Words: 4517 ****** A Flickering Light ****** by Unoutan Summary His voice is all that remains for Midoriya Izuku’s friends, his family, and…Bakugou Katsuki. Deku's voice is a wave of emotion, washing against the shore of Katsuki's mind, eroding and replenishing sand in an endless loop. Katsuki could stop this, but no. No. Prompt: Stargazing Notes See the end of the work for notes It has become a habit for him to look at a star every night, focus on one just for a few moments when his days are busy…and for hours on other days. Bakugou Katsuki has come to make this his routine. His fellow classmates have noticed, noticed this habit a while ago, but chose not to mention it. Katsuki would call them all stupid for tip-toing around him, but hell, he doesn’t really care for their cautiousness. They all know what happened. They’re all doing their own to deal with everything that has happened, so it’s nothing abnormal. Even Aizawa is still a little weird about it. Shinsou is weird about it. Todoroki especially…since he was the last one to- Katsuki sighed. His room is a little dark with only one light at the side of his bed illuminating everything and the long curtains of the veranda door drawn closed. The dormitories of 1-A are quiet today, a Sunday night with school tomorrow, and the days at school are concluding. It’s the last year. Katsuki and those who made it are graduating this year from UA High. The only person who won’t be joining them is Midoriya Izuku. Midoriya Inko was dragged into protective custody immediately and her tears don’t seem to stop; her tears are painful to see to Katsuki. It happened two months away from the end of their first year at UA High: Shigaraki Tomura kidnapped Midoriya Izuku during the aftermath of the strenuous hero agency internships, the last internship contracts for the year. He was taken so simply and Shigaraki Tomura’s teasing taunts on public television, forcibly broadcasted everywhere in Japan is still haunting to this day. Deku’s angered form, glowing brightly with light and power, shook the camera as they fought with dust and debris flying. Powerless, Iida screamed when Deku was thrown back to slide over a bar counter and crash against an assortment of wine and liquors. The shocked crowds on the streets screamed when the man known as Dabi burnt Deku’s right arm. Hands wrapped around Deku’s throat and the camera recording the scene shattered to pieces, cutting off, before they saw what happened. Toshinori Yagi was next to Katsuki at the time and when he slowly looked at the man he’s respected since he was a child, Katsuki gulped. Toshinori’s tears and screams were hard to hear, hard to watch as he stood by his side. Uraraka hid her face on Iida’s chest as he held her close. Shoji punched a wall so suddenly that everyone looked at him quick and Tokoyami had to calm him as he began to shake. Katsuki became silent...ignoring Kirishima shaking his shoulders, screaming something in his face. Katsuki felt everything fall around him. At that time, Deku and Todoroki Shouto were interning together with the number one hero by default Endeavor. Deku was last seen sitting on a street curb by himself, surrounded by police officers too. On the grainy film of a nearby security camera, Deku let out one long, tired sigh before the ground around him turned black, consuming him down into darkness. He was swept away from under the police’s feet, in the middle of a concluding crime scene, a few paces away from Endeavor, before the eyes of an approaching Todoroki Shouto, but Deku was still effortlessly taken. Kurogiri was efficient and swift like the first time everyone met the bastard during the USJ incident. Katsuki yelled at Todoroki for letting his guard down, at Endeavor for doing the same and at Deku for the same reasons, despite Deku being unable to hear him. Despite it not being the nerd's fault...or even Todoroki's fault; his anger felt directionless, which frustrated him more. It was then, at the entrance of UA high just outside the UA Barrier, a small unmarked packaged was placed in the center of the main walkway. That was the last time Katsuki, anyone else, has seen Deku…on public television, outnumbered and fighting fot his life...but it wasn’t the last they heard of him. Turning his head to the side to get more comfortable on his pillow and bed, Katsuki put on his headphones and surfed his phone. When he found what he wanted, Katsuki clicked play: “Shigara-“ Deku started to speak, but a polite knock at his door made Katsuki pause his mp3 playlist from playing. Uraraka happily called for him, “Bakugou-kun?” Pausing the mp3 audio recording, Katsuki turned around when he heard Uraraka open the door and say, “Hey there, Bakugou-kun. E-Everyone is in the kitchen area and eating. Want to join us?” “No. No thanks. I’ll eat later.” The door creaked open a little more and