But if you do, then go ahead and read on! :D See the end of the work for more notes ***** Rule #1: do not engage or initiate contact with the creatures ***** “Yuu! What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Yoichi yelled at his best friend who was currently crouched on the ledge of a window sill of their classroom, preparing to jump. Yuu turned his head around at the source of the noise and sighed in annoyance when he spotted Yoichi, glaring at him as if he’d done something horribly wrong. Well, he was about to if his best friend just didn’t interrupt his escapade. “Just thought of leaving school early.” He replied nonchalantly, not removing his position from the window. Yoichi snorted. “Yeah right, and you thought of doing that by jumping off a three-story building? I don’t think so.” “I can manage.” His airy comment made Yoichi scowl. “What about the math test this afternoon? You know it’s going to affect your grades.” The raven-haired teen rolled his eyes and gave his best friend an ‘are-you- kidding-me’ look. Yuu could fail all his subjects if he wanted to and the school would still pass him for the next semester. His family were that influential. Because they owned the school and paid everybody their salary, the teachers wouldn't bother him with a single reprimand or lecture about his mediocre grades. “I know that you know the teachers wouldn’t let that happen. Wouldn’t want their boss' only son failing in their classes.” Yuu said, somewhat bitterly. “This is not a joke, Yuu! You’re deliberately putting your life on the line for some lame nonsense and your reasons for doing this are bullshit if I keep seeing you come home bruised and battered.” Yuu turned his back on Yoichi, not wanting to see that worried look he’d always get whenever one of them mentioned his injuries. He didn’t like getting people worried about him especially Yoichi, but he just couldn't help what he was about to do. He had been doing it for nearly a year now and although there were occasions when he wanted to stop, Yuu couldn't escape it. He needed it. “Just tell the teachers I’m leaving.” The raven-haired teen said after a few seconds of silence. He heard Yoichi give a resigned sigh behind him and Yuu had to resist turning around and apologizing to him before Yoichi replied in a light tone. “As if they’d care anyway; you always break the rules.” Yuu couldn’t help but smile at that. “Rules were meant to be broken, aren’t they?” The amused snort behind him made Yuu feel much better after hearing that. “Only you’d be stupid enough to think that. One day, you’re going to end up breaking a very important law and the results will cost you greatly. “ It was meant to be said in a joking manner but the sudden spark in Yuu's emerald green eyes said otherwise. He gave a mischievous grin over his shoulder and said, “I never said anything about law breaking, Yoichi but thanks for the idea,” before jumping off the window and landing safely on the ground in a crouch. He ran towards the direction of the school gates, laughing all the while as Yuu recalled Yoichi’s eyes widening like saucers and his shouting of, “I was just kidding—don’t you dare, Amane Yuuichirou!” =============================================================================== Yoichi’s yells died in the air as he watched his best friend run away from the school, out to another one of his dangerous conquests. He heaved a sigh before turning around to see a woman at the other end of the classroom, her hands in her pockets, as she leaned casually agaisnt the entrance door. Yoichi wasn’t surprised by the intruder’s presence, already knowing she was there from the start. “So another failed attempt to get him to stay, huh?” The woman said with a smirk before stepping inside the room. “Nice to see you too, Shinoa-san.” Yoichi greeted indifferently, not really in the mood to tolerate her teasing attitude. “Oh don’t give me that look, Yoichi-kun. The kid was just doing what he needed to do.” Shinoa replied, her feline-like rose coloured eyes locked on the spot where Yuu had been moments before. Yoichi scoffed, “But he’s doing dangerous stuff, Shinoa-san! How could you be so blasé with that?! I know you care too.” Shinoa sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Of course, I do but that doesn’t mean I can dictate his every decision in life. Let him do what he wants; you know how stubborn he can get.” “He’s going to kill himself if I don’t try intervening soon.” He grumbled, eyes trailing toward the open window. Shinoa sharply trained her gaze on Yoichi, piercing him with an intense look before tilting her head to the side as if in thought. “You know, this strange affection you have for Yuu is really too much for a creature like you to have.” Yoichi’s cheeks turned a light pink but no further indication showed how much that statement affected him. “I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Of course, I care for him; He’s my best friend.” It was Shinoa’s turn to scoff before she gave a sigh and stalked closer to the male. “Don’t give me that shit, Yoichi-kun. You know we’re not allowed to have that sort of feelings toward a human.” Yoichi inwardly bristled at that. “Oh as if you don’t hold any affection for Yuu.” “He’s like a little brother to me but that’s natural as I’ve known him ever since he was ten. But in your case, it’s different. I could see it in your eyes whenever you look at him and don’t question me how I know. I’ve already been through this kind of thing so I know one when I see one. Hell, you’re not even supposed to feel this way actually.” Shinoa lectured him, something she doesn’t normally do. “I don’t care. Nothing is happening between me and Yuu and whatever delusions you have of my feelings are going to fade sometime soon.” No, Yoichi was not in denial. Shinoa, if possible, glared at him even more. The male had a feeling she didn’t like her thoughts being called delusional but Yoichi wasn’t going to take it back now. Though the phrase If looks could kill… did cross his mind. The lilac-haired woman spoke through gritted teeth, “And to make matters worse, you use your powers on him— deliberately right in front of him.” She held up a hand when she noticed Yoichi’s look of outrage. “Yes, I know you’re doing it to heal his wounds which I don’t mind but if those higher asses up there find out what you’ve been using your powers for, you’ll be— and I’m putting this mildly—in deep shit.” Yoichi gave her a strange look. “Nice to know you’re concerned.” “I’m more concerned with the fact that if you leave, Yuu will be unhappy and I care more about his feelings than your health.” She said whilst staring at her