See the end of the work for more notes ***** The nothingness of his mind *****    -  “There's the beautiful people and then there's the rest of us.” ― Thom Yorke . . . -   The first time Max saw David it was during the summer break.     He had already finished signing himself up for another year of working in the camp after contacting Campbell’s lawyers about it, the old man was out for a business trip in Thailand and was probably way too busy with feeding his illegal gambling addiction to care who is in charge of his own camp unless he's there.   Max wasn't complaining though, so far, he liked working in the shitty little camp that provided him enough money to survive and stay away from his parents as much as he could and he was working with two other co-counselors who he surprisingly didn't hate and thought they were pretty cool despite their weirdness.   He was a man in his early twenties that up until last year was still living with his parents. While he was incredibly intelligent, cunning and physically attractive, he, unfortunately, didn't have many bright expectations towards his future. He was a man who fitted perfectly the stereotype of someone who couldn't "reach their full potential", despite his great grades in school and his high thinking skills; it was just that he was always too lazy and hardly ever cared about his life.   He was pathetic but he wasn't as pitiful as you would expect him to be, he was a bitter man with a bitter mind, he liked to think he hated everyone outside his home life but of course, it wasn't the case with his friends in the camp and the kids who arrive at Camp Campbell every year.  He felt a twinge of sadness. These children come from homes where their parents would rather throw their young ones in the hands of a complete stranger just so they will catch a break from the kids they birthed. Parents, who didn't take their roles with the responsibility they needed.     He was cruel but he wasn’t heartless when people asked him why he gave so much damn about that.    Nikki was a great counselor with her natural enthusiasm and the energy that she never lacked but she was reckless and overly clumsy with the kids' limits when it came to certain activities that they just couldn't handle. She was oblivious and blamed her campers for their laziness and lack of interest in the most important things in nature and her own twisted definition of fun.  Neil, on the other hand, was the opposite from Nikki. He was reasonable and well aware of the campers' comfort, he showed great care and responsibility for his job and if it weren't for his anti-social and cold behavior sometimes he would definitely be the best suitable man for this job and would win the hearts of many campers.     And then there was him, and he already knew that he wasn't a special case.     He didn't hate his campers but he wasn't very fond of them either since kids generally seemed to be a bother for him. He often stayed away from the camp's activities unless it involved any typical dangerous game that the crazy green- haired co-counselor made the children participate with and he had to watch over so things wouldn't go over her head like last time.   When he didn't spend his time in the cabin getting drunk or smoking he would lean over a tree outside and watch over the kids who were in the middle of an activity that his friends prepared for them, not moving too close so they wouldn't notice him and mistake him for a creep yet not distancing himself so he could still get a clear view.   All the kids were the same for him. He recognized them by their facial expressions and he didn't put too much of an effort to remember them. Disgust for the food that was served in the cafeteria, shock for when Nikki forced them to do an impossible task, boredom when Neil started with his morning lectures, and misery when they were forced to go outside and do something with their boring lives instead of to just chill in their tents with their cell-phones in front of their faces all day.   It was all so familiar and known, he didn't even pay much attention to some of them anyway and that's of course besides—     The kid.   He remembered his name to be David, yet everyone insisted calling him Davey. Perhaps it was their way to mock him or just stick to this nickname because it was "cute" or something but even Max had to agree that this little red-head child was different, almost special in his own way.   He saw him get out of the bus when he first got here with the rest of the new campers and he was completely unremarkable, this child, just like everything else in his life. He will forget him soon enough at the beginning of the summer when the rest of the staff would be too busy with the preparations for the activities and he will be too busy doing nothing and just be slacking off from his job.   And that kid was right there with his grinning face that was mixed with slight smug among the rest of the group of kids that were waiting for a summer full of adventures and to be a part of the activity that they were signed up for.   It was a hassle to explain to those broken-hearted little children that the big, bad boss of the camp had lied to them and their parents just so he could get some cash in his pockets and neglect the consequences of taking care of the angry kids who demanded an explanation as to why their camps sucked so much. And honestly, Max could care less about the trouble of trying to calm the little brats down and save himself a headache.   But the ginger child was still there, not looking very pleased but far from being angry or disappointed in what he got, and it was only found out later that his parents didn't really sign him up for any certain activity and that's why he was so apathetic about it.     He was really something.     And it wasn't just for the way he looked so utterly out of place and different from the rest. That Max started to pay more attention to the little campers, specifically at David.   He wasn't very annoying at the beginning; he was the only one who managed to stay awake throughout Neil's boring lectures and he, unlike the others tried to show some interest in Nikki's games and ideas for the day...even if his smiles were forced. This kid was definitely trying his hardest to behave and not cause trouble to the adults and the other campers.     And Max Paid attention to him very, very, carefully.     Up until now, he wasn't exactly aware of how wrong it sounded or even looked from another person's view. He was a young man who did nothing positive ever in his life and nothing of it changed when he even got the chance of trying to improve his bad habits by getting a decent job to work with wonderful children with a big bright potential on this beautiful island.   But the moment he starts noticing this strange looking child, an individual that has arrived at this camp, he almost immediately drops his cigarette to the ground and moves a little closer from his usual spot to spy on the new morning activity that the campers and the counselors were participating at. He didn't think it would be so alarming when Neil spotted him standing close to them and just plainly gazing at their doings.     "Decided to join us?"     