there stood the class representative, Iida Tenya with his familiar stern face. He made a mini-chop motion once with his left hand and spoke in a tone that sounded too soft than usual, “I’ll save you two servings before, Asui-san, Shoji-kun, Kaminari-kun, Sero-kun, and Kirishima-kun eat it all.” Normally, Katsuki wanted to throw something at them, but he’s resting right now, too comfy in his bed. Glaring at them, Katsuki muttered, “Yea. Thanks.” When Uraraka and Iida smiled at him, Katsuki let his head fall back to look at the blank ceiling of his dorm room with a tiny groan. But he gave Iida and Uraraka a half-wave as he crossed his ankles together, lying on his bed. Iida closed his door. Looking at his phone, Katsuki closed his eyes and once again started the recording. The over the ear headphones secluded Katsuki with the voice of the boy he’s pushed away, his once childhood friend...the damn nerd, Deku. His voice starts off quiet, but gradually turned to a normal volume as Deku spoke near Katsuki’s ear like he was lying in his bed at his side, “Shigaraki Tomura gave me an audio recording device. He said I have to talk to it everyday or…t-they will kill my mom.” Deku’s breathing is strained. He was probably fatigued…high on adrenaline. The first days, Deku’s voice is in an endless panic: “I can’t see my location. I’m in a room with no door, padded walls, reinforced walls like a Noumou…shock resistant and…soft, dark, like it’s actual flesh. The ground is the same w-with it’s shock resistance and regeneration, but sturdier to walk on, l-like it’s stretched out. The walls and ground sometimes twitch, so I think…it might actually be something…a-alive.” Hearing Deku like this, Katsuki can imagine his face…that determined expression, full of desperation. It’s the same face Katsuki saw when Deku called for him before he too was kidnapped a while back…and Deku angrily cried for him. That Deku expression. Katsuki closed his eyes tighter and listened to Deku talk again: “T-third day. There is only a floor flashlight in here and w-well…this recording device they gave me…they’re letting me message you these audio recordings.” The next audio recording only consisted of Deku breathing and whispered a little; an accidental recording, but he was talking about trying to escape. “I-It’s the fourth o-or fifth day?” Deku gulped a few times and then sighed, voice frustrated, “T-they’re probably sending this to you later as a taunt…blackmail. I-I shouldn’t use it, play along by talking, but-…t-talking helps me. K-Kacchan had to grow up hearing my mutterings all the time a-and you all know how I get with my notebook.” “I keep searching for how they come inside here to me, but the flesh walls regenerate over their tracks, over my kicks and punches. I don’t even know how I’m breathing in here…t-there…has to be a vent, an opening, somewhere. They can’t keep putting me to sleep over and over.” The anger within Deku’s voice calmed a little, only for a loud slam to follow after. The punch or kick Deku did sounded muffled and Deku sighed as he continued on to say, “But they do keep drugging me…forcing me to sleep. But I noticed something…before I black out, I saw pink smoke....t-they got to…Midnight-sensei, didn’t they?” They did. They did manage to get to Midnight. Shigaraki Tomura stole her quirk away. That happened a week after Izuku was taken. “I…wake up and there’s food. Water. A bucket for…um, anyway, they also gave me a small washcloth and a-also another bucket filled with water to let me bathe. They intend to keep me here for a long time.” Silence. Bakugou Katsuki bit his lip in anticipation. The silence between this line and the next is deafening. Eventually Deku’s voice returned, disheartened as he mumbled, “I…I’ve lost count of what day it is...” Todoroki was mailed this one audio recording of Deku a month later: There were no words, just a compilation of Deku screaming and crying. The messenger was almost frozen to death, but unfortunately, the person was only a simple mailman with no leads when he was interrogated for the whole day. Naomasa and Aizawa were upset, but the worst was who was going to update Toshinori Yagi about this new audio delivery of Midoriya Izuku’s agony. Endeavor and Todoroki Shouto got into a huge fight on that day, but Endeavor was left in silence by the end of their argument. It caused a huge scene, which Aizawa had to physically step in. It was a whole month again before they reached another lead. The lead was a new audio recording mailed to his home within an unmarked envelop the said, ‘Kacchan’ at the top. Katsuki’s mother was the one who discovered it at the doorstep of the Bakugou home. “The more I wake up and sleep, I feel weaker. B-but the ground is soft like…sleeping against a dog’s back on the floor, feeling its breath moving in and out. It’s oddly comforting. L-Like…. w-well, the