perfectly manicured nails. Of course, she would say something like that... The brunette knew that what he was doing to Yuu was both dangerous and very fatal if anyone found out about it but he couldn’t help but aid his friend’s injuries whenever he needed it. Yoichi already knew that this kind of affection he held for the other male should stop before it got out of hand but it’s not like he could prevent how he felt around people. Especially Yuu. Yuu was special to Yoichi, even when he first met the raven-haired teen moving to the room across from him in their apartment building. Yuu had been young and immature then, wanting to avoid living under the shadow of his parents but was still naive on how to live on his own. So Yoichi had took it upon himself to help the raven-haired teen and was instantly drawing in by his strong will, his lively nature and his compassionate heart. However, Yoichi knew by then that nothing could come of a relationship with a human so he kept his emotions in check and feelings at a distance. Although, it was slightly more difficult to handle now when Yuu's parents cut off his account, so with no money to pay his rent, the raven-haired teen had to move in with Yoichi instead. The smaller brunette struggled through though because Yuu was his friend first and foremost. “And I don’t really care about my feelings because nothing will happen.” Shinoa raised an eyebrow at that and Yoichi elaborated. “It’s just a one-time thing; it’ll pass. Crushes don’t really last long anyway.” He couldn’t help but feel as if he were trying to convince himself rather than to Shinoa but he pushed the thought to the back of his mind. Unable to stand being around her any longer, Yoichi quickly dashed around Shinoa before she could stop him. But even though he was out of the room in seconds, he could still hear Shinoa's parting words which played continuously in his mind until he reached his apartment. But crushes don't last for three years either, Yoichi-kun. =============================================================================== Yuu's steps slowed as he neared his destination for the day. He ran fifty miles from the school to an abandoned warehouse near the sea and he didn’t even feel tired. All this exercising was finally coming to fruition. Yuu walked inside the worn and dusty old place of the building and sat down on one of the boxes in the center of the room, placing his bag down beside him. He figured he must be early as the place was still empty so he tried to repress the building energy inside him until the others arrived. Thankfully, Yuu didn’t have to wait for long when just seconds later, the whistling sound of a knife being thrown at his direction made him turn to the right, just in time before it could embedd itself on his skull. He turned to the direction of the thrower but was met with three more knives flying swiftly towards him. He dodged one to his left, grabbed the knife that was aimed for his stomach and threw it before catching the last knife with the tip of his fingers that was about to hit the skin between his eyes. Their aim got better at least. Yuu then heard the sound of a pained shriek, the knife he had thrown hitting his target. “What? No greetings first?” His voice echoed around the building before somebody chuckled behind him. Yuu turned around to see a group of buff-looking males blocking his exit and the person in the front who Yuu assumed to be the leader gave him a malicious smile. He must be new then. Usually gang groups wouldn’t smile at Yuu like that if they had never encountered him before. And his excitement grew at the prospect of having to wipe off that stupid grin off his face once he was done with him and his gang. “So you must be the legendary Yuu, huh? How…cute.” The leader said mockingly with a sneer plastered on his face, his hooded eyes raking down Yuu's small, lithe body like a beast ready to attack its prey. His lackeys laughed along with him and Yuu just knew it was going to be an easy day today. At least Yoichi wouldn't have a fit once he came back home with little to no bruises and scratches. Now’s not the time to think about him. Yuu mentally reprimanded himself as the annoying leader started speaking again. “Well boys, it looks like we got ourselves an easy target after all. God, I can’t believe how the others actually thought that a kid like this would be so hard to beat. Sure he's got good reflexes and all but a swift punch to the gut would probably just snap him in half.” More laughter came after those words. Yuu's green eyes narrowed and darkened. Easy day or not, these people were going down for insulting him like that. It’s true though that his lanky form could deceive the eye of other gangsters, thinking it’d be a piece of cake to finish him off. But that’s why Yuu just loved the phrase: never judge a book by its cover, because that’s always what his enemies learned at the end of the day with him. “Alright. Why don’t we have some fun now, shall we?” The leader snapped his fingers and the group of men behind him eagerly charged towards Yuu. Yuu had to resist the urge to roll his eyes at the cliché way the leader’s always began a battle. Seriously, Yuu would rather go for the surprise attack any day if it was much better than this shit. The first guy that came up to Yuu actually tried punching him in the gut which earned the loser a swift kick to his leg making him stumble back on the person behind him. With his hands in his pockets, Yuu gave another high kick to his stomach and both men fell on a heap over each other. He felt another presence behind him and immediately dropped just as another punch was aimed at the back of his head. Yuu used his elbow to jab the guy on his groin which resulted for him to bend down in pain, presenting a perfect opportunity for Yuu to stand and knee him from behind. He didn’t have time to see if he fell on the others (which would have been funny to witness) as another guy came up with a fucking pole on hand, ready to jab it on Yuu's person. Yuu grabbed it before it could gash his leg and lifted with incredible strength both the guy and the spear up and swung it around the males closest to him who fell upon impact. He let go of the weapon while still swinging and the guy flew straight in the air before slamming hard against the opposite wall, landing with a resounding crash. “Use your fucking guns, for god’s sake!” Finally, someone's using their heads. Just as their leader said, the men started flashing out their guns and fired all at once in Yuu's direction. Only problem was that they couldn’t see him much due to his speed of dodging all the bullets directed at him. Some