It snapped Max back to reality hearing his co-counselors voice call for him. Neil sounded doubtful and his blue eyes suspected Max was up to something that he wasn't aware of and luckily for the suspecting brunet, Max managed to shake his head and just mutter an apology and explain that he was just mildly curious for what they were doing. Nikki, to his unfortunate luck, eyed him with excitement on her face as her pink pupils widened to the size of a candy bar and she demanded him to help them with her "totally safe and not dangerous idea” that she came up with.     And of course, he wanted to protest.     And of course, they didn't want him to.   And David was just there and Max noticed how relatively tidy he looked, how clean he had always looked, without a speck of dirt or mud on his yellow shirt or his brown pair of overalls that he always wore. And that this child, for a single moment, looked at him with the same curiosity a kid would have when he meets someone new and it was clear to the raven-haired counselor that this boy probably never saw him in the camp until now and that all this time, he was just an invisible ghost on this island that crept on his friends and the campers during the summer.   And it felt wrong; it felt really, really, wrong and sick and pathetic that he wasted his time here, doing nothing, and helping nobody with the work that HE had to do in the first place and his friends who loved him and respected him and that his behavior never bothered him because of it.     The guilt forced Max to join Nikki and Neil to the camp activity they prepared...     And surprisingly it wasn't as bad as he thought it might have been when he heard for the first time the soft laughter of pleased children fills the air as they were actually satisfied with how it all worked out for them eventually.   Neither Nikki nor Neil dared to admit it that it was because Max that their task turned into a success and that he proved to be actually great with the campers unlike what they both thought.     Max didn't dare to admit that he was intensively staring at the redhead's smile from the happy crowd...feeling sickly sweet sensation enter his numb body as it introduced him to a whole new feeling that he never thought he might experience.   ===============================================================================   The second time Max met David he was prepared and practically more careful.    The child was wandering on a Saturday morning, probably with nothing better to do in his free time and the raven-haired man suspected that he didn’t have many friends or none at all, or maybe he was just done with his chores and had to wait until the rest of the campers will be finished so he could join them back to their tents.   But either way, it was a great chance to finally try his luck in socializing with him, without being weird about it like he used to in the past and hold onto the sickness that he felt that day, because he knew something was wrong with him and yet he never tried to understand that or bothered with his flaws and inner issues. Perhaps he was sick of trying to be by himself all the time, pretending like he enjoyed his isolation or maybe it was just that this kid was so fascinating it was hard not to feel a little drawn to him.   He made the first move by slowly approaching him from behind, trying his hardest to not startle the red-headed boy when he spoke to him; he was too ashamed to admit it was his first time when he tried to talk to a camper at all.     "Got nothing else to do?"     David turned to face him, expecting it to be one of his counselors that would often ask him about his wellbeing but when he saw it was actually Max who was behind him, the child couldn't help but let a little smile curl in the corner of his lips. Max felt slightly better about himself knowing that this little boy probably didn't hate him or thought him to be a creep. He was so scared that the kid would when he saw him approach him this way.   The boy proved to Max that he was, in fact, as special as he thought he might be at the beginning. Davey wouldn't stop laughing at his jokes even when Max knew he was just trying to be polite to him and didn't really get what they meant. He cringed at his curses but tried not to say anything about it to the older man and Max found this child to be quite a nice company despite his earlier insecurities about him. This child proved to be positive and fun to be around with and filled the man with so much strange and warm emotion that he thought he might suffocate on it. And he thought to himself...     That maybe he and Davey could become friends if it was even possible.   The child told him his name and Max nodded despite already knowing the answer. He was polite enough to answer back when usually he would just keep quiet and walk away with a frown whenever someone asked him for his name.     But Davey wasn't a stranger.   And every time he forced himself to think that he felt more surprisingly sicker than before.   There was something wrong with the way it sounded or perhaps it was the hidden meaning in those words that made him want to rip out his skin in shame because he was really so damn pathetic, stupid, and a gross human being who considered a child to be his first friend in this place and the only person he could rely on not to be such a pain in the ass.     A child who was no older than ten years old and probably had nothing to do with a miserable adult like him in his life.   And Max felt really terrible for just thinking about it,  so he stopped .    ===============================================================================   It wasn't until the middle of the summer that Max started to wonder more about David since their first meeting outside the camp's activities. He found out that this kid was already growing comfortable with him as well. For an instance, the kid learned to tell Max things that bothered him a lot since the first day he met him.   It sounded a little rude and annoying that a little boy would tell an apathetic guy like him to quit smoking so much just because it was unhealthy and made him uncomfortable and start joining more with him to the certain activities that he had to take part in. Of course, it earned the boy an annoyed grumble from Max but the kid was persistent as if knowing that he will do as he asks. In which Max did.  Without thinking much about it Max put the cigarettes on his nightstand down and started smoking less around the camp and avoiding doing that in front of David and the rest of the little campers in the groups that he decided to try and help with.   He thought nothing about it in the beginning but the way Nikki wrapped her muscled arms around his shoulders and squealed in delight seeing that her grumpy little friend was for once trying to do something fun and enjoyable brought a strange feeling of satisfaction in him especially when he saw in the corner of his eye the sly yet proud grin Neil flashed to him that morning when Nikki announced that they were about to head to the lake.     "Do we really fuckin' have to?"     Feeling slight guilt for cursing next to the kids, he brushed it off of his chest and focused on Nikki's overly excited face that kept screaming that she had been longing to do this the whole weekend and had waited for the perfect chance, so of course, he and the rest of the camp were going to join her.   He didn't really pay any attention towards what was happening when they entered the lake as he promised. It took one simple glance to see Nikki dragging Neil after her to jump in the water and hear the excited screams of the campers to see things were going fine. It wasn't until he saw that David was standing right beside him and looking at him curiously, which wasn't enough to scare the raven-haired man but enough to raise some questions in his head.     "Cat got your tongue kid what you're waitin' for?"   The child smiled in embarrassment and chuckled nervously, not noticing the intense gaze that the older man fixed on him.   "I dunno, I guess I was just wondering why you were not going in. Aren't you coming?"     Kids will be kids...     Max let out a long sigh escape from his lips while he rubbed his face with frustration. This child never seemed to annoy him until now and he had to glare at David to see if the kid would get what he was saying through his body language. But he soon started to regret that decision when he focused his attention on the boy a little bit too much than he originally planned to because soon his quick glance becomes a long stare, his cyan eyes roaming the kid's body from every possible spot the boy had.   He didn't even notice how this kid really looked like until this very day; how slim and smooth his skin looked without his baggy yellow shirt on. No piece of clothing could hide away the curvature in the child's waist and the visible plumpness in the shape of his lips and his hips. His skin looked almost creamy with the sunlight of the summer that reflected on his clean innocent body.     He was so unbelievably pure, so precious and right in every way possible like a ripe fruit on a branch ready to be picked. And Max felt so sick with himself; so disgusted that all of his past self-hatred returned to him back like a slap in the face out of nowhere.     How fucking dare he? How fucking could he even begin to look at a child this way?     He wasn't even sure what he hated more: the fact that he noticed it only now or that he secretly wished he could erase the image of the boy that he pictured so disgustingly and so lewd, so sick and terribly wrong in his head and wished he had never looked at David like this in the first place.   He felt gross because he betrayed the kid's trust that day. That he was the only normal fucking person on this fucking island and that Max had such sick and disgusting thoughts about him and it made him feel so terribly awful and worthless that he wanted to vomit right now...right here in this place. To throw up all the nastiness away as if it was just a disease in the pit of his stomach.     But that wasn’t the worst part of it.   Seeing this oblivious little boy shrug and instead joined in with the other kids in the water, his tiny little thighs jiggling so carefully with every move that he made, and the giggles that escaped his lips so softly; like a melody in the wind, not to mention how his red hair looked so perfectly messy and attractive in the water.     Oh...     Oh, Max was so worthless and disgusting.   So sick and so terribly wrong.   God, golly please let this be a fucking joke.     When he walked away from the lake and further into the forests he was thanking whatever God that existed that no one saw him leave and call out for him since he wasn't even sure what he might do if he stays there. Max didn't deserve them. He didn't deserve friends like Nikki and Neil by his side and to be a part of this beautiful place.   He didn't deserve someone like David and he knew it. He forced that thought, deep, deep into his little despicable brain...so deep that he started to bleed.     But that was ok because he learned to like the pain when he deserved it; hitting his head so hard against the wall of his cabin and letting all of the disgust wash away in the cold shower until he felt slightly cleaner than before.   Until he felt like he could come back to his usual self. The same old Max that would keep his calm, bored expression on his face, the same usual him that will sneak bottles of liquor to his cabin in the middle of the night from Campbell's cabinet when no one's watching and the same old him—  The same old him that will continue to hang around with little Davey, murdering every wrong thought in his head when it reminded him of how terribly delicious he looked this morning in his swimsuit.     ===============================================================================   What he didn't realize is that he and his little friend had grown very close to each other.     Very, very, close indeed.     Last week when they finished with making home-made ice cream for everyone and even the quartermaster had managed to improve his cooking skills to everyone's pleasant surprise, it was safe to say this day was one of the best in Max's life the whole time he had to spend in the camp. He and Davey sat by the bridge and sucked on popsicles that Max had bought him when the activities ended.   The way David behaved around Max today made the raven-haired man wonder if there was something wrong with the little redhead. It took him a while to notice the unusual and faint red blush that appeared on the kid's face and the little glances the green-eyed child gave him once in a while. Sure, it was weird if not almost creepy but when he had to think about it, it made him stop breathing.     The boy was starting to develop a crush on him.    An innocent, juvenile crush on a man who he shouldn't even be talking to; if only he knew what the hell was going on in the damaged,  sick  brain of his beloved counselor.     Max tried to ignore it the hardest he could, the rapid beating of his heart increasing when Davey fixed his large, timid eyes on him. As if he longed for something deeper in him, deeper in the little relationship that they have developed at the beginning of the summer.   Max didn't want to indulge the child here but what the hell was he supposed to do when the kid started to cling to him. He became so terribly soft around Davey, almost allowing the boy everything he desired whether it was the bags of candies that he knew that Max always kept some for him in the pockets of his blue hoodie or just taking him somewhere else after the activities in the camps were done.   Max soon found out that they started to share too much time together and that Nikki mockingly joked about it, claiming that the camper started to like him a little bit too much and how hilarious it looked in her eyes.     Oh, how awful it can be for wanting a child that just happens to like you back huh...     But Max couldn't take any advantage of this situation. He already felt like dying just by thinking about David when he shouldn't, in ways he shouldn't.   It never occurred to him this child might be suffering from some night terrors sometimes, complaining that he can't sleep in the tents anymore and that he needed someone to help him out. And Max hated the fact that this kid, out of all the people in the camp, decided to turn to him in the middle of the night in his little pajamas, asking if he could stay with him for tonight.   Now, normally Max never let anybody else to sleep in his bed, ever. Not even his past flings and the girls he used to fuck around with back in his high school days. When the sex was over he usually kicked them out without a question, enjoying his alone time in his room getting high completely naked on his bed that he had to share with no one else.     But this...was completely different and he wasn't sure how he was supposed to react to that. His cabin once belonged to Cameron before he decided to flee from the camp. Max took the main cabin before someone else managed to do it and he specifically made sure to mess it up to the point where you would mistake it to the boys’ college dorm and not the once big and luxurious cabin of Cameron Campbell himself.  