in her mouth.
  132. >All three of you exit the house.
  133. >You and Zecora stand across from each other.
  134. >A question suddenly pops into your head.
  135. >How was she supposed to hol-
  136. >Zecora stands on her hind legs and holds the staff between the bend of her right foreleg while placing the bottom of her left hoof underneath it.
  137. >She takes the tip and puts it to the ground to maintain balance.
  138. >You're actually impressed.
  139. >Not only did she answer your question, but she was able to hold the staff and maintain a position that was comfortable for her.
  140. >She sees your amazement and chuckles.
  141. >"You are amazed at a simple stance, but nothing will compare to my staff's dance!"
  142. >She lifts the staff and heads directly for you.
  143. >In a sudden spur, you lift your staff up and try to defend yourself.
  144. >She retracts her staff as you lift yours for the block and quickly strikes you in the chest.
  145. >The force put into the blow knocks you on your bottom.
  146. >Zecora moves back and regains the same position as before.
  147. >You wipe the dust off as you get back up and get yourself in position.
  148. "That wasn't exactly fair."
  149. >Pinkie interrupts.
  150. >"Are you going to say that to the bounties when they hit you."
  151. >Glaring at Pinkie, you grit your teeth.
  152. >She's right, but she didn't have to butt in.
  153. >She smiles and turns to Zecora.
  154. >"Hey Zecora! You should give Anon here a reward if he hits you! Like a nice sleepover or something."
  155. >She winks in your direction.
  156. >The glare grows thicker now as your gritting echoes through the forest.
  157. >Pinkie takes the hint and turns her head away, whistling.
  158. >As you return to the lesson, a familiar feeling hits your chest.
  159. >The staff has come back to say hello.
  160. >As you butt slams on the ground again, you feel your head start to boil.
  161. >This was getting annoying really quick.
  162. >Standing up, you dust yourself again.
  163. >"Hey Anon!"
  164. >Pinkie continues to jeer.
  165. >'Just ignore her, just ignore her, just ignore her, just ignore her,' you mutter to yourself.
  166. >"If you can beat her, maybe she'll play with your staff!"
  167. >She bursts into a giggle fit and falls over.
  168. "Damn it, Pinkie!"
  169. >On your ass again.
  170. >Zecora sighs and looks down in disappointment.
  171. >"Your focus is too low, it will only bring you down, falling so much will only turn your bottom brown."
  172. >Pinkie's giggle fit turns into uncontrollable laughter.
  173. >Standing up, you look at Zecora's staff and ready yourself.
  174. >Focusing on nothing else, you wait for the strike.
  175. >She makes her way towards you when an idea hits.
  176. >Quickly sliding your hands to the end of the staff, you swing at the ground towards her hind legs.
  177. >Your plan quickly fails as she jumps up and knocks you back again.
  178. >This time, however, you stand your ground.
  179. >She smiles as you readjust your position.
  180. >With no hesitation though, she quickly steps in for another strike.
  181. >Waiting for her hooves to rear back, you quickly step into her space.
  182. >Her eyes widen.
  183. >She has no room to strike.
  184. >Pushing your weight into the staff's end, you align it with her chest.
  185. >She flies back onto her bottom, and beams at you.
  186. >Pinkie's laughing suddenly stops as she stares at you in awe.
  187. >Standing back up, Zecora balances her staff on her back.
  188. >"To hit a master means you learn well, I expect you to quickly excel."
  189. >She kneels on one hoof.
  190. >You return the gesture with a kneel as well.
  191. >"Let us start with a simple strike, then my skills you will learn alike."
  192. >She leads you and Pinkie further into the forest, guiding you to wherever she has planned for you next.
  193. >Immediately, you could hear something like rushing water up ahead.
  194. >The trees immediately thinned out, revealing a fast running river running right down off the edge of a cliff.
  195. >Zecora makes her way towards what seems like a bush and removes it's leaves.
  196. >The bush is revealed to be a dummy made of hay.
  197. >She takes her stance and looks towards your direct.
  198. >"A simple trick, is to strike like so..."
  199. >Without rearing back, she swings her staff horizontally and hits the dummy in the head.
  200. >The dummy lands on its side and quickly springs back up.
  201. >"...Easily knocking down your foe."
  202. >She steps back and waves her hoof, signaling you to take your place.
  203. >You walk up to the rocking dummy and station yourself.
  204. >Zecora quickly stops you and adjusts your position.
  205. >She takes your right foot and places it forward.
  206. >Bringing the staff to your left side, she places your left hand on the lower end and the right to the midsection.
  207. >Pinkie tries to suppress her laughter, but breaks.
  208. >"Zecora, is that how he should handle his staff for now on?"
  209. >She falls to the ground rolling in laughter.
  210. >Before you can even say anything, Zecora grabs hold of your head.
  211. >"Listen closely, focus is key, you must try your hardest to ignore Pinkie!"
  212. >Taking a deep breath, you look at the now motionless dummy.
