Thom loves Colin. Jonny loves Thom. What a mess. Title is from a song by The Cure. Notes Okay so I should be working on the Gorillaz fic but this one just kinda accidentally happened. I originally wasn't gonna even post it, but why the hell not? It's finished, so I'll be able to stick to posting updates regularly. You wanted me to write the rest of the band, so here you go. Hope you like it. xx ***** Chapter 1 ***** Colin sat in the back of the classroom, passing notes with Thom. Between the notes and staring at the back of the head of his crush across the room, the lecture was useless. He couldn’t even remember which class he was in at this point. He leaned forward in his desk, watching his crush’s every move. He was either doodling or writing notes, whatever it was, he was very into it. He was hunched over his desk, looking squished and much too big for it. Colin had had a crush on Ed for the last two years. The moment he set eyes on him he knew. Everyone knew he was the most good looking guy at Abington, but it only drove Colin crazy. Colin couldn’t believe how lucky he was to be friends with Ed, to make music with him. Thom knew about his crush, though Colin would deny it till the day he died. Thankfully Thom never teased him in front of Ed, but it was just a matter of time before his big mouth got Colin in trouble. Colin was snapped out of his thoughts by Thom poking him in the arm with the folded note they had been passing back and forth. He unfolded it and read it: Stop staring you fuckin’ poof. He turned to Thom and glared, and was met with a cheeky grin. He blushed and grabbed his pencil to write some furious comeback, but he was at a loss. The bell rang just in time, so he balled up the note and shoved it in his pocket. As he gathered his things, Thom stood above him, leaning over his desk. “You ready for holiday?” he asked. Colin had completely forgotten about that. He would be able to go home to his mum and his little brother after classes today. He’d have a week to celebrate Christmas and do whatever he pleased. He smiled to himself. He’d be able to hang out with his mates and have band practice at someone’s house rather the stuffy music room at that school. Of course he was ready. “Yeah, I can’t wait to see Jonathan.” “Aw, isn’t that precious. Cozzie misses his little brother,” Thom teased. Colin stood up and swung his book bag over his shoulder. “Shut up, of course I do.” As they made their way out of the classroom, Ed caught up to them. “Two more classes!” He slapped them both on the shoulder. Thom beamed excitedly and Colin blushed. “I’ve written more songs for us to practice over break! You’ll love them!” Thom exclaimed. Ed ruffled Thom’s hair. “Yeah, hopefully. Colin, let’s walk,” he said, turning to him. Colin had forgotten he had this next class with Ed. He was never a fan of maths until he had the class with Ed, just the two of them. No Thom to distract him or embarrass him. “You love birds have fun!” Thom called as he walked away and out of sight. Colin’s cheeks barely had the chance to turn back to normal colour before they were red again. “You alright Cozzie? You look like you’re gonna pass out,” Ed said, throwing his arm around Colin’s shoulders and pulling him into him. Colin thought he might be right. “Just um.. excited for holiday, is all.” Nice save, Colin. “Yeah I bet you can’t wait to see Jonny. How’s he been?” Colin calmed down and smiled. Ed understood how much he loved his little brother and didn’t tease him about it, and he loved that about him, among other things. “He’s been well. I guess he’s gotten pretty good at guitar.” “As good as me?” Ed winked. Colin swooned. “Better,” he teased, giving Ed his most charming smile. “Probably,” Ed chuckled. “I mean, I don’t know…” Colin said awkwardly. Ed didn’t say anything as they reached the classroom and sat down next to each other. Ed knew Colin was just teasing him but Colin felt bad about it. He almost wished Ed was cocky like Thom and would defend himself, but then again his humility was another thing he liked about him. “Will your sister be home for the holiday?” Ed asked, sounding far too eager. Colin knew Ed thought his sister was attractive, and it pissed him off to no end. Thankfully she thought all his friends were little twerps and never gave Ed the time of day. “I don’t know… probably,” Colin said in his most unenthusiastic tone. Ed studied him, his face twisting into a look of confusion and slight concern. He knew he was protective of Jonny, but of her too? “Sorry, I was just asking. She doesn’t like me anyway, it doesn’t matter.” “No no it’s okay. I just… ya know. You can do better.” Colin gave him a fake smile. Ed smiled at him. Colin was always so sweet to him. He wanted to show Colin how much he appreciated his kindness and how much he loved him but he was never sure exactly how. He settled back in his seat before the bell rang signalling the beginning of class. ——— Twenty minutes into the lecture and Ed was bored out of his mind. He hadn’t a clue what the teacher was on about, his notes made no sense, every problem he’d tried to work on out paper came up with the wrong answer. He sighed, defeated, and pulled out a piece of notebook paper to write Colin a note. He watched Colin for a moment, he seemed as if he was paying attention and actually soaking up some information, but he knew him better than that. He wrote his note and folded the paper neatly, drawing a tiny heart on it before passing it to Colin. He watched as he looked at the heart, blushed, and unfolded the note. Have you any idea what this tosser is on about? Colin smiled and wrote back. Not a clue, mate. Ed thought for a moment, knowing what he wanted to ask Colin but unsure if it was appropriate. But he had to say something, so he went for it. What are you doing tomorrow? Probably catching up with Jonathan, why? Do you mind if I stop by? I’m going to be bored out of my mind all week, I need you. Sure. I bet Jonathan would love to see you. I’d rather hang out with you. But before Ed could pass the note back, the bell rang and class was over. As the two boys stood up to leave class, he decided to slip the note to Colin anyway. Colin looked up at him confused, so he shrugged and smiled at him. “See you after class Cozzie.” “Yeah, see you.” ——— Colin forgot about the note in his pocket until he got back to his room and plopped down on his bed. Thom hadn’t gotten back from class yet. He unfolded the note and read the last line. I’d rather hang out with you. He let out an involuntary squeak and blushed, holding the note to his chest and grinning wide. Ed wanted to hang out with him. Just him. He wondered if he’d asked anyone else if he could come over during holiday. Probably, but he didn’t want to think about that right now. It would be just him and Ed alone. He was too excited to be nervous. Thom burst through the door and tossed his things onto his bed. “Mr. Snyder is a prick,” he said to no one in particular. He was red in the face. Colin opened his mouth to say something when Thom turned to him. “What are you all blushing about? Is that a love note from Ed?” he said, furrowing his brow. Colin shoved the note between his legs. “Shut up Thom.” Shit, he was being too obvious. Thom perked up. “It is isn’t it? Oh my god, you are such a fucking poof. What’s it say?” Thom reached for the note but Colin shoved it further in his crotch. “Why are you hiding it there? Is it because you want me to grab it? ‘Cause I will, I don’t care how gay you are.” “Jesus Thom, leave me alone.” “Tell me what the note says and I will.” “We’re just talking about hanging out during holiday, that’s all.” “And I’m not invited?” “No, you’re not.” Thom seemed genuinely offended. He went from a pout to a look of anger, turning red again. “Fine, have your gay fucking date.” “What is with you, Thom?” “Nothing, I’m just teasing you. Lighten up.” ——— As soon as Colin walked in the door to his home, his brother was on him — practically tackling him to the floor and leaving wet kisses all over his face. Colin giggled and hugged him as tight as he could. “Cozzie! I missed you so much! We’re gonna spend the whole week together!” “I missed you too love, and yes, of course we are. Let me get settled and you can catch me up on everything you’ve been up to since I’ve been at school.” Colin went upstairs to his and his brother’s room, Jonny following him. His bed was neatly made and his corner of the room untouched, Jonny always respectful of his things. He put down his suitcase and bass guitar and sat on his bed, running his fingers through his hair. Jonny looked at him expectantly for a moment. “Can I show you some stuff I’ve learned on guitar while you unpack?” He looked so hopeful and eager. “Yes, of course.” Jonny grinned wide and scrambled to get his guitar around his neck and plugged into the amp. As he tuned it and strummed a few notes, Colin started unpacking. He put some clothes in his closet as he listened intently to his brother’s playing. He really had gotten quite good — Colin was impressed. He sat back on the bed and watched him play. He still had some more unpacking to do but it could wait. Jonny was hunched over his guitar, sticking his tongue out in concentration. Colin thought he really had gotten better than Ed. Just like that, his mind was distracted by Ed again. He had to remember to ask his mum if he could come over tomorrow. He knew she’d say yes. Jonny stopped playing and snapped Colin out of his thoughts. He stood up and clapped, hugging his brother. “That was amazing Jonathan! You’re even better than Ed now!” Jonny’s eyes grew wide at the comparison. “Nu-uh… you really think so?” “I really do. Maybe you can show off for him tomorrow, I’m gonna ask mum if he can come over.” Jonny turned red and looked down at his hands, fiddling with his guitar. “Don’t be nervous, you don’t have to if you’re not ready. But I think he’d be really impressed,” Colin reassured him. Jonny looked at him and smiled. “C’mon, let’s have dinner and you can ask mum about Ed. You haven’t seen Susan yet either.” “Oh, she’s here?” “Yeah, she’s been home from uni for a whole week already! She gets two weeks off!” “What? That’s not fair!” “I know!” Jonny said, giggling and putting his guitar away. ——— That night Colin lied on his bed, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought. Only his brother’s bedside lamp illuminated the room. Jonny’s nose was buried in a book, but he had been watching Colin out of the corner of his eye. Colin rolled over to face his brother, watching him in silence. Jonny put his book down. “What?” Jonny asked, wondering why his brother was staring at him. “I’m in love, Jonathan.” Jonny smiled with all his teeth and jumped off his bed, hurrying over to Colin’s. He sat next to Colin on the bed with his knees pulled up to his chest, holding his legs. He was grinning with excitement. “That’s wonderful Cozzie! Who is it?” “It’s not wonderful, Jonathan, it sucks. It’s someone from school.” “So it’s a boy?” Jonny pursed his lips. “Why does it suck?” Colin rolled over and sat up, looking at Jonny like he was about to cry. “He’ll never love me back.” “How do you know?” “We’re just friends, I just know. “Have you told him?” “Of course not!” “Well why not?” “If he knew, he wouldn’t be my friend anymore.” “Yeah, because he would be your boyfriend.” Colin smiled at his baby brother’s innocence. “No, he wouldn’t. He’d probably beat me up for liking him like that.” “But how do you know?” Colin sighed. Jonny had a point. “I don’t… know.” “Exactly. So you should tell him!” Colin ruffled Jonny’s hair and kissed him on the cheek. “You’re sweet, Jonathan.” “I am?” “Yeah. Now get out, I’m going to bed.” Jonny gave Colin a kiss back and hopped off the bed, settling into his own bed and turning the lamp off. Colin got comfortable and thought about what his brother had said. Maybe he should just tell Ed how he felt. But there was no way Ed had the same feelings about him, so what would be the point? It would only create an awkwardness between them. Colin liked the relationship they had now. It was good enough to just be his friend if there was no hope of being more, which he knew there wasn’t. ***** Chapter 2 ***** Chapter Summary Things start to get heavy. The next day Colin was a nervous wreck. Jonny could tell something was up and kept questioning him about it, but he insisted he was fine. What would he and Ed even do together? They could make music, listen to music, chat, then what? Was he planning on spending the night? Where would he sleep? In Colin’s bed? No he was much too big for that. Colin paced around his room, pretending to be listening to Jonny’s guitar playing, but he couldn’t focus on the music. His mind was on impressing Ed. “Jonathan, do you think this outfit is okay?” he said suddenly. Jonny looked up and blinked a few times. “Yeah… I guess. What’s it matter?” “Well Ed doesn’t usually see me out of my school uniform and… what do you think he’ll be wearing?” “Who… cares?” “You’re right, you’re right. It doesn’t matter.” Jonny smirked at him. Yeah, something was up. Suddenly they heard a knock on the door from downstairs. Jonny glanced at Colin who jumped at the sound. “I’ll get it!” he shouted, running downstairs. He swung the door open. “Ed!” “Cozzieee!” Ed said as if he hadn’t seen Colin in years. He gave him a big bear hug and kissed him on the head. Colin blushed every shade of red. Why was Ed being so nice to him? “Come up to my room, Jonathan is—“ “Ed!” Jonny came seemingly out of nowhere, pouncing on Ed and nearly knocking him over. “Hey little buddy, how’ve you been?” Ed said, hugging him back. “Good, Colin says I’m better than you at guitar now.” “Is that right?” he said, eyeing Colin with a smirk. “Well let’s see it then.” Jonny bolted up the stairs expecting them to follow him. “Sorry, he’s a bit… enthusiastic. He really likes you,” Colin apologised. “I think it’s endearing. After you,” Ed said gesturing toward the staircase. When they got to Colin and Jonny’s room, Jonny was already set up with his guitar, waiting eagerly on his bed. Ed took the opportunity to sprawl out on Colin’s bed, taking up most of it, as he did. Colin found a corner of the bed to sit on and stared at him for a moment before turning to Jonny. “Okay Ed, pay attention.” Ed smiled and Jonny began playing. He was hunched over and playing his guitar like he wanted to destroy it. Ed’s eyes grew wide. Colin could tell he was impressed, as he was watching him, not Jonny. “Well?” Jonny asked when he finished playing. “You should play lead in our band,” Ed said casually. “What?” Jonny’s eyes were wide and his jaw slack. “Really? You think I’m that good?” “Yeah, I’d rather play rhythm anyway. We should talk to Thom about it,” Ed said, turning to Colin. Colin was shaken out of his stupor. “Yeah… yeah! That’s what I’ve been saying! Jonathan’s really good, isn’t he?” “Pretty awesome,” Ed was staring daggers at Colin. “I’m gonna… go downstairs and see what mum’s making for dinner…” Jonny said, something starting to click in his brain. He snuck out the door and closed it gently behind him, wondering if the two had even noticed he left. “So.. uhh… what do you wanna do today?” Colin said, looking around the room for something to stare at besides Ed’s beautiful blue eyes. “I dunno,” Ed scooted so he was sitting up next to Colin on the bed, their shoulders touching, “I was hoping to just chat with you and stuff…” “Oh… about what?” Colin was sweating bullets. “Have you been okay lately?” “Fine,” Colin stared at the wall in front of him, feeling Ed’s breath on his ear and willing his boner away with all his might. “Okay… well, I wanted to tell you, I think you’re my best mate. You’re always so nice to me and I was hoping we could hang out a lot during break. Is that okay?” “Oh… thanks. Best friend, yeah, you’re mine too,” Colin couldn’t breathe. He was way too physically close to Ed. Seemingly out of nowhere, Ed leaned forward and kissed Colin on the cheek. It was quick, barely touching him, but Colin could feel his warmth as he did. It was too much. “I have to go to the bathroom,” Colin said quickly. This boner was not going to let up and he wasn’t going to ruin Ed being here, in his bed, with him. Ed knew he had done something wrong. He wasn’t Colin’s best friend, he could tell. Colin was just a nice guy, he wasn’t anyone special to him. He probably thought he was gay for kissing him. He just didn’t know how to show him how much he appreciated him. “Maybe I should just go home.” Ed said looking away from Colin. “No!” Colin grabbed his hand, “I mean… please stay, I wanna hang out. You can spend the night if you want,” Colin spoke too soon, what was he thinking? Ed’s face softened into a smile. “Yeah… I’d like that.” “Great! Now um… I’ll be right back.” Colin walked awkwardly to the bathroom, Ed raising an eyebrow at him. Maybe he had the shits. Ed lied down on Colin’s bed. He felt more at home in the Greenwoods’ house than at his own house. He wished he could stay there, with Colin, forever. ——— Colin returned, looking a bit frazzled. “Are you okay? You took forever,” Ed asked. “Fine.” “You got the shits?” “What? No! Scoot over.” Colin squeezed his way back onto the bed, Ed barely moving an inch. Colin sighed, “this bed isn’t big enough for both of us, Ed.” “Sure it is,” Ed, said, rolling over to face Colin. Colin was curled up with his knees to his chest, while Ed was sprawled out comfortably. Ed smiled up at him, curling up at his side. Colin’s breath hitched as he felt Ed’s breath on his arm. Colin moved his arm away to hold himself. This was torture. “Sorry if I was um… weird earlier. You really are my best mate.” “I think you like Thom more,” Ed said with a wink. “Nah, Thom’s annoying.” “Sure is,” Ed said, pressing his forehead to Colin’s ribs and closing his eyes, sighing. “You’re… awfully close.” Colin couldn’t take it anymore. “So?” Well shit, if Ed was going to be comfortable cuddling up to him then he could take his chances and it wouldn’t be weird, right? Sure. Colin put his hand in Ed’s hair and played with it, rubbing his head and running his fingers through it. Colin smiled down at him, admiring how angelic he looked. They sat in silence for a moment, only Ed’s breathing and Colin’s racing thoughts filling the room. He briefly wondered if Ed could read his thoughts. He hoped not. “Can I sleep here tonight?” Ed said suddenly, his eyes still closed. “I already said you can stay the night.” “No I mean, in your bed.” Colin’s breath hitched and he coughed. “You okay?” “Both of us won’t fit. Especially with the way you sleep.