There were empty bottles of alcohol on the floor and the sheets were all messed up, due to the bed never being made in the mornings. The strong smell of cigarettes and marijuana was hanging in the air and it could paralyze you on the spot. If the kid was going to sleep here, Max knew that he at least had to clean this place up a little bit for him and seeing that the redhead was still standing there with those big pleading puppy eyes—    Ugh, what the hell.     "Wait here."   Max bluntly warned Davey not to move from his spot, partly because he wasn't in the mood for dealing with the boy if he was going to wander around the camp when he feels like it and also maybe he actually wanted the kid to be here, with him, all alone in this night when no one else could see or hear them.   Maybe this was actually some fucking sign from the skies that he had something precious in his hands now, something that he could take so easily and it won't be even that hard seeing that David was still waiting outside for him and he wants to be with him.     Or maybe he just has to fucking kill himself already like the scum that he is.     He cleaned his bed and tried to smooth the thin sheets and the purple camp blanket he was given when he first got here from last year. Max carefully picked up the bottles, placed them on the side, and threw away all of the garbage on his desk to the trash bin that was in his cabin. He opened the window to let a fresh air enter the suffocating room and take care of the unpleasing smell that was inside. When he was finally pleased with the results, Max opened the door once again and told the waiting boy to get in.     "Alright you can go in but go straight to bed and no cuddling or any of that sappy shit; I don't do any bedtime stories here kid!"   Not really listening to the empty threat of the black-haired counselor, David rushed inside the cabin with glee, a huge smile on his lips as he nearly squealed when he saw he was going to sleep in Max's bed, seeing there's no other bed around. David climbed on it and wasted no time in snuggling closer to the purple thin blanket as if it was the purest thing he had ever clung to in his life.     "Thank you, Max! You’re really the best"     Yeah, the best at being a creep maybe...     The raven stayed silent for a while, seeing the boy laying his bed so peacefully as if he was safe in his little vast world of dreams. David was tangled in his sheets and to anyone else, it would be adorable to see a small child sleeping so innocently. But Max was going absolutely crazy because of that!   This was nothing but a cruel joke on him; his own fucked up desire was laying in his cabin, in his bed, so close him, and he knew he shouldn't but god—he couldn't stop feeling bad for agreeing that this kid wouldn’t be here if he knew that just by seeing David walking around in the camp with no shirt on is enough to drive him crazy. He should've gone to bed already at this hour but Max simply couldn't do it.     Not when his kid was in there.   He could probably ignore the child's presence and pretend he's not there while turning to the edge of the bed but that wouldn't stop his mind from thinking awful, lewd things. Ideas that shouldn't exist yet it didn't stop the blood from rushing to his cock when he would selfishly imagine the redhead turning and snuggling against his body; feel his warm, plump lips press against his skin. Sleeping on the floor was an option that he wasn't going to take and he was already being way too soft with the boy for the past few weeks when they started to hang out together as.... friends.     Goddamnit , are they still considered to be even friends anymore?     He might as well be tolerant the fact that there's a fucking faunlet sleeping in his bed, the first person who he ever shared a bed with. He tries his hardest not to laugh at his own sick joke because he still wanted to believe he had some of his morals with him.   He removed his sweater and tossed it to the floor after he decided to stay in his black pair of jeans. He wasn't going to risk any unwanted friction between him and Davey. Because he didn't want to wake up in the morning just to explain Nikki why he was sleeping naked in the bed with a little camper in it, oh no, fuck this shit, he wasn't risking that.   He tried to keep himself as much as distant as he could from David, who was starting to let out soft snores from his mouth. Max had suspected whether the child had lied to him in order to get himself to sleep in his bed which was a fat chance but Max wasn't exactly the most innocent and pure man out there. Although he tried to tell himself that it was just his sick mind that wouldn't leave him alone, it didn't help to know that he secretly enjoyed those dirty little thoughts.   If he convinced himself hard enough that he only wanted that because of the sinful pleasure it gave him then maybe he will stop with this tiring hatred towards himself but Davey wasn't making it easy on him now that he found out that he has some sort of feelings for him.   But Davey's feelings for him were pure and way too clean to match with his sick, twisted desires for him.   He wanted to turn around and see what kind of face David makes when he's asleep but knowing that he won't be able to control himself. He forced himself to clench to his side of the pillow and close his eyes, hoping he would be able to drift into a dreamless sleep to help him avoid any wet nightmares that will return to haunt him in his sleep.   It took a while, he had to wait for almost an hour until he finally felt like his fatigue was getting the best of him, he felt safe knowing he would get to ignore Davey's light, sweet snores and happy that he couldn't think of anything in his sleep instead of the big black void of nothingness.     The nothingness of his mind.   ***** A bottle of poison to your heart ***** Chapter Summary The funny thing is that he found himself stuck in an endless dilemma with himself. He could keep denying everything as much as he wants for every single day while struggling with his demons and winning to see the next day with him staying the "good guy" or... He could just give in for once and have his fun and forever live with his life knowing he is nothing but a monster. And the second choice seems so damn tempting. Chapter Notes I uh...so umm, i made this thing and now i'm making a new chap for it and i can't stop myself from writing this horrible monstrosity. Please send help to me, i don't want to do this anymore ;-; But as i told you earlier guys, this fic is very dark and i won't recommend you reading it if you find the themes far too disturbing for your taste. Special warning for this chapter: Slight nsfw (very very slight, guys), angsty/sappy shit. See the end of the chapter for more notes -       “I envy people that know love. That has someone who takes them as they are.” ― Jess C. Scott, The Devilin Fey . . . - The next morning Davey was already gone. Max didn't question as to why he woke up this morning and why his bed was empty, he was curled to the edge of the bed when he woke up with the feeling of a dull ache that bloomed on his back from the uncomfortable position. The child that left the cabin might've missed the effect he left in his counselor's room, the bed smelling like Davey.   