  213. >You strike quickly as she did and watch as the dummy flops over.
  214. >In almost an instant, the dummy reclaims in position and flings upwards.
  215. >The force from the readjustment knocks into your staff, which in turn smacks your side, knocking you over.
  216. >Zecora sighs and face hooves.
  217. >"Much work we have, your balance is weak, we must change that so you will not reek."
  218. >She grabs her staff and looks to the top of the cliff.
  219. >Placing in on her back, she begins to follow the path leading upwards.
  220. >"Testing your might is important enough, but these conditions absolutely are not that tough. If to it you are not a stranger, you might progress faster through danger."
  221. >You look to Pinkie who merely shrugs and bounces towards Zecora.
  222. >Following in suit, you follow the two up the path.
  223. >As you walk the path of the steep cliff-side, sweat drops down your face.
  224. >Zecora hasn't said a thing or given so much as a sign of being tired.
  225. >Pinkie happily bounces alongside you, wearing her signature grin.
  226. >How in the hell were these two so content with this walk?
  227. >You all reach the top and stand before a raging river under the glaring, hot noon sun.
  228. >Zecora stands in the middle of the river, not far from the edge of the waterfall, on one hoof.
  229. >She signals you to come and mimic her position.
  230. >As you make your way into the river, the force almost knocks you over.
  231. >You regain yourself and slowly make your way to Zecora.
  232. >Pinkie begins to roll around in the grass on the riverside.
  233. >Her squeals of delight can be heard over the rushing water.
  234. >Trying your best, you stand on one leg.
  235. >You look over your shoulder and instantly regret it.
  236. >The fall down to the pool below was tremendous.
  237. >One slip up and there was no way you'd live.
  238. >Zecora sees your face and sighs.
  239. >"Focus and balance are needed most. If you don't utilize them, you are toast."
  240. >Taking a gumball sized gulp, you attempt to lift your leg.
  241. >You begin to feel the rush of the water take over and quickly put your leg back down.
  242. >Deciding to follow her example, you look over at Zecora.
  243. >She is completely focused and doesn't move a single muscle.
  244. >You close your eyes and focus your weight to your right leg.
  245. >Slowly, you bring your leg up.
  246. >The powerful currents attempt to shift you, but they fail.
  247. >Only two things in your thoughts matter at this point.
  248. >Keeping your leg down and not falling to your death.
  249. >You close eyes and continue your focus.
  250. >The sounds of rushing water leave your ears as you train.
  251. >Darkness consumes your vision and no sound enters your mind.
  252. >It's almost as if you're dead.
  253. >Your eyes quickly shoot open as you gaze into the setting sun to ensure that you haven't reached certain doom.
  254. >You look around you to see a now setting sun, Zecora still at your side.
  255. >She opens her eyes and looks at you before placing herself on all fours.
  256. >"Time has flown and left us behind, we shall do this again next time."
  257. >She begins to walk towards the shoreline.
  258. >As you place your foot down, you attempt to follow her.
  259. >Attempt being the keyword, since your leg had turned into dead weight from the cold water and being in the same position too long.
  260. >Dragging your leg across, you slowly make your way to the shore line and find a happy Pinkie sniffing some flowers.
  261. >"Oh! Are you done? Let's go get our bounty now!"
  262. >Zecora shakes her head in disapproval.
  263. >"Pinkie, his training is not yet complete; the bounties he'd fight, he could not compete."
  264. >Pinkie gives out a disgruntled moan and raises her front hooves in the air, only to fall on her back.
  265. >"Ugh! That'll take forever. Can't you just give him a week-long crash course or something?"
  266. >Zecora puts her hoof to her chin and thinks.
  267. >"A week is short, but much can be learned, if that is the motion that is yearned."
  268. >She turns to you.
  269. >Thinking about it, it wasn't best to rush it.
  270. >A great meal took time to prepare and cook and art was never rushed.
  271. "I think it's best we take our time on this. If we rush it, I feel I won't being performing at my best."
  272. >Pinkie quickly interjects.
  273. >"Anon, we don't have much time. The bounty can taken by the time you're done, or killed by some freak accident!"
  274. >This was true.
  275. >Time was of the essence, and there was no telling when the next bounty would come in.
  276. "You make a valid point. So a week will do?"
  277. >Zecora nods.
  278. >Pinkie jumps up and clops her hooves together.
  279. >"It's settled then! A week of training and we take on the bounty. Then you can take it at your own pace when we get back!"
  280. >Suddenly, an unexplainable drum begins to play around you all as Pinkie clears her throat.
  281. > http://youtu.be/PHMIZepcb0A
  282. "Where is that coming from?"
  283. >Zecora grabs her staff and idly looks at you.
  284. >"Do not fret in her singing barrage, it is just a Pinkie montage."
  285. >As the moon begins to rise, she gets in position for a spar.
  286. >You are knocked down multiple times and badly bruised as she uses you for easy practice.