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You flail about all night, I’ve seen you!” “If I hold still can I stay?” “We still won’t fit.” “If we spoon we will.” Colin’s head was screaming. “Why do you want to sleep here all of the sudden?” Ed sat up and looked Colin dead in the eye. He looked like he was about to cry. “You make me feel safe, okay? It’s not a gay thing so don’t think that.” He was on the defensive. “Hey hey,” Colin wanted to comfort Ed but he wasn’t sure how. He touched his knee and rubbed it with his thumb. Awkward, but better than nothing. “I get it. What’s going on at home?” “Shit I don’t wanna talk about.” “That’s okay,” Colin squeezed his knee, “you can sleep here if you want.” Ed kissed his cheek again, quick, chaste, barely grazing his cheek with his lips. “Thanks Cozzie.” Colin blushed and smiled at him. He wasn’t moving his face away from him, despite the kiss being over. Colin swallowed dryly. “W-we should um.. get some fresh air.” “Okay.” They made their way downstairs and invited Jonny, who was curled up on the sofa with a book. The boys made their way to the woods behind the Greenwoods’ house, Colin and Jonny chatting away and Ed mostly listening intently. Jonny eventually went ahead of them, wandering curiously through the woods. Colin just wanted to get some distance between himself and Ed and clear his head, but between looking out for his brother and being alone with Ed once more, he found it impossible. They came upon a particularly crowded part of the woods, surrounded by tree branches and thorns and walking on uneven ground. Jonny ducked and weaved through it easily, but Colin and Ed struggled. Ed was much too tall and Colin was much too clumsy. “Hurry up guys!” Jonny called from somewhere ahead of them. “Slow down Jonathan! If you get lost in here mum will have my head!” Ed giggled. “C’mon Cozzie,” he held out his hand for Colin to take it, and he reluctantly did. Ed held branches above his head and let him pass through, catching him around the waist when he tripped, Colin blushing the entire time. It was a chilly winter day, but Colin was sweating. As they finally made it out of the brush, they came to a clearing surrounded by trees, but spacious and clear. “Fucking finally,” Jonny exclaimed, as if he’d been waiting more than a few minutes. “Don’t swear, Jonathan,” Colin said, glaring at his little brother. Ed couldn’t help but giggle at them. “You’re not mum,” Jonny said, sticking his tongue out. “I am when she’s not around.” “No, Susan is.” Colin rolled his eyes. “How is she, anyway?” Ed piped up. Jonny just had to bring up Ed’s little crush. Colin quickly let go of his hand and marched past both of them. “Who cares, she’s been cooped up in her room since I got here. She didn’t even care that she hasn’t seen me in months.” Ed picked up his pace to catch up with him. Jonny walked behind them. “Hey… I’m sorry,” Ed shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked with Colin. “It’s okay… you didn’t do anything wrong.” “I mean, I’m sorry your sister kind of sucks.” It’s fine… I just miss when she, y’know, still liked me.” “She just thinks she’s too cool for you now that she’s twenty-something. She’ll get over it.” “Yeah, you’re right,” Colin finally looked at him with a smile, “thanks Ed.” Ed put his arm around Colin and pulled him closer, giving him a kiss on the temple. “You guys are cute!” Jonny shouted from behind them. “Piss off, Jonathan!” Colin called back, turning red once more. “Aren’t we, though?” Ed yelled back, turning around to look at Jonny, who was smiling slyly. “Shut up Ed,” Colin whispered. “What’s with all the kisses lately?” “I can’t kiss my best friend?” Ed said, hurt. He moved his arm from around Colin and put his hand back in his pocket. “Aw, Ed. No, I like it. I was just asking,” Colin linked his arm with Ed’s. “I like it too.” “Guys I’m cold!” Jonny said from behind them. “We’ll be out of the woods in a minute, then we can take the footpath around back home!” Colin called back. Jonny caught up with them, and linked his arm with Colin’s. ——— After dinner, the boys got ready for bed. Jonny curled up in his bed, looking at the other two expectantly. Colin was lying on his back, uncomfortably staring at the ceiling. Ed had his head propped up in his hand, watching Colin try to catch his breath. “Are you sure you’ll both fit in there?” Jonny questioned, innocently. “We’ll be fine,” Ed said with a sly smile, sliding his arm around Colin’s waist under the blankets where Jonny couldn’t see. Colin shivered at his touch. “You okay?” Ed whispered in his ear. Colin nodded awkwardly, but Ed could see how he fidgeted when he felt his breath in his ear. He sighed and rolled over away from Colin, settling into the mattress. “G’night guys.” Jonny frowned and looked at Colin, hoping to stay up late with his friends, but that wasn’t happening tonight. “Goodnight,” he said, turning his bedside lamp off and rolling over to face the wall. Jonny soon drifted to sleep, while Colin and Ed lied there awkwardly, their minds racing. Ed was being so sweet to him today Colin wasn’t sure what to think. He’d told him not to think anything gay, but who is that affectionate with someone who is “just their mate?” He wanted to tell him everything, in case he felt the same way, but what if he didn’t? What if he was just going through a hard time with his home life and just needed a friend? If Colin confessed his feelings he’d ruin everything, Ed would never trust him again. He’d never be this close to him again. Ed felt awkward, and like he should get out of Colin’s bed and just go home. Colin didn’t want him there. He was acting on impulse with Colin lately, and he didn’t know why all he wanted to do was touch him and kiss him and be close to him. Colin probably thought he was gay and hated him for it. He’d never fancied a boy before, so he couldn’t be gay. He just wanted to be close to his best friend, and that wasn’t gay, was it? Before Ed could collect his thoughts, he felt Colin roll over and slide an arm around his waist. He pressed up against his back and held onto him like his life depended on it. Ed could feel Colin's heart racing on his back, and he wasn’t sure how to interpret that. His heart was racing too, and he wanted to show Colin. He took Colin’s hand and held it to his chest for a moment. Once he could feel that Ed’s heart was moving just as fast as his own, he squeezed him tighter and left feverish, desperate kisses all over his shoulder blades. Ed rolled over to face him, wrapping his arms around his waist and staring at him, trying to see him through the light from the streetlights in the window. “Cozzie…” Ed whispered, pressing his forehead to Colin’s. “Ed?” “I think I love you but I’m not sure.” Without thinking, Colin kissed him. A quick, awkward, closed-mouth kiss. Chapped lips barely touching, briefly grazing across each other. Colin pulled back as quickly and he’d leaned forward, eyes wide, staring up at Ed, praying Ed wouldn’t wake up the whole house by screaming about how gay Colin was. Ed stared at Colin for a moment, trying to process what had happened. His expression soon softened into a wide grin, and he leaned in for another kiss. This time it lasted a bit longer. It was a big too eager, teeth clashing and lips nearly bruising. Ed pulled away, embarrassed, not wanting to look directly at Colin. He took Colin’s head and pulled it into his chest, leaving small kisses in his hair. Colin started giggling and it made Ed giggle too. “What the hell are you guys laughing about?” Jonny suddenly said from the other side of the room. This only sent the two boys into a louder fit of laughter, feeling as though they’d been caught redhanded. Suddenly a pillow came flying through the air, landing on both of them with a soft thump. “I’m trying to sleep,” Jonny said, muffled by his own blankets and pillows. “Sorry Jon,” Ed apologised, his face still buried in Colin’s hair. “Don’t throw things Jonathan!” But Jonny didn’t hear Colin, for his face was buried in Ed’s chest. The three boys fell asleep like that, Colin and Ed wrapped up in each other, and Jonny in a sour mood. ——— The boys were still dead asleep the next morning when the bedroom door creaked open. Susan’s first sight was Colin and Ed pressed up against each other, cozy and warm beneath the blankets. “Oh Colin, I didn’t know ya had a boyfriend,” she teased. “Shut up Susan,” Colin said, eyes still closed and face pressed firmly against Ed’s chest. Ed opened his eyes and raised his head, giving Susan’s annoyed expression a sleepy smile. “Hi Susan.” “Hello Ed. Mum wants you lot to come downstairs for breakfast,” she turned to Jonny, “you too Jonathan.” He was still pretending to be asleep, but he groaned at the sound of his name. She rolled her eyes and left, closing the door behind her. Ed rolled onto his back and held Colin close, looking down at him adoringly. Jonny was the first one up, sitting up and throwing his legs over the side of the bed, rubbing his eyes. He caught Ed’s eyes and glanced down at Colin, smiling at the sight. “Good morning guys.” “Morning Jon,” Ed said, looking at him sleepily. Colin grumbled something incoherent from beneath him. Jonny got out of his bed and made his way over to Colin’s, sitting on his knees at the foot of it. Ed extended an arm to him, inviting him to cuddle up with them. He crawled on top of Ed, and plopped his face down onto his chest, looking at Colin with a cheeky grin. He opened one of Colin’s eyes with his fingers and Colin immediately pulled away, making an irritated face. “Why are you in my bed?” Colin asked, trying not to be too annoyed with him. Jonny ignored the question. “Are you and Ed boyfriends now?” “What?” “Susan said.” “Shut up Jonathan.” “Okay.” He crawled off Ed and stood up. “I’m gonna go get breakfast.” Jonny left them still snuggled up in bed. Colin shoved his face into Ed’s chest, closing his eyes once more. “We gotta get up Cozzie,” Ed said softly. “Ugh.” “I know.” But Colin didn’t move. Ed scooted so he was face to face with Colin. He kissed him, small and quick and awkward. Colin smiled, but still didn’t open his eyes, so Ed kissed him again, and again, leaving a series of quick pecks on his lips, growing less awkward with every kiss. Colin’s eyes flew open as he was sent into a fit of giggles. “Okay okay I’m up!” he squealed. He looked at Ed for a moment, their smiles mirroring each other. “I wanna stay here forever, but I’m also hungry, so get up.” “Fine,” Colin grumbled. ——— After breakfast, Thom called. Ed answered. “What’s up Thommy?” “Ed?” “Yep.” “What are you doing answering Colin’s phone?” “Obviously I’m at his house.” “Why?” “Um… hanging out with my mate?” “Right well… meet at Phil’s for band practice in two hours, okay?” “Alright. Hey — can we bring Jonny?” “Ugh, why?” “You’ve gotta hear him play. I think he should join the band and play lead.” “Are you high?” “No, I’m serious. You just, gotta hear him, okay? We’re bringing him.” “Whatever. Two hours.” “Got it.” Thom hung up rather quickly. He sounded irritated. Ed relayed the information to Colin, informing Jonny he’d be joining them today. Jonny’s heart did a backflip. He was so excited, he talked and asked questions about the band for the entirety of the two hours. ——— Ed knocked on Phil’s door, and Thom answered rather quickly. He eyed the three boys with a bored expression, and without a word lead them to Phil’s basement. Colin’s eyes met Ed’s and their faces read the same question: What’s up with Thom? Jonny was too excited to notice. Phil greeted them excitedly, and they set up and played through a few old songs, then started working on a new one Thom had just written. Jonny watched and listened patiently, waiting for his time to shine. His heart was racing and his palms were sweaty. “Alright kid, you’re up,” Thom said, looking at Jonny with that same bored expression. Jonny couldn’t hide his grin as he stood up and set up his guitar. He looked up at all of his brother’s friends staring at him. Thom already looked unimpressed; it made him even more nervous. Then he caught Colin’s expression, he was smiling at him sweetly, his face telling him not to be nervous and that he’d do great. Jonny took a deep breath and began playing. He went through some random solos, something he’d written, and even a few walls of sound he’d heard Ed play before. He finished and looked up, pushing the hair out of his eyes. He bit his lip, looking around the room. Everyone was smiling at him, especially Colin. He turned to Thom, hoping most to impress him. Thom was looking at him with a smirk. Jonny blushed. “You Greenwoods are somethin’ else,” Thom said, crossing his arms, “You’re in, kid.” Jonny squeaked and Colin got up and ran over to him, taking his guitar off him and giving him a hug big enough to lift him off the ground. “I told you,” he whispered in his ear. ——— After practice, Phil pulled out a case of beer for everyone. Being the only one old enough to drink, he always provided the booze. Jonny awkwardly declined. Colin didn’t want his baby brother drinking anyway. They sat in a circle in the basement, Colin and Ed on an old mattress on the floor, Colin scooting up close enough to Ed that their legs touched. Jonny was next to Colin, curled up into himself, Phil in a chair and Thom sprawled out in a beanbag chair next to him. Thom eyed Colin and Ed and took a sip of his beer. Ed caught him and raised an eyebrow at him, making him quickly look away. Phil lead the conversation as the case of beer dwindled down. Thom’s focus was on Colin and Ed, catching every blush and glance and knowing smirk. Once the beer was depleted, Phil admitted he had more in the fridge upstairs. Colin offered to go get it, Thom immediately offering to help. He glared at Ed as he got up and followed Colin, Ed meeting his expression with one of confusion. Colin bounced up the stairs, Thom behind him, and went into the kitchen, swinging the refrigerator door open and rummaging through its contents. Thom watched him, arms crossed. “You and Ed are awfully close tonight,” he commented. Colin stopped, blushing. “Yeah?” “Yeah, are you guys finally dating or what?” Colin pulled his head out of the fridge and turned to Thom, smirking. “So what if we are?” Thom looked at him with a face of disgust. Colin’s smirk turned into a look of confusion and defensiveness. “What the hell is your problem? When I told you I liked boys you were totally cool with it, what changed?” “It’s not that, I don’t care if you like boys.” “Then what is it? Do you hate Ed suddenly?” “Kind of.” “What? Why?” Thom sighed and walked towards Colin, Colin bracing for impact. Thom delicately grabbed his wrist, reached up, and kissed him on the corner of his mouth. Their lips nearly touched. Thom pulled away and looked at him, waiting for a reaction. Colin touched his mouth where Thom had kissed him, realisation of what he meant by that coming to him. “Shit, Thom.” “Yeah.” “I’m sorry… I