In order to heal, she travels to Japan to stay with her friend and pen-pal Umehito Nekozawa. Follow her as she adjusts to being a part of the supernatural world and a part of the host club? Notes I do not own OHSHC or any of its characters or plots. This fic will included swearing, violence, magic, past rape/non-con, assault, past torture, underage relationships (with people the same age, +/- a year). More may be added later, but will be tagged. This story will be a combination of the anime and manga. Unless otherwise stated, assume the characters are speaking Japanese, as this takes place in Japan. Despite this, everything is written in English and honorifics won't be used in Matilda's POV except for dialog. However, I don't know enough about Japan and Japanese culture, so this will be somewhat Americanized. Main character is technically a self-insert OC, but a version of me that lines up with my nightmares and the existence of magical beings. I decided that this fic takes place in a parallel universe where things don't match up 100%. 'Pineapple' tech is everywhere, its 2004, supernatural creatures exist and have their own secret society within ours. Chapter Notes https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/ Census_Regions_and_Division_of_the_United_States.svg Here is what I used to determine where the plane is. A flight calculator had the plane going from Boston to a little above San Francisco, which takes about 6 hours. The whole flight took 14 hours, with a 14 hour time difference (13 hours during daylight savings). Leaving Friday afternoon from Boston, a nonstop flight will land around 6 pm Saturday night in Tokyo. See the end of the chapter for more notes Friday, December 3, 2004 2:30 PM EST Matilda's POV Planes are weird. I've been in some before for a family vacation, but this one was on a whole new level. The other planes had been small commercial planes only traveling down the East Coast. This one was a private jet owned by the Nekozawa family. Umehito had it sent over with a maid and a bodyguard to help me pack what I wanted shipped over. Having servants wait on me makes me uncomfortable, but I better get used to it. Ume said I'd be staying with him and his family while they got my place ready. I'm glad I'm staying with him for a while, even if it's only a few days. He promised to help me adjust to the social and cultural expectations, even though I've been learning about them over the last few years. Japan is very different from the U.S. after all. Part of me is sad that I'm moving to the other side of the globe, especially since I'm leaving my family behind. I'll miss them a lot, but this is a chance for everyone to heal after this summer. Mom understood that leaving was best for my health and happiness, even though she wished that wasn't the case. I wasn't going to get better with constant reminders everywhere, and she's always said that she'll support me if it’s what I want. Even if that means leaving her. She's been so supportive, going so far as to let me get emancipated so I can legally function by myself since I'm still underage. At least I stayed until my birthday had past. Another part of me is relieved that I'll be away from her, as callous as that seems. I hate having to hide so much from her, we've always been close, but I can't tell her just how much things have changed since July. How do you tell your mom that you're no longer human? That you can tell how much your family hurts when they look at you. I know they don't mean it, but it's depressing when your parents and brother get sad whenever they look at you. Thankfully Umehito doesn't have the same reaction. "Miss?" Startled out of my thoughts, I look at Mika, the maid Umehito had sent over. "Miss, we've taken off, you're free to move around now. Would you like any refreshments?" She asked in Japanese. Thinking it over, I replied in the same language, "Um, some tea and a bread roll, please. Thank you." Not what I usually eat in the middle of the afternoon, but I'm supposed to be eating what I would be in the new time zone. On school days, I wake up around 5 and have tea with some bread or toast before I stretch, meditate, and get ready for the day. She bowed and went to get what I asked for. Luckily the flight was nonstop, but it’s going to take nearly 14 hours. Unfortunately, I could only take a small nap, because we're going to arrive at night, so I can adjust to the new time zone a bit easier. I've been slowly waking up later over the past week to help the adjustment, but I'll have been awake for nearly 22 hours. Mika walked over and gave me my wake-up snacks. "If you'd like to change your watch now, it is currently 4:42 am at our destination." "Thank you, Mika. In case I forget, would you bring me some toast and more tea in 2 hours? I'm going to stretch and meditate before settling down to read. And I usually have a fuller breakfast around 7 after getting ready on school days." "I'll be sure to bring it to you then, is there anything you want, you would you prefer a surprise?" Tilting my head in thought, "I'd like some fruit, but you can decide what else to add." "I will see to it. Please enjoy yourself." With a quick bow, she walked off to the stewardess's area. Saying a quick prayer over my tea, I start sipping it slowly. I usually use this time to plan for my day (so I don't worry about it while mediating) but I'm really just going to be relaxing for the whole flight. For the next 6 hours we'll be flying over the U.S., but after that it's all water until we reach Japan. All I really need to do in that time is stay awake and stretch frequently. At most I'll be able to take a quick nap around 3, but it can only be half an hour long. Picking at the bead roll, I slowly eat it and finish my tea while looking out the window. A glance at my watch tells me its 5:30 AM, time to start my stretches. I pull myself away from the view of the southern part of the Midwest, probably Ohio or Indiana. Standing, I go through my stretches, before laying on the couch and stretching my back muscles. Finished with those, I sat up and got comfortable to meditate. The world slowly fell away from me as I relaxed, focusing on my inner self: my memory warehouse. I had learned of this concept from one of my favorite Stephen King movies and thought it would help me meditate. I chose to organize my thoughts and memories into a library. There was in intake at the entrance, which contained unorganized thoughts. I picked up the "night's" batch and began to shelve them properly. Once that was done, I went into one of the back rooms, the one I used to balance myself magically. This room was my favorite. It contained the 7 elements: light, shadow, fire, water, air, earth, and energy/ spirit. Here, spirit is myself. I walked over to the image of a 7-pointed star that was on the grass in the middle of the room and sat in its center. Letting the elements flow through and around me, I focused on balancing the amounts in my body and letting any excess flow out of me. Once balanced, I walked out of that room and slowly became aware of my surroundings again. Looking around, I noticed a bottle of water on the table, that must have been put there by Mika. Grabbing it and taking a few sips, I looked for the time. See as it was only 6:15, I pulled out my Japanese copy of Order of the Phoenixand got comfortable. What seemed like a minute later, Mika brought me my breakfast, which consisted of an orange, eggs over rice, and a bowl of vegetable soup. Not something I would normally eat for breakfast, but it's what I probably will be eating for the next few months. Surprisingly, the three foods went well together, even though the soup functioned as a drink. But if that's the case, I'll have to insure I drink some chocolate milk after my workouts. Need that calcium somehow, and yogurt is weird. Once I finished my second breakfast, I went back to reading. The remainder of the flight was spent reading, except for my stretching breaks and lunch around 12:30. "Miss?" Mika interrupts, standing a few feet away. "You need to buckle in, we'll be landing shortly." Nodding, "Okay, thank you for telling me." With that I sat up and buckled into my seat while Mika walked to her seat to do the same. Looking out the window, I was surprised to see we were over land again. I'm glad I decided to read, time past by so fast I forgot to take my nap. As we landed and deplaned, I was relieved that most of my belongings would be retrieved by other servants and moved to my house, so I didn't need to worry about them today. I only had to go through immigration with my carryon bag. Because of Umehito's preparation, all my paper work was in order and it only took 15 minutes to reach the Arrival Lobby where Ume and his personal valet (A/ N: this is the male equivalent of a lady's maid. In this story personal servants also serve as a bodyguard in public) were waiting. 'Oh shit, what do I do?' Over the years, the two of us have grown close, but we're from two different cultures. Not to mention, other than him visiting me in the hospital, this is the first time we've met physically. Part of me just realized that this is what Mom felt like: panic of her daughter living on the other side of the plant with a stranger. 