  287. >~"Let's get down to business, to defeat the scallions!"~
  288. >~"Did they send her a filly, when she asked for a stallion?"~
  289. >~"You're the saddest human, I ever met, but you can bet before we're through..."~
  290. >~"Anon, she will make a hero out of you!"~
  291. >The next morning the training begins again.
  292. >Hopping across the raging river on small stones, you slip and hit you head.
  293. >Zecora grabs you from the water, bringing you to shore with her staff, shaking her head in disapproval.
  294. >~"Plain as a doughnut, but as sugary as a pie, once you find you center, you are sure not to die!"~
  295. >~"You're a hairless, pale, pathetic ape, and you haven't got a clue."~
  296. >~"Somehow she'll make a hero out of you!"~
  297. >Hanging by a mere finger in the dim moonlight, you regain your composure and grab a hold of the cliff-side and continue to climb.
  298. ~"I'm never gonna catch my breath! Say good-bye to those who knew me! Boy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym!"~
  299. >The next morning, Zecora beats you down to the ground again in her sparring.
  300. >She shakes her head as she walks away.
  301. ~"She's gonna beat me half to death! Hopefully she doesn't hospitalize me! Now I really wish I wasn't so dim!"~
  302. >You are almost to the top of the tree where the flag sways in sync with the wind.
  303. >The branch you grab snaps from your weight and you hurdle down hitting each branch on the way.
  304. >A disappointed Zecora shakes her head as she picks you up, making sure you aren't badly injured.
  305. >Booming throughout the forest, a chorus begins to sing as well.
  306. >~"A hero!"~
  307. "Where is that coming from?"
  308. >~"Must be as soft as a muffin top!"~
  309. >~"A hero!"~
  310. "No, seriously, I'm freaking out now."
  311. >~"With the hardness of a tough guy!"~
  312. >~"A hero!"~
  313. "Whatever, I'm just going to ignore it."
  314. >~"With all the strength of a jawbreaker! Mysterious as the burnt side of moon pieeeee!"~
  315. >Hitting the dummy in rapid successions, it retracts quickly and knocks you over.
  316. >Zecora gives a disappointed sigh and walks away.
  317. >~"Time is of the essence until all your money's gone."~
  318. >~"Do what she tells you to and you will have won!"~
  319. >~"You're the saddest excuse of a hunter ever, so pack up, go home, you're through."~
  320. >~"How could she make a hero out of you?"~
  321. >Zecora takes your staff and walks into her tree house.
  322. >The look of disappointment on her face shows she's pretty much given up on you.
  323. >Looking at the tree next to her home, you see the flag on top fluttering in the wind.
  324. >As night settles in, you begin to work your way up.
  325. >Zecora walks out as the sun rises to see you sitting at the truck of the tree, holding the flag.
  326. >She smiles as she walks back inside and grabs your staff, handing it to you.
  327. >~"A hero!"~
  328. >~"Must be as soft as a muffin top!"~
  329. >You glide across the rocks and quickly cross the raging river.
  330. >~"A hero!"~
  331. >As if it were as simple as walking, you climb up the cliff-side with ease.
  332. >~"With the hardness of a tough guy!"~
  333. >Zecora's hits are deflected with ease as you block with your staff.
  334. >She smiles at your success.
  335. >~"A hero!"~
  336. >~"With all the strength of a jawbreaker! Mysterious as the burnt side of moon pieeeee!"~
  337. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  338. >After finishing your meal, you look up from your now empty bowl.
  339. "Thanks again for the training and food, Zecora. I owe you big time."
  340. >She shakes her hoof.
  341. >"It is no problem, do not fret, some of you bounty I will get."
  342. >A fair trade, if you do say so yourself.
  343. >She takes your bowl and hands you your staff.
  344. >"One last thing, we must test, to see if in battle you are best."
  345. >You stand up and follow Zecora out of the house.
  346. >She leads you to the familiar pool where Pinkie waits impatiently.
  347. >"Finally! You guys take foreeeeever."
  348. >Pinkie climbs up your back and wraps her hooves around your neck.
  349. "Pinkie, get off."
  350. >You attempt to take her off, but she holds on tight.
  351. >Zecora raises her hoof and clears her throat.
  352. >"Your final test is not so small, the trial of the elements is your final call."
  353. >You point at Pinkie on your back.
  354. "So why does she have to be on my back?"
  355. >Zecora shakes her head.
  356. >"Patience and focus are the key, they surely will be tested with Pinkie."
  357. >Great, just what you needed.

  362. >This was surely a test of wits.

  364. >She stretches her neck to your face and looks into your eyes.
  365. >"Well, all six of us had to go through the Everfree Forest and get to a castle thingy to find our elements."
  366. >So it was an obstacle course in other words.
  367. >Fun.
  368. >Pinkie rolls her eyes.
  369. >"I proposed an all night stamina test, if you know what I mean, but Zecora just called me a fool."
  370. >Letting out an annoyed sigh, you smack her lightly in the back of the head with your staff.
  371. "Damn it, Pinkie."