didn’t know.” “Well now you do.” Colin opened his mouth to say something, he wasn’t sure what, but Thom stopped him. “Don’t worry about it, I’m gonna go home.” He turned to leave. “Wait, I… do you want me to walk you home? You’re a bit drunk and it’s dark and…” “I got it, Colin. Have fun with Ed,” he nearly spat his name out, “tell Phil thanks for the beers.” Colin stood there and watched Thom leave, a pained expression on his face. Things were finally working out for him, and Thom had to ruin it. It wasn’t really Thom’s fault though, he couldn’t help how he felt. Colin grabbed the beers and headed downstairs with a sigh. Colin set the case on the floor and passed a beer to each of his friends, opening his own and sitting back down next to Ed. “Where’s Thom?” Phil asked. “He went home. He um… wasn’t feeling well.” Ed looked down at him like he knew something was up. Colin met him with an unreadable expression. “Then I’m taking his seat,” Jonny said and crawled over to the beanbag chair. Colin smiled at his brother and Phil shrugged. The night continued, Phil and Jonny laughing and bonding over music and art, Phil finding Jonny was quite smart and interesting for his age. Colin was rather quiet, Ed looking at him with concern and giving him little touches that no one else noticed. Jonny was curled up on the beanbag chair, eyelids heavy, fighting to stay awake with the other boys. Phil finally stretched and yawned, announcing that he was going to bed. “Jonny, do you wanna sleep in my guest room?” Jonny nodded eagerly. “The bed in there is pretty tiny, do you guys mind sleeping down here?” he asked, turning to Colin and Ed. “Nah,” Ed said, smiling down at Colin, excited to be alone with him, but Colin just stared at his feet. Phil went into a tiny closet in the corner of the room, returning with pillows and blankets. He threw them on top of Colin and Ed, making his way upstairs with Jonny. As soon at the door shut, Ed turned to Colin. “Okay, what happened with Thom?” Colin sighed and rested his head on Ed’s shoulder. “He kissed me.” “What?” Oh boy, Ed was pissed. “Don’t be mad. He kind of.. guessed there was something between us. I didn’t know he had feelings for me. I don’t know what to do.” Ed sighed and pulled Colin closer to him, kissing him on the head. “Thom will be okay.” “You know how he is when he has a crush.” “Yeah, but he’s gotten over all the others, he can get over this one too.” “I don’t think he actually has gotten over them.” “Do I have to beat him up for you?” Colin smiled, looking up at Ed, kissing him quickly on the lips. “C’mon, none of that.” Ed smiled, complying. “Let’s get this bed sorted, you tired?” “A bit.” They made the bed and lied down under the blankets, holding each other close, Ed drawing circles with his fingers on Colin’s back, side, and hip. Colin shuddered at the touch, burying his blushing face in Ed’s chest. They were alone, together, in bed. Anything could happen. He was dreadfully nervous. Ed held his face and leaned down to kiss him. This time it was soft, and slow, and their mouths melded together, figuring out how to move together, learning from each other. Colin tangled his hands in Ed’s hair, moaning into his mouth. Ed held his hip and pulled it closer to him, Colin felt him through his trousers and squeaked, earning a giggle from Ed. Ed rolled them over, so he was on top of Colin, caressing every inch of his body, never leaving his lips. They finally broke away for air, and Ed began leaving a trail of kisses down Colin’s neck, sucking and biting his way down to his collar bone. “Ed,” Colin squeaked. Ed stopped dead in his tracks, looking up at Colin. “Yeah?” “I don’t think I’m ready, yet. I mean I’ve never — I want to, but I’ve never…” Ed shut him up by kissing him softly. “It’s okay, I haven’t either. We can just kiss, is that okay?” Colin smiled and nodded. They made out for the rest of the night, finally falling asleep with Colin on top of Ed, his head rising and falling with Ed’s chest. ***** Chapter 3 ***** Chapter Summary Really short chapter, necessary filler. They were passed out in the dark of the basement, not hearing when Jonny and Phil came in. Jonny ran up and tackled them both, landing on top of them and evoking an oof out of each of them. “Well, aren’t you guys cute,” Phil said, standing above them. “Colin and Ed are in love!” Jonny said, being shoved off by Colin. “Shut up Jonathan.” “Aren’t we?” Ed said, smiling at them both. Colin shoved his face into Ed’s chest, trying to hide from the situation. “That’s sweet,” Phil said with a grin, “C’mon Jon, let’s make these lovebirds some tea.” Jonny hopped off them and bounded up the stairs behind Phil. Ed gently pushed Colin off him and onto his back. “You scared?” he asked, tickling Colin’s ribs. Colin giggled uncontrollably. “Get off me, scared of what?” Ed stopped. “People knowing.” Colin bit his cheek and thought for a moment. “Kind of.” “You know our friends won’t care,” Ed said, kissing him on the forehead. “Does that mean… we’re like, dating now?” Colin asked hopefully. “If you want.” “I do want.” “Then yes,” Ed smiled, leaning down to kiss Colin. They kissed for a while, before deciding to go upstairs to join the others. ——— Phil and Jonny were sitting at the kitchen table, sipping their tea and chatting away, when Colin and Ed came upstairs. They stopped and turned to them, Colin looking sheepish behind Ed. They sat down in front of their tea and there was an awkward silence. “So,” Phil started, “you guys… y’know…” “What?” asked Colin defensively. “Yes,” Ed said with a smirk. “Awwwww!” Jonny gushed, bouncing in his seat. Colin shoved him. “How sweet,” Phil smiled from behind his teacup, “does Thom know?” Colin turned red and Ed sulked at the mention of Thom. “Yeah… sort of,” Colin said. Phil raised an eyebrow at them. “Okay… well do you guys want toast or something before I kick you out?” “Nah,” Ed said. Colin shook his head. Jonny nodded. ——— The boys stopped at the Greenwood’s porch, Jonny heading inside without a second thought. Ed stopped Colin before he could follow him. “Hey, I should probably get going,” he said, looking at his shoes, “I haven’t been home in two days, dad’s gonna be pissed.” Colin frowned at him and took his hand, beckoning him to look at him. Ed kept his head down but did so. His eyes were screaming. Colin put his hand on Ed’s cheek, rubbing it with his thumb. “Are you gonna be okay?” he asked. Ed gave him a weak smile. “Yeah, of course. I’ll call you tonight, okay?” “Okay.” Colin glanced at the window, then the door, then gave Ed a quick peck on the lips. Ed squeezed his hand then departed, Colin watching him walk down the footpath until he was out of sight. ——— That night as Jonny played his guitar, Colin waited anxiously by the telephone for Ed to call. Finally it rang, and he picked it up after the first ring. “Ed?” “Um.. no, it’s Thom. Sorry to disappoint.” “Oh, hey Thom,” Colin tried to sound like he wasn’t disappointed, “What’s up mate?” “I take it Ed’s not there.” “Not tonight.” “Can I come over?” “Um.. sure.” “I’ll be there in half an hour.” “Okay.” But Thom had already hung up. Colin sat on the sofa nervously. Why did Thom want to come over? Of course he wanted to see his best friend, but after last night it was a surprise he wanted anything to do with him. A half hour flew by, and Colin saw Thom walking up the footpath towards his house. He opened the door before Thom knocked. “Hey Thom,” Colin said softly, afraid anything he did could upset Thom. “Hey Coz,” he said, pushing past Colin and inviting himself in. He marched straight up the stairs and into his room, Colin following. Jonny looked up from his guitar when Thom came in. “Thom! I didn’t know you were coming over.” “Me neither. Hey can you give me and your brother a minute? I gotta talk to him about… stuff.” Jonny shrugged and hopped off his bed, passing Colin as he went downstairs. Colin entered his room and shut the door behind him. As soon as the door was shut, Thom was on him. He shoved him up against the door and kissed him — hard. Colin kissed him back for a split second, before shoving him off him. “What the fuck, Thom?” “Sorry, I had to do that before I never get the chance again. Lord knows every time I see you from now on Ed will be glued to your hip.” “Look, I’m sorry this happened the way it did, but I really like Ed and I’m really happy with him. Can you please be happy for me too? We’re still best friends after all, aren’t we?” Thom sighed and walked closer towards Colin, Colin bracing himself. But he just leaned into Colin, resting his head on his shoulder, hugging him without his arms. Colin let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, and wrapped his arms tightly around his tiny friend. He could feel him trembling, could feel his breath coming out ragged, he was crying. Colin rocked him. He felt so sorry for him, he wished there was more he could do.   “I’m s-so sorry Cozzie. I don’t mean to be a dick. I am… happy, for both of you. This just… sucks for me, y’know?” Colin shushed him and kissed his temple. “It’s okay Thom, it really is, I understand.” Thom pulled away and wiped the tears from his face, looking up at Colin with a weak smile. “Can I stay here tonight?” Colin sighed and looked at him, pursing his lips. “I promise I won’t try anything. I’ll sleep on the floor.” “Fine. You know you don’t have to sleep on the floor.” “Nah, I don’t mind.” “Fine.” “Do you think Jonny wants to play guitars with me?” “Always.” Thom grinned and composed himself, reaching past Colin for the doorknob. “Hey Colin?” “Hm?” “Don’t tell Ed I kissed you, please?” “My lips are sealed.” “Thanks.” ***** Chapter 4 ***** Chapter Summary Finally, some smut for you animals. The next morning, Thom left in a hurry. Tonight was Christmas Eve and he wasn’t about to disappoint his mum by not even being home for it. Colin had promised Jonny they’d make cookies together tonight. They sat at the kitchen table drinking tea, Jonny staring at Colin like an excited puppy — or like he was about to pee his pants. “What?” Colin asked, sipping his tea. Jonny looked around carefully, then leaned in and whispered, “I think I love Thom.” Colin nearly spat out his tea and began choking. When he caught his breath, he said, “No you don’t.” Jonny looked offended. “How do you know?” “You’re too young.” “I’m fourteen! You had a girlfriend when you were my age!” “Yeah, but I didn’t love her.” “Then why did you date her?” “I don’t know, Jonathan.” “I wanna date Thom.” “You are not dating Thom.” “You can’t tell me who I can’t date!” “Well I am.” Jonny just looked at him and pouted. “Why do you want to date Thom, anyway?” “He’s nice… and handsome, and really good at singing and guitar. I’m really happy when I’m with him, Colin. Like, really really happy. I wanna kiss him and stuff.” Colin couldn’t help but smile. “Jonathan, that is precious.” “Shut up Colin.” “I mean it,” Colin said, ruffling his hair. “How did you get Ed to be your boyfriend?” “Uhh, I kissed him, I guess.” “Then what happened?” “He kissed me back?” “Then what?” “Erm… I asked him if it meant we were dating, and he basically said yes.” Jonny looked up at the ceiling, chewing on his lip, thinking of what his brother had told him. “So I should kiss Thom?” Colin sighed. “You can’t just… kiss him. You gotta wait for the right time.” “How do I know when it’s the right time?” “You’ll… feel it.” Jonny thought for a moment, before accepting that answer. “Okay,” he said, leaning over and kissing his brother on the cheek. “C’mon, let’s get started on those cookies,” Colin said with a smile. ——— They were mixing the dough when the phone rang. Colin wiped his hands and left Jonny to finish the mixing as he answered it. “Hello?” “Colin! I’m so sorry I didn’t call last night.” “Are you okay?” “Yeah…” Colin lowered his voice. “What happened, Ed?” “Nothing.” “Ed please talk to me.” “I don’t want you to worry about me.” “I’m already worried about you.” “My dad is just a dick, okay?” “Did he hurt you?” “Not really. I mean he didn’t like, punch me or anything.” “Jesus… I’m so sorry Ed. Are you safe there?” “I was actually hoping to come over there. I would rather spent Christmas with you.” “Lemme ask my mum, okay? I’ll call you back.” “Okay. Thanks Cozzie, I love you.” Colin paused for an uncomfortable amount of time. “I… love you too Ed.” Ed could hear him smile into the phone. Satisfied, he hung up. Colin hung the phone up, staring at it for a moment, thinking about those three words Ed had said to him. He had butterflies in his stomach and his face felt hot. He shook the feeling off and went back into the kitchen. He was met with the sight of the kitchen covered in batter, Jonny covered in even more batter, holding the mixer looking like a kicked puppy. “Jesus Jonathan! What happened?” “I don’t know how to use the mixer! It went too fast so I turned it off and waited for you to come back…” Colin chuckled and took the mixer from his brother. “It’s alright, I didn’t really show you how to use it,” he wiped some batter off Jonny’s face and licked his finger, “still good. There’s enough actually in the bowl that we’ll be fine.” Jonny beamed, ready to learn how to actually make cookies as well as Colin could. ——— Colin’s mum thought it was odd that Ed was coming over on Christmas Eve instead of spending it with his family, but she allowed it anyway, always welcoming any of her kids’ friends. Ed showed up at the door, Colin greeting him. He had a tiny cut under his eye, which Colin noticed immediately. He glared up at Ed, feeling lied to. “I’m fine, I swear,” Ed had said. Colin didn’t believe a word of it. He worried about him so much. They all sat around the table and had dinner, finishing with some of the cookies Colin and Jonny had made. They left some cookies and milk downstairs by the fireplace, despite no one in the house still believing in Santa. The boys decided to stay up in the living room watching a Christmas film, Jonny excited for it, while Colin and Ed were more excited to get more cuddling time in. Everyone went to bed, and they curled up on the sofa with a few blankets. As the movie ended, Colin turned to Jonny, who at some point had fallen dead asleep. He tucked him in, making sure he was warm and comfortable, and took Ed’s hand, leading him upstairs. Once the door was shut, Colin locked it and turned to Ed hungrily eyeing him. Ed smirked knowingly as Colin pushed him onto his bed and crawled on top of him. He held his head and kissed him frantically, grinding into him. Ed held him by the hips and kissed him just as feverishly, before finally pulling away for air. They were both out of breath. “I didn’t get you anything for Christmas, so this is my present to you,” Colin said, diving down to kiss and suck on Ed’s neck. Colin’s hand slowly travelled to the bulge in Ed’s trousers, shaking fingers stroking him gently. Ed let out a small, choked moan at the sudden contact. “Cozzie, wait a sec,” Ed choked out. Colin’s hand stopped moving but remained firmly planted on Ed’s crotch. He looked up at Ed nervously. “Did I do something wrong?” Ed smiled. “No, love, not at all. But are you sure you’re ready for this?” “I mean… not entirely, but I think…” Ed took Colin’s hand from his between his legs, brought it to his face, and kissed it. He placed his hand on his own cheek, Colin gently rubbing his cheekbone with his thumb. “I don’t want you to until you’re entirely sure.” “But… I’m mostly sure. I really want you Ed, you turn me on so much. I’m just nervous, is all. I can get over it though if you let me—“ “How about this,” Ed interrupted, “let me get you warmed up.” “What do you mean?” “Lie down, I’ll show you.” Colin complied and lied back on his bed, as Ed crawled over him and kissed his jaw. He moved agonisingly slow, kissing and nipping his way down Colin’s neck, lifting his shirt to make his way down his chest and to his belly. “Ed… Jesus, whatever you’re gonna do just do it already. I’m about to explode in my pants,” Colin whispered, gritting his teeth. Ed hushed him. “Be patient, trust me.” Colin gripped at his bedsheets while Ed lowered his pyjama trousers, giving him access to his hipbones, where he kissed and bit and sucked and left tiny bruises and pink marks in his wake. He slowly pulled Colin’s trousers further down, then completely off. Colin shuddered at the sudden coldness on his naked lower half, but Ed quickly crawled back on top of him, pulling the blanket over both of them. He kissed Colin gently and ran a hand through his hair, looking down at him with eyes full of all the love in the world. “Do you trust me?” Colin nodded. Ed seemed to think for a moment of the best way to go about what he was trying to do. He crawled back down Colin’s body, covering himself entirely beneath the blankets. Colin