Beware the tags. ***** Chapter 1 ***** Jack awakens to the sound of the front door slamming shut. "What?! What... what was that?" He looks out the window by his bed. "...Dad?" He blinks his brown eyes, shaking his head a little. His father is trudging through the snow and ice, away from their little cabin. The white-haired boy throws his blankets over and gets up, pulling his long hair into a ponytail atop his head, rushing for the door and opening it. "Dad!" He rushes down the stairs, gripping the railing as to not fall. When he finally reaches the bottom, he sees his mother, head in her hands, sobbing, a drink next to her. Yanking open the outside door, he's met by freezing temperatures and howling winds. He screams, "Dad!  Dad!" Running for the pale figurine in the distance. Finally catching up to it, he grips his father's arm, pulling him back. "Don't leave us, please! I-- I'm sorry about what I did to Emma!" Tears fall down his face as he realizes: his father is about to leave the district. "Let go, Jackson! Let me go, this instant!" "No! You'll die out there!" "Well at least I won't have you to let me drown," his father seethes, slamming his son against the pale, white snow that covers the ground. "You..." he pets Jack's face, oh so tenderly. "I cannot bear to be hurt by you any longer." His father gave him a look before standing up. "Go home, Jackson." Watching as his father disappears under the gates and over the hill, he holds himself tight under a tree. The Capitol changed Jack. They took him during the middle of the night, only a few hours after his sister had died. They experimented on him, turned him into something he's not. Putting his hair into a bun, he cannot stand to look at it any longer. He simply stares at his stomach. He was told that he now qualifies as a woman. He doesn't know how that works, but... Somehow, someway, he was released from the retched place of his surgeries, after two years, he was returned to his home. It has been one year since that time. He was told before he left words that he will never forget: This child will be the greatest courtesans of all, not only is the young one gorgeous, hand-picked by President Kozmotis, but also now able to bear children. This child is most certainly blessed by the Capitol. Essentially, the only things about himself that haven't changed are his height, age, and milk chocolate eyes. And so he cries softly, ignoring his hair freezing in the cold. That was until he hears hard footsteps on the ground and looks up when he hears a voice. The voice is hard, snapping easily to a halt on most syllables, yet also flows together into what seems like one word. "Ay, Jackie. I saw you and your dad. He's lucky I didn't come at him. I had to hold myself back from throwing HIM in a river." Jack wipes his nose. "I'm sorry..." The man sits down and pulls Jack close. "Don't say that." He looks to the sky, and they just stare at the light coming over the mountains. "Do you know why I stay in this district?" Giving him a weird look, Jack slowly begins, "...because... we can't change districts? We can't leave here?" "No, you know that I have a trick up my sleeve to leave," he winks, "The real reason is that, if I stay here, I... I can be with you. Forever." "Aster," Jack sighs, shaking his head. "You know, that... that I'm betrothed. To the President." Said man shifts on the ground. "Yeah, more like one of his concubines." "Aster!" Jack chastises. "What?!" Aster yells, loudly. Birds are startled and trees shake as the winged creatures take off. "He had them do that to you!" He points at the boy's hair. "Without your consent. He essentially turned you into a woman! How many children can you bear? Huh? Have they told you? Have they told you if the so- called Great Leader wants many? No? Will he have you on your hands and knees, or sitting like a good little thing at his feet? Hm?" "...He'll take care of me." "I know that, but you haven't even met the guy. If we leave, we can move underground. Or in District Thirteen! Or--" Smiling sadly, Jack cuts Aster off, "I love you, you know. But..." The conversation is paused for what feels like eternity. "But not the way I love you," Aster says sadly. Jack shakes his head and waits for the bell. After all, it's Reaping Day. --- Tiana, or Tooth, as the young boys and girls like to call her, stands on the stage of their common grounds, hands clasped tightly on the sheet of paper she holds. "Jaqueline... O-Overland," the petite woman said, surprise filling her bird- like voice. She tilted her head up, her colorful hair bouncing. "Where is... Miss Overland?" She asks tentatively, her voice cracking at the end. It seems that she's noticed too, and makes eye contact with the boy. Jack's eyes widen as everyone turns to him. What? What do they mean I've been chosen? My name isn't supposed to be in there. What does she mean, calling my name like that? Jack's vision blurs and he feels like he's about to faint when a girl behind him shoves him, hard. He