even ended up hitting their comrades whenever Yuu would ‘accidentally’ run right in front of them. Yuu was having the time of his life as he swerved away from another racing bullet; the adrenaline making him feel excited and alive as it usually did whenever he was fighting. He decided to do something foolish and stuck his tongue out at the angered leader which he quickly regretted as a knife suddenly found itself embedded on his thigh. “Shit!” He gasped more in shock than in pain that he would forget about those knife- throwing people from the start. Yuu's high mood dropped immediately as he yanked off the sharp weapon with gritted teeth whilst finding shelter behind a pile of boxes as bullets rained down on him. He didn’t care much about his wound as they usually surprisingly healed after a day or two. But what he did care was to finish this whole business once and for all. It was getting late already and Yoichi usually expected him to be home by nine or else he’d go out finding him in worry. Yuu wanted to avoid that happening as much as he could. Just the thought of Yoichi getting hurt made Yuu more determined to end this. He already got what he came here for. “Oh come out, come out wherever you are, legendary Yuu! Did that knife hit you on the wrong spot?” The leader’s mocking voice rang through the building just when Yuu spotted a metal pole three meters away from him. He smirked before standing up from his crouched position, ignoring the pain on his right leg as he ran to the pole; the sounds of bullets firing started up when he came into view. Yuu tumbled on the ground and managed to grab the object he needed before using it as a deflection to the bullets with his fast arm movements. He ran towards the group of men before somersaulting in the air and landing behind one of them to strike his metal pole at him. The guy fell on the floor with a thud as Yuu did it to two other male’s closest to him whilst still managing to counter all the bullets aimed at him. He grabbed one of the fallen guns on the floor from the men he hit and started firing at the men in their legs or arms. Never towards their head or heart. Never for the kill. Just as the last of the bullets in Yuu's gun finished, the gang members were all a pained heap on the floor, either groaning in agony or unconscious from the blow of his pole. It was only the leader left standing and Yuu couldn’t help the satisfactory grin on his lips as he noticed him shaking from head to toe. “How…how can anyone move that fast and st-strong?” He asked with a voice not quite as similar as to the one he used to mock Yuu with. Ah, how people’s mind set changes once they get to know me more. Yuu gave a snort at the leader’s question as he stalked towards him with predatory-like gait. “Because I’m not like other people.” He said before snuffing the daylights out of him with one swift blow to the head. Not really much to make it fatal but enough to leave a concussion when he woke up the next morning. Yuu dropped the pole with a tired sigh and stretched his arms a bit behind his back, the ache in his muscles satisfying him and the high energy inside his body vanishing completely. Grabbing his fallen bag from the side, he casually walked out of the now bloody and even messier warehouse. He closely inspected the gash on his thigh and realized he must have opened the wound more from all the exertion he did during the fight. Yuu sighed and ran a hand through his now damp and dirty hair. “Fuck, Yoichi's definitely going to kill me.” So much for an easy day… =============================================================================== Yuu started limping his way home by the time he was ten meters away from the apartment he shared with Yoichi. He could see, even from afar, that the light from their apartment window was on, which could only mean that Yoichi was still awake. Most probably waiting for him as he usually did whenever Yuu was out late. Just as he reached the entrance to the lobby, the elevator on the floor dinged and opened to reveal a worried Yoichi who rushed to meet him halfway. Without uttering a single word of greeting, Yoichi immediately pushed him to a chair then dropped down on his knees in front of him and began inspecting the wound on the raven-haired teen’s thigh. He let Yoichi do whatever he wanted as Yuu knew that he had already pissed his friend enough for getting a much more serious injury than before. It’s not like this was the first time he had ever come home bloody and wounded but he did promise Yoichi that afternoon that he’d be home safe. Well as safe as Yuu could manage in a fight to the death. His thoughts were confirmed when Yoichi suddenly made an annoyed sound at the back of his throat before giving Yuu a glare as he stood up. “I’m going to have to disinfect it then bandage it up. Come on; let’s go upstairs before anyone sees.” His clipped tone guaranteed Yuu that he needed to be on his best behavior tonight. Yuu didn’t know how Yoichi knew he was bleeding and injured as it would have been too dark to see from the window but he learned to never question these kinds of things from his friend. He’d be a hypocrite to say that friends shouldn’t keep secrets from one another because Yuu could never tell Yoichi his secrets. It’s not that he didn’t trust Yoichi; he did, very much. It’s just that Yuu's scared his friend would leave him if he ever found out about the truth. Just as Yuu was standing up, he fell immediately as a flare of pain coursed through his right side. Yoichi caught him before he’d hit the floor and snapped, “You’re not supposed to put weight on your leg, idiot!” “Then how am I supposed to reach our room?” Yuu retaliated. Yoichi lips curved up into a half-smile. “Easy.” Before Yuu could comprehend what was happening, he was suddenly lifted up bridal style by a pair of surprisingly strong arms under him and Yuu gave an indignant squeak at the sudden change of position. “Wha—! Yoichi! Put me down!” Yuu cried out, his hands immediately clasping around Yoichi's neck as he didn’t want to fall off. “You’re injured Yuu and you’re going to worsen it more if you keep walking or standing.” Yoichi laughed as he noticed how red Yuu's face got in embarrassment. He started marching towards the elevator. “Ugh, I’m not some kind of baby to be carried around with.” Yuu grumbled hiding his face against Yoichi's shoulders just in case anyone saw them as his friend punched the seventh button for their floor. “No, but you’re a patient in need so just shut up and let me treat you.” Yoichi answered with a bit of an edge to his tone that Yuu knew was still from his injured state. He sighed before staying