Notes See the end of the work for notes ***** Another Tuseday ***** "God I hate him", she thought as she stirred and the blank Hospital walls. "Fell down the stairs, my ass!!! What is this the seventh time she "fell" down the stairs!?!?!" she thought as she laid her damp forehead against the cool wall to the left of her. She glared at the happy clown picture on the adjoining wall. "Who the hell puts a scary ass clown in a hospital emergency room?" She muttered quietly to her self as a chill ran up her spine. The movement jostles the sleeping bundle in her arms. "Oh; it's okay honey" she cooed softly to the squirming baby in her arms. "Dots very sorry she woke you up," she said as the baby began to fuss in earnest. "go to sleep little babe; go to sleep little babe; your momma's gone away and your daddy's gonna stay; didn't leave nobody but the baby; go to sleep little baby." She sang softly to the now asleep child. She marveled at him, so beautiful, so smart, so.........perfect she mused silently to her self. "Yun." Snapping to attention as her name was called. "Eonni," she answered, emotionless as she looked at her sister. Bruises painted the entirety of her body. Scars and scabs adored the bruises as if they were some sort of gruesome decorations. Her muddy soul reflected in the hollow mirrors of her eyes. She was hunched over, like a caged animal whose seen the horror of the slaughterhouse. Yun looked down at the baby again, fast asleep in her arms. "How is it?" Her sister asked. "HE is fine," she answered curtly "sleeping away like he needs." She sighed, lightly stroking his brows. Yun looked up to see a flash of something in her sister's eyes, an emotion gone far too quickly for Yun to comprehend it. Her eyes were now cast down towards her bony hands. " I thought you were going to leave him," Yun said softly, concern bleeding through her tone. Her sister concentrated on the sheets, not saying a word. This is an old argument Yun thought quietly to her self. Long ago this was an argument of screams and anger, now only silence reverberates off the walls. Yun never wanted to feel this way towards her sister, but Indifference sneaks in subtly. She wants to laugh hysterically at the irony of this situation. "I've studied abusive relationships my entire life, beginning with my own parents, but I never thought the Eonni would succumb to the same faults," she thought quietly. Her sister laid back down and stared at the white walls, trying desperately to look at something other than the pair. Yun frowned, looking at her sister's mangled body was uncomfortable. She looked down and pressed herself gently against the baby's forehead and whispers lovingly, "At least I have you, little Sangwoo". ***** Telling Truths ***** Chapter Notes Woot woot i got another one on yay me lol. So college has ruined me so my sources for the statistics are in MLA format at the end of notes I'm so sorry See the end of the chapter for more notes Approximately thirty-three percent of children will be abused by the time they reach age 18.” Although the sentence was spoken softly, the room became eerily quiet. She gripped the podium tightly as she continued reading out loud what was on the page. “90 percent of victims know their abuser, and 78.1 percent of the perpetrators are the child's own parents.” Yun looks up from her page, seeing a mix of disgust and sympathy on their faces. “And 30 percent of abused children grow up to abuse or allow their own children to be maltreated.” she took a deep breath to steel herself and began to speak again. “My sister and I were subject to systematic abuse by our biological father. Our parents wed when they found out that they were pregnant with my elder sister. They were so happy until he began to work as a police officer. That job changed him. Instead of coming home happy to a loving wife and daughters, he came home tired and stressed. He started looking for a way to escape, and then he found alcohol. The beer made him forget the horrors of what he had seen that day, but it also made him violent and angry. The abuse started little, first it was shoving, then hitting, and finally, he found tools to help his wife and daughters hurt. This drinking affected his job, and eventually, he was taken off the force and confined to a desk and papers. He began coming home drunk, and then not until the next day.” Yun quietly flipped to the next page in her notes and began again “The sexual abuse began for us when I was ten.” The admission feels like nothing to Yun, merely a fact, and facts cannot be changed. "The abuse for all of us continued over the years, although in much less violent ways for my stepmother and sister. I understood that I was their scapegoat, with me he was less violent and had an outlet for his pent up emotions. Nothing would change this so I accepted it as truth. Our father passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver when I was 14, and my stepmother when will him two months after. My sister, being 20 at the time, found a job and supported us while I went to school. I graduated early in order to find a good-paying job help her with money. I was scouted for an elite College in the United States by the time I was 16, and with her support, I left to find a better life for both of us. It was during this time she met a man and fell in love soon after they had