Otabek’s hair was splayed against the white pillow and Yuri could just barely smell his cologne. His boyfriend looked ridiculously adorable with his grey sweater and a little bit of drool at the side of his mouth. Leaning forward, Yuri left a little kiss on the man’s cheek before snuggling into his chest. It was at this moment that a surge of happiness and peace engulfed him and he never wanted it to go away. ***** The Death of Mila Babicheva ***** Chapter Summary An attempt on Yuri's life takes the life of his friend instead. The ache that Yuri’s heals were causing him was really spoiling his mood and he was contemplating whether or not it was time to go home as he sifted through the various items on the rack in front of him. Picking up a shimmery gold shirt, he put it against his body and turned around to show his bodyguard and friend, Mila. “Hey, what do you think about this?” he asked. She turned around to look but before she could say anything, a load band echoed through the store and she fell forward into his arms in a heap. With ringing ears, Yuri was crushed under the sudden weight of his friend and as he struggled to breathe, he let out a soft whisper of his friend’s name. He pushed against her body, the sense of panic crawling at the inside of his chest. He needed to get away. Yuri momentarily lapsed in his struggles against the cooling body of his friend as his eyes latched onto the burly man game around the corner of their aisle. With one last shove, Mila’s body rolled off of his and his sucked in a gulp of air before trying to pick himself up, only to slip and fall into the pool of blood that had flooded the floor. He felt nauseous as he tasted the iron of Mila’s blood, but before he could throw up, a second gunshot sounded and with it, a fire erupted from his left thigh. He let out a scream, tears prickling his eyes as he continued to desperately get away. Crawling against the floor he managed to slip into the next aisle, and somehow – miraculously – stand up and run out of the store. It was only now that the terrified screams of his fellow shoppers reached his ears. His eyes frantically searched around for a way to get out when the glow of an exit sign caught his eye and he immediately bolted towards it. As he closed the door, he looked over his bare shoulder (which was smeared with drying blood, something that he ignored) and saw the burly man spot him from inside the store and start making his way towards Yuri. Entering the parking lot was both disorienting and relieving. The screams from before were muffled and the temporary safety from his hunter made his head swim. He let his body to lean back against the wall and gulp in oxygen. In the quietness of the lot, Yuri was startled to realise that the feeling of his thrashing heart seemed to encompass his entire body. With the adrenaline going down, his ability to ignore the gunshot wound was gone, and the deep aching fire became increasingly painful. To top it all off, the events of the past minutes crashed down on him, causing Yuri’s body to start trembling as he pushed back the memories of his friend’s dead body, her eyes accusingly looking up at him. Looking around, his eyes hungrily soaked up the image of his surroundings. There were few cars there and the dreary slush of dirt and snow coated almost every surface that was close to the ground. He stood close to a corner and as he heard the door open behind him, he quickly limped around the corner and held on to his breath. The door clanged close and the man walked in the opposite direction of Yuri, his surprisingly quiet footsteps, clacked and clacked and clacked until they disappeared. Yuri let out a sigh and slide down the wall, the pain radiating from his leg worsening until he couldn’t stand it. The panic that was constricting his chest just a few seconds before, was getting intenser by the second. Letting his leg lay out in front of him, he fumbled with his glittery hand bag. His trembling, red hands were slipping with the tiny zipper and soon enough he was desperately clawed at the bag; he needed to get his phone and call Nikolai. “Fucking shi-,” his muttered curse was cut off by the roaring sound of a motorcycle. He listened as the rider pulled into a parking spot and started walking towards him. The cyclist had heavier steps than the man trying to kill him and Yuri wasn’t sure whether this was a good or bad sign. Not knowing what to do, he curled up into a tiny ball, attempting to make himself smaller; only succeeding in forcing a strangled cry of pain to escape his mouth. His whole body froze in complete terror. Oh god. Yuri squinted his eyes shut and curled his body even tighter together (except for his left leg, it lay limply in front of him) as he held his breath. His arms were covering his head and Yuri was barely aware of the fact that his whole being was trembling. Undoubtedly, he was covered in blood and looking very messy - pathetic. As Yuri sat there, he prayed to whoever was out there that the person coming towards him was a friend rather than a foe. ===============================================================================   Otabek was exhausted. Between the tiring trip from Almaty to Moscow, as well as adjusting to everything being in Russian, all the Kazakhstani man wanted to do was pass out at his crappy hotel and sleep for a week. But he had a job interview set up directly after his flight, so he hadn’t had any time to do anything but drop his things off at the hotel and pick up the rental bike. Parking said bike, he made his way to the entrance when he heard a high-pitched cry coming from in between the entrance and a parked car. Curiously, he made his way towards the car and peeked around to see the tiny figure of a teenage girl curled up on the ground, one blood soaked leg set out in front of her. A surge of protectiveness bounced forward as a similar situation came to mind, one involving his precious sister and the neighbourhood bullies. Otabek creeped around the car and went to crouch down beside the poor girl. “Hello?” Otabek asked, noticing how the teen in front of them flinched. “Are you alright?” At this, she glanced up and glared at him before resuming her previous position. “What hap-,” “Either kill me or fuck off!” the voice spat, looking up at him. “What happened?” he tried to ask, but he doubted he would get an answer so he turned his attention towards source of a small puddle of blood he had just noticed. Her leg seemed to have a scrape across the side. Wow what happened. “They killed her.” The voice said, as she seemingly sunk further within herself. “Who?” “My bodyguard, Mila.” Bodyguard? “Who are you?” Again, the girl looked up with a piercing glare. “Yuri Plisetsky.” Well that’s not a girl name, oops. “Well Yuri, do you need he-,” Otabek was interrupted by the shrill noise of a blaring ringtone that repeated the word Nyah repeatedly. Yuri jumped at the sound and dived around the corner to his silver purse, he had never met a teenage boy who carried around a purse before. The boy in front of him, fumbled with the bag but Otabek saw that his blood smeared hands were struggling to open it. Otabek went forward and opened for him, rubbing his finger against the concrete to get the blood off. Yuri answered the phone with a soft, “Hello.” Through the receiver, Otabek could hear the response; someone who had a gruff voice was on the other end. “Yuri, are you alright? I heard there was a shooting at the mall that you went to!” the other line said. “Nikolai… Grandpa?” the boy said before he managed before he broke down in sobs. Otabek felt awkward listening in on this obviously vulnerable moment that Yuri was having, but continued to anyway. “They killed her! She’s dead, Mila’s dead!” “Okay calm down, have you been hurt?” “The man that shot m-me, he’s still here!” Yuri gulped in a breath and Otabek thought that Yuri looked a bit on the ill side and hearing what he just said, Otabek wasn’t surprised. Whoever had shot him, and probably killed his bodyguard, was still alive and walking around. “Yuri I’m sending some of my me – No fuck it! – I’m coming to get you.” “Grandpa, it hurts!” Yuri complained and Otabek was seriously concerned that Yuri might pass out. Which he did, hitting