silent the whole ride up and only then gave a quiet apology to his friend when he was finally placed down on their sofa in the living room. Yoichi hummed in acknowledgment before grabbing the first aid kit from the bathroom and started treating his thigh again. After a moment of silence of Yuu watching Yoichi carefully cleaning his wound, the smaller teen finally said, “I think I need you to take your pants off, Yuu." Yuu did obediently and noticed that Yoichi's cheeks seemed to turn a brighter shade of pink for some reason as he helped Yuu carefully extract his pants from his leg so that it wouldn’t infect the wound. Now only in his boxers, Yuu could see how deep the stab gashed his leg as the red wound stood in contrast against his fair thighs. Yoichi sighed and grabbed a bottle out of the kit and poured it into a cotton bud before swiping it gently on the wound. It stung a bit but Yuu could handle it. He’d dealt through worse after all. Yuu watched Yoichi working determinedly before saying, “Don’t you ever get tired of doing this, Yoichi?” “No.” Was the immediate response with no explanation forth coming. Yuu sighed, “But why? I’ve been doing this long before you knew me and not once have you complained about treating my injuries.” It was silent for a moment before Yoichi hummed and said, “I may dislike what you do and what you’re doing to yourself, Yuu. But,” he sighed, “I don’t like seeing my best friend hurt so I do my best to keep you safe even if you run yourself towards danger constantly.” Yuu couldn’t explain the rush of warmth he felt at Yoichi's words and he smiled softly at the other male who refused to look at him, staring resolutely at his job with red cheeks. “Now, if you’re quite done questioning, you need to shower before I can bandage your leg up. You stink.” Yuu rolled his eyes. There goes the mood. Yoichi carried the raven-haired teen to the bathroom, much to his protests and seated Yuu on the toilet seat before preparing his bath. They were silent the whole time Yoichi helped wash Yuu's body and Yuu felt like he was in one of those salon baths where you were handled with extra care like fragile china glass. Yoichi scrubbed his body as if he didn’t want to harm him any further; gentle touches and soothing massages almost made Yuu want to sleep in the tub and never leave. However, Yoichi nudged him before he could succumb to it and the other male helped Yuu out of the tub, respectfully not looking at his private bits. By the time, he finally dried and put on some clothes and bandages, Yuu was almost ready to fall flat on his face and sleep. Yuu didn’t realize how tired he was until the fatigue finally took its place. “My pills,” Yuu mumbled sleepily, staggering slightly into his room. “Oh, right.” Yoichi immediately went to Yuu's sidetable to fetch the bottle. However, when he lifted it, no jiggling sound was made and it felt too light. "Yuu, I think you’ve run out of pills.” Yoichi told him. Yuu's head snapped up, all thoughts of sleep gone from his mind. “What?” He limped towards Yoichi for the bottle and saw that, yes, he had no more pills. Yuu cursed to himself. How could he have forgotten such an important thing? He knew from last night that he had ran out but with the excitement and rush of today, it had completely left his mind. He’d just have to visit the clinic after school tomorrow, but then that would mean he wouldn’t have a pill for the rest of the day. The raven-haired teen sat heavily on his bed; he was scared. He didn’t know what would happen if he didn’t take his pills everyday and the phantom memories of his past left an impression that it wouldn’t be good. I’ll just have to immediately run to the clinic after school, or maybe I could skip a few classes… “Yuu, are you okay? Is it bad if you won’t take your pills?” Yoichi's voice snapped Yuu out of his thoughts; the importance of his pills was something he had to keep a secret about, “It's fine, Yoichi. I’ll just go to the clinic after school to fetch some.” Yoichi's eyes narrowed, “And by after school you mean you’d finish all of your classes first before going, right?” Damn… Yuu rolled his eyes, “But,Yoichi, I really don’t need the extra classes and you know how we’re gonna end late tomorrow!” He couldn’t help but whine. But Yoichi was resolute. “No, this is your punishment for actually getting a serious injury when you specifically told me that you’d be fine this time.” “I can’t control what happens in a fight! The injuries are to be expected.” Yoichi crossed his arms over his chest. “Well, you can at least prevent them. God, Yuu, you’re not a child anymore.” Yuu averted his eyes, not wanting to look at Yoichi's disappointed and concerned face. I can’t help it, Yoichi. I’m sorry. But the words he wanted to say were lodged in his throat and he couldn’t manage to speak them out. Yuu looked down, fiddling with the empty bottle in his hands until Yoichi gave a resigned sigh before he turned towards the door. Feeling like he had angered his friend, Yuu moved to stand and apologise but he winced as a shot of pain sparked from his thigh. "I told you not to put weight on it, didn't I?" Yoichi paused by the door, his hand over the knob. He looked at Yuu one last time before he turned his head around and said, "I'll accompany you tomorrow to the clinic so don't try going on your own, or else I really will stop treating your injuries, Yuu." Yuu knew he didn't mean it but he felt relieved all the same that Yoichi still liked him enough to be threatening him so weakly. As his friend closed the door behind him, Yuu moved under the covers and leaned back comfortably on his bed. He couldn't help but wonder what tomorrow would bring as he had never missed a day to swallow his pill before. Maybe it was the curiosity of wanting to know his foggy past but Yuu was slightly anticipating the day's return. He could only hope it wouldn't be too life changing. =============================================================================== The cold, night air breezed through the wind, billowing their capes through the air as the sound of jarring, upbeat music blared out of the famous club they could see below them. "Are you ready, Mika?" An annoying, lilting voice spoke behind the blonde who was standing on the edge of the roof building. With a sway to his hips, the man with silver hair and a cocky smirk strolled to stand beside the blond male, glancing down to look at all the potential preys before him. He licked his red-stained lips, already eyeing a human looking delicious in her black, low V neckline and bunned up brown hair. His companion beside him, a young man with blonde locks and icy, blue eyes glared