a child, and then beatings begin again. I returned from college and found her to be a different person, with a man who was a beast violent and angry, and the only person I have ever truly loved in my life, her son Sangwoo.” Yun smiled wistfully. “ I tell you our life story today not because I want you to feel sympathy for my client and me, but because I want you to understand that the systematic abuse she had suffered her for her entire life is the only reason this woman was not able to protect her son and herself. She was terrified and not strong enough to fend him off so she submitted trying and make the sure things would be better for her son. But when I witnessed the abuse first have as responsible citizen chose to involve the court and to save this family." Yun Turned to the other people in the courtroom, "Honor judge members of the jury I beg you see this man for what he truly is nothing more than an angry man who raised his fists to his loving wife and child. Please protect these people who cannot protect themselves, and stop this cycle of abuse. I thank the judge and jury for the time and know you will make the right decision.” With that show of emotional grandiose, she sat back down at the desk appointed for the Prosecutor and locked eyes with the defendant. The father of her nephew looked good in orange prison jump suit. She smirked to herself and waited for the opposition to make their move. "I have a licence to practice law in 10 countries and have not lost a single case in the five years I have been a prosecutor, this will be no difference" she promised herself. Chapter End Notes So i ran the chapter through gramarly but of you find any grammatical errors you can always let me know, whether or not I get around to fixing them who can say LOL. I'm having surgery tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to finished another chapter within the next couple days. Feel free to leave comments questions whatever. What age do you think Sangwoo should be during this? I'm thinking around 1 maybe 2 but I'm not sure All national child abuse statistics cited from U.S. Administration for Children & Families, Child Maltreatment 2015. https:// www.acf.hhs.gov/cb/resource/child-maltreatment-2015 National Children’s Alliance 2015 national statistics collected from Children’s Advocacy Center members and available on the NCA website: http://www.nationalchildrensalliance.org/cac-statistics ***** Using Lies ***** Chapter Summary Sorry for the late update this chapter took for EVER to write :( By the time the guilty verdict was rendered, no one was surprised. It took a jury of 12 thirty minutes to convict the defendant and sentence him to 10 years in prison without chance of parole, on account of his previous record of Aggravated assault and Assault with a deadly weapon when the police tried to apprehend him. Everyone in the courtroom knew he was guilty, even his attorney who begged for weeks for a plea deal. Yun was almost tempted to accept if only to get the sniveling man to shut up, but the satisfaction of knowing that Sanqwoo’s father would receive the best hospitality that state prison had to offer kept Yun from accepting. With his fate now decided, the court moved on to the custody of sangwoo himself. “This will to go perfectly” she promised herself as The Jury slowly filled out, adoption and custody cases are decided by the judge. Normally a lawyer who represented the prosecution would never be allowed to be a candidate for the child but with Sangwoos mother in a psychiatric hospital for violent bouts of paranoia and his father going to jail for abuse of him and his mother, the next of kin left only Yun. Not that she minded, she loved sangwoo so much it hurt sometimes. She never thought she could love, and definitely to the extent that she loved that little boy. His eyes are like the sea during a storm, all gray and blue hues. When he smiles Yun can see subtle hints of darker colors, waiting beneath the sea. “And I will not lose him,” she thought fiercely. She began assessing everyone in the room. Their importance, their opinions, and possibilities of them standing in her way. Judge Jin Soo was no threat, he tried to pick her up in the Red Light District last year while she was doing some undercover research. Yun's had him by the balls ever since. Next was the case manager, Mi Na. She is a nice enough woman, late 50’s no children and way past her prime so she advocates for children in the adoption courts. She's a stickler for the rules and might be a problem later. Thankfully her boss and co-representative is a man Yun is very familiar with. Hyeon meaning person of virtue, what a load a shit she thought with a grin on her face. He was accused five years ago of using donations on personal items, one of which was an 18-year-old prostitute, “I was the one to get him off Scot free and he owes me everything and I intend to collect this time” As a lawyer you don't have the luxury of choosing between right and wrong, you are only there to win. Morals are great in theory, but as a lawyer morals tend to get in the way. ***** Yelling Lies ***** Chapter Summary Woot Woot finally some action!! I am so sorry it's taken SO FREAKING LONG to get here. But I see the horizon. The longer more interesting horizon lol. “This is it, this is what's going to kill me!!!” Yun though bitterly. She