his head on the ground. “Yuri, Yuri are you there?” “Yura?” “Yuratchka!” ***** Otabek's Protection Is Something Yuri Might Need ***** Chapter Summary Yuri's attacker comes back and Otabek meets Nikolai. The boy’s grandfather continued to yell through the phone, trying to get the attention of his, now unconscious, grandson. “Yuri, are you alright?” the man yelled. Otabek was torn between just leaving the boy there – because whatever he was caught up in, it wasn’t good – or helping him. “Yuri answer the phone right now!” the gruff voice continued and Otabek made a decision that he was probably going to regret in the future. He picked up the phone. “Hello?” “Yuri! Is that you?” the grandfather answered. “No. My name is Otabek Altin and your grandson is currently passed out at my feet.” “If you hurt him, I will make you regret the day you were born!” “No, I won’t hurt your grandson, sir.” Otabek replied, “I just wanted you to that I’ll look after him until you arrive.” There was a pause from the older man before he continued. “What do you want?” “What do you mean?” “I’ll give you what ever you want, just don’t hurt Yuri.” “I’ll only look after him until you get here, then I’ll leave. I don’t want anything.” Another pause. “Fine. We’ll be there soon.” The line was cut off and Otabek placed the phone down and looked over at Yuri. They boy looked pale and, even unconscious, his face looked pained. Which was understandable considering he had been shot. The only thing Otabek didn’t understand right now is why anyone would go out to kill Yuri. He must be important, he had had a bodyguard after all. But what sort of important was he, political… social… Otabek didn’t know. Contemplating this, Otabek slid off his leather jacket and bunched it up underneath the blonde’s head. He was going to go sit down when he heard a crash followed by a muffled curse coming from the other end of the parking lot. Looking up, Otabek caught sight of a large shadow making its way towards them. Otabek was surprised at the softness of the man’s footsteps, considering the size of his shadow. Could this be the man that had shot Yuri and his bodyguard? Otabek wasn’t about to wait and find out. Pressing his body against the wall, he decided to use his element of surprise against the unsuspecting man and hopefully knock him out before he could hurt either himself or Yuri. It wasn’t going to be fair, but Otabek gave up on fair a long time ago. His body coiled in the familiar anticipation for a fight as he clenched his fisted, his mind running through the possible moves that he could do to defeat his opponent. However, Otabek knew from experience that any plans would be thrown out the window when the fight started and the adrenaline kicked in. A few more steps and the man would be in range for a punch. Three. Two. One. Otabek whirled around the corner and hit the guy in the nose, pain shot up his arm. The man in front to him was as burly as his shadow would suggest. Both of his arms had fading tattoo sleeves and his bottom row of his gaping mouth was gold. The man was messy, like he had just rolled around in dirt and the horrid smell of his body odour assaulted Otabek’s nose. Before the man could recover from Otabek’s blow, the Kazakhstani man swept forward and delivered a swift knee to the man’s abdomen. As his opponent kneeled down, Otabek lifted his leg up and struck the man in the sick with a strong kick, probably breaking a few ribs in the process. By now, the man was groaning and cursing on the ground. Otabek didn’t think that the man was going to move anytime soon and was about to move away when he saw the guy’s hand shift towards his side, underneath his jacket. A gun. The man had shot Yuri and killed the Russian’s bodyguard, so Otabek doubted that he would be merciful to a stranger who had just beat him up. Lifting his foot one more time, he connected it with the man’s face, gaining a load crunch of bones and a limp body as the man feel unconscious. Leaning down, Otabek, stole the gun that the man was going to pill and then continued to search the body for any more weapons. Only finding one more firearm, Otabek unloaded the articles of bullets and turned his attention back to the unconscious boy. Yuri was starting the wake up, if the small sounds of distress he was making were anything to go by. Otabek wondered what he would say to him, he wasn’t very good at social situations. Luckily, Otable was saved from an awkward conversation when a sleek, black car rolled up and an elderly man stepped out. The man stood as if he possessed the control of power over everything around him. His salt-and-pepper beard was neat and his grey hair was slicked back and underneath a newsboy cap. The cap looked awfully out of place with the man’s, obviously expensive and tailored, suit. He stepped forward, his shiny shoes clacking against the ground, echoing in the silence of the parking lot. The man’s eyes met Otabek’s and Otabek almost flinched at the light blue cruelty he saw. The colour was very different from the vibrant green that he had noticed Yuri’s eyes possessed. The man’s gaze shifted away from Otabek, to Yuri’s slowly waking body behind him, and he continued to charge forward to Yuri’s side. Otabek watched as Yuri woke up and smiled up at the man. “Grandpa, you came.” Yuri whispered, his voice a lot smoother now that it wasn’t hysterical. So, this was the grandfather Nikolai. “Of course I came Yuratchka.” Nikolai responded and Otabek was surprised to see the elder's face soften. Otabek turned around, feeling as if he was intruding on a private moment. He noticed that there were two other men waiting beside the car; one with blue- rimmed glasses and messy dark hair and the other with hair so light it looked silver and the same blue eyes as Nikolai. Otabek was going to step forward and introduced himself when he heard Yuri’s soft voice, “Mama and Papa didn’t.” Otabek’s heart clenched and he decided right then that he wanted to protect Yuri.   ***** Replacement ***** Chapter Summary Yuri wakes up again in a room and is pissed to find out what his grandfather has arranged. He was floating in nothing, the only sound that could be heard was his harsh breathing and a continuing popping sound, the one you hear in action movie when there’s a gun fight far away. The popping sound got loader with each one of Yuri’s breaths. Pop. Pop. Pop. BANG!   Yuri woke with a start. For a long minute, all he could hear was his racing heart beating. Then he became aware of the soft hum that encompassed the room he was in. Looking around he noticed he was no longer in a black abyss, but in fact he occupied sterile looking room with the dreary light of Russian winter filtering in through the semi-closed blinds; a private room in the Mafia’s infirmary. With consciousness came a pain and thirst so he moved his heavy head to the side, looking for someone to get him some water. Next to his bed, Grandfather was sitting there, dozing in his chair that was usually placed behind his office desk. “Nikolai?” Yuri whispered, his throat aching with the effort of those words.  