at the exotic scene, his face a mask of indifference and arrogance. With a tilt of his head, the others behind them silently followed their masters, leaping from the tall building and landing quietly on the ground. The blond stood up, unclasping his cape to reveal a black leather attire that accentuated his nicely formed, slender build. He glanced behind him at the people wearing similar outfits before he smirked, a toothy fang glinting under the moonlight. "Yeah. Let's hunt." ***** Rule #2: trespassing in another’s territory is prohibited and punishable by death ***** Chapter Summary there are nightmares....then there are crazy men waiting for the chance to slice his neck off. Yuu was begging, bawling his eyes out and screaming his voice hoarse but the pain didn’t stop; static continued to race through his sensitive skin like he was under a wave of an electric current, shocking his brain and refusing to leave him at peace. His back arched as the pain steadily grew and grew until his whole vision was consumed in red and black. He wanted to die. "N-No more! I don't want this! Nghh…Dad!" He would much rather die now, only so the pain would go away. His body was already losing its strength, struggling weakly against the binds that made his skin scratch and bruised red. "Da-Dad! Mom! Please— ahhh! Help!" Yuu couldn't take it anymore. It was too much. Too much. He was going to die; his voice was rising in pitch, blood gurgling rapidly under his skin as the horrible, throbbing pain overwhelmed his mind and body and slowly his— Beep! Beep! With the sound of a machine going off, Yuu suddenly felt the pain ebb away and he whimpered with relief, his limbs shaking uncontrollably where they laid at his sides. "I-I don't want this anymore! Dad, Mom please...st-stop." "Hush, Yuuichirou. We're almost done." Yuu broke down, a fresh new wave of tears spilling from his green eyes as the pain returned once more, its effects growing faster and stronger, increasing by tenfold and the tormenting experience had his mouth opening to release a scr— "STOP!" Yuu snapped his eyes open, the familiar white ceiling of his apartment bedroom greeting back at him as he panted heavily; the open blinds from his window shined down rays of light into his room. Another morning. Another day. Another dream. Yuu breathed in and out deeply as he sat up, his skin sticky from sweat as his nightclothes stuck to his person. He glanced to the side and realized it was only 4:10 am; the nightmare waking him up far earlier than it should. This was the first time in a long while that Yuu had dreamt about his past. But this time, it was different. The emotions had felt so real— the smell, the sounds, the pain. Yuu couldn't stop thinking about it, even as the images began to fade and his mind cleared up. However, as Yuu wrapped a blanket around his shivering form, he heard a crash just outside his room before Yoichi suddenly swung the door wide open. Scant light filtered through the opening, casting a soft glow around his brunet friend. He was still wearing his duck-patterned pajamas and his brown hair was a tousled mess but his eyes were wide and alert, ready for any signs of danger. “Yuu-kun! Are you alright?!” Yoichi gasped, immediately rushing to his friend’s side. Yuu blinked at him, still feeling slightly disoriented before slowly nodding his head. “Yeah, it was just a bad dream.” His friend’s eyebrows scrunched together in worry, “A nightmare?” Yuu sighed and shook his head at Yoichi, “I don’t know but my head is now pounding because of it.” He rubbed his aching forehead for emphasis. “I’ll go get some painkillers for you. Hold on.” Yoichi said, taking a moment to rub Yuu’s back reassuringly before he moved off to the bathroom. Yuu watched him go with tired eyes and he had to thank his luck for what was probably the nth time for having Yoichi Saotome as his friend and roommate. Yuu probably would have stayed in bed and pathetically cried for the rest of the night if he’d still been alone in his previous residence. “Here you go, Yuu-kun! I even brought you a new set of pajamas since I noticed you were sweating a lot.” Yoichi emerged from the bathroom with folded clothes over his arm and a bottle of painkillers in his other hand. From Yuu's point of view, Yoichi was like Yuu’s knight in shining armor, only smaller and more adorable-looking. “Oh, thanks.” Yuu murmured, taking them from him until he realized the pattern on the pajamas. He groaned in dismay. “Did you have to get the pink teddy bear ones?” Yoichi’s face morphed into an eager smile despite Yuu’s weak glare, shamelessly not sorry for choosing them, “But I bought these for your birthday and I never saw you wear it!” “Well that’s because I wear them at night and change in the morning before you could see them.” “But that’s not fair, Yuu-kun!” Yoichi pouted, eyes growing pitifully wide to persuade Yuu to wear them. The brunet knew he’d won when Yuu clicked the roof of his mouth with his tongue, reluctantly picking up the eyesore of a clothing and pulling them on after he removed his sweat-drenched pajamas. Yoichi’s smile could rival the sun when Yuu stood before him, wearing the outfit that laughably reached till the end of his arms and legs. It made Yuu look like a kid, in all honesty. “You look so cute, Yuu-kun!” Yuu raised his eyes to glumly stare at his grinning friend, “This is the first and the last time you will ever see these again.” He sat back down on his bed with a huff as Yoichi pouted and whined at him, though he inwardly appreciated the brunet for cheering him up even a little bit. Already, Yuu could feel himself relaxing, his shoulders slumping from their tense posture. “Ehhh~ Yuu-kun’s being grumpy again.” Yoichi giggled, picking up the clothes Yuu threw aside for laundry. “I still find that very cu—” Yoichi suddenly stopped moving as his nostrils flared, glancing down at the shirt and shorts in his arms. Yuu stared at Yoichi strangely as he picked up a painkiller for his headache, “Is there something wrong, Yoichi?” That seemed to snap Yoichi from his sudden stupor. Shaking his head, he gave Yuu another small smile before he told him that he’d see him in the morning. Yuu didn’t know if he was imagining it but it seemed like Yoichi couldn’t leave his room faster without making it look too obvious. With a slam of his door, Yuu was once again alone. Yawning, he swallowed the pill dry and crawled back under the sheets, falling asleep once his head hit the pillow. =============================================================================== Yoichi made it as fast as humanly possible into his own room, banging the door shut before he collapsed on