The scent of the little boy soaked the dirty thin sheets. It was… Intriguing, to say the least. He wasn't aware of how unpleasant and boring his bed always smelled. It always reeked of sweat and alcohol but only now it really started to bother him in a way, wrinkling his nose and glowering. No matter the waves of shame and guilt that rolled in his head, he won't deny the soft sweet pleasure he got from Davey's own body scent. He wondered…   Did the child always smell like that? He was so morbidly fascinated by his own moment of euphoria that he didn't even notice the uncomfortable tightness that formed in his pants, the denim fabric stretched against his aroused erection and he shuddered at the feeling of it twitching in his pants, begging to be set free.   He was weak. He was really weak and selfish like this.   And the little camper was full of love; he was full of youth and innocence that he possessed within him as if it was the most powerful weapon against any scum that tried to challenge him. A scum like Max. Davey was killing him with his kindness, driving him mad with his scent and his presence. He was determined and he was so fucking kind and it helped Max realize—    It helped him realize that he wasn't so fucking heartless after all. When he just about to give up, the boy would be there and remind him how great life could be...even if Max knew that his life is nothing but a mess and pettiness; because the universe felt really good when David was in it.   And it felt nice, Knowing that for once in his life...he won't be feeling so tired anymore with all the rage and hatred inside of him all the time. The sappiness and the sudden spark of the sweet emotion made his cock grow limp in his pants. He likes the little camper but this time it wasn't the feelings of lust that controlled him. He was genuinely admiring the redhead who was so wonderful, so sweet, and how much it made Max want to be a better person. Because he wanted to be better, he really does.   …Because he was just tired of being himself.   ===============================================================================   The taste of the hot coffee was bitter and burned his tongue when he swallowed the dark liquid without hesitation. His cigarettes were still on his nightstand, keeping his little promise that he wouldn't smoke around the kids anymore out of sympathy to them. And he wanted David to be happy and pleased with him. Max was just sitting outside of his cabin watching the rest of the campers playing soccer near their tents. Nikki came to him this morning wearing a pair of glittered, red hot-pants that exposed her athletic legs that were covered with SpongeBob band-aids with little patches of dark bruises hidden beneath them, her pigtails tucked under her baseball hat when she carried around her bat and her ball; suggesting that she wanted him to join her for a round of game. Neil was not far behind her, with a cigarette dangling from his thin, pink lips and his usual dark circles under his eyes.   "I thought you wanted to play with the brats this morning." It wasn't a question, and she wasn't pleased with the tone of his voice. She pouted and furrowed her green eyebrows in displeasure, looking like a pleading puppy with the ridiculous expression. Max thought sadly about all the times she had to pull out that face when she wanted something and had to suck in the bitter rejection from the people who refused her so often. He loved her, he really did. But he wasn't sure if he even deserved her in his life when he couldn't even for once pay attention to her like he should or spend some time with her like a real friend should do. And he knew that she understood him. She knew he wasn't the kind of a man who likes to hang out with other people if it didn't suit his tastes or his mood yet she still tried! Never giving up on him when she would kindly approached him every morning, sparing some time for him when the campers were already done.   "We could do something else if you want? I actually thought we could go together and search for a new mascot! Every camp has a mascot you know?" The sentence pulls out both Max and Neil from their own bubble of thoughts as she said that without thinking. She was desperate for attention and she wasn't willing to step off, even if it meant it would bring her some troubles.   "What happened to the hamster?"   She didn't answer. Instead, she nervously taps the grass beneath her shoes and play with the locks of her pigtails. It earned her a stern gaze from both of the male counselors.   "He’s...well, he isn't with us anymore. Let’s just say that he’s sleeping with the rest of the hamsters in the little hamster heaven! If there is one like this…"   The poor, little fucking hamster.   The cigarette that hanged loosely between Neil's teeth drops to the ground when his eyes widened and his expression turned stormy. "And you didn't even tell us about this? Jesus Christ, when did this happen?"   Nothing ever good came out when Neil started to throw fits of anger in the morning. He was known to be the calm guy between the three of them but it didn't mean that he couldn't be easy to anger when something wasn't going his way. Nikki tenses, her bat, and the ball dropped to the ground, meeting their place with the cigarette.   "Hey, I'm sorry ok? I just wanted the little guy to hang out a little outside his cage, I felt bad for him. I didn't know that the platypus was going to eat him. They don't even eat hamsters!" Max stops listening when Neil starts to yell out a full monologue about the platypus' way of life and their food chain while throwing his hands in the air in distress. He knew it was his cue to leave when things like this started to happen. He felt bad for leaving Nikki like this alone to deal with Neil's fury but in the end, it was her fault for letting Larry out of the cage and not keeping an eye on the little mascot like she should've done and letting him get eaten by a wild animal that apparently had a hunger for hamster meat.   He could still hear Neil's voice echo through the forests as he leaves the area, his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie. He tried his haredest to ignore the guilt in his heart when he left his friends fighting without trying the slightest to stop them.   Max was a really bad friend.   ===============================================================================     The way he found Davey again this morning was simple when he cross the forest and saw the little redhead sitting all alone on a tree log, staring at the little honey bees as if he had nothing else to do in his time. Max found it really funny how it seemed like there was an invisible magnet between the two of them that made them find each other no matter the distance in the camp. But just like he found it adorable that he could easily spot the little camper wherever he was, he also felt bad that he uses this to his advantage; to follow the boy every day and stay with him despite knowing deep down inside him that he shouldn't.   And it's not like Max was some sort of a predator who haunted down his victims knowing exactly where they are...   But he knew that he was still dangerous to the kid. The way he saw how this relationship was going, he either had to stop all contact with the kid and stay away from him as much as possible. Or he keeps on going with it while enduring the shame and the guilt that he felt when they were close to each other; his mind forcing him to think terrible things that involved the camper in it.   He wasn't a bad guy. But then again, how can he be so sure it wasn’t just his guilt that was trying to make him seem as the innocent one in this part?   