Getting frustrated, he grumbled and forced his voice to become loader, “Jesus Christ, Nikolai wake up!” he snapped and the sound of his rough voice jerked his grandfather from his sleep, his sleepy eyes falling on the, now awake, Yuri. “Oh good, your awake.” “Can you get me some water.” He rasped, his throat felt like the cotton balls he uses to remove his nail polish. “Of course.” Nikolai said before standing up and disappearing through the bathroom door. He came back with the small glass that Yuri kept in the bathroom to wash his mouth out with. Taking the glass, he desperately chugged the water. Once he was finished, he turned back to his grandfather, “What the hell happened?” “You were the target of an assassination attempt.” “And Mila…?” “Dead.” A shock of pain went through him as his mind wandered, unable to remember anything that had happened at the mall. “Her body?” “There will be a memorial next week.” “Okay.” Yuri turned his head away and pretended that he didn’t want to cry. They sat there in silence for a few minutes until Nikolai broke it, “I’ve hired a new bodyguard.” His grandfather says and a spark of angry fire erupted in Yuri’s heart. “Seriously!? She just died and you’re already replacing her!” “I don’t have a choice Yuri, someone made an attempt on your life and you need to be as safe as you can be while we figure out who!” “I don’t care about the people who are trying to kill me, Mila is dead! My best friend is dead!” Yuri screamed as he threw his glass across the room with a CRASH. At this noise, a man walked into the room and Yuri eyes latched onto him. He was standing on top of a couple of stairs that lead into the room, making him seem taller than he actually was. The man had an undercut and his hair was tousled as if he had just been wearing a helmet. His skin was pale but had an olive undertone to it and his brown eyes narrowed as he saw the mess that Yuri had just made. He was obviously someone who took fitness seriously if his body was anything to go by and he was wearing a white sweater and grey scarf with well-worn blue jeans. The sight of him sparked Yuri’s memories. They had been in a parking lot. Yuri remembered the fear and the pain he felt, he remembered to horror over the fact that his friend was dead, that her blood was in his hair, on his skin, in his mouth. Yuri remembered not wanting to remember, he remembered the fear when he had heard a motorcycle, he remembered seeing the man that was currently looking at him, had stood in front of him with a stoic face as he completely lost control of all his emotions. “Is this who you hired to replace Mila, some emotionless freak!” Yuri screeched and swept his legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the throbbing pain in his leg as he stood up and charged over and stood at the bottom of the stairs. “Who the fuck do you think you are, hmm!?” Yuri yelled, “Do you think you can just barge in here like you know everything when Mila is dead and you’re here to replace her!” ‘I’m not trying to replace your friend, Mr Plisetsky.” Yuri, unsatisfied with the man’s emotionless responds turned his anger to his grandfather. “And YOU! You, fucking cowardly, little fucking old ma-.” “I’m not here to replace your friend, Mr Plisetsky.” Yuri turned around again to face the man, his new bodyguard. “Than what are you here for, Mr Stupid Fucking Bodyguard!” he yelled. “To protect you Mr Plisetsky.” The man’s calm responses pissed him off and he was not about to let this man come in and take over. “Who. Do. You. Think. You. Are.” He said, enunciating every word with anger. “Otabek Altin. Your new bodyguard.” At this Yuri rushed forward and pushed against Otabek’s chest. “I hate you! I hate you so fucking much!” “Why?” Otabek asks. He seemed so unaffected by Yuri’s words. “Because your replacing her and you have no damn right!” “I’m not replacing her. I’m picking up where she left off in ensuring your safety, something I’m sure your previous bodyguard would appreciate.” “Well she can’t appreciate it can she! She’s dead!” “Mr Plisetsky I understand how your feeling but you must realise that it’s not your grandfather’s – or my – fault that she is dead.” At the words, ‘I understand.’, Yuri was sent into a wild frenzy of anger and in the time it took Otabek to finish his sentence, Yuri already had a pillow in his hands and chucked it at Otabek, who simply stepped aside to dodge the flying assault. This, of course, only made Yuri angrier as he charged forward, clearing going to try and attack Otabek, only to trip on the edge of the first stair and topple down. Somehow, Otabek managed to move fast enough to catch his head, but Yuri hardly noticed because of the burning pain that had encompassed his leg. Clenching his teeth, Yuri was determined to bite through the pain. “You stupid boy!” Nikolai shouted as he surged forward. “Well you’re a stupid old man!” Yuri griped out as he grabbed Altin’s forearm and squeezed. “Mr Altin, carry Yuri over to his bed while I call the doctor.” A ‘Yes sir’ was all the warning Yuri got before he was forced to let go of Altin and jostled up into his arms, causing sharp spikes of pain from his wound. “Oww!” he screeched and the hands that had once been secured around his bodyguard’s arm, were now digging into his neck and shoulder. After an excruciating few steps, Yuri was placed on his bed and his let his arms flop to sides and clench his sheets instead. A few minutes later, a young woman with a white coat walked into the room and Yuri watched as Otabek left back to his station outside of his door. ***** Russian Mafia ***** Chapter Summary Otabek meets Victor and Yuuri and signs a contract. As Otabek waited for Nikolai to finish checking up on Yuri, who had passed out again after greeting his grandfather, the two men who were waiting by the car came forward. One had dark hair and one had blonde hair so light it looked silver. “Hello, my name is Victor Nikiforov.” The silver haired man said, then gesturing to the other, shorter and darker haired man he said, “And this is my partner, Yuuri Katsuki!” The other man – Yuuri – gave a small wave towards him before continuing to speak. “If you’re the guy that beat that man up behind you,” Yuuri said, pointing to the body of who Otabek had assumed was Yuri’s attacker, “Then we would like to offer you a job with our company.” “Well what a coincidence, I actually came here for a job interview but I think I missed it with everything that was going on.” Otabek replied. “Great!” the Victor said while bringing his hands together in a clap, “It’s a bodyguard position. You would be taking over from where Mr Plisetsky’s bodyguard – Mila - left off with her protection detail.” Otabek pondered this. He did have experience with martial arts and due to the neighbourhood, his family had recently been forced into occupying back in Kazakhstan, Otabek had taken it upon himself to learn how to use a gun so that was covered. And it would be better than whatever lousy job at the retail store he was interviewing for. “How much?” “$700 per day and if there is a problem that arises that will be more dangerous, that amount will rise to about $1000.” Otabek thought about how all that money would help his family, especially with how low the Kazakhstani tenge is compared to the Russian ruble, Otabek was very inclined to agree. “And of course, you will get your own rooms and meals supplied at the estate.” Yuuri continued. Otabek wasn’t going to miss out on this opportunity. If his family was able to have this type of cash flow, without the need to worry about food and rent for himself, his mother and sister would be living like queens. It was more than Otabek had ever dreamed of being able to supply his family with. “I’ll take it.” “Great!” Victor said, jumping forward in what would have been a hug if it wasn’t for the lightning fast hand that grabbed Victor’s collar. “Victor, we’ve talked about giving hugs.” Yuuri scolded. “Sorry.” Yuuri turned towards Otabek, “If you wouldn’t mind riding with us, or if you have an alternate mode of transportation, to follow us once we leave.” “Of course.” “Okay well I’m looking forward to working with you, Mr…” “Altin, Otabek Altin.” “Well Otabek Altin, I look forward to working with you.” Yuuri and Victtor were called over to were Nikolai was now cradling Yuri in his arms and Otabek got onto his bike preparing to follow them as they took off out of the parking lot.   