the floor, back hitting the hard surface with a soft thump. His skin was tingling, something strange stirring in his gut as he stared down at the clothes in his hands. W-What is this urge inside me? Slowly he brought the shirt up to his face, and inhaled the smell clinging to the fabric, his mind lightheaded from the sweet, sweet aroma wafting from it. Was this Yuu? How and when did his scent suddenly became so...intoxicating? As a werewolf, Yoichi shouldn’t even be interested in human smell and for a while, Yuu’s smell was as normal and bland as any human out there. But now, Yoichi couldn’t stop bringing the shirt closer to his nose, filling his mind with the addictive scent of his friend that made his whole body heat up in weird places. When Yoichi realized what he was doing, he threw the cloth far away from himself, gasping for breath as he reigned in his instincts and urge to claw for the clothes again. He tried to breathe in normal air but all he could smell was Yuu’s scent still lingering in his mind. Grabbing at the ends of his hair, Yoichi pulled harshly on them and groaned at the slight pain. This wasn’t right. He shouldn’t be so attracted to Yuu...but he was. Why does...Yuu-kun smell so good? =============================================================================== The next morning, Yuu felt more alive than ever, managing to sleep without another nightmare revisiting his dreams, though he couldn’t help but be more than a little concerned for Yoichi. “Yoichi, are you feeling alright?” Yuu looked towards his friend with a chicken in his mouth, sprays of small bits of meat flying from his mouth. Yoichi glanced up and made a small disgusted sound at Yuu’s manners...or lack thereof. “What makes you say that, Yuu-kun?” Quickly swallowing his mouthful, Yuu began, “For one thing…” He eyed the significant space between them as they were eating lunch in the rooftop and Yoichi had decided to sit on the farthest end from Yuu. “...you’re sitting really far away from me like I have a disease or something.” Yoichi blinked like he didn’t understand. “Oh, really? I hadn't noticed.” He shrugged as he continued eating from his bento, making no move to sit closer to Yuu. Squinting his eyes at his friend, Yuu didn’t believe him for a second. What happened to make Yoichi like this? The strange behavior had started since this morning when Yoichi had deemed it necessary to stand nearly five feet away from Yuu and even made it a point to wear a face mask to school. Like did Yuu smell that bad or something? He subtly checked under his arm for any body odor (the action rewarded a strange look from Yoichi) and when there was nothing questionable smelling, Yuu figured it must be something else. Was it because of last night? Had Yuu freaked Yoichi out too much with his screaming? Yuu fidgeted in place, suddenly losing his appetite. His stomach churned at the thought of displeasing Yoichi, and Yuu wished that his friend hadn’t seen him like that last night. Maybe he should try wearing a gag next time or drink sleeping pills before knocking out, despite how ludicrous it sounded. It was bad enough that Yoichi always insisted on dressing his wounds, taking care of him without anything in return which made Yuu feel horrible for disturbing Yoichi to this extent. “Are you sure, Yoichi? It’s not because of...last night?” Yuu asked again, heart picking up speed from nervousness. Yoichi hesitated for a second before he pulled his face mask down and smiled at Yuu the way he usually would, “Yeah, don’t worry about me, Yuu-kun. Everything’s fine. I’m just feeling sorta sick right now.” It can’t be fine if you’re being like this! Yuu stirred in his mental struggle for a moment longer, not satisfied with Yoichi’s answer at all. Soon, the bell rang to signal the end of lunchtime and as Yoichi packed his empty bento and stood up, Yuu took the opportunity to finally step closer to him. “Hey, Yoichi,” Yuu began, placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “If there’s anything troubling you, you know you could trust me, right?” He tried to ignore the way Yoichi’s muscles tensed under his touch. The brunet nodded his head rapidly, his locks bouncing around his face, “Yup! You’re the number one person I’d go to for sure! Now...if we don’t hurry for class, we’ll be late.” He rushed right off the rooftop after that, like he was excited for class, something which Yuu never really expected from his friend. Was Yoichi lying to me? Yuu didn't know if Yoichi was trying to put on a facade so that Yuu wouldn’t know about his true feelings. As he watched Yoichi’s back disappear down the stairs, he clenched his fists and without thinking, punched the fence beside him. It left a sharp sting against his knuckles but Yuu ignored it, only thinking about how much he regretted not stocking his pills up last night which probably led to his dreams resurfacing. If he hadn’t, then Yoichi wouldn’t have had to see that side of him. God, did Yuu feel like an idiot. Breathing deeply, Yuu set off from the rooftop but didn’t immediately head to class. No, he knew where he needed to go. It was better if he could could buy his pills now, rather than spend the whole day watching Yoichi distancing himself from him. Yuu grimaced and placed a hand over his chest as he rushed past the school’s gate, the late afternoon slowly shifting to an early sunset and streaking the whole sky orange. Why does my chest hurt so much? =============================================================================== There was the sound of boots thudding against slate and concrete as a group of vampires jumped from one roof to another, making their way back home to base. “Uwaa! I got myself stuffed last night.” A purple haired male exclaimed enthusiastically by the front lines, patting his stomach proudly. The dark haired vampire beside him rolled his eyes, “You drank more than you should have, Lacus.” “Au contraire, Rene-kun,” Lacus waggled a finger at his friend’s indifferent face, “They kept on begging for it. What right was it for me to disobey?” “I’m sure they weren’t in their right state of mind to protest.” Was his immediate reply. Lacus gasped and clutched the front of his shirt, looking for all the world as if he were appalled by his friend's words, “Is that what you think of me, Rene? That my charm isn’t enough to compel them?” “Your powers of persuasion were more than enough to have them flock towards you.” "I'll have you know, I was completely natural last—" “Both of you, shut up.” Mika suddenly snapped at the very front of the group, looking over his shoulder to give them a stern eye. The two vampires flinched but didn't look any