looks black, a blonde girl named Astrid talking loudly to the girl next to her. "It's about time you share our people's customs." They both giggle and Heather continues, "You weren't getting out of another Reaping because hubby--" they mean Koz, Jack realizes, "--didn't want you in such a horrible place." She gushes at him, her lips pursed, eyelids batting, hands clasped together. The girls laugh loudly and high five. He takes note of a Peacemaker starting for them, but he halts and says something about choosing another name. No doubt asking President Kozmotis. My love, Jack hears in his mind. Koz...? He starts, suddenly frightened, and looks around. My love, you have been chosen as District 7's female tribute. I will not bend these rules, not even for you. However, I will be sure that no harm comes to you, my love. Jack suddenly feels two large arms wrapped around him. He's about ready to scream, he doesn't want to be taken away. He's royalty. Or he will be. Or... "Jackie, look at me. Breathe. Look at me, Jackie. Just look at me," Aster is holding him, tears falling from his own eyes. Over the speakers, his betrothed, President Kozmotis sounds, "...For making my bride to be a fool, the two girls who did such will be punished." At that word, four nearby Peacemakers point their guns at the girls. Everyone screams, this way and that. But two of the officers pull the triggers, sending the girls to the afterlife for what they had done.  The people are all still running and shouting, and suddenly, a Peacemaker is by their side. "Take him inside!" The man yells, "I'll be right behind you! Go, go!" Shots are fired by civilians, officers gutted by knives, and fists begin to fly everywhere. At first, they were feom those who loved the two girls. Now, it's save your own skin. Aster yanks Jack by the arm, running fast for the City Hall building. While they're running, the Peacemaker shoots off a few rounds, keeping people out of their little circle. Tripping over the stairs, Jack sees stars as he falls on his hands and knees from a sudden bullet flying by his ear. He screeches as the Peacemaker hops in front of the two. Jack sees nothing but red as the blood of the shot officer splatters on his face. He breathes shakily, gulping down air, when he's picked up bridal style by Aster, who bounces off of his heel, throwing them through the double doors. He jumps back and races for the doors, slamming the makeshift shields shut with the echo of one thousand thunders. ***** Chapter 2 ***** Chapter Notes sorry for changing his name a little but I just had to xD ALSO SORRY FOR BEING SO LATE WITH UPDATING!! I've left you guys a surprising twist and 1) I hope it flows well, if that makes sense and 2) I had to work it so that it tied in with the first chapter. Let me know if anything doesn't!!! He sits awkwardly in the room, watching the door Aster had just come through. "A-Are you sure?" He asks. The tall man nods. "Yeah, the male tribute is definitely Henry Haddock. Jackie, that guy won't hesitate to drive a bullet through your skull." Working his hands around each other, he stares at the ground. "What are you saying, Aster? He's one of my best friends... he would never do that to me." "Are you shitting me?! Jackie, once you went missing, he gave up on you! When you came back, he didn't stay by your side, not like I did!" Jackie opens his mouth to retort, but nothing comes out. Aster continues, "He just would stare at you with a leveled mixture of disappointment and anger that he always does, as he pulls the knife from his pocket and gouged your throat!" "Stop it, Aster!" Jackie yells at him. "Hiccup is not that kind of man!" "Come on! Jackie, get it through your damn head! He's bad news!" Standing up, he slams his hands down on the table. "Send my mother in. I can't deal with you right now." *** It's good that he asked Aster to send his mother in at that time because, only a few moments later, an announcement went through the building saying: TEN MINUTES UNTIL DEPARTURE TO CAPITOL. After saying goodbye to his mother, he turned to Aster. "Take care of her. By any means necessary." Aster nods. "I will." "Thank you." Then, he is guided onto the train and shown to his cart that contains a bed, night desk, closet, and restroom.  He decides to take a shower and clear his head. Turning on the water, he can't help but smile when he realizes that he can get hot water on this train. He spins the heat on and gets in, washing himself. "This is one of the last showers you'll ever get, Jackie, enjoy it..." he mumbled. But he couldn't enjoy it. And all for one reason: Henry Haddock.  His best friend-- other than for Aster, that is.  The three of them were always together when they were younger, running around the village and tipping over water barrels. Running from Heather and the other teenagers they'd catch snogging each other. Hiccup-- that's Henry, Jackie just likes to call him that-- and Jack were the same age, and Aster was about 4 years ahead of them, buf that didn't stop their shenanigans. One time, they had all run into a nearby factory because their "home base" was set there, and they'd go there to play a lot. But one day Hiccup had gotten hurt, so his father organized a party to go to the building and lock it up. Jackie chuckled at that. He remembered how upset their parents were.  