The drive to their house was uneventful, only disrupted by a short trip to a firearms shops where Yuuri went in and came back out a few minutes later with a black, bulky duffle bag. Then they continued to drive and soon enough, they arrived on the outskirts of St Petersburg. Otabek followed them as they rolled through the gates of a huge mansion, stopping behind them in line of a huge driveway. The mansion was made of bricks and was surrounded by a lot of elegantly trimmed trees and crawling vines attached to the walls. The coned roofs looked a lot like the ones in old fairy tales Otabek read as a child. The whole area was isolated by trees from all sides except for the drive way. There were lots of windows but the one that stood out the most was a large convexing window that looked out over the front of the estate. From where Otabek was standing, he could see thick looking red curtains that were being held off to the side. Everything about the place reeked money. Otabek watched as Victor helped Nikolai to get Yuri out of the car. The young blonde’s hair was matted with blood and both Nikolai and Victor had tight, worried faces. Once they got Yuri out of the car and through the doors, Yuuri stepped out himself and Otabek saw a tiny ‘follow me’ gesture before he followed the Asian man through the big doors that a suited man was holding open for them. “This is the Plisetsky family estate and, as you can see, is fairly large, so I’ll give you a map once we reach my office.” Yuuri explained as they walked through the entrance way and up one of the two gliding stairs. When they turned down into a hallway, Yuuri continued talking, “I’m one in charge of security so I’ll be the person you take orders from, although expect orders from Victor, Nikolai, and of course, our young Yuri himself. Although, you don’t take orders from anyone else, in fact when it comes to matters of Yuri’s safety, you can instruct anyone to do anything and they will. Yuri takes priorioty here.” “He must be very important.” Otabek says. “Well yes.” Yuuri said before stopped in the middle of the hallway, looking at Otabek curiously over his shoulder before spining around and facing him head on. “As I’m sure you have picked up, Mr Altin, the Plisetsky family is very rich and important. Yuri would probably be the most important person in this building in Mr Nikolai Plisetsky eyes and its your job to keep him safe. Of course, there will be other people around to help you, but it will be primarily your job.” “May I ask you why Yuri is important?” “Well Mr Altin, once you sign your employment contract, you will be officially working for one of the biggest mafia organisations in the world; Solntsevskaya mafia. And Yuri is the young man that is set to inherit the business once his grandfather dies.” Otabek wasn’t that shocked at the family’s business, it wasn’t unusual to meet people who had ties to the mafia in Otabek’s old neighbourhood, but that didn’t stop him from feeling a sense of dread at the thought of working here. If he did anything wrong, these guys have so much power, they would be able to destroy him. However, considering how much money they are offering, Otabek was willing to take that risk. Yuuri seemed to be waiting for some shocked reaction and the man seemed pleased that Otabek kept a straight face as he answered with a soft, “Go on.” Yuuri started walking again and after a few seconds they reached a pair of doors. Yuuri opened to left one and gestured into a grand room that was less like an office and more like a luxurious suite. He led them to his desk and gestured for Otabek to sit in one of the very stuffed looking chairs before the man went and sat behind his desk. “You will be one of the higher up bodyguards and will even have a room away from the dorms, next to Yuri. You will also be gifted with numerous firearms, additional training, clothes, a car, numerous fake IDs and your own business bank card, which will have money separate from your salary.” “This bank card is not for your use, however. It is for Yuri’s penchant for shopping.” At this sentence, Otabek noticed a small, affectionate smile curve up Yuuri’s lips. “Your position won’t officially start for another few days while you undergo some tests and training, just making sure your up to the mafia’s standards, but you will have to spend a few hours every day at your post with another guard who will show you the ropes.” “Okay.” “Brilliant, I’ll just find the papers for you to sign and then I’ll show you your room and give you the map.” Otabek felt nervous about this job and thought that maybe the money wasn’t worth working for the mafia but when faced with the contract, Otabek barely hesitated before signing the document.   ***** First Few Days ***** Chapter Summary Otabek experiences the first few days of working for the mafia. Chapter Notes It's my birthday! Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me! My girlfriend is adorable, she even came over and dropped off a bag of chocolate, YUM! Hope you enjoy the story and Happy Belated Halloween to my lovely readers. After Otabek signed the papers for his employment, Yuuri had led him to his rooms. They were just as grand as the suite that they were previously in and Otabek took a moment to admire all the grand furnishings and homey colours. To his left, there was a large, empty fireplace that had a few chairs positioned in front of it. In front of him there was a desk and a few tablets with various weapons on it. This area was in front of a large window that had red curtains that were shut. To his right there was a large, stripped our poster bed with two nightstands on each side. Otabek remember stepping into his room and thinking of how this place had a hundred rooms that probably looked exactly like this one. How he had barely been able to afford an apartment slightly larger than this room for his family. But now, here he was, about to earn more than enough money to keep his family afloat in a nice neighbourhood back in Kazakhstan.   Otabek had settled into his room that night. Yuuri had allowed his to leave and get his stuff from the room he was staying in so that now the place was littered with a few of Otabek’s personal belongings. On the first day in the mafia, he was taken by a man named Georgi, out into the woods where he was assessed on his ability to get a bullseye with different types of guns. He almost hit the centre every time. By the time it was lunch, his hands and shoulder’s hurt from shooting and Georgi guaranteed him that he wouldn’t need any more lessons in shooting before telling him that after he finished his few hour post in front of Yuri’s infirmary room, he was free to do whatever for the rest of the day. So, he went and stood outside of the room until around two o’clock, only disrupted when the Russian had woken up and thrown something at the wall. Otabek learned that day that he was not welcomed by Yuri. On his second day, Georgi took him to his hand-to-hand combat assessment which he also passed, unsurprisingly. He had been taking martial arts classes since he was ten. He then continued to complete his post time in front of Yuri’s infirmary room, without any disruptiong this time, and complete the day by depositing his first week’s pay check into the bank. Yuuri had explained that they didn’t usually give the employees there money at the beginning of the week, but since Otabek had done so well in his hand-to-hand and shooting, Yuuri had decided to reward him. He sent about $4500 of the $4900 to his mother, determined that he would Skype her tomorrow. On the third day, Georgi took him to lessons on how to treat Yuri, going over the various rules of the mafia, going through the structure of the mafia, and teaching him anything else Georgi deemed as something Otabek would need to know. By the time he was finished, he was exhausted and barely managed to get through guarding Yuri’s door and quickly Skyping his sister and mother (which included many unanswered questions on how he got that much money in such a short time – he wasn’t going to tell them he worked for the mafia). The rest of his week was spent a lot like this, until Yuri had been deemed as healthy enough to move back into his room, the one the was across from Otabek’s. That’s when the trouble started.   