shuddered as he felt Ed’s breath on his hard-on. Ed kissed his tip and Colin swallowed hard, but then he moved lower. He spread Colin’s legs wide, and ducked beneath him, placing a kiss at his entrance. Colin jolted forward, but tried to calm himself. He’d never even dreamed of doing something like this. He gripped the bedsheets tighter and closed his eyes, trying to breathe. His dick twitched with want, but whatever Ed was doing down there felt better than any blowjob he’d ever imagined. Ed continued, licking a prodding at him, stretching him, until he was able to slip a finger in. Colin bit his hand to stifle his moans. He wanted to scream Ed’s name. Ed’s finger pushed deeper and deeper, as he calmed Colin by gently stroking his member and kissing his thighs. Finally his finger found what he was looking for, and tickled it, eliciting a very odd noise from Colin’s mouth. “Holyshitwhatthefuckisthatohmygodpleasedothatagain.” Ed hushed him but continued with his massaging, speeding up his strokes. It wasn’t long before Colin came, pulling on Ed’s hair and biting his lip. Ed slid his finger out slowly, and began cleaning Colin’s belly with his tongue. He finished and crawled up Colin, meeting his face and smiling down at him. Colin was grinning ear-to-ear, trying to catch his breath. He leaned forward and kissed Ed, pulling his head down towards him, as he wrapped his legs around his waist. “Where the fuck did you learn that trick?” Colin asked, breathless, as Ed collapsed on the bed next to him. “I saw it in a porno once… I do it to myself sometimes, well the fingering bit. Better than a blowjob, innit?” “I wouldn’t know.” “We’ll do that next time, then,” Ed said, smirking at his boyfriend. Colin giggled and kissed him on the cheek. “I love you so much, Ed.” “I love you too, Cozzie.” “Is it my turn?” Colin asked, tracing circles with his finger on Ed’s belly, eyeing his crotch. “Nah, next time, okay?” Colin was slightly offended. “Why? Do you think it’ll be bad?” Ed chuckled and kissed his nose. “No, I think it’ll be the best I’ve ever had. I just want you to be ready first.” “But I am ready,” Colin insisted. “Can we just wait?” “I don’t understand why you don’t want it,” Colin frowned at him. Ed frowned back, unsure of how to make Colin understand. “I do want it, babe, I do. I swear I want it more than anything. Just not yet. I don’t think we’re ready yet.” “You sure?” “Positive, love. Now put some trousers on before your brother walks in and let’s get some sleep.” Colin let out an airy laugh. “Okay.” ***** Chapter 5 ***** Chapter Summary Jon Jon and Thom Thom sittin' in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. The next morning they were rudely awakened by pounding on the door. “Go away! We’ll be up in a minute,” Colin shouted, irritated. “I’ve been knocking for like ten minutes!” Jonny shouted from the other side of the door. “I’ll get it,” Ed groaned and untangled himself from Colin. Colin grabbed his wrist. “No, stay,” he whined. Ed looked down at him and smiled, leaning down to give him a big smooch on the cheek. Colin let go of him and giggled, so he took his chance to let Jonny in. “Sorry Jon—“ “It’s time to open presents!” Jonny pushed past Ed and jumped on top of Colin. “Cozzie! Presents!” “Alright alright, Jesus. I’m up.” “Come on.” Jonny yanked him out of bed and pulled him downstairs, grabbing Ed’s hand as well on his way out the door. The Greenwoods passed presents around, not many between the four of them. Ed watched, not at all feeling awkward having nothing to open. He had already gotten his present, and it was everything he’d ever wanted. “You wanna listen to my new record with me?” Colin asked, turning to Ed. Ed nodded and they went upstairs to his room and shut the door. Ed made himself comfortable on Colin’s bed, Colin putting the record on and crawling onto the bed next to him. He laid his head on Ed’s chest and Ed held him under his arm. “Sorry we didn’t have any presents for you. Did your dad get you anything?” Colin asked. “Who cares? I already got my present.” “What’s that?” “You.” “Oh stop! You’re being sappy.” “I mean it!" Colin laughed and crawled up Ed, kissing him hard. Colin’s mouth never left Ed’s as he straddled him, holding his head and tangling his fingers in his hair. Ed held him by the hips and licked his bottom lip, asking for entrance, which was quickly granted to him. Colin moaned in his mouth, the sounds his boyfriend made making him moan as well. Colin’s hand slowly trailed from Ed’s head to his chest, his other hand resting on his neck so it was bent towards him. “Hey guys Thom is coming ov— oh.” Colin’s head sprung up and his eyes met with his brother’s. Jonny’s hand was over his mouth and he was blushing and giggling. “Jesus Jonathan, what do you want?” “Were you guys making out?” “Jonathan!” Colin squealed. Ed fell into a fit of laughter beneath him. “Sorry… um, Thom is coming over.” “What? Why?” “To hang out with me!” Jonny’s grin was taking up his whole face. Colin’s expression softened from annoyance to a sweet smile. “Well lucky you.” Jonny squeaked and ran back downstairs. Colin turned to Ed, who was looking up at him confused. “Did I miss something?” he asked. “I guess Jonathan fancies Thom now.” “That’s unexpected.” “It’s terrifying,” Colin said, crawling off Ed and plopping down on the bed next to him. Ed turned to him, propping his head up in his hand. “Why terrifying?” “You know… Thom is… I don’t know.” “In love with you?” “Yeah.” “Maybe Jonny will distract him.” “I don’t want my little brother to be his rebound.” “True…” “He came over the other day.” “What? When?” “The day before yesterday.” “Oh…” “Nothing happened. He apologised. And cried.” “Oh…wow.” “Yeah, he was a wreck.” “Are you sure nothing happened?” Colin looked at him sideways and bit his cheek. Ed sighed. “Did he kiss you again?” “Yes but I promised I wouldn’t tell.” “Why would you keep that from me?” “He’s still my friend, Ed. He’s hurting, real bad. He’s not trying to come between us or anything. Everything’s okay now, we got it sorted. He’s not gonna do it ever again.” “You got it sorted, huh?” “Ed, come on,” Colin turned to face him, “please don’t.” Ed rolled over and swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing up. “It’s fine… I’m fine. Can I use your shower?” “Of course. There’s towels in the closet in there.” “Thanks.” Ed left Colin there on his bed, feeling frustrated. He hoped he wouldn’t rat him out to Thom. He hoped they could be in the same room together without a fight breaking out. ——— By the time Ed was finished with his shower, Thom had arrived. He and Jonny were on Jonny’s bed making music together, Jonny on his electric guitar and Thom on acoustic. Colin was curled up on his bed listening intently, a smile plastered on his face. Thom and Jonny definitely had chemistry. Ed entered the room and all eyes were on him, but only for a moment. “Oh, hey Thom,” he said, sitting next to Colin. “Hi Ed!” Thom said, as if nothing had just gone down between him and Ed’s boyfriend. He turned back to Jonny, “Anyway, do that part again and then I’ll come in —“ Jonny started playing and they were lost in each other once more. Ed tried to make a big show out of putting his arm around Colin’s waist, but nobody seemed to notice. Colin turned to Ed an observed his glare. He was trying to rip Thom apart with his mind. Colin quickly planted a kiss on his cheek and whispered in his ear, “C’mon you grouch, let’s go outside.” He took Ed’s hand and pulled him out the door before he could protest. They were in the Greenwoods' back garden gathering sticks to start a fire in their fire pit. Ed was still huffing about, Colin not sure if he should ignore him or try to calm him down. “Ed, will you quit being all pissed off?” “It’s kinda hard when the guy who keeps making out with your boyfriend is a few feet away from you.” “We didn’t make out.” “Whatever.” Colin sighed and walked over to him, touching his shoulder and making him look at him. “He’s not gonna try anything, okay?” “How do you know?” “Because he’s my friend and I trust him.” “He’s my friend too and if I know Thom I know he can’t be trusted.” “What are you saying? He’s been your best mate for years, and suddenly you don’t trust him?” “Friends don’t kiss their friends' boyfriends!” “He didn’t mean it!” “How do you just accidentally kiss someone?!” “Ed, please calm down, you’re yelling at me.” “Jesus, I’m sorry Colin.” Ed dropped his sticks and wrapped Colin up in a hug. “Don’t let him get to you, okay love? Everything is okay between us, don’t let him get in the middle.” “How am I supposed to just get this out of my system, though?” Ed asked, pulling away from Colin and holding his shoulders. “I really don’t know Ed, maybe it’ll just take some time.” Colin stood on his tip toes and gave Ed a peck on the lips. “C’mon, let’s go get the matches and lighter fluid, I think we have enough.” Meanwhile, Jonny and Thom were lost in the sounds of their guitars, Thom singing along and Jonny mesmerised by his voice. Jonny got distracted by him and made a mistake, stopping the whole thing. “Shit, sorry,” Jonny said, looking down at his guitar, embarrassed. “Hey it’s okay, we can start again.” Thom thought his eagerness to impress him was endearing. Jonny looked up at him from behind his fringe and was met with a sweet smile. He blushed, thankful his hair hid most of his face. “You’ve got a really lovely voice, Thom. It’s distracting.” “Is it now? Well thanks,” Thom smirked, his eyes half lidded, looking down at Jonny. “We can start again if you’d like,” Jonny said turning back to his guitar. “Actually I think we’re both a little worn out, we should take a break. Maybe see what Ed and your brother are up to,” Thom said, getting up and putting his guitar down. “Wait — um…” Jonny wasn’t going to miss his chance. He put his guitar down. “I don’t… want to hang out with them just yet. i’ve been stuck with them since last night, y’know…” “Okay,” Thom said, plopping back down on the bed next to Jonny. “What do you wanna do then?” Jonny bit his lip, looking at Thom like he expected him to do something. He was so dreadfully awkward, he wished he could crawl into a hole right then. Or have the courage to just kiss Thom and get it over with. “You okay Jon Jon?” Jonny blushed at his new nickname. “Sorry, I won’t call you that if you don’t like it.” “No it’s… nice.” “Yeah? Good.” “You’re… nice.” Thom laughed at that. “Why are you laughing?” “Most people wouldn’t say that. I’m glad you think I am.” “Well… you’re nice to me.” “That’s because I like you.” “What kind of like?” “What?” “Never mind.” Thom looked at Jonny quizzically, Jonny hiding behind his hair, blushing like mad. His palms were sweaty and his heart was racing. Colin had made this seem so easy, but he was so nervous he couldn’t move. The gears were turning in Thom’s head. He reached out his hand and placed it over Jonny’s. “Hey… are you okay?” Jonny looked up from beneath his fringe. Thom was smiling, and it was sweet, and he melted beneath his gaze. Before he could think about it any more, he leaned forward and kissed Thom on the cheek, quick, chaste. He pulled away and stared at him, expecting the worst. Thom just laughed — hard. He fell back on Jonny’s bed and went into an absolute fit. Tears stung at Jonny’s eyes. He had kissed his crush and now he was laughing at him. What a fool he was to think he had any chance with Thom. “What's so funny?” he asked, angrily. “It’s just funny how things work out, y’know?” “W-what do you mean?” Jonny asked, holding back his tears as best he could. Thom looked up at him noticing he was starting to cry. “Oh no, Jon Jon no,” he hurried over to Jonny and wrapped his arms around him, “Jonny no don’t cry, I’m sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you. Are you okay?” Jonny furiously wiped the tears from his eyes as Thom held him. “When did… you decide you liked me?” Jonny shrugged. “It’s okay you don’t like me back, I get it.” “Whoa whoa, who said anything about not liking you back? You’re the coolest guy I know, Jonny Greenwood.” “What? Really?” Thom nodded. “Mhm, you’re a musical genius and you’re really cute.” Jonny blushed. “Have you ever kissed anybody before, Jon Jon?” Jonny blushed again. “No…” “Do you want to kiss me?” “No, I don’t know how, you’ll make fun of me,” he said, turning away. Thom took Jonny’s chin in his hand and made him look at him. Jonny looked petrified, he could almost feel his heart beating out of his chest. “Then I’ll just have to kiss you.” Thom leaned in and kissed him. Jonny’s eyes were open wide and he was panicking. Thom kept kissing him though, waiting for him to reciprocate, so he tried. He moved his lips in time with Thom’s, trying to mimic his movements. Thom pulled away, Jonny’s face still in his hand. “Not bad,” he said with a smirk. “Can we do it again?” Jonny asked, voice barely audible. “Hell yeah we can,” Thom said, leaning in for more. ——— Colin and Ed stood outside by the roaring fire they had just made. Colin’s hand found Ed’s and he looked up at him. “Do you wanna talk about your dad?” he asked, eyeing the cut beneath Ed’s eye. “No.” “Godamnit Ed, please?” “We just don’t get along.” “Yeah, obviously. Does he hit you?” “Sometimes.” “How’d you get that cut by your eye?” “He threw a bottle at me. It missed, but the broken glass went flying and got me.” “Jesus Ed, he could’ve blinded you.” “I’m fine, Cozzie.” “Maybe this time, but what about next time?” “It’s okay, school will start again in a few days and I’ll be safe there.” “What about over the summer? You’ve got to live with him for three months.” “I just… stay out of the house as much as possible. It’s my last summer with that bastard anyway, then I’ll graduate and I can find someplace else to live.” “I’m so worried about you.” “I wish you wouldn’t be.” “Can you blame me?” “…Nah… if it was your dad I’d personally kick is arse and kidnap you.” “Maybe that’s what I should do…” “Oh god, please don’t. He’d kill you, babe.” Colin just glared at the fire. Ed put his arm around him and pulled him in, so he took a deep breath and rested his head on his shoulder. “Sorry, I just really want to help you. I feel helpless.” Ed kissed his head. “I know. But you are helping, you give me something to look forward to every day.” Colin smiled. “Stop being sappy.” “You love it.” “Sort of.” The back door opened and Thom strode out, followed by Jonny. Thom’s hair was sticking up in more places than usual and he had a wild grin on his face. Jonny’s face was flushed. Colin eyed them and then glared at Thom. “Thom! What did you do?” He asked, suspicious. “Nothing your baby brother didn’t want me to.” Jonny turned beat red. Colin groaned. “I hate you, Thom Yorke.” “I love you, Colin Greenwood,” Thom said, placing a big wet kiss on Colin’s cheek. Ed tightened his grip on Colin slightly, still wary of Thom, but was smiling at the whole situation. “You’re the worst, Thom,” Colin said, wiping his cheek, “Jonathan c’mere. You okay?” “I’m fine, Colin,” Jonny said, annoyed. “Fine, fine.” “Jon Jon is fine alright,” Thom said, hugging Jonny from behind. “Please never call him that around me again.” Thom stuck his tongue out at him. “You guys are cute… I guess,” Ed said, smirking down at them. “Jonny’s cute enough for the both of us,” Thom said, kissing Jonny’s cheek. “Please stop,” Colin begged. Thom rolled his eyes but let go of Jonny, who was still blushing like mad. Poor little guy couldn’t handle all the attention. After an hour of chatting and poking at the fire, the boys decided it was cold and dark enough to go inside. “I take it you guys are staying here tonight?” Colin asked as they made it to his room. “Yes!” Thom exclaimed, jumping onto Jonny’s bed. “Is that okay?” Ed asked. “Yeah, of course it is. Thom! You’re sleeping on the floor, no funny business.” “Aw come on Cozzie. That’s not fair at all. You and your little boyfriend get to snuggle up all night, why can’t me and mine?” “Little?” Ed interjected. “You and your what?” Colin spat the word out, as if it tasted bad on his tongue. “Boyfriend!” Thom said, smirking at Jonny, who was sitting on his bed with wide eyes, frozen. “This is gross. This is the one time I wish I didn’t share a room with you, Jonathan.” Jonny just blushed, unable to speak. Ed collapsed on Colin’s bed, watching as his boyfriend turned red with anger, his little brother turned red with embarrassment, and Thom orchestrated the whole scene. “You are not sleeping with my little brother. Especially not with me in the same room.” But Thom ignored him and made himself comfortable under Jonny’s blankets, Jonny sitting at the edge of the bed watching him. “Come on Cozzie, we won’t do anything, I swear,” Jonny begged. Colin just looked at him, red in the face. “Besides, how do you think I