All these internal questions made him so tired and so damn desperate. When the little kid turns to look at him with those big green eyes that were staring into his hollow soul like he was some special item made his aching heart quiver with a warm sweetness. The way Davey smiled at him was enough for Max to almost melt on the spot.   God, how much he adores the kid.   "What's the matter with you kiddo? Ain't got something better to do?"   The comment was simple, casual even when you think about it. And Davey was one naive child, not seeing the problem with Max although he was doing a wonderful job at hiding away all of the filth that he keeps within his mind and the arousal in his pants that Davey was often the cause of it. The child shakes his head with a soft chuckle that escaped his lips, still wearing that childish grin on his face. Raising one eyebrow Max questions the boy again with a smug smile on his face, although he was genuinely curious.   "What's that supposed to mean?" "It means that I didn't have anything to do here...until you came Max."   His heart almost stopped beating. His breath was heavy and it got caught in his lungs before he exhaled the air again with more shakiness than before. Electricity was running wild in his veins and every drop of blood in his body screamed within his skin.   How come this kid always brings the worst and the best in him? He must have stayed silent for a long time because the next thing he knew, a little hand tugged his sweater and large emerald eyes that looked at him mixed with suspicion and sadness on that round pretty face. He was doing it again, acting like a creep. And he didn't want to pull Davey's hand away because he was already a shaking mess inside and the feeling of the boy's soft skin against him wasn't helping him at all. He tried his hardest to ignore the rapid speed his heart picked up and pulled out a lazy twitchy grin to light up the little tension they had.   "it’s cool kid, I’m still alive." Of course, Davey wasn't really buying it. The kid was too fucking smart for that.   "You were acting a little...off. Is it something I said?" Yes. "Don't be dumb David; I said that I’m fine. Now lay off, will ya?"   He could tell that the boy was taken aback by the tone of his voice and Max couldn't really blame him when he flinches at the harshness in his voice and returns back to the log that he was sitting on before he came. His little head stare down at the grass as if it was more interesting than him but they both knew that he was a little insulted by the comment. And Max felt really bad for it, his heart twisting in painful turns inside his heavy, worthless chest.   "Shit kid, I’m sorry I didn't—” "No no! It’s my fault, really."   That caught the attention of the raven-haired counselor more than he expected. His expression stays blank but his eyes were still locked on Davey who was now looking at him too, eyes still sad and his lower lip trembling. It was kinda adorable if Max had to admit that. "What are you talking about kid?" When David gulps nervously and switched his eyes from Max to the grass again he opens his mouth to say something in a shaky, insecure tone.   "I'm really just a bother to you, aren't I?"   What the actual fuck?   Max was about to protest, hell, it took a lot of effort from him not slap his hands around David's face and ask him what the fuck he was talking about and why was he bringing this up in the damn morning when all he ever wanted was to have a normal conversation with his camper. How he already had the slight mood to not be an ass to him about anything like he usually would do with the rest of the people in this god-forsaken joke of a camp.   "Kid, what the fuck?"   David glared at him.   The promise that Max made him about not cursing in front of him was broken and if Max wasn't so concentrated on how beautiful the green hue around the redhead's eyes looks when he was upset with him, the man would feel slightly disappointed in himself. Then again, he wasn't very fond of the idea of a little kid making feel shittier than he already felt about himself.   But he still felt horrible because of that.   The effect that this child had on him was more than just unbearable and it made him grit his teeth in frustration. He likes the kid so goddamn much but he didn't know this painful desire would bring him so much regret.   "David, I never said you were a bother to me. Where did you even get that idea?"   The kid shrugs while playing with the hem of his shirt, trying to avoid the question as much as he could, trying his hardest to ignore the cyan eyes that eyed him wildly. "I think...From everyone. I can really feel it, you know?" And then the kid gets up from the log and walks all the way to counselor, his hands once again finding their way to hold to the dark haired man’s sweater, gripping on the blue worn out fabric tightly, missing the light skip of a heartbeat in the older man's chest that sped up again with the feeling of the redhead holding him firmly by the hoodie.   "Last night I went to sleep with you because I felt bad." The tension faded away with the sudden urge to hug the boy and comfort him. Max could practically imagine the conflict the kid was having with himself. Davey could be a real open book sometimes when the kid really wanted to and maybe he did want Max to understand him now.   "Yes but you had a nightmare, David. Is that why you think you're a bother to me?" A slow nod was his answer. David wasn't even looking at him in the eyes but the man couldn't mistake the round shape of tears that begun to collect in the corners of Davey's eyes that soon become watery and red.   "I left you in the middle without telling you anything, without thanking you for your kindness Max, I’m so sorry! I’m really—”   Max places a finger on the kid's lips to stop him from continuing further with the babbling before the kid would embarrass himself and burst into tears in front of him. He tries his hardest not to think about the wonderful feeling of Davey's soft plump lips press against his skin and how his brain was running wild again with his sick imagination.   "Calm down buddy, stop with the waterworks, alright?"   Even if he likes the sound the kid makes when he cries it's never fun to see a kid crying over something so dumb and stupid. The red-haired child did as he was told but his watery eyes never left Max's when he pulled his face away from the warm finger that was still on his lips. He hesitantly takes his counselor's hand and holds it in between his tiny little fingers, the faint red blush returned to his cheeks once again as it colored the boy's pale face with a red gorgeous hue of crimson.   "You're just...so kind to me, Max, I really like you."   I really like you.   Max was nothing but a pathetic and worthless hollow shell of a person. He was too weak and selfish for this horrible world, too fucking dangerous to the purest and the kindest people who lived there and had tried to help him in his life. He was a fucking despicable and disgusting asshole who didn't deserve any fucking kindness or compassion for the shit that he has done and the kid was just so—   So fucking kind. So damn loving...the kid was so full of mercy and sweetness that Max truly felt like he didn't deserve him or his affections that he didn't fucking need or wanted.   He was so fucking special.   And Max just wasn't.   