walls breathing remind me…o-o-of…w-when Kacchan and I used to sleep over at each other’s houses. H- he…didn’t mind…mind me sleeping on him before…w-well before we-…erm yeah.” He didn’t. Deku used to sleep over at his home and vise versa. Since they were both tiny, they slept on the floor together in the same futon, even if they could have just slept on the bed. It didn’t feel like a sleep over if they weren’t sleeping on the floor, like when they all used to go camping outdoors. In the same recording, Deku talked about their past again. He talked about a past he missed, the past that Katsuki regretted: “Going camping with you and your parents, Kacchan, was so much fun. Bug hunting, hiking, playing in lakes and exploring…everything…together, was so erm…warm? We-…we were so warm before. Y-you only changed w-when...you know. Then I was just not e-enough for you anymore, Kacchan.” Slower and slower, did the audio mailing appear and in different ways. They finally caught footage of a misty hand reaching out from a tiny portal to place it on the doorstep of the Iida family residence. Deku’s voice sounded as if he were in the desert, voice dry and in pain as he spoke the words, “Dots and bandages…all over my arms. They’re taking my blood and injecting something in me…to keep me sedated. Toga Himiko is the only one I know who benefits from this. T-This is bad…very bad. So sluggish…but they keep feeding me and keeping me hydrated.” The sigh that followed after he finished talking about their possible plans, sounded too…tired, weak. A pause follows next until the sound of something metal openin...and then Shigaraki’s voice teased out a greeting to Deku, before it cut off. The next recording arrived at Tsuyu’s home, placed inside her parent's mailbox, delivered in the same way via Kurogiri’s warp quirk. Stationed at different places, Present Mic ran forward to try catching the hand that emerges, but he failed in his attempt. Deku’s voice was in a panic again, panting a lot and shivering like he was sick or cold, “H-How many more people do they have locked up like this? Like me? T-this system would provide them access to multiple blood sources. T-This is bad…so bad. Kacchan…Todoroki-kun, Iida-kun, Uraraka- san…k-keep an eye out, please. You can’t trust anyone.” “I-I know I should be worrying about myself, I’m the one alone here without anyone, b-but…I can’t help getting worried for everyone. My mom, All Might, Aizawa-sensei, Todoroki-kun…it’s not your fault Todoroki-kun. Uraraka-chan…I- Iida-kun…a-and Kacchan. Even if I know Kacchan can handle himself…he always has. I keep thinking about him the most.” “T-Todoroki-kun…t-talk to your f-father about possible traitors in his hero agency and...within the police force. Ask All Might about the police.” Bakugou frowned when he remembered Endeavor dragging out the moles within his agency and the Police force. Todoroki Shouto and Katsuki almost killed someone and had to be pulled away by Iida and Uraraka. “S-Shigaraki was talking through an intercom, b-but I heard some…f-familiar voices. It’s not your fault, Todoroki- kun. I-It’s not. A-And ask him about your brothers. I think…Dabi is-” It cuts off after that. The only sounds are rustling and sounds of Deku muttering a little, but it seemed to be directed at someone in the room with him. They couldn’t decipher Deku’s words, too low to understand as if he was covering his mouth. The next recording was mailed to the UA building, but the police intercepted it before it even made it to school grounds. The floating hand within the portal dropped the envelope on the ground, quickly disappearing and Aizawa’s bandages caught nothing. “I-I don’t know how many days I’ve been here, but I’ve been trying to keep count…3 months...I think.” At this time, it has been 4 and half months since Deku was taken captive. Deku began to cry as he said words Katsuki never thought he would say, “I don’t think you’re going to find me anymore. I’m feeling weaker and weaker a-and…” Deku's words here made him angry. Was he giving up? He was giving up and Katsuki wanted to punch his face for even thinking that they couldn’t find him. Katsuki whispered under his breath, glaring off in the distance, “Stupid…Deku.” The next recording was a fluke. Emailed to Uraraka’s private email and Deku didn’t make it far. Uraraka destroyed her room and he had to be the one to stop her from throwing everything into a hurricane whirlwind of floating chaos: “Shigaraki Tomura, all of them, are planning something big. The Shibuya Station, All the public transport in Tokyo and UA High’s barrier will-” Katsuki always finches at this part because the loud clatter that follows Izuku’s whimpering cries. The cloth of Katsuki’s bed clenched between his fists as he sat up quickly and walked over toward the sliding doors. He’s standing on the Veranda by himself and is