Wash your mouth out with soap!” Lily ran her sweating hands over her flushed face, leaned in closer to her friend to hear him better in the crowed pub. The two teenagers were huddled in a corner of the Sloppy Broom on one of the busiest nights of the week. The seventh years were allowed to go out during the weeks, but it was considered reckless and many stayed at the school, in favor of passing their NEWTS. Remus smirked, his brown eyes flashed gold in playfulness. “ Lily, please tell me you don't find the bloke at least somewhat attractive!?” Lily let out a sigh, her bright, green eyes cast downward in guilt. Lily Evans, Remus' best friend was the only one that could guile Remus into going out during the week. No matter how much James and Sirius pressured him, to them, he could always easily say no. However, tonight, Lily and Remus sat in the crowed teenage and young adult mischief paradise with one thing on their mind-- one Severus Snape. “I actually feel sorry for him, Rem. I mean... he tries so hard to stay invisible--” Remus scoffed. “That is because James- His Highness- Potter attempts to publicly embarrass him at every turn. I find myself ashamed to be his friend when he does that.” This wasn't quite true, however, as of late. Remus was chagrined to remind himself, that James had actually backed off, recently. Ever since the "Whomping Willow" incident, as it had been coined by the Marauders in the months following. No one had in fact dared to even pay notice to Snape, lest Remus skin them, or Dumbledore do worse. Remus sighed as he reached for his pint, finding it heavy in his hand, such as the thoughts in his mind. Severus and Remus had become acquaintances during Remus' attempt to smooth over the damage done by Sirius in the Whomping Willow incident the year before. He was actually shocked when Severus didn't blow him off. He found the boy had a sense of loneliness about him, and he was desperate enough to appease Remus' approaches for a while at least. Lily took a smooth sip of her sweet cider. “I feel sorrier for James." She said, starting in on her favorite, least favorite topic of the boy she loved to hate. "He is a right sod! To think he wishes to court--” She was interrupted by Remus' hand as it covered her mouth. “Sh! They're coming!” Sirius Black's hearty laugh at something James had said was clearly heard, even in the loud atmosphere of Maurader's night at the pub. Girls were giggling and clamouring to talk to the boys. And it became obvious that some of the third year boys chatting in the corner had been at the pub to "hang" with the cool duo, plus Pettigrew, who'd run off to the loo. "Yep," Lily thought as she noticed one of the thrid years flip his hair obnoxiously in an unmistakable attempt to mimic Sirius Black- Second Marauder Extrordinare or, as Lily rather liked Moron number two. Lily did her best to look in the other direction of the young men approaching her table. She grabbed Remus' hand for support. He winked at her in return. “Moony!” Sirius called. Remus cut his golden eyes at the boastful familiarity Sirius greeted him with. Less often as of late. Remus liked the new terms of their agreement. Afterall, it meant less Black more Snape. “I didn't realize you'd shown up!” “I-I was dragged out by this one.” Remus said to Sirius as he held up Lily's hand to gesture in evidence of his companion, who's face was focused carefully on the pictures lining the pub wall. Seeing this, James' eyes narrowed in suspicion at his companion and their joined hands. And, Sirius sensing his irritation, was quick to interject the ill-advised interjection from his best- friend. “There's plenty of room at the main table! It is our night after all!” He jestered forward and Remus stood uneasily to grab his reluctant redhead in tow. James sought an open opportunity to move in as Lily stood from the booth. “Red! I hope that you can join us!” Lily tried a smile, she hated that nickname. But, unfortunately her smile turned into grimace as James wrapped an arm around her waist. “You and Remus never come out!” James leaned into her ear as he whispered, “I have a seat for you beside me...” Remus, instantly regretting his need to escape the castle for the night, interrupted what was about to turn into James'-Persistent-Attempt-To-Woo-Lily Night, which was coupled always with her persistent, scathing replies. “I have to be getting back, I only came for one drink. Lily and I needed to catch up, you see...” Remus ran a nervous hand through his longish brown hair and bit his bottom lip softly. “Lily are you coming?” James' eyes narrowed once more as Lily nodded, while looking away with her arms crossed, her foot tapping impatiently. Usually, James would have prodded Remus with a teasing joke, reminding him of his need to get back to his lovely textbooks, or gaze longingly at the moonlight. But, those days were gone. And they all had Black and Snape to blame. Though, Remus usually spent nights awake blaming himself, and wishing he'd been the one to tell Severus that he- “Remus, can I talk to you for a second?” James moved swiftly over to the main corridor of the pub, where a couple of younger students were playing chess at the table lining the widows. “Sure,” Remus said as he looked to Lily, who had confusion in her bright green eyes. “Lils, can you wait outside, I'll be right there.” Lily bade Sirius a curt goodbye and left through the small doorway of the pub.   