more intimidated unlike the rest of the fearful pack down the back. None of them wanted to earn the ire of their prince, the one vampire who commanded the whole troupe. It was common knowledge that Mikaela Shindo was a one everyone knew to steer clear off. His power and prestige was well known in the Clan and no one else could disobey him other than their Queen. “Do you have any reports of the one we were supposed to keep an eye on, Ferid?” Mika inquired as they swiftly changed directions mid-air, everyone following along the blond’s lead. A silver-haired man tilted his head just a few inches behind the blond, “Not much, but I noticed some of the young men I was tracking down earlier went missing, along with her scent completely disappearing from the air.” Mika raised an eyebrow, his expression stormy, “So they’ve changed their victims to young men now huh? First children, teenagers and now adults...none of their actions make sense. What are they looking for?” “Not only that, but I heard a couple of our kind went missing a few days back.” “Were they powerful?” “Barely, you think it’s power they want?” Ferid side-eyed the prince who was emitting quite a dark aura around him. “I don’t know…we still don't have enough lead against them.” Ferid tsked, obviously irritated with the situation, “Those damn werewolves need to learn their place.” “We're not really sure if it's them yet.” Mika sighed, bypassing a building before making a right turn. Lacus, with his big mouth, couldn’t help but cut in, “But who else would want anything against us? Humans still think we’re myths or some shit.” He laughed under his breath at the absurd belief. Mika sighed through his nose, responding, “I understand but we can't go around accusing them without evidence. It will just start another–” Suddenly, Mika stopped, landing on a tall roof deck with the rest of his confused companions halting behind him. What was that? He'd caught onto something when he jumped between those two buildings, something only his heightened sense of smell could pick up but too faint for any one else to smell it. “Mikaela?” “Go on ahead. Ferid, you're in charge.” Mika swiped a hand at the taller male, ignoring the shiver of distress that ran through the pack at his command. “What! Are you serious?!” Lacus whined, the only one brave enough to voice his dissent. Ferid blinked at the sudden change before a smirk crossed his pale features and he bowed his head at his prince, “With pleasure.” Mika waited until all the vampires had moved away, leaving him behind with an attractive smell that left his mouth watering. Whoever's emitting such a scent was most definitely delicious. His nostrils flared as he breathed it in and immediately, warmth filled his core and his nerves blazed up like an open fire. Mika snapped his red eyes open and swiveled to the left where he knew the delicious scent was coming from, body ready to pounce. Licking his lips hungrily, he leaped down and ran through the thin alleyways between humble, self-made houses, heading towards his new prey as fast as he could without detecting attention from the other beasts. I'm going to make it mine. =============================================================================== Yuu sneakily ran past the school gates without breaking a sweat. He'd honed the skill of escaping school premises into an art. Besides, he was in a hurry; he needed to get to the clinic before it was too late. Using his speed, Yuu managed to get through five blocks from his school to the closest bus station in around ten minutes. Talk about excited. Lucky for him, the bus arrived just three minutes after he came. It would not have been a pleasant journey if Yuu had ran there on foot, with his schoolbag still strapped on his back. He didn’t think his stamina could last for so long since the clinic was situated a little deep in the city. Paying the bus fee, Yuu took his seat by the window, noticing absentmindedly that an old woman sat beside him, and soon the vehicle was rolling back on the road. Sighing, Yuu rested his head against the glass window, watching the scenery rush past him with lidded green eyes. Finally he could get his new bottle of pills and rest easily from now on. He hadn’t meant to miss his previous appointment with his doctor; it just slipped from his mind especially when Yuu was overtaken by the urge to fight. He'd never really understood what was wrong with him ever since the accident with his parents which was the cause for his orphaned status. All he knew was that he’d have nightmares of a past he couldn’t remember and so Yuu needed his pills to suppress them. For nine years, they’d been working splendidly but Yuu knew he’d mess up one day and create a blunder, like now. God, he just hoped Yoichi would stop trying to put a distance between them after this. That was originally Yuu’s job. Halfway into the ride while playing love live on his phone, he felt a chill run down his spine like someone was keeping a close eye on him. Glancing up from his phone, Yuu swept his eyes left and right, inspecting the people in the bus if any of them were staring at him oddly. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, Yuu laid his head back against the bus window, relaxing his tense muscles. Must have just been his imagination. Then, there was a flash of red and black streaking right outside his window and Yuu jolted, sitting up quickly and ignoring the dirty look the old woman sent beside him. He pressed his face closer to the screen, eyes wide and— there it was again! A streak of yellow now had just jumped from one building to the next and Yuu was amazed. What was that? Yuu glanced around the bus and it seemed like no one else had seen the weird blur other than him. It's alright…my stop is just the next one… The bus suddenly came to a screeching halt and Yuu jolted along with the rest of the passengers, yelps and murmured complaints echoing around the cramped space. It can't be... Yuu stood up from his seat and looked at the windshield by the front, his heart sinking when his suspicion came true. Someone in a black leather suit stood in front of the bus, his golden locks hiding most of his pale face but Yuu could see, even from his seat, that he was smiling quite sinisterly. Yuu suddenly got the huge urge to run away as fast as he could. “Uh...excuse me.” Yuu stumbled out of his seat, but it seemed like he spurred everyone into action as people began standing up and flooding the isle to the entrance, shouting their queries to the driver. Yuu didn't know why he was getting all nervous but that guy outside meant business and somehow, Yuu knew he came for him. This was a first. Yuu