a little happy that Kirishima isn’t in his room; no one is in their room, since they’re all eating. This might be self-torture, but Katsuki keeps listening like he always does at least once a week. The cool air of night feels good against Katsuki’s arms and neck. It keeps the imaginary warmth of Deku standing near him…talking to him, reminding him that this is just a recording. However, thanks to Deku’s warnings…they were able to capture Himiko Toga. They forced her to talk within solitary, but her leads only lead to purposeful dead- ends with no Deku. But it wasn't Toga...the person began to have a seizure and their fake form returned back to a random underling. “I-I know…t-they’re going…t-t-to use my voice a-against everyone.” Deku’s crying as he said this, sniffling a little, and he was likely holding the recording device close, cradling it to his body. His voice sounds so close and Katsuki holds his breath when Deku says this, “A-and I-I’m being selfish about this for going along with it, but h-honestly…these recording are the only thing keeping me going a-and…um, you too Kacchan…and isn’t that sad? I keep thinking about our childhood…and even when we both fought All Might together during our battle exams. Using your gauntlets hurt so much…b-but I was so happy.” Katsuki received another recording during the middle of his internship. Together with the pro-hero guiding him, Katsuki ran after the fake Midoriya Izuku running swiftly down the city streets. The fake Deku merged into the shadows with a giggle calling him by his wrong nickname on purpose. Deku never called him Katsuki. Never. Just like he never called Deku, Izuku. Abandoned in the alley, stained with Deku’s blood was another familiar unmarked envelop with Deku’s voice: “Kacchan never liked me you know. Well, no, we used to be friends before he got his quirk…there I said it aloud…everyone stroked his ego and he became just- just…and he might have hated me, b-but looking back at everything, I’m okay with it. I don’t mind him hating me. Then…if he does hear all this one-day, then it’ll be easier. Easier for him to keep going.” People call him cruel, but to Bakugou Katsuki, Deku saying that was…the cruelest thing he’s ever heard. The giggles that followed after Deku said this felt like needles piercing his left ear from how close Deku laughed near the recording device. He could practically feel Kirishima’s and Tsuyu’s eyes looking at him when he first listened to this in front of everyone. Deku continued feverishly speaking, his words spilling out: “Shigaraki Tomura is planning his last final attack, Kacchan. Sorry…I know Todoroki-kun and Uraraka-san, Iida-kun, Kirishima-kun, Sero-kun, Ashido-kun…e- everyone is…I know, I know, but Kacchan, I can’t help but keep focusing on you. All the time, really. I-If you hear this, I know you do, or anyone who knows K- Kacchan…I just want to quickly say that, I know he never explicitly told me that he hated me, but deep down, I knew he hated me a-a lot. I didn’t like thinking about it, kept trying to look past it and kept at trying to get along with him, but a nasty voice in my mind always told me that Kacchan hates me and will always hate me.” No. He didn’t. He never hated Deku. And he told Shigaraki Tomura that on the day Endeavor, Sir Nighteye, Eraser head, Best Jeanist, Kamui Woods, Mt.Lady and Rock Lock, and those who interned with them managed to capture Shigaraki Tomura alive. Pro-Hero Midnight was found alive, in bad condition, but clinging to life thanks to the medical equipment attached to her. Multiple pro-heroes, sidekicks and interns infiltrated the abandoned hospital, sweeping the entire place, fighting with League of Villain sympathizers. Katsuki defeated a lot of people alongside Uraraka, once she jumped through an open window to join the fray. Pro Gunhead burst through the door at the same time with Iida. However, Deku wasn’t anywhere to be seen…and Midnight was unconscious. During the chaos, All for One disappeared from within solitary confinement high-security prison. Toshinori sounded the alarm. The security tapes were tampered. The corruption is more widespread than anyone knew. Midnight awoke from her coma two weeks later and…as if it was all planned, the first thing she said was to check the abandoned hospitals in the major cities. The last tape was discovered in a dilapidated hospital in Fukuoka. Katsuki didn’t feel like pausing Deku’s voice talking against his ear. If Katsuki closes his eyes, he can imaging Deku hugging him from behind, resting his head on his shoulder, before kissing his ear as he speaks for the last time. His voice is raw as he speaks…croaky and tired: “I admire Kacchan a lot…m-maybe a little too much that I was…a-annoying? A nuisance? A-ah well…if you ever see-er, hear this Kacchan, I just…um…want you to know that I don’t want you to keep looking for