feel waking up to you and Ed glued to each other every morning?” Thom smirked and Ed held in his laughter. Colin rolled his eyes. “Fine, but if I wake up to any wet, slurping noises in the middle of the night I’ll kick both of your arses.” Everyone in the room made a disgusted face at the visual. Colin sighed, defeated, and crawled in bed with Ed. He buried his face in his chest and groaned. “This is the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.” “Don’t be dramatic,” Ed said, rubbing his back. On the other side of the room, Thom was smothering Jonny, squishing him against the wall. “Thom, I can’t breathe,” Jonny whispered. “I don’t care,” Thom whispered back, leaning in to kiss him. “Thom! Colin said no!” “C’mon, just a little one,” he begged, stroking Jonny’s hip. Jonny let him come in for another kiss, which was deep and long and certainly not a little one. “I can fucking hear you!!!! Jesus!!!! I’m gonna puke!!!!” Colin yelled, as a pillow hit them square in the face. “Okay okay I’m done, goddamn.” Thom whined, letting go of Jonny and settling into his pillow, smirking up at him. “Sorry Colin,” Jonny said, blushing, sinking into the mattress, trying to sink through it. ***** Chapter 6 ***** Chapter Summary This chapter is pure smut. You're welcome. Colin shoved Thom up against the Greenwoods’ kitchen counter, kissing him hungrily. His tongue was down Thom’s throat, they were naked, their erections pressing up against each other, both boys grinding their hips to get as much friction as possible. Colin lifted Thom and threw him on the counter, Thom’s legs wrapping around his waist, his arms around his neck, both their tongues fighting for dominance. Colin’s member was pressed up against Thom’s entrance, throbbing, as Colin broke awake from the kiss to bite and suck at Thom’s neck. “Please…” Thom whispered, and Colin looked up at him with a mischievous grin. Thom’s eyes flew open. He was hard, out of breath, and sweating. “Shit,” he muttered into the dark room. Everyone else was still fast asleep. He had no idea what time it was. He turned to Jonny who was curled up at his side, sleeping soundly. He bit his lip, cursing himself for what he was about to do. He knew better, but he was thinking with his dick right now, so he gently shook Jonny’s shoulder. Jonny made an irritated face, but didn’t seem to wake up. “Jonny,” he whispered. Jonny’s eyes fluttered open, still half-lidded. “Thom?” “Shhh, Jonny, I need you, come on.” “Wha-what? Are you okay?” Jonny was mostly awake now, concerned at the panic in Thom’s voice. “No, come on,” Thom whispered, yanking at Jonny’s hand and making to get out of bed. Jonny complied and he hurried them to the bathroom across the hall, locking the door behind them. “Thom, what—“ “Shut up,” Thom cut him off and kissed him fiercely, pushing him back against the bathroom wall, his hand making its way to the front of Jonny’s trousers. “Thom, wait,” Jonny said, breaking from the kiss and pushing Thom away slightly. “What are you—“ “I don’t know, Jon Jon. I don’t know, but I need you right now. Is this okay? Please?” “I’ve not… I don’t — I mean I’ve never…” Jonny stumbled over his words. He was nervous, but the growing bulge in his trousers couldn’t be ignored. “I know, I know. I’m sorry. This is really stupid. Just… you don’t have to do anything, never mind. I’m sorry Jonny. Jesus, I…” “Thom, it’s okay. I can… um. Can we just slow down?” “Yeah… of course. But you don’t have to —“ “Can we turn the lights off?” “Um.. okay.” Thom turned around and flipped the light switch off, as Jonny snuck up behind him and held his hips. He started kissing his neck, and Thom pressed himself back against him. Jonny turned him around and pulled his hips into his, the sudden contact making them both moan. Jonny kissed him first, starting to get the hang of it. He kissed him hard, forcing his tongue into his mouth, making Thom moan again. Thom’s erection was screaming for friction, so he began grinding his hips into Jonny’s, holding him by the shoulders to keep his balance. They finally broke away for air. “Damn, Jon Jon, I didn’t know—“ “Sit on the counter,” Jonny demanded, suddenly taking control. “I can’t… fucking, see the counter.” “I’ll guide you,” Jonny said, turning him around and guiding his hips through the bathroom. He felt his butt hit the edge of the counter. “Now up,” Jonny said, lifting him slightly to help him sit up. Jonny shoved his hips between Thom’s legs and kissed him some more, not really sure where to go from there, hoping Thom would guide him. Thom reached forward and slipped his fingers under Jonny’s waistband. “Is this okay?” he asked, breathless. Jonny nodded, before remembering Thom couldn’t see him. “Yeah.” Thom snaked his hand lower, finding Jonny’s cock and squeezing at the base, before sliding it up to massage his tip. Jonny inhaled sharply and bit his lip to keep from making too much noise. He kissed Thom again, hoping Thom’s mouth would swallow all of his moans. As Thom stroked him, his other hand found Jonny’s, and moved it to place it on his crotch, where Jonny immediately understood and began stroking Thom in time. “Jonny, wait.” Thom stopped his strokes. He pulled his own trousers and pants off and guided Jonny to do the same for himself. “We’re gonna make a mess.” He smirked, but Jonny didn’t see. “Right,” Jonny said, kicking his own off and slowly moving back to his position on Thom. They started again, and within just a few minutes, Thom came first, spilling into Jonny’s hand, and then Jonny, some of his getting on the floor. They stayed like that, catching their breath, then Thom chuckled. “Why do you always laugh at me?” Jonny said, only half hurt, catching on to Thom’s antics. “I’m not, I swear.” As their breathing slowed to normal, Thom spoke again, “That was… fun,” he whispered, finding Jonny’s lips in the dark and kissing them. “Yeah, we should clean up.” “Okay,” Thom said, hopping off the counter and making his way to the light switch. “Wait! Don’t.” “What?” “I don’t want you to… see me.” “Aw, Jon Jon, I’m sure your cock is beautiful.” “Shut up! Just… not yet. Please?” Jonny was thankful Thom couldn’t see him blushing. “Fine, but how will we—“ Thom was interrupted by the sound of the faucet turning on. “Come here,” Jonny whispered. Thom followed the sound of his voice until his wrist was grabbed and shoved under the running water. They washed their hands and put their trousers back on in the dark. “Can I turn the lights on now?” “Yes.” Thom switched the light on and finally had a look at Jonny. He was beautiful. His hair was wild and his face was spent. His eyes roamed Jonny’s body until they found the spot on the floor where he’d… missed Thom’s hand. “You missed a spot,” Thom said, eyeing the droplets of cum on the floor. Jonny looked down and blushed bright red, cleaning it up with some toilet tissue and flushing it. Jonny kept his eyes glued to the floor and walked over to Thom, hugging him tight and resting his head on his shoulder. “Thanks, Thom Thom.” Thom bit his lip, knowing what he’d just done was not entirely honest. He wasn’t a religious man, but he prayed Jonny would never find out about his crush on his brother, and that his feelings for Colin would fade in time. “Let’s go back to bed, I’m exhausted.” Jonny nodded and pulled away, leading him back into the bedroom. They crept back into the room as quietly as possible, the sun beginning to rise and shedding a dim light onto the room. Jonny crawled straight into bed, Thom glancing over at Ed and Colin as he entered. He jumped when he saw that Ed was awake, eyeing him knowingly with one eyebrow raised. Thom raised his finger to his lips, silently telling Ed to keep his damn mouth shut. Ed smirked and sunk back down into his pillow, burying his face in Colin’s hair once more. As soon as Thom got back into bed, Jonny was wrapped around him, sighing contently. Thom kissed his head and closed his eyes, but he wouldn’t be going back to sleep, the guilt nagging at him until morning. ***** Chapter 7 ***** Chapter Summary Oh no. Colin was the first one awake, which was unusual for him. He woke with a nagging feeling in his gut that he couldn’t shake. He curled up into his partner, not ready to get out of bed yet, if ever again. Ed stirred above him but didn’t wake up. He almost wished he would, he knew Ed would put his mind at ease. He’d had a dream that he and Jonny had caught Thom and Ed together. He knew it would never happen, but the memory of it still made him feel sick. He sighed and crawled out of bed, maybe a cup of tea would help. He made his way downstairs, meeting his mum in the kitchen. She was at the table sipping a cup of tea, reading a magazine. “Hey mum.” “Hello love.” “Is the kettle still hot?” “Sure is.” Colin smiled and poured himself a cup, adding a teabag and copious amounts of milk and sugar. He sat down next to his mum. “How have you been dear? I haven’t heard much from you and your brother since you’ve been back home,” she said, putting her magazine down and turning to him. Yeah… sorry mum. We’ve been great! Just busy with our friends. It’s nice to see them outside of school. Jonathan is in the band now, he’s playing lead guitar, isn’t that great?” “I’m so proud of you two,” she said with a smile. They sipped their tea in silence for a while before she spoke again. “I noticed Edward’s been staying here a lot this week…” Colin tried to hide his blushing. Mother’s intuition had him again. “Yeah is… that okay? His home life isn’t so good so.. y’know. You don’t mind do you?” “Of course not. He can stay here as much as he wants. I just don’t want his father on my doorstep accusing us of kidnapping,” she said, chuckling. Colin smiled. “I don’t think that would happen.” They sat in more silence, Mrs. Greenwood glancing between her son and her magazine. Colin finally sighed, taking a big gulp of tea for courage. “Mum, can I tell you something?” “You can tell me anything, dear.” “Ed and I are… more than just friends.” “Yeah, clearly. And Jonathan and Thomas?” “God mum, how did you know?” “I’m your mum.” “Yeah…” “I’m happy for you both, just don’t let it ruin your friendship, alright?” “Alright,” Colin said with a smile. His mum ruffled his hair and picked her magazine back up. He kissed her on the cheek. “Don’t tell Jonathan I told you about him and Thom, okay?” “You didn’t, I guessed,” she said, winking. Colin finished his tea and got up to pour himself another cup. “Why don’t you bring Edward some tea before you drink all of it? And get the other boys up, I’m making breakfast.” “Good idea. Thanks mum,” Colin said, getting out another mug for Ed. He knew Ed took his tea black, so he poured him a cup and made his way upstairs. He opened the door to his room, finding Jonny and Thom awake, but still in bed. Jonny was wrapped around Thom and Thom was lying on his back staring at the ceiling, his arm around Jonny. When he saw Colin he turned to him. “Good morning,” he said quietly, as Ed was still asleep. Jonny mumbled something incoherent. Colin smiled at them and sat on his bed beside Ed, putting the mugs down on his nightstand. He touched Ed’s shoulder, gently nudging him awake. “Hey babe, I brought you tea,” he said softly. Ed’s eyes fluttered open, and he smiled sweetly when he saw Colin. “Aren’t you sweet, c’mere,” he said, puckering his lips and looking at his boyfriend expectantly. Colin giggled and leaned down to kiss him. “Gross!” Thom shouted from the other side of the room. “Shut up, Yorke!” Ed said, glaring at Thom, reminding him with his eyes that he had dirt on him. Thom blushed and Jonny looked up at him quizzically. Colin handed the tea to Ed, who sat up and sipped it. “Hey, I probably should get going early today,” Ed said solemnly. “Mum’s making breakfast, can you stay for that?” “Okay.” ------ Thom and Ed left after breakfast, and the next day the boys had band practice. The rest of the week flew by much like the first half. Ed stayed with the Greenwoods as often as possible. Jonny stayed at Thom’s house a few times, and they had a few more practices at Phil’s. New Year’s was spent at Phil’s flat, even Phil’s elusive girlfriend showed up to the party. Drunken snogging all around, and they fell asleep in random spots on Phil’s floor. Every time Ed was around Colin, he noticed a new bruise or cut on him, the others rarely noticing them. Ed brushed off the subject every time Colin mentioned it, frustrating Colin more and more each time. Jonny was completely smitten with Thom, while the guilt stabbed Thom in the gut every time he saw him. Thom felt like he was losing his mind, he had to talk to someone about his predicament so he showed up uninvited to Phil’s flat the night before they all had to go back to school. Phil opened the door to his flat and was greeted by a very disgruntled looking Thom. “Oh hey Thom, I didn’t know—“ “Phil I have to talk to you,” Thom said, pushing past Phil and plopping down on his sofa. “Okay…” Phil shut the door and sat on the armchair across from Thom. “What’s up?” Thom sighed and rubbed his face. “Okay, you know how Jonny and I are dating?” “Well… yeah I figured that out when I caught you lot making out in—“ “Right, but, you know how I liked Colin before?” “Boy do I.” “Yeah well the problem is… I still do. But I like Jonny too… or I think I do. I’m pretty sure I do. But I can’t keep my mind off Colin and I’m dying, Phil. I’m fucking dying.” “Well you have to pick one, Thom.” “Well I’m trying to pick Jonny! He’s totally in love with me! I can’t break his little heart like that. Colin would murder me. I can’t have Colin anyway, him and Ed are practically married at this point.” “Maybe you should try spending some time away from Colin.” “I can’t, Phil! We’re fucking roommates and we go back to school tomorrow. I’m gonna be stuck with that bastard night and day and Jonny won’t be around at all.” “Yikes.” “Yeah, it’s bad. I’m fucked, Phil, totally, completely, dryly fucked.” “Jonny’s a smart kid, he’s gonna catch on eventually if you don’t hurry up and fall out of love with Colin.” “How does one just fall out of love with Colin fucking Greenwood? He’s a goddamn angel! Have you fucking seen him?” “Yes, Thom, I have seen Colin.” “Then you know.” “Not really, but alright.” Thom looked at Phil desperately, begging him with his expression to solve all his problems. Phil bit his cheek, searching his mind frantically for a solution. “Maybe you should… take a break from Jonny.” “What?” “Until you’ve got Colin out of your head, then try again. It’s not fair to him that you’re thinking about his brother while you’re fucking him,” he said, crossing his arms. “We’re not fucking, not yet anyway.” “Good, ‘cause once you do he’ll be stuck to you like a parasite. He’s still young and impressionable, Thom. The longer you lead him on the harder it’s gonna be.” “But I really do like him.” “But do you love him?” “I… don’t know…” “Do you love Colin?” Thom just frowned. “You see the problem?” Thom groaned and ran his fingers through his hair. He sighed, stood up, and sat down on Phil’s lap, curling into him and letting himself cry. He sobbed into Phil’s neck and Phil held him and rubbed his back, hushing him and reminding him everything would be okay. He knew what he had to do, but he wasn’t sure if he’d even be able to do it. ***** Chapter 8 ***** The next day, Thom and Colin met in their room at school. They had the evening to unpack, the next morning classes would start. Colin was in high spirits as usual, but Thom looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Thom sat on his bed and stared at the wall, while Colin hurried around him unpacking. Colin noticed he wasn’t moving, so he stopped, sat next to him, and put his hand on Thom’s shoulder. “Hey mate, you alright?” Thom blinked and looked at Colin. “Yeah just… tired.” Colin pursed his lips and studied Thom, knowing his friend well enough to know it wasn’t just that. He shuffled around on the bed and started massaging Thom’s shoulders. Thom sighed and touched Colin’s hands, removing them from his shoulders. “That’s nice, Cozzie, but I can’t have you touching me like that.” Colin raised an eyebrow at him, confused. “What? What are you talking about, Thom?” Thom just looked at him, begging him with his eyes not to make him say it, but he didn’t get it. “I don’t understand.” “I… can’t talk about it, okay?” “Thom? What’s going on? We’re best mates, you can tell me anything.” “Not this. You’d hang me.” “Did you cheat on my brother?” Colin said, accusingly. Thom laughed. “No.” “Then what is it, Thom? If you don’t tell me, I’m gonna hang you.” “Godamnit Colin.” “Please? I wanna help.” Thom sighed, turning to face Colin, his eyes pleading. “You have to promise you won’t get mad. Or tell Ed.” “I promise.” “I still… lo—like you, Cozzie. I like