Otabek had been Skyping his family and his sister was showing him her latest drawing when it happened. His door creaked open and Otabek looked up in time to see the sadness in Yuri's face before it was contorted with anger. “How dareyou!” he screamed, charging forward. Otabek managed a quick goodbye to his family before Yuri reached his bed. “You fucking piece of shit! Not-trying-to-replace-her my ass!” he yelled and Otabek stood up from where he was sitting at his desk towering over Yuri despite being slightly smaller than average himself. “I’m not trying to-” “YOU EVEN HAVE HER ROOM!” Well they hadn’t told him that. “I had no control over where I sleep, if you wish me to be moved somewhere else, take it up with Mr Katsuki or the elder Mr Plisetsky.” At this, Yuri just hit him in the chest and walked out of the room, slamming the door shut. After a few moments, Otabek heard crashing and ran into Yuri’s room, only to find a bunch of shattered glass against the far wall and Yuri himself collapsed on the ground, right hand to his chest and letting out heavy, ugly sobs. When Yuri noticed he was there, he screamed for Otabek to get ‘the fuck out’ before turning his body so that Otabek couldn’t see him. But it was too late, Otabek already saw the gushing blood coming from his hand. “I can’t leave Mr Plisetsky, you’re hurt.” “Fucking right I’m hurt, LEAVE ME ALONE!” “Not until I can bandage it up.” “I’ll do it myself.” “No you won’t.” Otabek said going into Yuri’s bathroom and grabbing the First Aid Kit under the sink. Walking back out, he found Yuri was standing up and was angrily tearing up a white shirt he had been wearing and wrapping it around his hand. Unwrapping the bloody fabric, Otabek used the things from the First Aid Kit to patch Yuri back up and, once he was done, carried a struggled and disgruntled Yuri back to his bed. Otabek refused to leave and refused to let Yuri get out of bed (despite the swearing and hissing and name calling that Yuri threw his way). Soon after the blonde started to ignore Otabek, Yuri feel asleep, letting out cute sighing noises from his mouth. Otabek stayed a few more minutes but when he was sure Yuri was asleep, he made his way back to his own room and quickly texted his mom an apology for the cut off Skype call and fell asleep. ***** Lets Go Shopping ***** Chapter Notes Hello, sorry I've been away. See the end of the chapter for more notes Yuri woke up to a throbbing hand and heart. Groaning he turned over in the bed and placed his injured hand on the pillow next to him. His mind wandered to the incident that had happened last night. God, it was so embarrassing! Yuri didn’t usually cry in front of people. Or at all. But between the pain in his leg and the grief of losing Mila, he had been overwhelmed. However, Yuri hadn’t cried since the incident with his parents and its not like he hadn’t lost other bodyguards before. It’s just… Mila was somehow different. He had never really had any friends but if he did, would Mila have been one of them? Yuri recalled last night, how he had decided that he would go and collect a few of his things that he had left in Mila’s old room. He remembered pushing open the door and going across the hall. Even though he had had every right to be there, it was his house after all (well his grandpa’s house, but that was besides the point) he felt as if he was a child again, sneaking out his window to go play in the gardens or ice skating in the winter over the frozen pond a little way from the house. He had rested his hand on the door and a wave of sadness rolled over Yuri, stinging his eyes and making him mad. He had pushed open the door and, instead of the empty bedroom he expected, there was the idiot bodyguard that Grandpa had hired. The guy was so stoic it made him angry. He had never managed to keep a straight face like that, no matter how many times he tried. And then he was also replacing Mila, which made him angrier. Yuri remembered how he had yelled and hit his bodyguard before storming out and hurting himself when throwing something against the wall. And then it all became to much. Yuri remembered how he seemingly lost control of any reactions and broke down into pathetic sobs. Plisetskys don’t sob. Sobbing was for babies and Yuri was not a baby. But still, he was curled up there crying and hating himself and hating Mila for going, when bodyguard-what’s-his-name came in and, despite his many protests, healed and carried him to his bed. Once in bed, Yuri had been overcome with the emotional exhaustion of the whole ordeal that he passed out. Now here he was, laying in bed. Today was going to be bad, he could already feel it. And with that new bodyguard it was going to be worse. Getting up, he headed towards his closet and walked in, switching on the lights. The whole room lit up, revealing rows of hung up clothing, racks of shoes, random purses and boxes of jewellery. Shifting through his clothes, picking up an especially skimpy shirt, he decided that today would be bad enough, so he might as well see if he can have a little fun. His bodyguard what’s-his-name wouldn’t stay employed for long if it was up to Yuri. He didn’t care whether he got transferred to a different part of the mafia, or he was coerced into silence while he left. As long as he was gone from Yuri’s life, the Russian would be happy. And to achieve this, Yuri would have to get onto the man’s nerves as much as he possibly could. That meant amplifying his flirty, bratty side, something he had always enjoyed. Throwing on his shirt, he reminded himself to throw the one he had ruined last night. Finishing off changing, he slipped on some cute ballerina shoes and walked out of his closet. He quickly finished getting ready for the day, which included giving up on braiding his hair half way through (that had always been something Mila did, and before Mila, his mother). He walked out of his room and down the hallway, knocking on Mila’s old door and jutting out his hip as he waited. Yuri heard a couple of footsteps from behind the door and sure enough, Otabek opened the door. His eyes trailed Yuri, up and down, before meeting Yuri’s gaze and, much to Yuri’s amusement, blushed. Not so stoic now are you. When Yuri saw Otabek’s eyes wandering the bit of midriff the was exposed thanks to his shirt, Yuri huffed and smiled. Batting his eyelashes, he exclaimed, “Oi, eyes up here, what’s-your-name!” Otabek looked startled, like he wasn’t aware that he had been staring, and blushed before clearing his throat and reintroducing himself, “Sorry Mr Plisetsky. And my name is Otabek Altin.” “Yeah, whatever. Let’s go get breakfast.” Leading his way down the hall, Yuri made sure the sashay his hips a little, just to fluster Otabek a little more.   Yuri changed his mind, today was going to be a great day! Yuri forgot what it was like to tease a bodyguard like this as Mila had long since grown used to it (and let’s not think of Mila, Yuri wanted it to be a good day), so it was nice to have some fresh meat. Yuri had been proud at his ability to drive away any number of bodyguards and after breakfast, Yuri had decided that he wanted to test his skills again. Going to the mall was always a good hazing for them and as shopping was also something of a stress reliever for him, it was a double win. “Otabek, get the car!” Yuri demanded as they were walking back to his room. “Pull it up to the front entrance and wait a while when I get ready, we’re going shopping.” Yuri heard Otabek reply with a, “Yes, Mr. Plisetsky.”, before he walked off. Yuri excitedly rushed into his room. He hadn’t been shopping since the incident, partially because he wasn’t allowed to leave the house but mainly because he could barely manage to himself to get out of his bed. Now his wound had closed enough that it wasn’t dangerous, and Grandpa had lifted his house arrest. Picking out his clothes was tough as he had to constantly push away any memories of Mila helping him. By the time he was stapling on his heels, his happy mood had considerably saddened. However, determined not to ruin his good day he forced a smile (even though no one was looking) and made his way over to his dressing table and started applying some makeup. Nothing major, just some winged eyeliner and mascara. But his mind flashed to all the times Mila taught him to apply makeup, laughing whenever his hand jerked in the wrong direction – destroying his work, causing his eyes to burn and for him to do a sloppier job than usual. By the time he was on his way to the waiting car, he was wondering if he still wanted to go out shopping. Was shopping enough to get his mind off of Mila, and if it was, wasn’t that a betrayal to Mila’s memory. Shouldn’t he be focusing all his energy on mourning his friend? Shaking his head, he cleared those thoughts and approached the car. Otabek opened the door for him and they were off. Chapter End Notes Remember to comment what OtaYuri oneshot that you would like!!! ***** It's Not Your Fault Yuri ***** They arrived at the mall. Yuri glanced out the window, where a snow instantly melted onto the glass, causing rivets of raindrops to slide down. In