was always the predator in fights, the one who always had the upper hand in everything but now, Yuu had never felt more helpless than before. He didn't like to admit it but he sensed the dangerous aura coming from the guy. Yuu didn't have the skill to beat him. Knowing he shouldn't stay here for long, Yuu raced out of the confused crowd towards the back seat and punched open a window. He winced when one of the glass pierced through the skin between his knuckles but he could whine about the blood later as he slipped through the opening and jumped off it. Landing on his feet, Yuu immediately set off to the direction where he knew the clinic would be– just a small, isolated building behind the bakery shop. But as soon as Yuu left the bus, he immediately felt the presence of the “other one” right behind him, it's dark aura almost overwhelming him with it's insatiable bloodlust. Resisting the urge to shiver, Yuu willed himself to face forward and run as fast as he could, dust flying after him. Cars honked at him as Yuu rushed through the busy street almost getting run over by a black Mercedes before he slid his back over the hood. He didn’t stop running even when the snarl of the— whatever was chasing after him— sounded like a feral beast. Yuu could have sworn that a person was hounding him instead of an animal? Wanting to get away more than ever, Yuu felt as if the clinic was his only sanctuary. For some reason, getting inside the clinic would save him somehow and what used to be a short trip turned into the longest journey in his life. It felt like he couldn't reach the corner of the bakery shop faster. But when the fluorescent lights of the too bright SANGGU CLINIC sign came into view, Yuu almost sighed in relief, his destination was near. He would be safe! That was, until a growl from behind reminded him of his pursuer. He willed himself to put on a burst of speed, his breath already erratic and heart pounding loudly against his ears. However, Yuu heard the footsteps behind him suddenly disappear and the confusion made him falter for a moment. However, that moment almost cost him his life when, out of nowhere, a clawed hand shot out from the darkness of the night and scratched his shoulder, probably intending to grab Yuu by the neck had someone not hauled Yuu in first. “Get away from my property, bloodsucker!” The blonde woman shouted to someone Yuu couldn't see as he was too much in shock from escaping death. His shoulder throbbed from the injury he sustained but Yuu’d handled worst before and he was still trying to understand what had just happened to him. The slam of the door broke through his reverie and Yuu glanced up at his doctor, Mitsuba Sanggu, looking quite thoroughly pissed off. “Why the fuck are you only here now? Didn't I set an appointment for you a week ago?” And there was that spunky attitude he didn't miss. Scratching his head, Yuu offered a sheepish grin, “I...forgot?” Mitsuba’s answer to that was, of course, a painful whack to his head before she dragged him to a chair. “Sit.” Yuu obeyed immediately, knowing he was now at the mercy of this woman. He watched as Mitsuba grabbed her medical tools and placed it beside Yuu, the tinkling sound of the utensils ringing in the otherwise empty room, before she moved to check on his wound. He couldn't help but notice the face mask she wore on like the one Yoichi had. Was everyone getting sick with him or something? After a moment of watching her cleaning his bleeding knuckle, Yuu finally asked, “Do you know...what was chasing me out there and why it didn't attack you?” Mitsuba side eyed him but didn't respond immediately until she finished swiping an antiseptic around Yuu’s wounds, “A crazed man probably.” He narrowed his eyes at her, knowing she had more than that, “I don't believe you. That thing attacked me with fucking claws.” “There are strange people living out here, Yuu you know that.” Mitsuba shrugged, still keeping up her blase expression. Yuu knew he wouldn’t be able to get anything out of her when she didn't want to say it. He sighed, and slumped on his seat, watching her bandage his wound firmly but not too tight. “Yeah, but none of them had ever tried to come after me before.” She muttered under her breath that sounded like “keeping you safe” though Yuu wasn't sure. “Well now they did. Don’t worry about it. If you come around this town not as late—” She gave him the stink eye, “—as today, then you could avoid them.” Turning around, she fiddled through her cabinet before slamming a white bottle of pills in front of him. “Here.” Grabbing it, Yuu shook the bottle out of habit, listening to the familiar clanking of the pills scattering inside. It still baffled Yuu sometimes how she gave all of these pills free of charge. Living in a world where nothing was ever free, where every cost had a consequence, Yuu had found it difficult to trust her at first. But in the end, Yuu knew he couldn't ever bring himself to dislike her. She’d been the one to take care of his injuries after the car accident when his parent’s died and Yuu knew he owed her a debt even if she always told him he hadn’t need to pay her at all. Sometimes, Mitsuba could be really kind-hearted despite her rough attitude towards him. “Thanks, Mitsuba.” “No problem. But you probably should take one before you go.” Yuu knew that wasn’t a suggestion but an order. Under her stern eyes, Yuu popped one into his mouth and swallowed it, his Adam's apple bobbing before she nodded her head in satisfaction. “Well, I’ll take my leave now.” “Wait.” The blonde went over to the entrance and slowly opened the door, then just as quickly shutting it in front of his face before he could even take a step outside. “Hey—!” “On second thought, stay here for the night.” “What?” “Crazy guy might attack you again and I'm sure you wouldn't want to be going home this late at night?” As much as Yuu wanted to tell her that he wasn't scared of this “crazed man”, he couldn't forget the almost tangible taste of fear when his neck had almost been sliced off. Sighing in defeat, Yuu nodded and turned back inside, “I'll call Yoichi then, that I'll be staying here.” Unknown to him, there was a silent feud between two great beasts behind him, red and purple eyes clashing in a mixture of hate and dominance. =============================================================================== Mika growled, his posture tense where he was crouched on the building adjacent to the clinic. Fucking werewolf…stealing my prey. As clouds parted under the crisp, cool evening, the vampire, with his face shadowed, leaped away from his hiding spot, waiting for another opportunity to seize him instead.