Jonny too but I can’t get you out of my head and it makes me feel like an arsehole. It’s not fair to him. I want to like only him, but every time I look at him I just see the similarities between you two and it’s so, so fucking hard, Colin. I feel like I’m going crazy. I have no idea what to do. I want to be with Jonny, I swear I do, and I don’t ever want to hurt him, but I want to be with you too, bad, and it’s killing me.” “Oh…” “Yeah,” Thom said quietly, looking down, not wanting to meet Colin’s gaze. “Shit, Thom.” Thom just groaned and fell onto the bed, rolling over so he didn’t have to face Colin. Tears stung at the corners of his eyes. He didn’t even care if he cried at this point, he felt so defeated. “I’m not mad, I don’t hate you.” Thom sniffed. “Thanks.” Colin wanted to comfort his friend, he wanted to crawl on top of him and wrap him up in his embrace and kiss him all over his face and let him cry and tell him everything would work out in the end. But he knew it would just be a tease, he was afraid to even touch him, and it stung. He didn’t even know if things would work out in the end. Everything was a fucking mess. “Thom, I think maybe you should break up with Jonny.” “I know… that’s what Phil says too.” “It’s going to fucking crush him.” “It’s going to fucking crush me too.” “You have to promise us both you’ll take him back once this is sorted, alright?” “Oh I definitely will. I want to. He makes me happy, Cozzie.” “You make him happy too. And don’t tell him about your feelings for me, whatever you do.” “I’ll come up with something.” “Come here, can I hug you?” Thom sat up and leaned into Colin, letting him hold him. He couldn’t help but to leave kisses in his hair and rub his back. Thom let himself full-on cry now, sobbing into Colin’s shoulder. Colin hushed him and let him do so. He’d let Thom cry on him for the rest of eternity if it meant he could help his friend even a little bit. Thom finally pulled away and wiped his face, sniffling. “You’re a really good friend to me Cozzie, I don’t deserve you.” “Oh hush Thom. You’re my best friend, you always will be, no matter what.” Colin leaned in and kissed his tear-stained cheek. Thom smiled up at him. “Sorry, I couldn’t help it.” “S’okay, ya tease.” “Oh shut up. I’m gonna give you a minute to unpack, do you mind if I go see if Ed is here?” “I’m not your keeper.” “I just want to make sure you’re—“ “Go, Colin. I’m fine.” “Alright,” Colin said, ruffling his hair. Colin left Thom sitting on his bed, and went down the hall to Ed’s room. He knocked on the door and waited a moment. His roommate, Nigel, answered the door. “Hey Colin, what’s up?” “Looking for Ed.” “Ah, he’s not here yet. But you can come in and wait if you want, I could use some company.” “Sure,” Colin said, letting himself in and sitting on Ed’s bed. He watched Nigel unpack for a moment. “So how was your holiday?” he finally asked. “Good, a bit boring.” “Yeah, mine was good.” “Is Thom here?” “Yeah.” “Well invite him over!” “He’s busy unpacking, but I’m sure he’d love to catch up with you.” “Alright, let him know I’m up for having a chat whenever.” “Will do.” The door creaked open and both boys turned to see Ed. His eyes met Colin’s and a huge grin stretched across his face. “Cozzie! I didn’t expect to see you here!” he said, hurrying in and hugging him, giving him a peck on the cheek. “Yeah, he was waiting on you. You guys act like you haven’t seen each other in ages, I’d expect you two to hang out over holiday, what with your band and all.” Colin and Ed glanced at each other, Colin blushing. “Yeah, we saw each other… a lot,” Ed said. Nigel looked between the two and raised an eyebrow. “Hey Nigel, can you keep a secret?” Ed asked, sitting next to Colin on the bed. Colin looked at him with wide eyes, but Ed’s expression said calm down, it’s okay. “Yeah, of course. Why…?” Nigel said suspiciously, sitting on his bed. “Welllll….” Ed started, leaning closer to Colin, “Colin and I… might be a little gay for each other.” He turned to Colin with a sly grin on his face. “Do you have to put it like that?” Colin complained. “So you guys are… boyfriends?” Nigel asked, more like a statement than a question. They both nodded. Nigel seemed to piece it together in his head for a moment. “Alright well that’s… nice for you. I don’t care, but don’t let the whole school know or you guys are doomed.” “Yeah, that’s why you have to keep it a secret,” Ed said, as if it were a warning. “No worries. Your secret’s safe with me guys.” “Thanks Nigel,” Colin said. They heard a light tapping at the door, and Nigel answered it. “Thomas Yorke! Come on in mate, I’ve missed you.” Thom smiled shyly and let himself in. He plopped down on Nigel’s bed and greeted Colin and Ed. “Hey guys, I finished unpacking. I figured I’d come hang out.” “I should probably start unpacking,” Ed said, kissing Colin’s cheek. The four boys unpacked and chatted until dinner time. Nigel was a good friend of theirs and was always interested in their band, him playing a few instruments as well. He generally sat in on their practices after classes, manning the drum machine since Phil couldn’t always be there. The boys made their way to the cafeteria and sat down at a table together. Ed poked at his food. “I miss your mum’s food already, Cozzie.” “Me too mate,” Colin said, looking at his tray with dismay. “I think it’s alright,” Thom said with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. “That’s ‘cause you’re sick, Thomas,” Nigel said as he sat down next to him. Thom shoved him and they all laughed, digging into their mystery meat and potatoes. ——— After dinner the boys all went back to their rooms, changing into their pyjamas. Thom was pulling his shirt over his head when the phone in their room rang, Colin answering it. “Hi Cozzie.” “Jonathan, hello.” He made a face at Thom across the room, who frowned back at him, waiting to be handed the phone. “Can I talk to Thom?” “What, you don’t want to talk to your big brother?” Colin teased, stalling. “No! Of course I do. But I gotta talk to Thom about something important.” “Hm, okay then. Here he is.” He handed the phone to Thom, who took it with a shaky hand. Colin slipped out the door and headed for Ed and Nigel’s room, giving Thom some privacy to do The Deed. “Hey Jon Jon.” “Hey Thom Thom. Is Colin still in the room?” “No, he left. I’ve got to talk to you about something.” “Me first.” Thom inhaled sharply. “Okay… what is it?” “I think… we should break up, for a little while.” “Wait, what?” “I really, really liked spending time with you over holiday, and I still want to see you, and be in the band and stuff, but I’m not gonna see you much while we’re in school, and I think it would be best if we just… took a break? I guess? We can get back together over the summer though, I mean, if you still want to…” “Yeah. I mean… yeah, okay. I understand. It’s okay. Yeah of course, I’d still like to date you… when the time is right.” “Can I still be in the band?” “Jonny, of course. That’s a silly question.” “What about… like… when I see you… can we, y’know…” “What?” “Still like, kiss and stuff? I really like kissing you, Thom.” “Jon Jon, you are a doll. Of course we can. I really like kissing you too.” Thom smiled into the phone, and he heard Jonny smile too. “So you’re not mad?” “Of course not.” “Okay. What was it you wanted to talk to me about?” “Ah nothing. It’s not important.” “You sure?” “Positive.” “Okay, I gotta go now. I love you, Thom Thom.” “I love you too Jon Jon. Bye.” “Bye.” Thom hung up the phone and stared at the wall for a moment. What just happened? It was weird, but, he smiled. He couldn’t believe he’d gotten out of that so easily. He’d tell Colin whenever he got back. He decided to take a shower and get into bed. ——— When Ed greeted Colin at the door, he was in pyjama bottoms and no shirt. Colin eyed him up and down and swallowed hard. Ed smirked down at him. “Get in here,” he said, pulling Colin in by the wrist and locking the door behind him. Once in the room, he grabbed Colin’s face and kissed him hard. He pulled away and Colin was stunned, his eyes darting around the room. “Nigel’s not here, it’s okay.” “Where is he?” “Probably smoking outside, we don’t have much time, c’mere.” Ed pushed him onto his bed and crawled on top of him, kissing his neck. Colin moaned, “Ed, are you sure?” “The door is locked anyway, if he comes back we’ll have time.” Colin nodded and let Ed leave a trail of kisses down his body, as his hand found his crotch and began stroking him through his trousers. Colin breathed heavy and let Ed have his way with him. Ed lowered Colin’s pyjama bottoms and kissed and sucked on his hipbones while stroking his cock. Colin moaned and mewed but kept his voice low, for he knew the walls of the school were paper thin. Ed took him into his mouth, finally, and Colin’s hands found Ed’s hair, gripping it tightly and pushing his head down onto him, thrusting into him slightly. It wasn’t long before he came in Ed’s mouth, as Ed knew all of his sensitive spots, and Ed swallowed all of him. Ed pulled his trousers back up and kissed him hard on the mouth, letting him taste himself. Colin moaned into his mouth, licking his lips, lapping up his own essence from his tongue. He pulled away, catching his breath. “God, I love when I can taste myself on you,” he whispered. Ed giggled and leaned down to kiss him again, when the doorknob jangled. “Ed! Why is the door locked?” It was Nigel. Ed kissed Colin quickly on the forehead and hopped off him to open the door. “Hey Nigel.” Nigel looked him up and down, and a bored expression stretched across his face. “I take it Cozzie’s in there?” “Now why would you think that?” Ed said, smirking. “Because you still have a boner,” Nigel said, pointing to the bulge in Ed’s trousers. He heard Colin having a giggle fit from inside the room. “Shit, sorry.” Ed apologised and Nigel rolled his eyes, pushing past him into the room. He threw his book bag in a corner and plopped down on his bed. “Is this gonna be a regular occurrence?” he asked, looking at Colin who was lying comfortably in Ed’s bed. He blushed at the confrontation. “Probably,” Ed said, sitting on his bed and leaning down to kiss Colin’s cheek. “Well could you be more… subtle about it?” “Sorry Nigel,” Ed apologised, genuinely. “We’ll try not to be gross,” Colin added. Colin sat up and turned to Ed, “I’ve got to go, light’s out soon. Love you,” he said, kissing Ed quickly on the lips. “Love you, goodnight.” “Bye Nigel,” Colin said as he walked out the door and snuck back to his room. Colin took a deep breath before opening the door to his room, expecting to find Thom an absolute wreck when he walked in. Much to his surprise, Thom was sitting quietly in his bed with headphones on, eyes closed, bobbing his head to the music, a slight smile plastered on his face. Colin cautiously stepped in and sat at the foot of Thom’s bed. Feeling the weight shift, Thom opened his eyes and took his headphones off, smiling at Colin. “What are you so chipper about? What the hell happened?” Colin asked. “You wouldn’t believe it, Cozzie. Your baby brother broke up with me.” “What? He did not!” “He did! He said he wanted to take a break until summer.” “Wow, you really got lucky, huh?” “I know! Everything’s cool between us. He even still wants to, and I quote, kiss and stuff.” “Gross! Thanks for adding that!” “Of course!” The boys laughed for a moment. “It’s nice to see you smiling, Thom.” “It’s nice to smile.” Colin ruffled his hair. “Let’s get to bed, hall monitors should be making their rounds soon. You and I got biology in the morning.” “Don’t remind me.” They got into bed and turned off the lights, lying there in silence for a moment. “Oh, Thom?” “Yeah?” “Ed says hi.” “Okay.” ***** Chapter 9 ***** Chapter Summary Sorry the whole Stanley thing is just... awkward. Idk, I wanted to have him play a bigger role in the story but it just didn't happen. Anyway, on with the show. Biology class came all too soon, and the boys were already bored to death ten minutes into class. Thom watched as Colin diligently took notes, trying to keep himself awake. He ripped out a sheet from his notebook and passed a note to him. I’m bored to death. Pay attention, it’s not that bad. Do you even know me, Greenwood? Point taken. Band practice before dinner? Yeah, tell Ed next class. I’ll tell Nigel. The bell rang and Thom tossed the note in the bin, parting from Colin and heading to his next class with Ed. When Colin got to class, Nigel was already there, so he sat next to him. “Hey mate, band practice before dinner?” “Sounds good.” “So…” Colin looked around the room, trying to think of something to talk about. He was feeling awkward after Nigel had caught him redhanded last night. “You… get much sleep last night?” Nigel chuckled. “I’m sure you know how Ed sleep talks.” “Oh, yeah,” Colin said, laughing. “He was moaning your name all night.” “Jesus Nigel!” Colin turned beat red. “Keep your voice down.” “Don’t worry mate, nobody heard.” A boy a few seats down from them raised an eyebrow at them, but they didn’t notice. He leaned in to have a closer listen. Colin whispered, “was he really?” “Yeah man, it was horrid. I couldn’t even wake him up.” “God, I’m so sorry.” “I mean, it’s happened before, but with you two.. y’know, I think it’s going to get worse.” “It happened before?” “Oh yeah. Every now and then. It was always you.” Colin’s heart did a backflip, as the bell for the beginning of class rang. Colin couldn’t focus on the lesson, once again he was distracted by Ed, and Ed wasn’t even there. He doodled little hearts in his notebook, as he thought about the fact that Ed had liked him long before they got together. He never would have guessed, all that time he thought he’d never have a chance with him, and the whole time Ed was crushing on him just as hard. The next class he didn’t have with any of his friends, but after that he would see Ed, and he couldn’t wait. The next class went by agonisingly slowly. At least without his mates around he could pay attention, not that he wanted to. He took notes and thought about writing Ed a love note, but thought better of it. If anyone else found it they’d both be dead. ——— Finally the class was over, and Colin rushed out to meet Ed, who was waiting for him by his locker. The boy who was listening to him and Nigel followed him, his locker being only a few away. Ed noticed him staring, but quickly looked away, thinking nothing of it. “Hey Cozzie,” he said, eyeing Colin lovingly. “Hi Ed,” Colin said, a huge grin on his face. He opened his locker and exchanged some books, before shutting it and walking with Ed. “So I guess band practice tonight?” Ed asked. “That’s what Thom said.” “It’s gonna be weird without Jonny.” “I know. It doesn’t seem right without him anymore.” Ed glanced over his shoulder, meeting the gaze of that boy again. He quickly turned away. “You okay?” Colin asked. “Some kid keeps staring at us.” “He’s probably just staring at you.” “Why?” “‘Cause you’re cute.” “Shut up Colin,” Ed said, blushing and grinning. They made their way into the classroom and sat down next to each other. The boy who had been staring sat behind Colin. Ed eyed him for a moment, Colin completely oblivious. They passed notes during class, making jokes about the teacher and flirting like mad. Colin told Ed all about Thom and Jonny, not mentioning Thom’s feelings for him. What Ed didn’t know couldn’t hurt him. Colin felt a bit guilty about keeping things from Ed, but he told himself Ed could probably sense it anyway. After class Colin shoved the note into his pocket, making a mental note to dispose of the evidence that evening. They made their way into the cafeteria, sitting down with Thom. “Where’s Nigel?” Colin asked. “Probably smoking,” Thom shrugged. Ed leaned forward and in a hushed voice said, “hey guys, that kid over there is definitely spying on us and it’s freaking me out.” “You’re being paranoid, Ed,” Colin said, digging into his lunch. “I am not. Keep an eye out for him.” “Like I said, he probably just thinks you’re cute. Trust me, he’s about to come over here and try to hit on you any minute now.” Ed grinned at Colin and quickly squeezed his thigh under the table, hoping no one would notice. “Yeah, sucks for him I’m taken.” Colin blushed. Thom rolled his eyes. Near the end of the lunch hour, Nigel finally showed up, out of breath and stinking of cigarettes. “What did I tell you?” Thom said. “What?” Nigel was oblivious. Thom leaned in and whispered in his ear, “you stink, buddy.” “Godamnit,” Nigel said, sniffing his jumper. The day went on as any other day, Ed keeping an eye out for their stalker, who only seemed to pop up when he was with Colin. After their classes the boys met in the music room and set up to begin practice. “Okay,” Thom started, “we’ll