'But then again, all my instincts tell me I can trust him. And they've never been wrong before.' No listening to my instincts got me into this mess, so listening to them is my best bet. Subtlety looking him over, I realize that he's just as nervous as I am. Not to mention uncomfortable in black jeans and hoodie to shield himself from the harsh lights. Thankfully, the sun should have set before he traveled here. Taking a deep breath, I walk closer to him, letting him see me for the first time in months. After giving a short bow and greeting, I smile, glad to finally be here.  "Maeve! I'm so glad you made it safely." Surprisingly, he opens his arms and steps forward for a hug. Stepping into it, I couldn't help but relax. "Me too. I'm happy that I'm finally here." We both stepped away: public displays of affection are frowned upon here, luckily most people don't recognize him here. "Why don't we get something to eat now, do you have a preference?" "Not particularly, just somethings fast, the flight was long and I'm sure neither of us want to stay here more than we have to." He nodded, “Why don’t we get some ramen then. It’s quick and will warm you up before we head to the car.” “That’s sounds great.” With that, we locate one of the ramen shops in the airport. Umehito ordered for both of us, and we slurped them down. Once finished, we walked to the limo for the long drive to the Nekozawa Estate. It was a fairly comfortable vehicle, as expected of the ridiculously rich. “Hopefully you can get a good night’s rest; we have a busy day tomorrow. In the morning we’ll go see your house, so you can decide how you want it furnished. Then we have a clan meeting that night.” Confused, I looked towards Ume, “We? Why am I going to a meeting with your clan?” Nervously, he answered, “Technically, you’re a part of it now.” At my startled look, he continued, “When I visited you in the hospital, I made an oath to serve you: I promised to do everything I could to help you and keep you safe and happy. These oaths are very serious here, it’s why my parents agreed so easily to help you like we have. Now that we’re going to be near one another on a regular basis, I can do it probably. But how exactly I phrase things, depends on if the Clan approves of you.” ‘Well, that explains why this was so easy.’ Wanting more information, I asked, “What do you mean?” He took a deep breath, probably because I won’t like this explanation. “My oath from before requires me to do whatever I can for you. But there is a ritual that is done to seal the oath and make us both aware of the terms. I want to make it clearer and more exact, but doing so will give you my position in my Clan. Because of our friendship and your tutelage, I am the most magically strong member of our family: I’m next in line to lead the Clan. “However, my oath puts you at a higher station than me, because I believe that you are. That will make you the head of our Family and Clan, despite us not marrying.” I’m not sure I’m processing this right, because it’s sounds like Umehito just made himself my servant. Not something I want. “What?”, I asked in shock. Unsure exactly what I was asking, he started to clarify everything, which is what I wanted anyway. “The Nekozawa Clan decides its next leader based on 3 things: Magical Power, Political and Monetary standing, and skill with a weapon. Our branch, the Main Branch, of the Clan has the highest political standing and I’ve already added to our wealth. Mother has trained me in Swordsmanship from a young age. But more importantly, I’m the strongest magically than anyone in the past 5 generations. “Despite all of that, you are stronger than I am magically. And after the attack, many would argue that you are stronger physically and mentally. That alone overpowers my claim. But once you add just how much you’ve improved your own wealth over a few short months… “Me swearing myself to you adds you to the family and also raises your political and social status in our community. But the Clan, and my Uncle in particular, believes you aren’t worth that. That it is a shame on us that I put myself beneath a woman, let alone an American woman. They may have accepted you as my wife, but we both know that won’t happen.” Sighing, I think it all over. I may have agreed to an arranged political marriage between us, but that was before he told me that he sees me as above him. I can’t comfortably be in a romantic relationship with someone that sees themselves as below me. I sighed, “I don’t want that. I didn’t come here to make you a servant or become the Head of your Clan. I’m already the Head of my family as far as our community is concerned.” He gave me a small smile, “I know you don’t. That’s part of the reason why my parents don’t have a problem with you or my oath. They've heard enough about you, that they know you won't take advantage of me. Once the meeting is over, we can discuss the particulars before the ritual. Afterwards, I’ll meet with the Clan or just the Current Head to tell them the few details they need to know. After that, it really isn’t their business.” That, unfortunately, convinced me to accept this. It's what Umehito wants, so I can deal with it. But thinking about his Clan… “Alright. I’m guessing I’m going to have to prove myself some way big?” He nodded, sensing my reluctance, “Yes. They’ll probably ask for a demonstration or challenge you to a duel. Best case scenario: you and my uncle duel and you don’t hold back. It will silence them all and show them you don’t care for their games. “After that, they’ll give their opinions and likely set up a debutante ball for you.” I rolled my eyes. Of course these people would go from hating me one minute, to celebrating me the next, if only for their own benefit. Surprisingly, that discussion took the whole trip. We stopped without me even noticing. Mika opened the door for me and I stepped out, only to stare at the mansion before me. It was a Gothic four story building, something unexpected for a Japanese home. Although, Umehito is part Russian. He stepped out after me and led me up the front steps, where another maid held open the door. This inside was beautiful, if a bit dark, but I loved it. I was supposed to meet with Ume's parents, but the maid said they were out. Ume shrugged, before leading me upstairs. Apparently, they gave me the room right next to his. I was exhausted by this point, so I barely paid attention to it. I went straight to the bathroom for a quick shower, before putting on a nightgown and going to bed. I could deal with everything else tomorrow. Chapter End Notes The chapter title was based off the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy. ***** New Beginning ***** Chapter Summary Matilda faces a her first day in Japan. She meets Umehito's parents, tours her new house, and faces the Nekozawa Clan! Chapter Notes Sorry about the long wait. Bought a house and needed to move. Plus, we lost power in half the house, so couldn't get this out as fast as I wanted. Enjoy! See the end of the chapter for more notes Sunday,_December_5,_2004 Waking up, I was a little disoriented. I wasn't entirely sure where I was or what woke me. A knock on the door startled me back to the present. Sitting up and rubbing the sleepies out of my eyes, I heard, "Miss? It is time to wake for the day, you have much to do." Realizing it was the maid Ume assigned to me, I rolled out of bed and went to open the door. Unexpectedly, Mika walked right in. I guess it’s the norm for servants to help rich people get ready for the day? Maybe I can negotiate that once I'm moved in my place. She went over to my suit case and started looking for an outfit that was suitable for the day. "You can wear your clothes this morning for visiting your house and running errands, but there will be an outfit waiting for you to change into once you return for the Clan meeting." I would rather not wear multiple outfits in a day, but I could understand the logic. I might get dirty at the house, so might as well be somewhat comfortable. But I probably should look presentable for these fools if I wanted them to even consider accepting me. I really don't need their approval for myself, but I know Umehito would benefit if they did. He's more important than my pride. Mika chose black fleece leggings and a green long-sleeved, knee-length dress for me to wear. Once I used the facilities and changed, she helped pin my hair out of my face and put on minimal makeup. Once done, she led the way to the dining room for breakfast. On the way there, I began thinking, I don't know if I'll ever get used to this, let alone grow to like it. Sure, having someone help me make sure things match and do things quicker makes it easier to face a busy day. But at the same time, I want to do things myself and I don't really enjoy ordering others around. But as long as she doesn’t try to dress me herself, we should be okay. It didn't take too long before she was leading me to the dining room for breakfast. Thankfully Umehito met