So when the sudden horrible urge to hug the boy tightly against him and even kiss him, to tell him that he was wrong bubbled inside of him and banged against his fragile, broken head to do it. He refused to. He simply couldn't give in to his fucked up emotional mess, couldn’t take advantage of the kid who loves him so much when in reality he really shouldn't because Max was so fucking gross and terrible. So fucking sick in the head and worth for nothing...but he didn't even budge. His fingers still felt the child's soft lips on it and it burned him with a crazy desire that pumped the blood beneath his skin and rushed back to his cock, feeling so much disgust that it almost made him choke and vomit on the ground. But he wasn't heartless and he wasn't cruel enough to let the kid feel bad because of him, so he lifted one shaky arm and stroked the soft locks of the red hair that belonged to Davey with the saddest smile he could bring on his face. It was forced but Max just couldn't help it when he just hated himself so much at this point.   "I know you do kid and I like you too."   He did.   He did.   But he wished he didn't... The boy stops crying, the blush never leaving his face or the stupid grin on his lips when he looks at him with sweet adoration in his eyes that it made Max feel a thousand tentacles in the pit of his stomach that burned him with nausea and shame. "I sort of lied when I said I had a bad dream, Max. I just really wanted to be with you that night. I liked you so much that I felt like it might hurt me if I won't be close to you again and well...I wasn't expecting you to agree with me sleeping in your bed. Gee Max, I hope you aren't mad at me for that."   How fucking precious can this kid get?   He was really tempted to ruffle Davey's head and plant a little kiss on his head to help him realize that things were ok but he didn't do that. He knew that both he and David were at fault for their feelings that night and while the boy was just having a heavy crush on him, Max just wanted so much more than just be around the kid; his desires and intentions were too sick to comprehend with.   "Nah kid its cool, I kinda felt like you were being a little sketchy with me that night. Besides you're probably the only brat in this camp that I will actually allow to sleep in my bed, so consider that as a compliment alright?"   It wasn't supposed to be a compliment but it made Davey's heart flutter in his chest and he hesitantly winks at his counselor, probably not thinking of the implication of exposing his feelings towards the older man. He was so clueless and so terribly naive.   "Does it mean I can sleep in your bed again tonight?"   No, absolutely not. He had enough of that shit last night where he had to sleep with an aching boner stuck to his jeans and the most uncomfortable sleeping position he ever had to choose. It doesn't matter if he wanted the kid so fucking badly; it wasn't worth the same crap he's going to get again if he agrees.   "Sure buddy, if that's what you want then be my guest."   Oh, Max hated himself so much.   Before he knew it they were both walking away from the forest together, Davey skipping after Max to match the speed of his counselor and Max secretly wondering if the kid was too nervous to ask him if they could hold hands together. It could be possible, he was already found to be correct when he accused the boy sleeping with him because of ulterior motives and he was right. But even if the kid did want to hold his hand, there was no way in hell that he would make a move on the boy, even if the child would beg him to do it with his pretty words and pleading eyes that he learned to use so well against him.   Learned to use so good that he could—could use it for...   No Max STOP!   The uncomfortable sensation in his belly didn't fade away. He suspected it was because he skipped breakfast again because he didn't want to stay and eat with the rest of the campers but he was almost certain he'll manage to find a way to silence the cruel rumbling in his stomach as soon as they reach back to the camp. Looking back at the trees they had just passed, a little sense of worry enters his mind when he looks back at the kid who was far too oblivious to notice his gaze at him.   "Say, kid, did you see any platypus around here?"   Davey looks at him with awe and curiosity in his bright eyes; clearly, he didn't understand what the counselor was even asking him.   "I'm not sure if I even know what that means Maxwell."   Max chuckles, his voice hoarse and weak at the comment of the dense redhead. Without giving it much thought he ruffles David's hair childishly and gave him a playful wink.   "Never change Davey, never change." ===============================================================================     A few kids were walking around the hall of the cafeteria, blowing raspberries at whoever passed them while they held on to the containers of pudding that they probably stole when the quartermaster, who was probably on his break drinking rat poison from a bottle again. Max was almost tempted to ask the kids where were the other co-counselors and who the hell gave them the permission to steal the food from the cafeteria but he wasn't going to risk getting prank by a bunch of bratty campers who would probably try to make fun of him even though he would not give a fuck about that.   Where is the hell Nikki and Neil anyway?   He could easily let Davey go and let him get back to his own tent; the kid was looking at him as if he was waiting for the answer to come from his own mouth. The kid didn't want to go because he didn't want to disappoint Max.   And Max didn't want the kid to leave because—   Because why? Go ahead Maxie, say it.   "Where is everybody?" The kid snapped him from his trance and he looks back at the boy with sympathy in his eyes.   "Probably out there fucking or something, how should I know kid? I was with you the whole time." The redhead's eyebrows furrowed again when he fixed an angry stare at the counselor.   He messed up again, didn't he? "Ok, but can you like...stop cursing, please? You said you wouldn't do it anymore and now you're doing it again"   Can he really stop though?   Can this kid really blame him for that?   He was such a fucking asshole who could never keep his promises no matter who asks him to and this kid was just...expecting so much of him and it almost broke his hollow heart; almost.   "I wasn't cursing buddy, I really have no idea where your dumb little counselors at. Besides you never know when they might actually start to—” "Oh gosh please stop! I've had enough!"   How cute. This kid who couldn't even think about sex jokes, making such a bashful expression right now as his hands covered his red face, his lips pressed as if he just ate an entire lemon. He was really innocent and so damn naive that he couldn't even think about anything too lewd without flinching at the subject and squealing with a cringe on his face.   So fucking pure and innocent...   "I think I should go back to my tent, Max. If Nikki and Neil aren't here it means I still have free time to myself. I still need to see Jasper today; he promised me that he will show me his pog collection this morning and I sort of forgot about it. Is it ok if I leave?"   