do Ripcord to warm up, then I wanna work on the new ones, okay guys?” They all agreed and went straight into it. After a few songs Thom stopped, sighing. “What’s wrong? We were doing fine,” Ed complained. “It’s not the same without Jon Jon,” Thom said, looking at his feet and sulking. Colin frowned. “We can have practice at Phil’s this weekend, Jonathan will be there. It’s only a week,” Colin offered. “Yeah, but that’s only like, one practice. Jonny’s missing out on so much.” “Hey, I miss out on even more when you guys aren’t in school. I haven’t even heard half the songs we’ve run through today. I haven’t a clue what we’re doing,” Nigel complained. “You’re doing great, though, Nigel,” Thom said, smiling at him. “C’mon guys,” Ed interrupted, “We’ve only got a few minutes left. Let’s just finish and get dinner. ——— After practice Nigel snuck out to go smoke again, the rest of the boys heading to the cafeteria. As they chatted and ate their dinners, the boy who had been watching them all day took a seat next to Ed. “Um… can I help you?” Ed asked defensively. “You can’t go here if you’re a poof.” Ed swallowed hard. “Uhh, what?” He let out a fake laugh. “If you’re gay. You can’t go to an all-boys school.” “Okay, who the fuck are you?” “Stanley.” “And why are you telling us this?” “Just looking out for you.” The three boys gave him an odd look, all of them starting to sweat, when Nigel finally returned. “Who’s this?” he asked. “Our stalker. I told you guys,” Ed said, turning away from Stanley. “His name is Stanley,” Thom commented. “Well why is he here?” Nigel asked, beginning to feel uneasy. “Warning us we’re not allowed to be gay, or some shit, apparently,” Ed shrugged. “What the fuck?” Nigel was perplexed. “Look I’m just saying… don’t let anybody catch you,” Stanley said, getting up and walking away. The boys looked at each other quizzically for a moment. “What the fuck was that all about?” Thom finally asked. Colin was staring at his dinner tray, having suddenly lost his appetite. He was scared to death. He knew if one boy had figured it out, it was just a matter of time before the whole school knew, and they’d be bullied and beaten every day until they graduated. Ed noticed Colin freaking out, and put a hand on his back, rubbing it. “Hey, Cozzie,” he said softly, “it’s okay, don’t worry about—“ “Don’t touch me,” Colin said, moving away. Tears were starting to sting at his eyes. Ed pulled his hand away and looked at Colin, hurt. Colin looked at him with tears threatening to spill over. He got up and quickly walked away and out of the cafeteria. “Shit,” Thom said. Nigel was silent. “Godamnit,” Ed groaned, getting up and hurrying after Colin. Half the cafeteria had watched the scene go down, having no idea what any of it was about. Ed found Colin in the locker room, curled up into himself against a row of lockers, crying silently into his knees. “Colin,” he whispered, hurrying over to him and sitting down, wrapping him up in his embrace. “Get off me Ed, what if someone sees us?” “What if someone sees a bloke comforting his friend? Big deal Cozzie, you don’t have to be paranoid all of the sudden.” “Yes I do, Ed. One kid already figured us out, it’s just a matter of time before the bullies find out. What if he tells someone? We can’t do this anymore Ed, I’m so scared.” “Cozzie, we can’t let them scare us. That kid’s a dumbass, we can’t get kicked out of school for liking each other.” “I know that, I’m not stupid. But we can get run out of school by bullies. They’re fucking vicious, Ed.” “I know they are, but if anything happens I’ve got you, okay? I’ll protect you from all of them. They can’t hurt you.” “Jesus Ed, you already get so much shit from your dad at home, it’s not fair that you should have to get it at school too!” “Shh, Colin I don’t care. I don’t care about any of that. You make me so happy it’s all worth it.” Colin just leaned into him and cried his heart out. Ed held him tight and kissed his head over and over. After a few minutes, Colin’s sobs became further apart, and he stopped trembling. He lifted his head and looked up at Ed, who met his eyes with a worried look. Colin sniffled and wiped his face. “Can I have a kiss?” he asked with a weak smile. Ed smirked and held his chin, kissing him delicately, afraid to break him. Colin’s hand found the back of Ed’s head, and he deepened the kiss. They didn’t hear when the locker room door opened. “What the fuck is this?” They both jumped and pulled away. Two boys they hardly recognised but had seen in passing were standing above them, looking pissed. “Shit,” Ed muttered under his breath. “Yeah, shit,” the taller one said. Ed stood up and extended his hand to help Colin up. Thankfully, Ed towered above both of the boys, but they were bigger than him width-wise, and more muscular. One of them was clearly an athlete, and the other… well he just ate a lot. “Leave us alone,” Ed said, taking Colin’s hand and making to push past them and leave. “Not so fast,” the shorter, heavier boy blocked the door. Ed could feel Colin’s hand shaking, so he squeezed it. “I could’ve guess you were a fucking poof, Greenwood, but O’Brien? Really? I thought you were better than that.” “Piss off, man, I don’t even know you,” Ed moved to walk past them again, but the taller boy shoved him back. He tripped over his feet, but caught his balance, letting go of Colin’s hand and gently pushing his chest so he took a few steps behind him. “You were on my rugby team last year, mate. We fucking showered together. You were probably eyeing me every time, taking little snapshots for your wank bank later on. That’s disgusting.” Ed crossed his arms and smirked at the boy. “Sorry man, you’re not my type.” “Yeah, I guess your type is scrawny freaks with big noses and fucked up eyes,” the boy said, eyeing Colin, who was holding back tears with all his might. “Fuck off, you pathetic cunt,” Ed said, shoving the boy. He knocked him onto the floor, but he was immediately back up on his feet, punching Ed square in the jaw. Ed punched back, hitting him in the eye. The next punch thrown missed Ed’s face and hit the locker behind him. The boy pulled back in pain, and Ed took his chance to punch the boy in the stomach, As he doubled over, Ed grabbed his head and kneed him in the face, but the other boy was on him, pinning him up against the locker and punching him repeatedly. Ed’s arms were pinned but he kneed the boy in the crotch, making him let go and grab himself. The taller boy was on Ed again, shoving his face into the locker and holding his arms behind his back. The heavier boy found his bearings and punched Ed in the side a few times, before the other boy let go and let Ed collapse in a heap on the floor. The taller boy spit blood onto the floor and wiped his mouth. “If I ever catch you two poofs fucking making out again, you’re fucking dead. Same goes for you,” he said turning to Colin. The boys turned and left. Once they were out of the locker room, Colin crawled over to Ed and grabbed his face. “Oh my god Ed, oh my god,” tears were streaming down his face, “What the fuck Ed?! I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry I didn’t help you, I froze. I was so scared. Are you okay? Is anything broken?” Ed chuckled, then made a pained expression, as it hurt to laugh. “I’m fine Cozzie.” “No you’re not! You’re bleeding everywhere and I think your nose is broken! How are your ribs? God I’m so sorry Ed.” Ed sat up and leaned against the row of lockers. He poked his ribs and winced. Bruised, but not broken. He touched his nose, and winced again. Possibly broken. He looked down at his fingers; blood. He looked up at Colin and smiled. He touched Colin’s face, getting some blood on it. “I’m okay, Cozzie, really. It just really set me off when he said those things about you. And don’t be sorry, I didn’t want you getting into it. I never want you to. I’m okay, I swear.” “Oh god Ed… we are so fucked.” Ed spit some blood out onto the floor next to him. “We kinda are. But we’ll be okay, I promise,” he said with a smile. Colin was bawling now. “Don’t cry, c’mere love.” He stretched his arm out and Colin curled up under him, clinging to him, crying. Ed held him and kissed his head. “You don’t have to be scared, we’ve got each other, and we’ve got friends, bullies never come out on top. And you’re safe, I promise.” “B-but.. you’re not. You’re not safe, Ed. I don’t want you to have to defend me. I don’t want you to have to fight and get beat up all the time. Why do they have to be like that? It’s not fair, why can’t they just let us be happy?” “They’re jealous, ‘cause they’re not happy. We’ll figure something out, Cozzie. We’ll be okay.” Colin kept crying into Ed’s chest, so Ed held him and hushed him. They heard the locker room door open again, and quickly moved away from each other. Thankfully, it was Thom and Nigel. “Holy shit, what the fuck happened?!” Thom exclaimed, hurrying over to Ed and examining his face. “Some homophobic pieces of shit kicked my arse, man,” Ed chuckled. “It’s not fucking funny Ed, something could be broken!” “Nothing’s broken, Thom, relax.” “So… you got caught, huh?” Nigel said, wetting a paper towel to clean Ed’s face. Colin was still in a heap next to Ed, curled up in a ball crying his eyes out. Thom turned to Colin, lifting his head and wiping the tears from his cheeks. “Yeah, by the end of the week the whole school will know. We’re totally fucked,” Ed said, leaning his head back against the lockers. Nigel knelt down in front of him and held his chin, gently wiping the blood from around his nose and eyes. Ed winced and inhaled sharply, but let Nigel clean him. “You okay?” Thom whispered to Colin. Colin shook his head as more tears fell from his eyes. Thom frowned at him, looking as if he wanted to cry too. “Well they can’t hurt you as long as there’s teachers around, so stay out of the shadows, okay?” Nigel said, examining Ed’s face and deciding one more wet paper towel would do the job. Ed nodded, and Nigel got up to go to the sink again. Ed turned to Thom and Colin, Thom was holding Colin’s head and Colin’s sobs were starting to lighten, his body still trembling but the crying slowing down. Nigel was in front of Ed again, patting his face lightly with the paper towel. He moved Ed’s head around and poked at his nose, Ed wincing and pulling away as a reaction. “S’not broken. You’re lucky.” Nigel stood up and offered a hand to help Ed up. Thom got up and pulled Colin up with him. Colin looked at Ed for a moment before hugging him and giving him a series of small kisses on the lips. “You guys are gonna have to be more careful with that from now on,” Nigel said. Colin frowned and Ed nodded. The boys made their way up the staircase and into their rooms. They all got into their pyjamas and slid into bed, Nigel going over when it would be safe to be alone with Colin with Ed, and it wasn’t often. After the hall monitors had gone to bed, Thom and Colin lied in their beds in silence. “Thom?” Colin whispered. Thom rolled over to face him, even though he couldn’t see him in the dark. “Yeah?” “Can I come over there?” “Yeah.” Thom scooted over to give Colin some room, and Colin was quickly under the blankets clinging to Thom. “I’m so scared, Thom.” Colin’s voice sounded small, and shaky. Thom held him and kissed his head. “I know, Cozzie. We’ve got you, okay? We’re not gonna let anything bad happen to you or Ed.” Colin just shoved his face into Thom’s chest. He fell asleep soon after, still clinging to Thom. Thom didn’t even feel any romantic feelings for Colin in that moment. He was just worried for his best friend. He saw what Ed was willing to go through for Colin, and he was nothing but thrilled that his two best friends had found a love so pure and real. He hadn’t an ounce of jealousy, only love for both of them. ***** Chapter 10 ***** The next day the boys went about their day quietly. They were trying to keep under the radar as much as possible. Ed still insisted on walking with Colin and sitting with him during classes, no one could say anything about them simply being next to each other, he reasoned. But there were whispers, and stares, and they were soon to realise that word was getting around about them. Ed’s lip was busted and there was a small bruise under his eye, so he wasn’t shocked that boys were asking each other about it. He caught Stanley’s eyes a few times, but that kid was the least of his problems. Nearing the end of the day, Thom, Colin, and Ed were in history class. It was the only class all three of them had together. They sat quietly, waiting for class to begin. Ed stared straight ahead, his head in his hand, Colin had his head down in his arms, covering his face, and Thom fiddled with a loose string on his jumper. A balled up piece of paper came flying from the back of the room and hit Colin on the head. He turned around and glared at whoever it was that threw it. Two boys he didn’t know were giggling and one mouthed to him, open it. He leaned down and picked up the paper from the floor, taking a breath before opening it. It was a crudely drawn picture of his face, with a disturbingly detailed drawing of a large, veiny cock ejaculating on him. His face turned red and tears stung at his eyes. He looked up and Thom was watching him with a concerned look on his face. He turned to Ed, who looked absolutely pissed. Ed held his hand out, gesturing for Colin to show him the drawing. Colin just shook his head and shoved the paper deep into his pocket, wiping at his eyes and swallowing his tears. Ed let his hand fall and shot a menacing glare at the boys at the back of the room. He then turned toward the front of the room as the bell rang for class to start. A few classes later, dinner time rolled around, and all four boys were eating in silence. Halfway through the meal, the boys who had fought with Ed plopped down right next to him. Everyone at the table but Ed jumped, wide-eyed and nervous. Ed just sighed and turned toward them. “What?” he asked, already bored. “Having dinner with your boyfriend?” the taller one teased. “Yes,” Ed answered bluntly, turning back to his food. “So you are gay for each other?” Both boys looked shocked, despite having already caught them kissing. Ed sighed and rolled his eyes. “Why are you so obsessed with us?” “I think he’s jealous,” Colin piped up, a sly grin on his face. All eyes were on him, shocked that he would be so bold. “What did you say you twerp?” “You’re just jealous because no one in their right mind would ever put up with you for more than a few minutes,” he said loud enough for half the cafeteria to hear. “Colin, don’t,” Ed whispered, but it was too late. The taller boy got up and shoved Colin onto the ground. Ed immediately stood up but the other boy had his arms hooked behind him. He struggled to get free but the fact was, the boy was stronger than he was. “I’ll have you know I have a girlfriend. A girlfriend, with a pussy, and tits.” “She must be pretty desperate, to put up with the likes of you,” Colin spat. The boy was on him in an instant, pouncing on him and grabbing him by the hair, punching him in the face. As he swung back to deliver another punch, Thom was on him, grabbing his arm and ripping it all the way back until his shoulder made and audible pop. Everyone always forgot how strong Thom was. Quick, too. “Ah, shit!” the boy cried out, falling off Colin and grabbing his shoulder. “You want some too, lazy eye?” he threatened, But before he could make a move, Thom was attacking him like a feral cat, giving Colin the opportunity to scramble to his feet. Meanwhile, Nigel had crept up behind the other boy and kicked him between the legs, causing him to let go of Ed, who quickly turned around and started hitting him. Nigel joined in too, and before both boys could be beaten completely senseless, a teacher finally interjected. He yelled for the boys to break it up as he came running across the cafeteria, but it was no use. Within a few minutes more teachers had showed up and they all ripped the boys off each other and escorted them to the principal’s office. After each boy explained their side of the story to the principal, it was decided that all six of them would be suspended for a week. The principal called each of their parents while they sent them each to their rooms to pack their things. All of them were worried of what their parents were going to say once they heard the news, but especially Ed. He was shaking as he packed his things. Colin tried to pack quickly so he could see him before he was picked up, but there was a teacher waiting right outside his door in case he tried to escape. He huffed and cried on his bed while Thom finished packing. Once Thom noticed him, he quickly hurried over to him and wrapped him up in a hug, kissing his head