us in the hall, dragging me out of my head and making sure I wouldn't have to meet his parents alone. His parents were already seated when we arrived, while his sister was absent, probably still asleep. Umehito greeted his parents before turning to introduce me. "Maeve, you've met my Father, Kazuo. This is my Mother, Kira. Mother, I'd like you to meet Matilda." Times like this, I'm really glad I managed to turn my empathy visual; I could see the hostility and doubt rolling off his mother, feeling it would only cause me to escalate the situation. I bowed respectfully, before taking my seat. Once we were all severed and began our meal, Ume's father started a conversation that was a little too tense for breakfast. "Welcome Matilda, you seem to be doing a lot better since I last saw you." I nodded once, "Yes, all my injuries healed well." "I'm glad. Although I was mainly referring to you change in status," he said with hidden amusement, seemingly aware of his wife's displeasure. "You've managed to gain millions, raising you out of poverty. Not to mention gaining the loyalty of my son." Umehito frowned at his father, "She had my loyalty long ago." He waved off his son's words, "Yes, yes. But only now has she learned the lengths of that loyalty. She's soon to be officially part of our family, although I would have preferred her to be your wife." While his words were a bit embarrassing, I appreciated his support. And while I wouldn't tell him as much, I agreed. I may not feel the type of love I felt was necessary for marriage, I do love Ume, and I wouldn't have been opposed to a political/arranged marriage with him. But that was when we were still equals. Sensing a dispute, I just sat quietly, eating my breakfast with amusement. Umehito's mother looked at her husband with a raised brow, "You seem awfully sure of her position." Ume sighed. It seems like he's had this discussion many times. "She's magically strong and increased her financial and social standing in just a few months, that alone deserves their respect. Her legal maneuverings should add to it." "She's weak and lacks loyalty," she replied. "She left one family and ruined the other, especially her father." Later on, I would realize that she was likely trying to provoke me, testing my character. But right then, I only felt angry and insulted. "That man was never my father," I said, my voice cold. Trying to keep my magic under control, "No parent could possibly do such things to their child. His wife and daughter never care for me, despite pretending otherwise. I was a fool for ignoring my instincts regarding them I'll admit, but that only shows how unlike a family they were towards me. Their ruin was a product of their own actions or inactions." Taking a calming breath, I continued, "As for my real family, they understand that our time apart is best for us all. Children go on foreign exchange trips all the time, mine is just a bit longer than most." She sneered, "I see you don't deny being weak." I mentally rolled my eyes, "If you think me weak despite knowing what I've been through, nothing I say will change your mind. I survived when many say I shouldn't have and did what was needed to protect my family." Looking down to finish my meal, I missed the looks Ume's parents sent each other. I hoped no one detected the lie within that. I knew one thing that might change her mind, but I wasn't about to implicate myself just to prove Kira wrong. All my actions since the attack have been to help my mother, emotionally and financially, before helping myself. Honestly, other than the pleasure of ruining that vile man, the only thing I did for myself was move here. And even that will help my mom heal as well. Thankfully, things stayed quite after that. Umehito finished his meal soon after I did, so we said polite goodbyes before leaving to go to the house Umehito got me. ~~~~~  Sitting in the car, I wondered if I'd get used to limos or whatever this technically was. It was a little unnerving not being able to see the driver or out the front windshield. But I suppose that’s just my paranoia. Although it was a little cool that you can look out the back windshield, depending on where you sat, and there were a lot of buttons. Now that I was somewhat calm, I thought over what just happened. With a groan, I asked, "Your mother just totally played me, didn't she?" He shrugged, "Probably, she's been reluctant to accept that I made an oath, especially since she hadn't met you. She wanted to see what kind of person you were for herself." I could understand that, Moms are usually protective of their children. Mine was reluctant to let me come here, it makes sense that his would be upset: he did bind himself to someone he only met once. I just hope she doesn’t hate me too much. If tonight goes well, I'll be spending a lot of time around Ume, at least for the next year. Just then my cellphone beeps. Taking it out, I see my mom replied to my message. Glad you made it safely, hope you slept well. Call or text me when you're up? Looking at Ume, I convey what it said. "I'm going to call her real quick, is that all right?" He nods, "Yeah we still have about 20 minutes until we get there." Cool, that gives me enough time to talk to her and an excuse not to do it too long. Hitting her speed dial, it rings a few times before she picks up. "Matilda! How are you sweetie?" "I'm alright Mom. The flight was long, but I spent most of it reading." "You sleep well? I know you passed out right after texting me." "Yeah, I slept alright, would have been better if I hadn't had to get up so early, but we have a lot to do today." "Oh? Anything fun?" I shrugged, despite her being unable to see it. "Sorta? We're on the way to see the house Ume arranged for me to stay at when I'm not visiting him. Then we have to look for some furniture and what not." "That doesn't sound to awful. But I'll leave you to it. Let me know how it is when you're done, okay?" "I will, but it might not be until tomorrow, depending on how exhausted I am when it's over. Give a hug to everyone for me?" "Of course, I love you hon." "Love you too, Mom. Later." "Later." Thankfully, it was a quick conversation. Just in time too. The driver pulled into a long driveway that ended in a circle. When he opened the door and I stepped out and saw the house for the first time, I couldn't believe my eyes. "Ume… this is not a house." He frowned as he stepped out next to me. "Yes, it is." "No. This is a mansion… or a small castle." But I suppose, if you live in huge places your whole life, you would consider a four-story mansion a small house. "Do you like it?" Sighing, "Yeah, I do." And I did. Despite its size and its extravagance, it was perfect. It was a perfect mix of Western Gothic and Traditional Japanese, inside and out. It was huge, arguably too huge, as I could never use all the rooms. Ume gave me a short tour, mostly telling me what was on each floor. The main level was mainly for public viewing; the center, north and south wings contained a large entrance hall, a ballroom, formal dining room and other such things. The east wing held the live-in servants' quarters as well as the laundry room and other such things. While the west wing contained the family dining room, the kitchens, and the secret entrances to the hidden underground tunnels. The tunnels were interesting, apparently, they had hidden nooks all throughout, but the highlights were the combat areas (warded to prevent accidents and cave- ins), a shooting range, a small water pool that was from a heated spring. The second floor (or first, depending where you are from) was similar to the first in that the closer to the center you were, the more public the area. There were offices, studies, game rooms, meditation rooms, an exercise room, the list went on. The third floor was simpler, it was divided into four wings of bedrooms and suites. One wing was for guest, usually those that stayed to late at a party and couldn't get home safely. Two wings, the north and south, were for frequent guests of the family: the north for the children's guests, and the south for the adults. The east wing was for family, and was mostly comprised of suites, including the two Master suites. But we would get back to that after seeing the final floor. The fourth floor was probably my favorite. I know my Mom would kill to come here if she knew that half of the floor was a library. It had a good supply of books but was just waiting to be filled with mine. There were also a few more mediation rooms, to be used by the family, unlike the other ones. I also spotted a few rooms that would be perfect for crafts, both magical and other. Ume had to drag me away, he still had to show me my suite after all. My suite, the Master usually reserved for the Mother, was bare, but it had potential. The main door, Western in style, opened to a common or sitting room. I would have to pick out some chairs, maybe a loveseat, and I hoped I could get and electric fire place, it would look great. The back wall was all traditional Japanese sliding doors. It opened to a large, but empty, space with a door on either side. This was