glances down at the burgundy watch on her left wrist and groans as it reads 4: 45 pm, “Mi Na has been talking for fifty-five minutes” she groans into her hands. She can feel a migraine pushing its way behind her eyes. This is ridiculous she thinks, this little “speech” holds no relevance to this case and she has yet to even say Sangwoo’s name. She looks around to find the others in no better shape than she. She giggles, Judge Jin Soo has dozed off and Mi Na hasn't even noticed. Myung her assistant gently placed a cup of coffee on the table for her, she smiles and nods her head in thanks. Myung was a nice young girl with short dark hair and even darker eyes, she was relatively attractive, which will only help her career. Yun cradles the cup gratefully and almost purrs in contentment as she drinks. She leaned back in her chair and discreetly whispers “Twenty dollars says that there will be drool on the court order.” Myung knits her eyebrows in confusion, and Yun nods her head towards the now asleep judge. Myung's eyes widened and her mouth formed a small “o” as understanding crossed her features. “Someone once told me to never take a bet unless I can win, so I, unfortunately, decline your bet,” Myung said giggling. Yun smiled as she looks back at the proceedings, Heyon is desperately trying to get some sort of information on the record and is sorely losing the battle. Yun loudly cleared her throat, causing the napping Judge to almost fall off his chair, and begin speaking " Your honor, as much as I'm sure we would all love to hear Ms. Mi Na continue to spill useless information out of her mouth, unfortunately, this is a legal court charged with deciding what will happen to this poor child." She looked over in time to see Mi Na's face turn into a swirl of red rage, it looks hilarious but Yun cannot afford to show that type of emotion now. She waits for judge Jin Soo's nod and begins her case. "Your honor, the law is clear in cases of abuse and neglect the child will go to the other parent, and if that parent is unfit as well, then the child will go to the next of kin. Your honor, I am the last kin that Sangwoo has. I am more than financially stable, I have an impeccable legal record, and am fully qualified to take cair of my beloved nephew." she said with a smile. Mi Na scoffed and said " Your honor there are reasons we have laws, and they keep all of us safe. The attorney who put his father away adopting him can only be confusing to the child. What if we did this for every abuse case?!?! This cannot be good for anyone especially the child!!" she finished the statement almost yelling, her face red and puffy. "I made this personal; oopsie," Yun thought to herself giggling a little. "Judge Jin Soo, I believe my college is letting her personal beliefs get in the way of what it truly the best option for Sangwoo. He is a child who has had everything he knew ripped away from him in such a short period of time. He needs stability and something familiar to help him through this tough transition. I understand this is a unique situation and it would not work in every case, but this is a unique child. Choosing anything else would be a disservice to him and not what he needs to be a happy and healthy child." "Oh please" Mi Na began "this is an obviously blatant misuse of power and I will not stand for it!! and Furthermore-" "If I may be permitted to speak!" Hyeon loud voice boomed through the courtroom. "As a completely neutral third party, I believe Sangwoo could not be placed in better hands. As a representative of the Children's Protection Bureau we have always strived to place the child first with fitting family, and here we have a family member who the child is already familiar with and loves. Instead of preventing a child from being adopted into an amazing home because of some small triviality. There are millions of children every day being abandoned or being placed in an abusive house why don't we allow both Sangwoo and Yun to be happy" His eyes bore into Yun's looking for some sort of approval, like an eager puppy, she smiled and made a slight incline of her head to signal he did well. They all turned towards Judge Jin Soo to see him looking in deep thought. The room was silent, no one wanted to disturb him less they prove the other right. Yun practically held her breath, plans, unfortunately, go awry, and if he did not agree with her, Yun needed a pan B. Kidnapping is not the best course of action but she will not lose him. "I have always been a very selfish woman," she thought ironically "as though love could ever be selfish." Judge Jun Soo took off his glasses and sighed "this case is at its core not about the laws," he said slowly, "it's about a child who is afraid and alone who is in desperate need of love and stability, I believe Yun can provide that" he said pinning down Mi Na with his glare. That said I am appointing Yun Sangwoo's legal garden and awarding her full custody. If and when his mother and father have fully rehabilitated themselves the decision of returning custody to his parents up to Yun. Case dismissed" he said signing the custody paper in front of him and banging the gavel twice. Yun smiled triumphantly, and said, "Thank you, your Honor." End Notes this is my first Killing Staking fan fic. this idea has been in my head for a while and I am finally writing it (yay me).