Of course, he can. Max should've known better when he thought that just because the kid has a fucking crush on him, doesn’t mean that he doesn't want to hang around with the other campers as well. After all, a crush is a crush but personal life still exists too. He didn't have a crush on the boy but he still wanted him, he desired him. And unlike any other normal person, this insane obsession was eating him alive as he couldn't do anything to tame himself and just suffer in silence whenever he would stay with Davey even for just a couple of minutes.   He was really sick.   He was so damn sick and oh so weak and selfish...   But he let him go. With a simple wave of his hand, he watched with a horrible ache in his heart as the boy grins at him and runs towards the tents. He still liked Max, he will still like him at the evening where he will come to his bed again to sleep with him because he likes him so much and it hurt him to stay away from his counselor. He still liked him, he still wanted him. And Max wanted him too.   But he wished he didn't .   ===============================================================================     He still didn't hear anything from Nikki or Neil even as the sun was already setting down and he had to take the fucking responsibility for taking care of the noisy, impatient campers that were starting to throw temper tantrums for the lack of activities they had for the day. It took one single to threat to shut them all up when he said that he might call Nikki for a game that she longed to play with them that involved searching in the forest for any bears or wolves that she always wanted to find. That of course, brought fear on their faces and they quietly returned back to their tents without saying any word to Max, who smugly eyed them as they were going back inside their tents. The rest of the time he had, he spent it on cleaning the remaining trash in his cabin; disposing of unnecessary garbage that he left in his room when he woke this morning. This time his cabin didn't smell as bad as it had yesterday when he still kept the window on and threw the empty bottles away. But he still felt like it might need a little bit more of a clean-up before the kid gets back to him.   There was a little voice in the back of his head that warned him about the possibilities that this kid might ditch him before the night comes or that he should stop and refuse in letting him sleep with him again. But once again, he was a man who likes to take deadly risks in his life even if it meant sucking in his lust and letting the kid sleep in his bed for the night. He might as well enjoy it if it meant that the camper would be happy to be around him for a little while. And after all, he did want the boy to be happy. He was terrible and was a fucking scum to him but it still didn't make him less empathic towards David.   He just wished that he could be normal for once around him, if not for the others as well...   Later that night, when he was crashed on his bed while listening to the camp's radio, the kid was already there in his pajamas, waiting for Max to invite him in. It was safe to say that just like last time the kid was very anxious around Max, still holding onto the fabric of his pajamas as he slowly steeped in the cabin, hesitating at first before entering the place, looking around to see that it looks much better than the last time he checked.   To say the least, Max felt proud to make his room look clean and livable.   "Alright kid if you wanna sleep, better do it now. I'm gonna stay awake for a while now."   That caught the attention of the boy and he slowly nodded, understanding that he was going to fall asleep earlier than his counselor just like last time. A naughty twinkle danced between the gorgeous hues of Davey's eyes. The kid wanted something from the man but Max, who was too much of a coward, wasn't going to ask him what.   It's funny that when you suddenly become the bad guy you want to be so careful about everything.   So careful, so very careful indeed...   They were soon lying on the bed again, this time Max was smart enough to put on his shorts before David reached his cabin. Normally he enjoys sleeping naked but seeing that he was going have some company with him, he pulled out a pair of worn out shorts that he kept in the camp's closet and decided to use that as an alternative sleepwear, because fuck this—he was not going to sleep in his jeans again, hell no. He didn't take too much space to leave the boy in an uncomfortable position to sleep in, curled up to the wall and facing it, the soft sounds of his breathing much more relaxed than what Max thought it to be. Before he knew it, the child turns to the other side and wraps his legs and arms around him.   He was close to him; he was way too close to him!   "Kid what the fu—”   He only receives light snores from the redhead as a response, the kid asleep on top of him while tangling his limbs against his body, snuggling closer to his chest and repeating soft mumbles into his neck as his head rested against the hollow of his neck. The pounding in his head got louder with the realization of what just happened. This kid literally ignored his warning against cuddling in his bed and decided to do it anyway. His hands were trembling when he tried to push the kid away from him when he feels the blood starts rushing again through his body. But then the kid started to groan in his sleep, his cheek nuzzled closer to his throbbing neck that was warm with the blood that was running so fast right now; his body feeling like he was burning. Max was weak. He was disgusted with himself as he lays there motionless, paralyzed as Davey thrashed against him in a way that felt so wrong, but oh so pleasurable because if he grinded his hips against him so slightly as the kid writhed against him, he could feel the plump softness of the child's body grinding against his cock. He could feel the hot rush of blood concentrated rather lewdly on his pelvis by his own sinful arousal. The room was starting to grow loud with his heavy breathing and he was weak, so weak, so disgusting and unworthy. Then a little noise escaped David's lips and he forced himself to stop.   God, why?   The erection in his shorts was still sticking to the child's ass, throbbing and twitching at the feeling of the softness being wrapped so close to it. If he didn't stop and if the child continued on trashing in his embrace while clinging to him, Max was sure without a doubt that he would cum. The horrible voice inside his head was burst out laughing at the situation he got himself into. The other part of his brain was screaming at his betrayal.   He was a—   Fucked up human trash; a disgusting pedophile, and nothing but a scum.   −bad guy.   When the camper calmed down from his earlier movements and released his grip on Max, did the counselor slowly pick him and place him on the mattress, covering him with the purple blanket. When he was convinced that no one saw or heard him, he grabbed a full bottle of whiskey in the cabinet of his cabin and opened the door to meet with the chilly night outside.   And just like a coward...   He ran. Chapter End Notes It's a little sappy and angsty and i hate it. I think that my main purpose here is that i want a fic that would focus on the relationship between Davey and Adult Max that won't be so based about cruel underage noncon or one-sided crush from a little boy. Maybe i just wanted to write a fic about adult Max who will also develop feelings for Davey, sick and twisted but still feelings and won't try to use the boy just for sex. End Notes I-is it too late t-to die for me yet...? Please drop_by_the_archive_and_comment to let the author know if you enjoyed their work!