clearly supposed to be the bedroom, and whatever bed I got would fit perfectly between the two large windows. The left side door led to a huge walk-in closet, full of shelves and draws I would need to fill. The right-side door led to a bathroom… sorta. Inside was similar to the bedroom: a door on the left and right, but there was a third next to a built-in vanity. The right door led to the toilet, which was usually separate like this in Japan. The left led to the separate shower and bath, but also had a small sauna. Apparently the third door led to the other Master suite, that was a mirror image of mine. Once I was finished looking around and planning what I would need to get, I turned to Ume. "Which room is yours?" A little embarrassed, he shrugged. "I figured I'd get a room in the South Wing." I snorted, "Don't be silly. You belong in the family wing." Shocked, "I'm your servant, technically I'd be downstairs." I leveled him a slightly disappointed look. "You were my friend first, so I would understand the South Wing. But I've considered you family for a while. You belong here. Besides, I'd feel better knowing someone I trusted was on the other side of that adjoining door." "That's for your spouse." I could tell he was shocked and a little upset, but I wasn't going to budge on this. "Then when I get one you can choose a different room. But for now, I'd feel better knowing you were close, and no one could accidently walk in on me. Or worse, do it on purpose cause the broke in." Luckily for him, he accepted that, and we spent some time figuring out some of the other rooms before starting to look for furniture. ~~~~ Upon returning to the Nekozawa Estate, I was rushed upstairs by Mika. Apparently, some people where on their way, even though the meeting didn’t start for another 2 hours. I needed to be presentable by then, in both forms. In my human form, I was to wear a kimono that was a deep purple with navy blue accents. My hair was tied into a bun, that was more of a puff, and I was given light makeup that flattered my face but didn't stand out much. My fairy form was more Western and personalized. The dress was ankle length, had long sleeves, and the top half of the back was open in a diamond, leaving space for my wings. The dress was navy blue silk from the knees up, covering my chest, with black lace over it covering my arms and legs. It showed off my wing, which were black with iridescent purple, blue, and green accents. My makeup was more dramatic in this form, accentuating my cheek bones, silver- black smoky eyes, and a dark red lipstick. My hair was free, waving down just brushing my shoulders and a headband of small silver roses kept it out of my face. I was to go down in my human form, and only transform if challenged. But even then, I wasn't sure if I would. I don't need to be in that form to use the abilities that came with it. Plus, my magic from being a witch was stronger, as I was more experienced with it. But we'll see how things play out. Unbelievably, getting ready actually took 2 hours, and it was time to face Umehito's Clan.   Chapter End Notes Okay, so I lied. She only got ready to meet the Clan. The meeting is in the next chapter, I promise. ***** Diplomacy? ***** Chapter Summary Matilda meets the Nekozawa Clan and makes an oath. Admittedly, I was nervous. I was never one for crowds and I usually hated being the center of attention. Plus, I found this whole situation ridiculous. I don't want to be the 'master' of my best friend or be part of his Clan; he's like family and I already rule my own, technically. Still, I care about Umehito, and it was only for his sake that I withstood this criticism and acted the 'perfect' young lady. I sat next to Umehito as his parents stood behind us. His sister was too young to attend this type of meeting, so she was upstairs getting a bedtime story from her maid. The meeting had started quietly enough. Ume had introduced me to the Clan, then went ahead to say was I was worthy of joining. He started off with how quickly I managed to change my social and fiscal status. Before adding how strong I am: by my survival after the attack and my magic abilities. He thought it was impressive that I was able to increase his knowledge as a witch, let alone another creature. Especially since he's been taught his whole life and has access to generations of knowledge. I found it strange how he didn't say just what I was. I'm sure some had heard all this before, so it wasn't like he was leaving out repeated information. The only reasonable explanation was that he wanted to give me some advantage if it came to a duel. After all, I know the challenger may be more likely to use water-based magic with the Clan being mainly Water Fairies. As long as I didn't transform too early, they wouldn't know that I'm mostly a Shadow Fairy, and can use this room against them. Even better, you can't tell I'm part Earth Fairy just by looking at me. After my introduction, the Clan began discussing if I was worthy enough. Predictably, it devolved into a heated debate. Most of the members didn't feel strongly one way or another but felt that there was no reason not to let me in. A few thought I'd be a huge asset, but others, particularly Ume's Uncle Manzo, felt like I was a disgrace. I wasn't going to argue. It seems I was accepted into Ume's immediate family, and I was happy with that. Unless I was challenged or asked to demonstrate my abilities, I was staying out of it. Listening in, I couldn't help but here Manzo exclaim, "It's a disgrace that he lowers himself to an American woman. One of those is bad enough!" Really? I can understand the feelings towards Americans, but dude, you just insulted half the Clan. At least his father, Kane, seemed to think he was being rude if his frown was anything to go by. But before he could reprimand him, Manzo continued. "Let's test her. Surely she isn't as strong as she believes." Receiving nods from most members, he turns to me with a sneer on his face. "I challenge you to a duel. Magic only." I stood, at least things were moving along. "Your terms?" "If you lose, you will have no further contact or association with our Clan. And for bringing you here, Umehito will be banished from the Clan as well." Well shit. I could handle any action against me, but why attack your nephew? Do you hate women that much? The Clan agreed to his terms, some reluctantly, causing Kira to stiffen behind me. I'm sure if I failed she would ruin my life. At least I have a reason to put real effort into this now. If it's needed. Seeing as I didn't want anything from these people, I merely nodded and stepped forward, ready to duel. My confidence startled Manzo, but he quickly hid it and motioned to the room to clear a space for us. Everyone stepped back, leaving a large circle clear for us to duel in. Once we both stepped inside, a transparent barrier appeared to protect the spectators and prevent interference. Before I had the chance to do anything, Manzo transformed, throwing a large icicle at me in the process. I stepped to the right, batting the ice away with my left hand. Really? Was that the best he could do? Hearing it shatter and not even bothering to transform, I slowly started to take control of the shadows behind him, while distracting him by throwing a few low powered fireballs. He throws a ball of water at one, extinguishing it. The second he stops with a small water shield, while he dodges the third. He's frustrated, probably at having to dodge, and throws four more icicles at me. I wonder if that's supposed to be a threat? Deciding to play with him a little, I take control of the air around the icicles, using it to force the off track and into the barrier. Seeing Manzo startled, I figured now was the best time to knock him down. Figuratively and literally. I gather air into a strong gust, adding emotional energy to it, to disorient and cause arrogance. Manzo, likely blind to the energy, uses his blue-green wings as a shield, directing the air around and over him, unknowingly allowing the energy to attach to him. While he was blinded by his wings, I sent a ball of water at him, hoping my plan worked. Thankfully it did. Slightly disoriented and believing water wouldn't negatively affect him, he lets it hit him while he prepares his next attack. He doesn't get the chance, as soon as the water hits him, he is knocked off balance and falls on his butt. The shadows follow my thoughts, springing up and around him like chains, keeping him pinned to the floor. When he fails to release himself, the barrier falls. I turn around to return to my seat, watching Ume try and reign in his amusement. His mother is relieved; hopefully know she'll realize I'll protect her son, regardless of his oath. Before I can sit down, Kane steps forward. "Miss Montgomery, you've won. Please release my son." I wave my hand and dismiss the shadows, but it takes a moment for Manzo to stand. Good. Kane frowns at him before turning back to me. "Welcome to the Clan. You have our approval to solidify your bond with my grandson. I do request that you inform us of the specifics once you've finished." Yeah no. You allowed your son to be that rude and disrespectful, without any sign of an apology? Umehito and I both agreed we wouldn't tell them everything. Not that I can say any of that. "Umehito will relay the relevant information later." Sure, we'll probably be done tonight, but rituals are tiring and I'm not going to keep him awake to please these guys. The elder nodded, reluctantly accepting of my words. "Now, what are your terms from winning the duel? My son neglected to ask before you began." Sighing internally, "Nothing." "Nothing?" He asked, confused and surprised. I smile politely, hopefully hiding my frustration with these people. "Yes. Nothing I would ask of you can be taken, only earned." There's nothing I really want from these people. Respect and accepting would be nice, but they are unneeded and can only be earned. "Very well," he said, impressed by my words. "Do to our Clan's rules, you now possess Umehito's standing. Should he accept control of the Clan once he is of age, you will take it in his stead." I bowed, showing my acceptance. A few pleasantries later, the meeting ended, and Ume and I could get down to this oath business. ~~~~   Ume and I walked to his quarters after deciding to use his private sitting room for this discussion.  