As she stepped outside into the street, she became aware of two things-- how cold it was, and that she was not alone. “Evans?” a familiar voice asserted itself from the alley by the pub. Lily turned to see the thin waif character of a dark-haired boy, known as Severus Snape. “Hello Severus,” she said kindly. Severus moved forward, a half smile forming on his lips. Severus Snape, though he'd surely lost a great deal of weight over the Winter Hols, looked much taller than Lily remembered. Her old neighbor could almost past for a full-on adult, if he hadn't looked so pale and narrow. His eyes, ever dark, seemed to soften when they looked down at her. There was a glimmer of hesitancy about him, that told her he would not take a step forward. Instead, he hung an arms length away. “Why aren't we the last people we'd expect each other to see on a “Marauder's Night?" Finally given into Potter's intent to court you?” Lily smirked. Severus' voice still held the hint of thick syrup smooth, though It had deepened over the summer. “Not a chance," she remarked, eyebrow raised. "Finally given in to Remus' intent court you?” Severus' smile grew, and Lily saw a glimmer of teeth. “Wouldn't you like to know,” he droned. The two teens chuckled at each other's antics. But, Lily was growing slightly pensive. Where was Remus? What could be taking so long? Severus picked up on his old friend's nervousness, but came to the wrong conclusion. “I haven't been avoiding you on purpose. That fight we had...” Lily recovered from being caught slightly off guard by Severus' comment. “No! It's not that! I mean-- it was a nasty row, and I've been meaning to talk to you about that... but, it's just that R-Remus hasn't come out from talking to James yet. I'm slightly worried.” Severus guarded his expression at the mention of Potter and Remus talking. “Are they fighting?” He asked, with a neutral tone masking his voice. Lily collapsed against the brick outside wall of the pub. She shivered at the coldness of the passing gust of wind. “No... well I guess. It's all my fault really. He was holding my hand, and I guess James saw--” “He was holding your hand?!” Severus interrupted with a tone that had shown her he'd lost his calm facade. Lily shockingly looked up to see dark eyes ablaze.“Wha-” Lily realized, then that she hadn't fully explained. She tightened her coat in the the cold February air. “He was trying to be supportive, Severus. We were having a calm chat together. We weren't even there for Moron's Night!" Severus chuckled lightly at her use of their nickname they'd decided on two years ago. "Remus has been all kinds of distracted about you lately...” Severus' smile faded into shock. “Me?!” Severus was in complete disbelief. He didn't expect Remus to acknowledge his existence after all that had happened since the Shrieking Shack incident. Yeah, Remus was making an effort to be kinder-- holding meaningless conversation with him, making a point to greet him at suppers... but Severus always thought it was because he felt bad for him. He didn't think it deserved anymore thought. Lily caught his reaction and only smiled. “Yes you,” she said. “Lily?” The subject of the conversation was coming out of the pub looking a bit worse for wear. Remus' face became nervous at the sight of Severus. As a sign of his discomfort, he brushed a hand through his hair, black eyes were intensely watching, as the werewolf's fingers treaded through his hair.   A distraught Lily walked swiftly over to Remus, as swiftly as her snow boots could carry, anyway. “Rem! Is everything ok?! What did James--” Remus held up a hand. “Yeah Lilis. I just explained that we aren't going steady! He's just being an idiot, he says that I'm picking sides with this whole thing... Hi Severus. What are you doing here?” Remus' attentive eyes focused on Severus. But Severus found he was uncertain of what to say. He only stared. Remus and Lily exchanged concerned stares, as Severus finally found his voice. “Just bored... I was headed back... to school, so...goodbye.” Severus turned swiftly, robes swirling in the wind, without waiting for a reply, and left.   Lily was the first to recover. “What the fuck?” Her green eyes burned, as she squinted against the cold wind. Bright red strains of long thick hair wipped about her as she stared off in the direction of her wayward schoolmate. “He still hates me,” Remus answered, self disapproval heavy in his voice. Lily turned on him incredulously. Remus thought she looked rather scary, red hair whipping about, fierce green eyes sharpened, mad or raving... “What?!" She exclaimed. "No he doesn't! He's just being weird... I thought you two were going to talk things out. The way you act, and the way he talks... it's like neither of you have a clue!" Remus sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair. Bitting his lip in thought, he fought over what to tell Lily. Should he tell her that he was fascinated with the way it seemed he could scare the pants off of Snape just by looking at him? No,... that he was fascinated at with Snape at all would stop her mind right in it's tracks. Lily Evans was ever so unhealthily interested in his sex life. “Yeah, that...” Remus decided to go with the decidedly indirect approach. “...talking never works...case and point tonight with James.” Remus looked down at his feet, his hands stuffed in his coat pocket as he attempted to warm them. Understandingly, Lily placed a hand on his shoulder. Remus was so sure he couldn't fix his and Snape's,... friendship? No, that wasn't it,... it was more like a mutual understanding that the two teenage boys seemed to have. Understanding, and if Lily had to take a guess, fancying the pants off each other was just the icing on the cake. It was really too bad, as well. She thought that both had such potential in bed, and were the only ones she'd set her sights on. Not one James Potter. Not not in a million years...life was so unfair... “Rem,... James is an idiot." She grinned at Remus as he quirked a similar grin. "You're so brilliant! Why you picked such stupid friends, I'll never know!” Lily placed a hand on both of Remus' shoulders and mockingly glared into his chuckling face. Remus laughed and lifted his warmed hands to her wind flushed face. Teasingly, he said, “No...I picked you. They just followed us around because you were pretty.” Lily batted her emerald eyes playfully. “And, you are pretty awesome.” He winked at Lily. She redden, and quickly, without another thought, pulled him in for a kiss. And, it was then that Lily noticed two things-- how warm Remus' lips were in the cold night air, and that they were not alone. “What the fuck?!” The two broke apart, and turned, startled, to see an angry James who stood in the pub doorway...   Please Review!!