this case, the glass reflection showed both himself and his mood. Sighing he wondered what went wrong with today, he was so determined to make it a good day, despite the way it started, and now his enthusiasm was for nothing. Otabek pulled into a parking spot and got out of the driver’s seat, coming around to open the door for Yuri. The Russian must have let down his poker face (although he was told by numerous people – including Mila – that he didn’t have the capacity to have a poker face), as Otabek looked at him and hesitantly asked, “If it’s not out of my place, Mr Plisetsky…” Otabek paused for a moment, almost as if wondering if he should say anything, “Why are you so sad?” Yuri looked up at him. Until this moment, Yuri had not made intentional eye contact with Otabek – always staring at his straight nose (something Yuri envies, he has a little bump on his) or at one of his ears. Yuri wondered if he wanted to reply, if he should just leave it and go shopping. But something was nagging him. Yuri didn’t usually talk about his problems, instead keeping them bubbled up. But right now, with the guilt crushing him, his eyes burning and stomach flipping, he really had just had enough. Although Yuri knew that his fucking stupid bodyguard was not the person to talk to, nor did he want to (or need to) talk at all. But, Yuri was tired, he was disappointed, he was sad, and he felt like crying – fuck what was with the crying, he hadn’t cried this much in years – and it all came bubbling out. “I fucking miss Mila.” He barked, his eyes moving down to a spot on the ground as he crossed his arms defensively over his chest. “And I thought today was going to be a good fucking day but now it’s just so bloody shitty and all I want to do is go home.” Shifting his feet, Yuri felt his face flame in embarrassment. At Otabek’s silence he continued, “And it’s shitty ‘cuz she was my only friend that I’ve ever had – if you can even call her that – and she died because of me.” He shouted, throwing his hands and head up, looking at the roof of the parking lot. “She was there because of me, that monster killed her because of me… I just fucking hate how shitty everything is!” At this however, Otabek did comment. “Yuri.” He glanced at Otabek and then looked down at his feet. “Yuri this is notyour fault.” “Yes, it is, you don’t have to lie. I won’t fire you for saying the truth.” “Yuri, I know it may seem like your fault, but it isn’t.” Otabek continued, making Yuri feel sad, cornered and confronted. “Yes, it is!” He yelled, “And besides, how would you even know, you weren’t there until after it happened!” “I know because you would never have hurt your friend.” Otabek reasoned. “I enabled her to get hurt! She was my bodyguard!” he argued, turning his back on Otabek and glaring at the car parked in front of them. “She chose to be your bodyguard, it was optional. Did you force her into being your bodyguard?” “No.” “Then this was not your fault.” “Yes, it is, Otabek, I don’t know why you can’t see reason.” Yuri heard Otabek sigh from behind him after he said this and allowed a quick, curious glance over his shoulder. Otabek was pinching the top of his nose together while shaking his head at the ground. Yuri went back to glaring at the car and waited for one of them to break the silence. “When I was younger, around your age, my father died in store robbery.” Yuri scoffed, “If your trying to distract me from my own situation with some fucking sob story, it’s not going to work.” “Listen Yuri.” Sighing and rolling his eyes, Yuri turned to the side and leaned up against his car. “We were at a gas station and I offered to pour the tank if he went into pay for it. I didn’t pay much attention to the guy who drove up next to the store when my father walked in, figuring that the guy was just buying something from inside. So, I got into the car and fiddled on my phone, my sister Inkar was sending me photos of her drawings, and didn’t even notice when the guy pulled a gun, and in his panic, shot my dad in the chest before fleeing.” By now Yuri’s anger had settled into nervous energy; no one had ever told him their stories before. Never had someone truly trusted him enough to open up about a private part of their life. “I became the enabler that day, Yuri.” This shocked the boy, “How? You didn’t even do anything wrong.” “I became the enabler that day because I offered to do the gas instead of paying. Then I didn’t notice the car that pulled up. And finally, I focused on my phone instead of noticing what was happening inside the store.” “Those things are hardly your fault.” Yuri says, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. “Yes, and Mila being your bodyguard is hardly your fault either.” Otabek explained. “Do you get any choice as to who guards you?” “No, otherwise I wouldn’t even have a bodyguard.” “Then my point is correct.” Yuri bit down at his bottom lip, worrying it as he thought this through. The blame and guilt he felt towards Mila’s death was something he took within a stride. He accepted it and had started carving a new way around the painful thought of her. Yuri hadn’t even let himself conceive that possibility that he wasn’t to blame, because who else was there to take the guilty burden? The heavy weight from before now seemed to be easing off his shoulders, leaving behind the grief, and with nothing to focus on; no other emotion to drown it out. Not that the guilt was gone completely, but the grief became the main emotion as his mind let go of its tight hold on its guilty distraction, letting the pain and sadness of losing his friend overwhelm him – leaving him breathless and on the ground as he tried to calm his stomach. With his head between his thighs, he didn’t notice that Otabek had come to place a gentle and supporting hand on his shoulder – offering a silent comfort. “Its going to be alright Yuri.” They had stood there for a few minutes in complete silence, the only noise was the distant engines and their soft breathing. Once the silence became uncomfortable, Yuri stood back up and opened his car door. “I wanna go home instead.” Yuri saw Otabek nod from his peripheral vision before stepping in and slamming his door shut. Yuri spent the rest of the ride home pushing down his embarrassment and sorrow as he leaned his head aginst the window. The sun was peaking through the clouds. ***** Trust ***** Chapter Notes I added a little bit to the end of the chapter so if you've already read it before this chapter was posted, go read it to smooth down the time transition. Also, I think now that I have more free time, I'm going to throw the Sunday schedule out the door and update more frequently. Yuri got out of his car and walked up the steps. He decided that he wanted to go to his room and wallow the day away by not doing anything. Maybe he would finish that book he started a while ago? However, what stopped him was when he noticed that instead of putting away the car, Otabek asked another mafia member and followed him. It wasn’t particularly strange that he did this, as Otabek was his bodyguard after all, so Yuri wasn’t exactly sure why he noticed. He also noticed when Otabek asked him to wait in his room for him to return and then set off in the direction of Grandpa’s office. Yuri really hoped Otabek wasn’t doing what he thought his bodyguard was doing. On their way home from his fruitless shopping trip, Yuri had been contemplating some things. One of them being how Otabek had supported him and comforted him like no one had in a long time. It wasn’t like he didn’t have people who cared for him – he did – it’s just that Grandpa was always busy with the organisation and his parents and Mila were gone. And so, through their discussion, Yuri found that he had started to trust Otabek slightly. Not wholly; not as much as he trusted Mila, his parents or Grandpa, but it was a start. If Otabek did this, he wasn’t exactly sure if that trust would be ruined or not. So instead of staying in his room like Otabek asked, he snuck through a faster route to Grandpa’s office and lay in wait for the conversation that was about to happen. Soon enough, he heard Otabek’s footsteps coming up the hall and he pressed his body against the wall even more, holding his breath in