Once there, he lit the logs in the fireplace while I wove a spell around us that prevented others from over hearing. Ume's rooms already had a decent amount of warding, in addition to the ones around the estate, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. With the fire lit and no other lights on, Ume removed him cloak and wig before settling on one of the arm chairs by the fire. Happy to bask in the shadows, I transformed before settling into the other armchair, carefully maneuvering my wings so I didn't crush them. Might as well be comfortable during a difficult conversation. "Hey, Ume?" I say to make sure I have his attention. Once he looks at me I continue, "I know we talked about it a little before, but I want to know why you're doing this. I know you feel strongly about it, which is why I went along with tonight. But for my piece of mind, before we negotiate, I would like a clearer answer." I knew that it was a lot to ask for, but considering he basically wants to give his life to me, I should have an answer. Plus, a good enough reason will likely prevent me from insulting him with my reluctance. It’s hard to disagree with decent reasons. He sighed, before giving me a wistful smile. "You probably didn't know, but when we first started talking, I idolized you." Shocked, I shook my head. Hopefully this was going somewhere and idolization wasn't his reasoning. "I saw what you posted about magic and I couldn't believe it. You understood magic like few do and had such a creative approach to it. And yet, you clearly had no knowledge of this world. I couldn't help but talk to you. While it was unintentional at the time, you taught me a lot. "The more we talked, the more I learned: about magic and you. Language aside, it was clear you were American, no one from here would be so aware of how weird they were and not try and hide it. You knew you were strange, that you liked different things and thought differently, but you embraced it! You were the reason I'm a little more myself in public than I used to be. And part of the reason I even tried to create the Black Magic Club when I got to high school." That was…flattering I guess. I know I taught him a lot, even when I wasn't officially teaching him. And he was right, I was mostly proud of my weirdness. Sure there were times when I doubted and wanted to conform if only to have more friends, but by the time I reached high school I gave up trying to be liked by everyone and act like I was no different than them. But if that’s his only reason… "After a while, I realized you were human in the sense that you had your strengths and weaknesses, virtues and vices. You may not be like others, but you still wanted to help whenever possible. You're kind and caring… who else would learn another language just because they thought it unfair that only one of a pair were communicating in their native language. Even now, you're trying to learn Russian when you're about to attend a Japanese school." He stopped, looking down for a moment before taking a deep breathe, "I think, in another time, one where we both made different choices… We would have gotten married, arranged or not." Oh shit. He isn't. "It's been years since we started talking, and in that time my idolization turned into love. I want to help you, protect you, and when you have things in hand, to stand by your side… "If I was a little different, I might not have sworn myself to you. I might have just asked if you would marry me in time. Even knowing that you currently don't and may never feel attraction to me or anyone else. You told me earlier I was like family, I think we could have made things work." He did. Damn, I knew he cared about me, but I was trying to ignore how deeply those feelings went for both our sakes. Still, what did he mean if he was different? Most people assume it's the Ace/Aro person that needs to change. Before I could ask, he answered. "I've always been somewhat submissive. You've been online enough to understand what that means. I trust you. You accept me for myself, even at my darkest. I don’t have to pretend around you or conform to society’s ideals when it’s just the two of us. I know you would do your best to keep me safe, especially now that you consider me family. "So to answer your question, I want to serve and there isn't anyone else I know that not only deserves it in my eyes but will have my best interest at heart while I do." Clearing my throat, “Well then. That seems like an acceptable explanation to me.” And it was. Sure it’s a little much, but as long as the terms protect us both and there’s an escape clause I’ll let him swear himself to me. “However, we still need to discuss the terms.” Ume nodded, relief flowing off him. "I know you want to serve and protect as much as possible, but do you have any other terms?" He shrugs, "You come first for me." I roll my eyes, really? "Alright. But if that's the case, you will tell me when something I do or ask makes you uncomfortable or you don't agree with it okay?" "Yes, but I'll probably do it anyway." "I know, but it will make me feel better if you communicate. I want you to take care of yourself too." He frowns a little, but I continue, "You can't serve me properly if you run yourself ragged." With a sigh, "You're right. Anything else?" "Yeah, you aren't going to ignore your family. Their schedules will be considered, but I want you to spend time with them without me around." "I can agree to that, but I would prefer that to happen when you are at your house or with future friends that you trust." Smiling at his willingness to compromise, "We can discuss each case as it happens, but I understand that. Next would be that we discuss any important decisions either of us want to make, but we usually do that anyway." "We do, but I'll try to make sure anyway." "One last thing, I don't know how permanent this oath is, and while I don't think they will, time can change people. So, if at some point we both want to, we can dissolve it." Ume frowned, upset that I considered dissolving the bond. But I think part of him realized how irresponsible it would be if we didn't. We are just teenagers, which is why I think this is a little crazy. He did understand, as he nodded. "That's all I can think of, but we can always discuss things after the fact if needed. So how do we do this?" He stood and prompted me to do so as well. "Essentially, I swear myself to you, you ask if I agree to the terms we discussed, and I agree." Sounds simple enough. Ume grabbed my left wrist with his left hand and had me grip his. Then he kneeled, turning our arms so my hand was on top as he did. With a bowed head, "I, Nekozawa Umehito, swear my life and magic to serve you, Montgomery Matilda Maeve. Do you accept my plea?" I took a deep breath, "I do. Do you agree to serve by the terms we just made?" "I do." Before he could stand, a swell of energy surrounded us. Our magic flared, before it rushed toward our joined hands. When they met I felt warmth beneath me palm as the energy clashed into our magic. When it all settled he stood and moved to step back. Just then I noticed something strange. "What's on your wrist." He looked down, slightly confused. On his previously clear and pale wrist was a black fairy star with a silver snake circling it.   ***** Questions and Maybe Answers ***** Chapter Summary Matilda wakes up the day after the ritual only to be confronted once again. Plus a recap from some soon to be friends Chapter Notes See the end of the chapter for notes Monday, December 6, 2004 Matilda rolls over in her bed, glad that she was able to sleep in a little. Realizing she didn't need to get up quite yet, she decided to think over the night before. The day was so busy, it’s worth taking the time to process properly. Neither she or her best friend had done a ritual like that before, so both were surprised when the brand appeared on Umehito's wrist. They had taken the time to figure out what it meant, besides the obvious marking him as hers. The fairy star, so named by the race that first used it, is a seven-pointed star. Humans generally used the version with overlapping lines, or just the outline. The form used in the brand was a black version of the star Matilda adopted for her practice: interlocking diamonds. This was the form that only fairies use, not that she knew that at the time. They figured it was all black as she presented as a Shadow Fairy. It was more difficult to define why, exactly, it was there. Sure, it was the symbol of her Hogwarts House, but that couldn't be the reason. It was possible that it was there because it symbolized rebirth and healing: the reason why Matilda was there and part of the reason Umehito made his oath. In the end, they decided it was there to symbolizes her magic. Her eyes turned silver when she used magic unrelated to her creature inheritance after all. And snakes were one of the main forms her shadows took. After all, she did always have a snake or two hiding in her own shadow, ready to defend or attack when needed. Once they got that all squared away, they discovered the next change. The bond had boosted their power as well as allowing them to exchange energy as needed. Of course, she was displeased to discover that Ume had the shit end of the bond. He could only take so much, one it started to negatively affect her, it stopped. On the other hand, she could take as much as she wanted or needed until he was rendered unconscious. She could only hope it never came to that. The last change, as far as the could tell so far, was the creation of a telepathic bond between them. They only explored it a little before bed, but they could tell that it allowed them to sense the general wellbeing of each other at all times as well as get a sense of where the other was. They could send thoughts to one another, but that seemed to be all. Or at least they wouldn't be hearing each other's thoughts 24/7. Despite the unexpectedness of it all, she was glad for the changes. At least now Ume would be more likely to spend time with his friends and family without her, since he would know she was okay. Plus, it enabled her to know Ume was currently at school, so she didn't panic over not being able to sense him in the house. Only one real question remained: what to do while he's away? 'Well, first things first. Get dressed and get food.' She thought, finally getting out of bed. After using the restroom and going to her closet, Matilda couldn't help but wonder why Mika hadn't come. Perhaps she only helps when she has an important event. Although, it was more likely that a maid would only help her when she had somewhere to go. After all, she didn't think she had to do anything but decorate her house for the next week. Shrugging the situation off, she just put on comfortable, black dress pants and a long-sleeved red blouse. Walking toward the kitchen, ready to get her own breakfast, a maid intercepts her, telling her to wait in the dining room and she would bring her something. 'Really', she thought, 'I can't make my own breakfast? I better be able to in my own house.' Not long after she sat down, the maid brought her a rice omelet and fruit with chocolate milk. While eating, she contemplated what to do that day. She could look online for some furniture or clothes. Maybe write a letter to her Nana since it was a bit late to call her. She could even study a little, to try and catch up on Japanese History. She still hadn't made a decision as she walked back towards her room. But before she reached it, Umehito's mother, Kira, intercepted her. "Ah, Matilda-kun, just who I was looking for. I was hoping we could talk?" She stated more than asked. Matilda nodded, realizing that she didn't really have a choice in the matter. And what was one more awkward conversation/interrogation? Kira led her to her study, having her sit on the other side of her desk. 'Can't blame her for going for intimidation.' Matilda thought, waiting for Kira to tell her why she was there. With a straight face, "What are your intentions with my son?" Matilda frowned, wondering what she meant, surely not marriage? "He's my best friend. I just want him safe and happy, which is the only reason I agreed to his oath." She was clearly skeptical, "So you put him in danger because he wanted it? You almost got him expelled from the Clan." Trying to be respectful, she disagreed. "His Uncle tried to get him expelled, I did what I could to prevent that. I don't want him putting him in danger for me, but he has chosen to do so. So, I will do whatever I can to prevent that. And if I can't, I'll do what I can to make things better." Kira frowned, annoyed that she was right and so clearly willing to protect her son. Still… "What would happen if you couldn't defend yourself? If you were facing a human, were without magic, or facing a gun?" Matilda frowned, unhappy with the idea, but understanding it could happen. "I want to believe I'd find a way, but…" She leaned forward, leaning her arms against her desk, "Exactly," she stated, glad this girl understood her own weakness. Hopefully she would be willing to do whatever it took to keep her son safe. "In our community, we are bound by confidentiality, meaning that we are encouraged not to leave evidence for humans. For most, this means not performing any magic or supernatural feats on or around humans. However, as long as the humans cannot tell others what happened, most don't care what happens. Do you know how to prevent them from telling?" Matilda shrugged, "For as long as I can remember, I've been able to get others to overlook me. I can be in a room and no one will notice what I'm doing. It would be easy to get any human onlookers to ignore a situation. But while I can, I try not to manipulate others. Sure, in a life or death situation I have no problem using anything at my disposal. Otherwise…I find it distasteful to use magic against those that don't even know it exists, let alone defend against it." Nodding, "That's understandable and noble. But what could you do if in a place where magic does not work? There are a few in this country that occur naturally, and many can set up wards in which only they can use it. How would you defend yourself then?" "Against an ordinary human? I did learn a few self-defense techniques that would work. But there are a lot more people here, human or otherwise, that practice martial arts. I can't really imagine them working then." "After you meet them, you could request that the Haninozuka and Morinozuka families train you, they are our allies. But there is no guarantee they would accept. So, as you are now a part of our Clan, I would like to teach you how to use a weapon, particularly throwing knives. "With your gifts and nature, you should be able to hide them on your person or make them from magic. If you do particularly well, we can attempt to train you to use other knives or longer blades." Matilda thought it over. It did make sense, she could probably make knives or something similar out of her shadows, or even pure energy. And she was the best pitcher her team had when playing softball. "I understand." Kira smiled, happy she was cooperating, "Good. The other thing we need to address is your fear of guns. While they are heavily regulated here and there are often fewer than a dozen gun related deaths in the country in a given year, they do still exist here. In fact, the Ootori's personal police force use them and you'll be going to school with their youngest son. Not to mention, we don't know how long you'll be staying in the country. Your much more likely to face a firearm when you return home. At the very least, you need to get over your fear of them." Seeing she agreed, she continued, "The best tactic would be exposure therapy. We'll start by having you read up on guns. You'll learn how they are made, assembled, and maintained. Once you finish that, we'll have you use a paintball or bb gun. If you manage that, we'll move on to real guns. "Once you are 18, you'll take the safety course and apply for a hunting license. If you can fire a real gun in a practice range, I'll be happy. Of course, you free to actually use the hunting license if you receive it." Matilda wasn't exactly pleased by this. Despite being related to a number of police officers and her own mother having a gun license, she never wanted to use one. She had no desire to, even for hunting. But Kira was right, she was terrified of them. The last thing she needs is to freeze up if she's faced with one. And, to be fair, her mother went through the same thing. She only had her gun license because she felt like she needed to get over her own fear. With that in mind, she agreed. Kira gave her a few books from her office, prompting Matilda to remember that she owned a gun manufacturing company in Russia. Well, at least it made sense for why she was so concerned. They also worked on a schedule, Umehito would be teaching her the basics when he came home from school. They would work on her skills a few times a week, with Kira occasionally checking up on her. ~~~~~ July 28th, 2004 It was dark. Shadows surrounded him, preventing him from seeing anything, even with his advanced sight. His training should allow him to sense if anyone or thing was nearby, but he sensed nothing but the shadows themselves. He wondered why that didn't unnerve him? Maybe it was the fact that the shadows seemed fond of him? They embraced him, trying to give him comfort. Before he could explore the darkness further, he felt a presence, but it wasn't in the shadows. 