Aster's mother, Bonnie, had grounded Aster for two whole weeks. Reaching for the knob, Jackie shuts the water off and stands up, grabbing a nearby towel. When he steps out, he sees Hiccu-Henry, he sees Henry, sitting on his bed, watching him intently, his eyes lidded.  With a screech, Jackie holds his towl closer to his body. "Shit Henry!! You nearly scared the shit out of me!" He lets out a breath. "What's going on?" He blushes. "I'm just here to..." he rolls his shoulder back. "...talk." He pats the side of the bed, and Jackie gladly takes it, a blush still coating his cheeks heavily. "S-So..." "Your boyfriend murdered my girlfriend," he states simply, not holding back. "Did you know I was going to propose to her today? After we didn't get chosen?" Mouth dropping open, Jackie scoffs, "Hic- Henry, you do know that she put my name in that bowl, right?" "Hell, Jack!" Hiccup suddenly yells, but he seems more upset with himself than anything else. "I was the one who fucking suggested it!" The silence stood in the room like a giant, threatening to send him into a panic. "Wh...what?" Tears well up as he tries to process the man's outburst. Eyes widening at the boy's reaction, he shook his head and confesses, "...I'm sorry. I was joking, and, I guess they thought I wasn't, so...I was as shocked as you were, if not more. I... I'm sorry," he almost weeps, his hands holding his head. Tears stream down Jackie's eyes as well. "I..." he shakes his head. "Hiccup, I'm going to tell you something that no one must ever know, maybe it will ease some of your guilt." Breathing in, Hiccup looks at him expectantly. "Okay...?"   "I wasn't planning on doing this," he said, getting up. "I wanted to keep playing the naive and innocent person that everyone thinks I am, but I can't deceive you. Even after everything we've been through, I just can't." Slowly, he moves back to the shower, picking up a necklace. He holds it up so Hiccup can see it. "It's a... It's a shepherd's hook?" "Yes," he states simply, "This necklace appeared to me the night that you, me, and Aster all were watching the moon together." He can feel the wind currents dance and play around him, and he sees the camras turn off. Hiccup seems surprised. "Wh-- Jack! Jackie?!" He clambers up and over to where they were standing. "Where'd you go?!" He smiles sadly. He knows Hiccup probably won't understand, but he's going to try anyway. The necklace flashes blue, and suddenly it's a normal size, the chain hanging from his hand, wrapped around the cool wood. Looking down at himself, he sees a dark blue dress with a white coat wrapped around his torso, his long hair reaching down his back and cutting off at where his elbows happen to  correlate with his stomach. His legs decorated with a brown fabric wrapped around his ankles and up to his shins.  "Hiccup, my true name is Jack Frost."  Said man's head jerks in his direction. "Jackie...?" He asks, looking the boy up and down.  "You see me, yes?" With a nod, Hiccup's jaw drops. Jack smiles. "I am going to tell you a story, okay? You must believe me." He nods once more. Jack smiles at that and begins the story. "Once upon a time, there were five spirits who protected children all over the world from evil. They were called the Guardians. There was Nikolas St North, or, more commonly known as Santa. E Aster Bunnymund was the Easter Bunny. The Tooth Fairy, Tiana, and The Sandman, Sandy. I, myself, am also a Guardian. My name in this form is Jack Frost. The Guardians had defeated their enemy, The Nightmare King, hundreds upon hundreds of times, throwing him back into the darkness that he manipulates." "Okay?" Hiccup's eyes narrow, watching the boy as if he'd lost his mind. "Until, one day, The Nightmare King had won by means unbeknowest of the Guardians, and thrown them into a dream vortex, one by which the evil king could manipulate into his own dreams and pleasures. And so, this world was created. The history books were written in stone, and the Guardians were dissipated, their memories completely wiped, as they were made into children themselves. Thus, we are all forced to do his bidding." "Uh-huh...?" "I only know of this because I saw it while Pi-- Koz, I mean," he shudders at the name anyway, "while they were busy doing...this," he gestured to his stomach, "I saw it all. I saw it all, Hiccup! My... future... betrothed," Jack forces out, "is playing us for fools. He believes that his dream has finally come true." Dropping the weapon, he feels himself revert back to Jaqueline Overland, and he catches the necklace-- that was just the weapon, but had shrunken-- in his two hands. "I need you to help me prove that it has not."