anticipation. He was hiding around the corner and Yuri forgot how nerve- wracking this was, even though he had done it plenty as a kid in order to hear his parents and Grandpa’s conversations about him. He listened as Otabek rapped on the door and his Grandpa’s “Come in!”, before he leaned around the corner and watched Otabek walk in and close the door behind him. Yuri tiptoed out to the door and pressed his ear against the oak door. “Mr. Altin, what brings you here?” he heard Grandpa’s voice ask. “I’m concerned about your grandson, Mr Plisetsky.” Otabek stated. “I just took him out to the mall and we had a very emotional conversation in concerns to his previous bodyguard.” “Yes, Yuri was close to that young lady.” Grandpa said. “Well – if it’s not out of line for me to say this – I think you should speak to Yuri, sir.” Otabek proposed. “Why, was Yuri being inappropriate? God, I lecture him and punish him – the way he treats his bodyguards is downright disgusting,” Yuri’s heart hurt a little at that, he knew he could be crude, but he sometimes forgets how much Grandpa looks down on him because of it, “But it’s like he has no respect for me, especially after his parent’s deaths.” Yuri heard Grandpa sigh and he could just imagine him shaking his head. “No actually, he wasn’t being inappropriate – I think you should just ask him what’s wrong.” Otabek states, before saying, “Anyway, Mr. Plisetsky, I must be getting back to him now so if you wouldn’t mind…” “Yes, yes no problem. You can be on your way.” At this, Yuri hurried back to his hiding spot and listened as Otabek came out and closed to door. He let out an anxious breath and payed attention as Otabek’s footsteps began walking awa- No, Otabek was coming in this direction! In his panic, Yuri spun around looking for a hiding spot but wasn’t able to find one, so he was met with the image of a shocked Otabek. “Yuri, what are you doing out of your room?” He asked. Yuri noticed that one of his eyebrows was slightly raised, like a scolding parent. “What does it look like you idiot, spying on you!” Yuri exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air, “What? Did you think that you could tell me to stay in my room and I would actually do that – god Otabek, your stupider than you look.”   Otabek’s cheek muscle twitched and his eyebrows came together in a stern stare, one that Yuri had noticed he had given to other people who had annoyed the man. Yuri decided this was the time to make his exit and whirled around, determined to walk away. But he was stopped by a hand being placed on his shoulder. He jumped slightly and looked behind him. “Yuri, please understand why I did this. You need someone to talk to.” Otabek explained. “You could have been that someone I talked to!” Yuri yelled, wrenching his body away, only for Otabek to grab his wrist. Man, this guy was persistent. “You need someone to trust Yuri.” Yuri rolled his eyes and looked back at how, not only a few minutes ago, he had begun to trust Otabek; that their conversation had advanced their relationship faster than any other bodyguard relation. Even Mila hadn’t managed to break through him that fast. And maybe it was just coincidental. Yuri, as much as he hated to admit it, was very vulnerable in that moment at the mall. And, despite what he thought might have happened, Otabek didn’t ruin that trust that Yuri had felt when Otabek had told him about his father. “I trust you.” Yuri admitted, turning around to properly face Otabek, “Even though you ran and talked to my Grandpa.” Otabek looked surprised at this and he let go of Yuri’s wrist. “Well then your welcome to talk to me.” Otabek offered and Yuri nodded. “I know.” Yuri nodded, before hesitating a moment and looking down. “And – you’re welcome to talk to me as well… idiot” Otabek responded with an, “Okay.”, and Yuri turned back around and started walking back to his room, a small smile lighting up his face. ***** Otabek and Yuri - Beka and Yura ***** A week passed since the eavesdropping incident and Otabek had noticed that Yuri seemed to have calmed down in his attitude towards him. Otabek’s experiences with Yuri had started off with someone who was incredible angry at everyone, all the time. Now, Yuri had mellowed out. Of course, he still was angry but at least around Otabek he wasn’t yelling. The only thing that bothered him was that Yuri’s behavior towards him could be down right flirtatious. During his conversation with Mr. Plisetsky, or Grandpa as Yuri called him, the man had mention Yuri having inappropriate behavior. He just took that to mean that he insulted and put down his bodyguards, something Otabek could deal with, but no. When Mr. Plisetksy said this, he meant that Yuri was a flirt. Growing up, Otabek avoided people like they were the plague. He just didn’t feel comfortable around them, only really enjoying the company of his family. If he hadn’t been so desperate to support Ikar and his mother, Aisha, he might have even turned down he job offer as it wasn’t something he thought he would enjoy. Besides the occasional violent altercations (they used to live in a bad neighborhood) Otabek wouldn’t usual see anyone besides his family outside of his shitty job and the few courses he had started doing at the University. So, when Yuri went from angry to flirtatious, Otabek simply could not cope. It was all rather awkward. Yuri would make an advancement and Otabek just ignore it, partially because he doubted Mr. Plisetsky would appreciate him flirting back, and also because he didn’t know how to respond to half the stuff Yuri said. For example, this morning when he went to wake Yuri up, the door opened revealing a shirtless, bleary eyed Yuri, who’s golden hair was falling out of his ponytail, and the first thing the Russian said to him was, “Good morning gorgeous!”, before smirking and turning around to go get changed. And then, if this wasn’t bad enough, Yuri came out wearing a skimpy crop top and high waisted shorts. His hair had been flowing over his shoulders, reaching his midback. Then Yuri walked up towards him, kissed him on the cheek and said, “Do you like my outfit, Beka.”, before walking down the hall to get breakfast. Now they were sitting alone at the dining table and Yuri was eating plucked grapes from the bowl beside him. Otabek, technically, wasn’t allowed to sit down with Yuri as he had to be on guard at all times, but Yuri had assured him that there were other agents situated around the building and that nothing was going to happen. They had sat there for a few moments, just silently looking at each other, before Yuri broke the silence with a question, “Why don’t you flirt back, Beka?” Yuri had taken to calling him that ever since the outfit question and Otabek found that he didn’t mind. It was informal, but he had long since stopped calling Yuri Mr. Plisetsky, so he figured that it didn’t really matter. “I don’t think I’m allowed.” Otabek explained, causing Yuri to scoff. “Of course, you’re allowed, why wouldn’t you be?” he asked, rolling his eyes and picking up another grape.  “Because it’s unprofessional.” This caused Yuri to scoff again as he flung his feet onto the table. “Beka, we’re in the fucking mafia.” He laughed. “We’re part of organised crime, there is nothing professionalabout this life.” “Fine, Yura.” He said. Yuri had a name for him, so now he had one for Yuri. “Is that the best you got, Beka?” “Nope, I’m just getting started.   Yuri could not deny that he was enjoying himself. He knew it might have made things awkward between him and Otabek if he started flirting, but throughout the week he had taken that chance. Now it was paying off. Yuri never liked that strict, unpleasant atmosphere between bodyguards and him. It made for stilted conversations and boring mall visits. And that’s how it had been with Otabek before and since the mall incident. So, Yuri had decided to change that. At first it had been awkward when his advances weren’t met but now, they pass the time pleasantly teasing each other and enjoying each others company. Right now, they were sitting on Yuri’s bed and Otabek was braiding his hair. This was something that they had started when Otabek walked in on him frustrated after not being able to do his own hair and, since he had experience with his younger sister, offered to help. Yuri wasn’t going to lie and say that it wasn’t an incredibly soothing pastime. “Otabek, tell me about why you came to Russia.” Yuri asked, looking to pass time as they relaxed.  “Okay then.” Otabek said, “I have my mother, Aisha, and my little sister, Ikra. I took this job because of them. You see, my family was never really had any money, so we always moved around in the bad neighborhoods, and some of them were really bad, so my parents insisted that I got defense classes – they offered them cheap at the community centre. So, I did well in martial arts and at school and eventually I was a few weeks off graduating high school and had long since gained my black belt.” “But then my father died. Luckily, it was only a few more weeks until I finished high school and I had a scholarship lined up for one of the nearby universities, so all I needed to do was finish school and get a job at university. I also decided to gun lessons, just in case I needed to defend my mother and sister. My father had been the one who knew how to handle the gun and now that he was dead, we were vulnerable to all those lunatics living around us.”  “Anyway, thankfully, my family had enough money with what they saved up and with the life insurance of my father, that we were able to continue pay all our bills. But by the time I got half way through my first year of university, my mother became sick, and what money we were able to save up was spent on hospital bills.” “So, I decided to quit university and go to Russia, hoping for a better paying job than the crappy one that I had at the university. My father was Russian, so I was already fluent in the language. I was going to get a job at the mall that I found you at, and would have if the bodyguarding you didn’t have such a high salary. And that’s it.” They sat there in silence a little longer; Yuri wasn’t entirely sure what to say. He expected a happier story than that. Father dead, mother sick, no money? While Yuri could relate to the dead parents, but he didn’t really understand not having money, as there was never a time in his life where he went without. “That sucks.” Yuri said and they lapsed back into silence. ***** English Homework and Shakespeare ***** The weeks passes and, soon enough, just like Yuri’s anger, his flirting mellowed out. Together, Otabek and him shared bouts of comfortable silence, or lengthy conversations about whatever was on their minds. And during these few weeks, Yuri had been noticing Otabek more and more. Before he was just a bodyguard; someone to tease and criticise. Now, Otabek was his friend and, while Yuri didn’t have much experience in the department, the feelings he felt towards Otabek were strange. While they were similar to his feelings for Mila, there was a hint of something else. Something Yuri hadn’t really thought of until now. They were sitting in Yuri’s room. Otabek comfortable lounging on the loveseat in front of the fireplace, while Yuri hunched over his desk, pencil scribbling on some work his tutor had given to him. Yuri peeked a glace of him through from behind his shoulder, strands of his hair blocking his view. Otabek’s eyebrows were furrowed in concentration as he squinted at the paper. From where Yuri was sitting, he could see that the man was reading something in Kazakhstani. Yuri looked back at his work and let out a frustrated sigh, he hated English homework. Especially when he would rather be focusing on more entertaining matters. After a while passed in silence, Yuri finally finished his work. Stretching, he groaned as he stood up from his chair and made his way over to where Otabek was sitting. Flopping down he looked over at Otabek, who met his gaze. “You sure do love reading, don’t you Beka?” the Russian said. “Yes, it’s something I rather enjoy,” Humming, Yuri turned his eyes to the fire. He had learned that Otabek was an introverted person, something that Yuri wasn’t unfamiliar with. He himself found it exhausting dealing with people all day, the only alive exception being Otabek. Otabek was the exception to many things, his patience only being one of them. Turning back towards the reader, Yuri laid his head down and lazily watched as the firelight flickered cross Otabek’s caramel skin, leaving interesting patterns down his face. The man was so absorbed in his reading, Otabek’s warm eyes moving quickly across the page. His hair, usually gelled back into a severe undercut, was let loose and fell across his forehead. Otabek must of hit a good part in the book because Yuri noticed the flurry of movement as he subconsciously leaned forward and bit his full lip, clean teeth peeking through. Yuri felt something overcome him. Otabek was beautiful.     Otabek really liked this book. It was a classic love story, one of Shakespeare’s works and not something he would was likely to admit he reads. The only reason why he did so in front of Yuri was because it was in Kazakhstani, a language that he was sure the young Russian wasn’t fluent in. Otabek was in a really tense moment in the story and his was practically at the edge of the seat. His eyes flickered up for a moment, catching movement from the corner of his eye and noticed that Yuri had shifted closer from where he sat before, his head no longer against the back of the sofa. His faced was flushed and his eyes were flickering between different parts of Otabek’s face. Placing his book down, Otabek broke Yuri’s concentration and asked, “Are you okay, Yura?” Shaking his head slightly, Yuri sat up and whispered, “Yeah, I’m fine.” The atmosphere was awkward; Otabek was searching out the blonde’s eyes, and Yuri was regretting getting caught up in those unknown feelings. On an act of impulsive frustration, Otabek reached forward and pushed Yuri’s face until their eyes meet. “Yuri, what’s up?” Otabek asked, “That was really intense, is there something you needed to say?” Otabek felt even more frustrated when Yuri shook his head out of Otabek’s grip and stood up to pace. “I don’t know, Beka.” His foot falls were rhythmic. Thump, thump, thump. “I don’t know what’s with you, you give me this strange feeling.” Otabek stood up and tried to grab a hold of Yuri’s wrist. Thump, thump, thump. He thinks he knows what Yuri is talking about, he had been noticing a strange feeling as well. Well, it wasn’t strange, more unsettling than anything, something he hadn’t really felt since his father died and he took over the responsibilities of the household. Thump, thump, thump. “I-it’s… It’s this weird feeling in my stomach.” Yuri struggled, “Like I’m really nervous about something, like I’m nervous of you. O-or scaredof you.” Otabek felt his breath catch. No this isn’t what he felt towards Yuri. “But that’s ridiculous because you savedme from the god-awful man,” Yuri continued, “And it’s not like fear. I knowfear. Fear is when you stare down a gun barrel, fear is when your p-parents aren’t there anymore. Fear is something that I run away from.” Yuri stopped pacing. “But with you Otabek,” the way Yuri said this, his eyes seeking his out; his cheeks flushed, his breath barely above a whisper, like he is about to tell him a secret, “But with you, I look forward to it. I anticipate this not-fear you give me and I can’t help but wonder…” When Yuri stopped talking, his hand clasping his arm and his body language becoming more guarded, Otabek rushed forward and placed his hand on Yuri’s shoulder, desperate to make sure that Yuri opens up to him. Because he trusted Yuri more and more every day, and he wanted the Russian to feel the same way that he did about him. Both with trust and with the feelings that were becoming more apparent to Otabek. “You wonder what?” Otabek asks, eyes searching Yuri’s face for any indication as to his feelings. Looking up at the ceiling, as if to asking a higher being for help, Yuri’s eyes flickered back to Otabek’s. Otabek’s heart was slamming against his chest and suddenly it was really hot. “I wonder if this is like in those stupid fucking romance books that I found in your room.” The embarrassment of Yuri being able to actually read those books was drowned out by motion of Otabek leaning forward and planting a soft kiss on Yuri’s lips.