'Oh. I must be dreaming.' Just as he thought that he woke up to find his cousin standing by his bed. Looking at his face, he wondered if he dreamt the same thing. "Takashi?" The blond called before sitting on his bed. "You dreamt that too?" He sat up, nodding as he did so, unsurprised that Mitsukuni knew what he was thinking. "What do you think it meant?" He asked. Takashi thought it over, trying to remember if he'd had similar dreams before. He couldn't remember any with shadows, but he did remember floating in a dream. "Important people." The younger frowned, confused. After a moment, realization stuck, "You think they're pointing towards someone important? I know we dreamt of each other, I wonder what they would mean to us if we're both dreaming about them?" He shrugged. They were close enough that anyone important to one of them would be important to the other. But only time would tell.   September 24th, 2004 Shadows again. He wasn't surprised to see them, he dreamed of them often enough the past two months. They were comforting, and he felt more well rested after dreaming about them. But this time seemed different. He still couldn't see anything in the darkness, but he thought he could sense a presence. He took a deep breathe, trying to catch a scent. Unfortunately, they were either too far away or not physically here enough for him to smell anything from them. He did hear them breathing though, so he wasn't imagining something that wasn't there. Before he could investigate further, he woke up. Frustrated, he decided to ask Takashi if he had learned anything else from his dream.   November 14th, 2004 Weeks had past and neither he nor his cousin had been able to learn anything else about the person in their dreams. Every time he or Mitsukuni had tried to get closer to them, they woke up. Well, until tonight. The person seemed closer than usual, as if they sat next to him. Assuming that he would wake up if he tried to touch them, he sat still letting the dream play out. Listening closely, he heard quiet rustling over his and their breathing. Was that feathers? Did the person have wings? Just as he thought that, he felt something soft against his back and arms. Whoever this was, they probably would end up close if they were hugging him with their wing.   December 3rd, 2004 Takashi was enjoying the dream, content to just let things flow after months of failing to learn more than the dreams wanted. That seemed to be the best decision he thought as the dream changed once again. The wing was still draped over his back when he felt a hand on him arm. The first thing he noticed about it was that it was small. The second thing he noticed were the scars. A little less than half of the palm had been burnt at one point. He was concerned for this person, hoping they were okay now. Wanting to offer comfort, even though they weren't actually there, he put his own hand over theirs and was surprised when he was actually able to without waking. Noticing the back of the hand was scared as well, he frowned. He also managed to feel the nails as well; they were long and felt polished, causing him to wonder if this person was a girl. Just then, he woke up with the thought of finding his cousin. They needed to talk about this.   December 7th, 2004 The cousins sat together enjoying breakfast after morning practice, both thinking over the changes in their dreams. "Do you think we're going to meet them soon?" Mitsukuni asked, "That was the second change in a week." Takashi shrugged. It was possible. And likely if one thought about it, after all, they were supposed to meet the newest member of the Nekozawa Clan after school that day, there was a chance they were the same person. He was more concerned over the change from the dream. She, or at least he thought it was she, had turned and showed him her eyes. But he couldn't for the life of him figure out what color they were. His cousin shrugged back, "I looked up eye colors before practice. Apparently, there are gray eyes that can look blue or green. Most of the time they're called blue. None of the shades matched, but she is a creature, probably a fairy, so that might affect the colors." That made sense, even if there was no real proof. Creatures usually didn't advertise their differences online when anyone could stumble on it. All they could do was wait and see. Not that they had to wait long. Chapter End Notes I originally had the last part as an outtake, but decided to rewrite it. After I did I figured it could fit in perfectly as a bit of a preview to the next chapter ***** Unexpected Meetings ***** Chapter Summary Matilda gets a surprise visit. Chapter Notes I know Umehito is in 3-B not 3-A but fanfiction has no rules sooo, he's now in the A classes. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 Umehito was trying not to panic. He was on his way home, but not alone. Honey- san and Mori-san were with him, which wasn't a problem itself. The problem was his father neglected to tell him that they'd be coming with him. He could have dealt with that, but if he didn't know than there was little chance that Maeve- sama knew either. Worse, he couldn't even warn her as she wasn't reading his texts or giving any indication to have received he telepathic messages. The only thing keeping him from losing it, was that he could sense her at his house. He could only guess that she'd fallen asleep, since she should have responded one way or another if she was awake. He could only hope that she wouldn't react poorly to their guests. Later on, she would question why he didn't just have one of the maids warn her when she didn't answer him. ~~~ The three males walked into Umehito's sitting room, only to see Matilda stirring in one of the armchairs in front of the fire. She looked that them, a little confused. Turning to her best friend, she silently asked what was going on. He was nervous, which bothered her, especially with two dangerous teens next to him. And why did her instincts say she could trust them? Umehito walked over to her, picked up the book she dropped on the floor, and turned to introduce their guests. "Maeve-sama, these are my friends and classmates Haninozuka Mitsukuni and Morinozuka Takashi. Our fathers thought you should meet now that you're a part of my Clan. Their fathers and brothers will be joining us for dinner. Honey- san, Mori-san, I'd like for you to meet Montgomery Matilda." The blond quickly added, "It's great to meet you! You can call us Honey and Mori, most do." So these were the two Ume had told her so much about. It's nice to put faces to names. He only described them a little, and that was years ago. She looked them over, wondering if she'd be able to call them friends or just allies. The first thing she noticed, was that both kept looking between her eyes and the scars on her hand. That didn't make much sense, considering the dress she was wearing, while proper, revealed all the ones on her arms and below her knees. Why would they just look at her hand? The second thing she noticed was how different their appearances were. Honey was over a foot and a half shorter than his cousin. Add the cute appearance and the pink bunny plush and you could easily mistake him for someone in Elementary school. Mori, on the other hand, was intimidating. He was tall and strong, and looked like he would beat you to a pulp if you got on his bad side. However, neither of these appearances matched up with the stories Umehito has told her over the years. Between that and her instincts urging to trust people so dangerous, she decided to focus on her second sight to see the real them. Huh, Elves. One Sky and one Earth, at least their personalities matched their subspecies. The two were more alike than she would have guessed if she didn't know better. They were both highly trained and could cause a lot of damage. But that didn't mean that they would; they had strong morals. They didn't want to harm people… well, Honey did a little, but that part of himself seemed under control. She already respected them, but this cemented it. Between Ume's faith in them and her instincts, she was willing to trust them. But seeing that Honey, the more dangerous of the two, tried so hard not to scare others, she couldn't help but start to care for them too. She was willing to actually call them friends, when she noticed an irregularity in the bond between them. There were three strands of purple. Their bond was complicated with strands denoting them as cousins, neighbors, classmates… But she would think there would only be the light purple of friendship, not two others telling of a