and his face. “We’ll be okay, Cozzie.” “Maybe we will, but Ed won’t.” “What makes you say that?” “His dad is… I really shouldn’t be telling you this, don’t tell him I told you, but his dad is like, abusive.” Thom bit his cheek, remembering the random cuts and bruises he’d randomly seen on Ed for years. “Shit…” “He’s gonna kick his arse when he finds out,” Colin said, sobbing. “Hey hey, come on. Our Ed is tough, and savvy. He’ll figure something out. He’ll be okay.” Colin lost it, clinging to Thom. “I don’t know what’s gonna happen to my boyfriend, Thom. What if I never see him again? Or what if he gets kicked out, and he’s homeless? What if his dad kills him?!” “I don’t know Cozzie, but I don’t think his dad is going to kill him. I’m sure you’ll see him again. It’ll be okay.” “I’m so scared, Thom.” “Me too.” ——— The drive home was silent, for all of the boys. Colin walked into his house, followed by his mother. He tried to make his way upstairs to his room, but his mum stopped him. “Colin, you know we have to talk.” “Right…” “I’m sure you’ve guess you’re grounded, for the entire week.” “Yes mum.” “No friends, no leaving the house.” “I understand.” “Good boy. And I want to hear what this fight was all about, when you’re ready to tell me.” Colin swallowed dryly. “Yes mum.” “Alright. You’re free to go.” Colin ran upstairs and into his room, where he found Jonny sitting on his bed waiting for him. He put his things down and Jonny cautiously walked up and hugged him without a word. Colin sighed and hugged him back, and for a moment he could have swore Jonny was crying. Jonny pulled away and looked at his brother’s face, eyeing the bruise under his eye. He leaned in and kissed it, as gently as he could. He lead Colin to his bed, where he got under the blankets and stared up at Colin expectantly. Colin understood, and crawled in next to him, Jonny immediately clinging to him like a baby koala. Jonny started to tremble, and Colin held him back. “Jonathan, are you crying?” “A little bit…” “Oh, don’t cry now. It’s okay. I’m okay.” “I heard you got in a fight and I was so scared.” “It’s okay, they got beat up way worse than I did.” “Did you beat them up?” Jonny asked, looking up at him with wide eyes. Colin blushed and chuckled. “Nah, Thom and Ed did. And our friend Nigel, you don’t know him.” “Are they okay?” “Ed’s face is a little messed up, from another fight, but they’re okay.” “You guys got into two fights?!” “Yeah… it’s been a rough few days.” “Why are you fighting so much?” Colin sighed and bit his cheek, looking down at his baby brother. “Some people… are just really ignorant and mean.” “What do you mean?” “They… don’t like that Ed and I are together.” “Why not?” “They’re jealous, I guess.” “That’s not fair! It’s not your problem nobody loves them!” Colin smiled. “Tell me about it.” ——— “Why the fuck are you fighting at school? You don’t get your arse kicked enough at home?” Ed’s dad yelled, shoving him so he hit the wood panelled living room wall, shaking the tiny room slightly. “I was sticking up for my friend. Besides, they started it.” “Why can’t your friend fight his own battles? Is he some kind of poof?” Ed shoved his dad back, but he barely moved. “Don’t you ever fucking talk about him like that!” “What do you care? You in love with this boy or something?” “Who cares if I am?!” “Godamnit Edward, I fucking knew it.” “You’re just made ‘cause mum never loved you.” “Get the fuck out of my house.” “What?” “Get out. Pack your shit, never show up around here again. You hear me?” “What about—“ “Go.” Ed started to cry, but hid it as best he could. He grabbed his already packed bag and his guitar and headed out the door. He walked aimlessly down the footpath for a moment, not sure where he could even go. ------ He showed up on Phil’s doorstep, tear-stained cheeks and nose red from the cold. Phil immediately ushered him in without question and gestured for him to sit down on the sofa. He sat next to him and they were silent for a moment, Phil letting Ed get his bearings before making him explain himself. “So, what the fuck?” Phil said, turning to him. “My dad kicked me out.” “What? Shit, why?” “He found out about me and Colin.” “How?” “We all got suspended from school for fighting, even Thom. These bullies found out about us and wouldn’t leave us alone.” “Did you kick their arses?” Ed smiled. “Yeah, we got ‘em pretty good.” “Good. You can stay here as long as you need, my guest room is all yours.” “Really? Thanks, man. Sorry, I just didn’t know where else to go. I’m dying to see Cozzie, but I’m sure his mum grounded him.” “Maybe you can call him tomorrow and fill him in.” “Yeah, good idea. Do you mind if I use your shower?” “You don’t even have to ask. You know where everything is, make yourself at home, you might be here for a while. I was just about to fix dinner.” Ed suddenly lunged forward and gave a Phil a big hug, squeezing him as tight as he could. “You’re a lifesaver, Phillip Selway.” ***** Chapter 11 ***** Chapter Summary This one is really short and all dialogue, sorry. The next morning Ed and Phil talked about their situation over breakfast. They came to the conclusion that Ed wouldn’t be able to go back to school, which Ed was genuinely thrilled about, until he remembered he’d be leaving his friends behind. Phil told him he’d have to get a job if he wanted to continue living with him, and he agreed to start looking for one the next day. He rang Colin to tell him the news and see if he was okay. The phone rang four times, and Jonny answered. “Hello?” “Hey Jon, it’s Ed.” “Hey, do you want to talk to Colin?” Ed chuckled. “Yeah, how’d you know? Is he around?” “Lucky guess. Yeah I’ll get him.” Ed waited a moment, before hearing his boyfriend’s voice. “Ed! Oh my god, are you okay?” “I’m fine, actually.” “What happened with your dad?” “Well, it’s a long story. But… I guess I live with Phil now. And I can’t go back to school. And I’m worried about leaving you there without me.” Colin paused for a moment. “What… the fuck?” “I know.” “Well… you don’t have to worry about me.” He heard Colin smile through the phone. “What?” “I told mum about why we were fighting and stuff and… she’s transferring me. To the school attached to Jonathan’s, so I’ll see him every day.” “What! That’s so lucky!” “I know, and guess what else.” “What?” “Since Thom lives so close, he’s seeing about getting transferred to the same school.” “Holy shit! What about Nigel?” “I don’t know about Nigel. He lives further away so if he’s lucky enough to get transferred it won’t be to the same school. I think Thom is supposed to ring him though.” “Holy shit Colin, this is all happening so fast!” “I know!” “Can I come see you today?” “Ugh, I’m sorry love, but I’m still grounded for the week for fighting. I think Thom is too.” “Oh… that sucks. That’s okay though, we can still talk on the phone every day, right?” “Yeah, I’ve still got phone privileges.” “And I’ll see you next week?” “Of course! As soon as I’m free I’m all yours.” “I can’t wait. I love you so much Colin. Things have somehow worked out way better than I ever could have dreamed.” “I love you too, Ed. We’re really lucky, aren’t we?” “I think we’re the luckiest blokes in the world.” ***** Chapter 12 ***** Chapter Summary Final chapter! By the end of the week, Ed had found a job as a bell hop. He had a week before he had to start working, and Colin and Thom had a week before they had to go to their new school. Thom had found out that Nigel was transferring as well, but to a different school further away. They weren’t sure if they’d see much of Nigel, but that was okay because now they could have their real drummer around for practices. Ed often wondered about that Stanley kid, what a creep. He brought him up to Colin sometimes but Colin just told him to shut up. The boys were all at Phil’s flat, waiting for Jonny to get out of school so they could start band practice. Phil and Thom were in the basement, Colin and Ed up in Ed’s room, cuddling on the bed, listening to one of Ed’s Duran Duran records. Ed was quietly singing along, Colin’s ear to his chest, listening to it vibrate as he sang. “Y’know Ed,” Colin lifted his head to look up at his boyfriend, “you’ve got a lovely singing voice.” “Ya think?” “Yeah, it’s quite nice. You should sing louder.” “I’m too embarrassed.” “Oh, don’t be ridiculous.” Colin reached up and kissed Ed on the jaw. Ed smiled at him and rolled him over, kissing him sweetly. Their kisses soon went from delicate and romantic to hot and needy, and Ed’s hands roamed Colin’s body, eliciting small moans from him and making him squirm. Ed pulled away and looked down at Colin, eyes half-lidded, twirling his hair with his fingers. “Y’know… Cozzie… we haven’t gone all the way yet.” Colin’s heart raced. “Yeah…” “Do you want to?” “I mean… you know I’ve wanted to for the past three years,” Colin chuckled, “I’ve just been too scared.” “Are you still too scared?” “I’m… nervous, but… no. I think… I’m ready, Ed.” “I’m nervous too,” Ed said, kissing Colin on the forehead and getting up to lock the door. He crawled back on top of Colin and kissed him gently. Colin was trembling beneath him, so he kissed all over his face, and trailed down his neck. “I’ll be gentle, we’ll go slow, okay? I’m gonna make you feel so good Cozzie, do you trust me?” “I trust you with my life, Ed O’Brien.” Ed smiled and removed Colin’s shirt before removing his own, then started kissing, sucking and biting, all over his torso. Colin moaned and squirmed beneath him, beginning to relax and stop shaking. His hands found Ed’s hair, and he guided his head further down. Ed undid his trousers and pulled them off, his boxers coming off with them. He eyed Colin’s erection, which was throbbing and leaking precum. “Damn, Cozzie, you’re ready.” “I’m about to have sex with the most beautiful man on Earth, of course I’m ready.” Ed smiled and moved toward’s Colin’s cock, but he stopped him. “Hey, I wanna see you too,” Colin said, biting his lip and eyeing Ed’s crotch. “As you wish,” Ed said with a smirk, and removed his trousers and boxers. “God, Ed, please don’t kill me with that thing,” Colin said blushing and staring at Ed’s erection. Ed blushed. “I told you I’d be gentle,” he said, leaning down to kiss and suck at Colin’s hipbones and thighs. He licked the precum off Colin’s tip, making Colin inhale sharply and buck his hips forward. Ed stopped for a moment, reaching for the bedside table, puling a bottle of lube and a condom out of the drawer. “Where did you get those?” Colin asked, eyes wide. “Uh… from the shop?” “So you were planning this all along, huh?” “Well, I knew it’d happen eventually, I wanted to be prepared.” Colin giggled as Ed lubed up his fingers and went back to his spot between Colin’s legs. Colin spread his legs, inviting Ed to do what he couldn’t wait for. Ed kissed and nipped at Colin’s thighs as he massaged his entrance with a wet finger. Colin’s eyes squeezed shut and he bit his lip until he tasted iron. He gripped Ed’s hair so tight he worried for a moment he was hurting him, but as Ed’s finger slipped inside him he didn’t care. “Shitshitshit, oh my god, Ed,” Colin whined, breathing heavily, trying his best not to squirm too much. Ed stayed silent and continued to finger Colin, eventually adding a second finger and making a scissoring motion, stretching him. When Ed finally added a third finger, Colin cried out. “You okay?” Ed asked, still massaging his prostate. Colin couldn’t form words but he looked down at him and nodded furiously, still biting his lip. Ed smirked and went back to kissing at the base of Colin’s cock. After a few more thrusts of his fingers, Ed pulled out of Colin, Colin whining at the sudden emptiness. He went for the lube again, squirting some into his hand and lubing himself up, adding the leftover lube to Colin’s entrance and sliding the condom on. He crawled on top of Colin, who was looking up at him with not want, but need in his eyes. Ed guided his cock towards Colin’s entrance with one hand, while his other hand was on Colin’s cheek, his thumb caressing Colin’s cheekbone. “You ready?” he whispered, looking at Colin lovingly. “Yeah,” Colin breathed. Ed pushed his tip inside, earning a squeak from Colin. He pushed himself halfway in, then adjusted so Colin’s leg was over his shoulder. He slowly inched his entire length inside him, Colin moaning and cursing. He finally hit Colin’s prostate, and Colin cried out, “Ohfuckjesusgoddamnit, Ed.” “Does it hurt?” “Not anymore, please don’t stop.” Ed did as he was told, slowly pumping in and out of Colin. The noises coming from Colin’s mouth were too much, and he sped up his pace, which only made Colin louder. Colin gripped Ed’s waist, digging his nails into him. Ed bit his lip and lost control of his movements, as he fucked Colin into the mattress as hard as he could. “Ed, I’m gonna…” Colin squeaked, and Ed immediately understood, his hand finding Colin’s tip and stroking it a few times before Colin spilled over his hand and his stomach. The way Colin clenched when he came sent Ed over the edge as well, and he came inside him. They both stayed in that position for a moment, breathing heavy and looking at each other. Ed was the first to smile, and Colin smiled back, both of them grinning wide and giggling. Ed pulled out of Colin and kissed him on the forehead. He pulled the condom off, tied it, and tossed it in the bin under his bedside table. He got up and searched around the room for a moment, finding a dirty shirt and cleaning Colin’s stomach and his hand with it. He tossed the shirt to a corner of the room and lied down next to Colin, putting his arm around him and pulling him in for a kiss. “Ed,” Colin said, catching his breath still, “that was unbelievable… I want to do that every day for the rest of my life.” Ed smirked. “Yeah, me too. Maybe next time you can be on top.” “I’d like that.” “Let’s get a shower, we’re gross.” “Yeah.” They put their discarded trousers back on. Ed peaked out the door to make sure the coast was clear, and they hurried across the hall to the bathroom, stripping once more and getting in the shower. As they washed each other, they got distracted, and kissed until they’d been in there for nearly half an hour. They heard a pounding at the door, and in unison they shouted, “What?” “Are you guys in there together?” Phil shouted through the door. He heard Colin giggle. “Piss off,” Ed shouted, “what do you want?” “Jonny’s here, get your arses downstairs.” “Two minutes!” Ed shouted, smiling at Colin. Phil rolled his eyes and went to the kitchen to make tea while he waited for the lovebirds to finish. ——— Thom was in the basement tuning his guitar, when Jonny came down to greet him. “Jon Jon! I haven’t seen you in forever!” Jonny put his guitar down and ran up to hug Thom. “I’ve missed you so much, Thom Thom.” Thom wrapped his arms around him and squeezed. They held each other for a while before Jonny broke away. “I was thinking… since you’re not going to Abington anymore… do you want to… um…” “Please tell me you want to get back together.” Jonny grinned and nodded. “Yes, god, Jonny, of course I do!” Thom grabbed Jonny’s face and kissed him, Jonny smiling into the kiss. They didn’t hear Phil come downstairs, mug of tea in hand. “Goddamnit,” he said, covering his eyes, “I can’t escape it.” The boys pulled away and looked at him. Jonny blushed. “Sorry Phil.” “Where’s Colin and Ed?” Thom asked. “Getting out of the shower,” Phil answered, mortified. “Ew!” Jonny squeaked. “That’s hot,” Thom said, eyeing Jonny. “Thom! No it’s not,” Jonny said, shoving him. “Maybe not to you.” Ed and Colin meekly came down the stairs, Colin in Ed’s clothes, which were much too big for him. “Oh hey, the lovebirds are finally ready for band practice,” Thom teased, puckering his lips. “Shut up Thomas,” Ed said, shoving him out of the way and heading for his guitar. “Hi Jonathan, how was school?” Colin asked. “Fine,” Jonny said awkwardly. Colin bit his cheek. “Sorry… you got here at an awkward time.” “S’okay, you’re gonna have to deal with me and Thom now, I’ll get you back,” Jonny said, eyeing Thom, who gave him a smirk. “Are you guys…?” “Yeah,” Jonny said with a smile. Colin gave Thom a knowing look. “Good.” They set up for practice and ran through their old songs, Thom adding a new one in. Jonny impressed everyone, playing better every time they heard him, despite not having been around for practices while the others were in school. Phil said it was the best practice they’d had in a while, and everyone agreed. They finished the night with one of Phil’s gourmet dinners and a bottle of gin. As Colin drifted to sleep under Ed’s arm, he smiled to himself. He swore he was the happiest he’d ever been, and he couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his life like this.