deeper and more taboo relationship. She really didn't care that it existed: they were both consenting to it and couldn't have children together, which were her only concerns. Still, what should she do about it? They were now her allies, at the very least she should advise them to hide it better. But would that make them feel threatened? Maybe it would be best to do something to hide it herself without them knowing. That way she had insurance, and if they ever decide to tell her, she can make something more permanent that they can control. She sighed, wondering what she was about to get herself into with these guys. Standing and giving the appropriate bow, "Most call me Matilda, but friends call me Maeve. Feel free to use either." After all, she felt they could be friends and she had so few. She gestured for them all to sit down, retaking her own seat. Of course, that would be when Mika brought up snacks. "Cake!" Honey exclaimed, reminding her that Ume had mentioned his cake addiction. He's lucky she was in a baking mood this morning. Mika set down a plate of fruit and 4 pieces of cake on the coffee table. After serving Umehito and their guests tea, she brought Matilda her glass filled with some type of juice. Once they were all served, she bowed and left. Honey grabbed his piece as soon as was polite and dug in, only to barely repress a moan. "This is great! Where did you get it?" Matilda smiled over her own slice, "I find it very difficult to find cakes or other baked goods that have fruit that isn't baked in. I prefer fruit fresh, not all squishy. After some trial and error, I figured out strawberries went great with my favorite cake. I made this earlier." Honey snapped his head up towards her, "You made this?" This cake was great: vanilla cake, chocolate frosting, and strawberries on top and between layers. Matilda nodded as she grabbed her glass and pushed a bit of her magic in it, causing it to turn from pale gold to a light teal color. "Yeah, I like to bake. Usually muffins and brownies, but I make a cake every month or so." Mori watched her alter her drink, wondering what it was and why she was drinking it instead of tea. Honey was wondering that too but was more concerned with getting her to bake for him. Seeing them look at her drink, but knowing they were probably too polite to ask, "I was injured this summer. This is a special medicated drink for Fairies that makes sure I heal correctly and don't have any setbacks until I'm in top shape again." Thankfully it tasted good, since she had to drink it twice a day. Physically she was healed, but her scars were still points of weakness and her psychic body was still a little injured. Barring any setbacks, she should be able to switch to a normal nutritional supplement in January.  ~~~ After being encouraged to do so by Matilda, the boys spent the next hour and a half doing homework while making small talk. Matilda was able to weave magic like a mist on Honey and Mori, hoping she wasn't noticed. She made sure that no one could make out certain strands of their bond, as if they weren't there and that the only people that knew about it was her and the people they trusted to know. If she did it correctly, and she believed she did, anyone they didn't trust with the info would forget it. Well, as long as Honey and Mori held her trust. Honey and Mori went down stairs, as their fathers and brothers had arrived. Matilda remembers being told about the Haninozuka family rule: they have to fight each other whenever they meet. Logically, the Nekozawas know this and have a place for them to fight before the meeting. Or that's what Matilda assumed as she put on a pair of suede heels before following Umehito to the Dining Room. On the way there we bumped into Kirimi. She was a little sweetheart, even though she was afraid of her brother. To prevent a scene, Matilda motioned for him to go on ahead, before crouching down onto Kirimi's level. "Are you coming to dinner?" She asked the blonde toddler. "Yeah!" She said with a big smile on her face. "Can I pick you up and carry you?" Matilda asked, knowing that even at her age she had a right to say no. She nodded and lifted up her arms. Matilda scooped her up, putting her on her hip before continuing on her way. When they reached their destination, a maid took Kirimi from her, apparently her and Kira would be having dinner in another room. She would have to work on Kirimi, gain her trust enough that she would believe her when she pointed out her brother. It was a pity that she was so afraid of the dark that they could interact. No one was sitting yet, probably trying to be gentlemen, but they stood behind their chairs. Umehito introduced her, pointing everyone out as he did. She knew his father Kazuo, across from him were Haninozuka Yorihisa and Morinozuka Akira, Honey and Mori's fathers. To their left sat their youngest sons Haninozuka Yasuchika and Morinozuka Satoshi. Across from them were Honey and Mori. Ume pulled out her chair between Mori and his father before taking his seat across from her, next to Satoshi. Before dinner was even served, "What's with the scars?" followed by a thunk. Satoshi had hit Yasuchika upside the head with one of those wooden kendo swords for is rude question. Both of their fathers sent them disapproving looks. Matilda laughed, surprised that someone was bold enough to ask. "It's all right, really. While not exactly a conversation for dinner, the scars are the direct result of ignoring my instincts. A mistake I'm sure not to make again." After looking around ad seeing all wanted to know more, despite the food now in front of them, she continued with a sigh. "A child should be able to trust their parents to protect them. I made the mistake of hoping that was true, despite my instincts telling me otherwise. "My biological father had legal physical custody of me, even though I only saw him on alternating weekends by that point. I didn't particularly want to, but I didn't have and real reason not to go see him. A few hours later I went to make something to eat. Turned on the stove and next thing I know my hand is being put into the flame. I spent the next two days being used as a knife sharpener. "But after not hearing from me or even having his messages read, Umehito contacted my mother, worried. But she was just as worried. I usually texted her multiple times a day during my stays there, but she hadn't received one or been notified that I'd read hers. My phone was locked and he didn't know the code. I certainly wasn't going to give it to him. "Thankfully, she had the sense to bring a police officer with her to pick me up. But when they knocked on the door, he shot me." Honey was deathly pale and barely holding on to his anger, "How did you survive?" Matilda shrugged, finishing off the first course. "Technically I didn't. My heart stopped twice before I even reached the hospital. But I'm rather spiteful and didn't want to give him the satisfaction of killing me. Between that and my inheritance, I lived and soon was able to send him to jail. Unfortunately, between healing and court, I was unable to return to school in the fall." "And yet you left your family after such a grim time." Yorihisa stated, despite the strength she showed, it was cruel to do that. Matilda frowned, looking towards him. "It was a difficult choice, but one that had to be made. My great-grandmother is the only member of my family that is away of the supernatural. I would have loved to stay with them, but I wasn't going to tear them away from all they knew. My brother just entered the ninth grade, I wasn't going to force him away from his friends. And they needed time away from me just as much as I needed to be away from them. "There is only so much you should hide from family and so much I must hide from mine. My mother is already hurt from this, I don't need to make it worse by telling her that, even though her face doesn't show it, I can see her hating herself more every time she looks at me. Or that my brother is full of fear just by being in the same room. Telling them is far to cruel. "No. Its kinder for me to be on the other side of the globe than to force us all to be together and slowly decay." Taking a sip from her glass, she continued. "Besides, can you fault a child for going off on their own? While custody would usually have reverted to my mother, there was little reason. I am now the Matriarch of my family as far as the Supernatural World is concerned. I'll be an adult among my people in a few weeks. Add my desire to leave the country and the courts were only too glad to grant me emancipation. "And it's not as if I abandoned them. They have everything they could need and nearly everything they could want. I take care of my own." Kazuo cleared his throat, drawing everyone’s attention. This was a decent time to ask, and it would only help to defuse the tension, "Speaking of family, with you know part of our Clan and tied so closely to our son, my wife and I would like to make you an offer." Seeing he had her attention, "We'd like to adopt you." End Notes Feel free to comment with suggestions or constructive criticism.