me.” Cruel. Deku is...fucking cruel, but Katsuki keeps on listening to his voice like a caressing lullaby when the nights seem endless. Deku is crying harder, voice painful with the longest pauses snd more strained than how he talked before. This is his finale: “I don’t think Kacchan would ever love me like I love him so, i-it’s…everything is okay. I’m happy I was able to live a little how I wanted, like how All Might wished for me to be, his teaching, Aizawa-sensei’s support…a-and I was able to fight with you, Kacchan. Battle with you and everything…it was fun.” “I-I don’t know if you’ll mourn me, Kacchan, but…I don’t want you to? I-Is that selfish? I’m being selfish…yeah. But I just want you to think of this a-as…er, t-the last flickers of light of a star you didn’t know was already dead…a-and I-….I don’t think I’m making it out of here, so I just want to say...I love you, Kacchan. I…wish I could have maybe h-hugged you before I-…or maybe gave you, er o-on...the lips...a quick ki-,” Deku giggled weakly before his voice quieted to a whisper, “No, sorry, sorry. I’m being selfish again. I…can’t feel my legs anymore. Mom, I love you, I’m sorry I’m leaving you too early.” “A-All Might…I-I’m sorry I couldn’t, you know…continue it, everything. It’s…dying with me. I-I’d…rather i-it stay with me…a safe…they can n- never…open. Safe. For…ever.” Silence followed for about a whole minute before Deku quietly whispered, lower than how he already was whispering, but tears could be heard as he whimpered, “K…Kacchan…I-I’m…” That was the last message from Midoriya Izuku received and nothing else has appeared to anyone for a long time. Everyone is on the look out for envelopes...anything that seems like it may lead them to Deku. It doesn’t help that the warp quirk the villains have is very powerful. However, people have told them that maybe- Maybe Deku could be dead already with how he sounded in his last message. -But no. The last time someone suggested it, Iida joined Katsuki in berating the person who tried convincing them that Midoriya Izuku is possibly dead. Until Deku’s unmoving body is with them, before them with no more breath, eyes still and staring past them…then Deku is alive. Toshinori Yagi’s anger silenced the insensitive reporter that day, but it didn't stop the press from asking again. The missing posters Midoriya Inko hung up everywhere are still replenished by various sympathizers, since Inko is under a protection program. She’s out of country right now, with Toshinori Yagi’s connections in the United States. MISSING Midoriya Izuku Current Age: 16 Gender: Male Height: 166cm Hair color: Dark Green Eye Color: Green U.A. Student It’s the start of their third year now. And even though Shigaraki Tomura and one of his main fighters, the Todoroki rotten egg AKA Dabi, were captured during their battle-the war is far from over. Midoriya Inko is planning to spend her son’s birthday with Toshinori Yagi over online video connection. Yet, Toshinori Yagi is going to keep working hard, never stopping, with the police friends he trusts like Tsukauchi Naomasa to keep pursuing leads, flushing out double agents and corruption everywhere. All that, even of Izuku’s birthday...especially on Midoriya Izuku’s birthday. Toshinori is stuck in Japan, focused on finding Midoriya Izuku. It’s as if the villains have eyes everywhere. All for One is gone again, so those eyes can be anywhere. The mp3 of Bakugou Katsuki ended as he stared up at the night sky, staring at one particular star a little to the right side of the moon. Going out hiking is one of his favorite things to do, but now…it’s getting harder and harder to continue hiking with the clear, star filled sky above him. Katsuki forgot the last time he hiked…so, he’s made due with just walking around the huge UA campus, taking advantage of the fact that he’s still a student. Graduation is coming. After that, it’s starting as a sidekick, which is the first step to being number one…overthrowing the bastard that let Deku get taken under his supposed watch. The star Katsuki chose to watch for the night disappeared and Katsuki accidentally lit small explosions in his hands. The pops of his explosions snapped him out of his thoughts and Katsuki threw off his headphones. That was enough stargazing for tonight. Maybe tomorrow the star he choses won’t disappear, but right now, Katsuki motioned to go sleep early to the sound of the looping words of Deku. Resting under the covers in his bed, headphones back in his ear, Katsuki closed his eyes to Deku’s voice: “Shigaraki Tomura gave me an audio recording device. He said I have to talk to it everyday-“ Katsuki put one arm over his head and closed his eyes tighter, eyebrows furrowing. Quietly, Katsuki growled out, “…Sleep.” . . The door to his room wasn’t locked and Aizawa peaked at his sleeping student Bakugou Katsuki. Kayama looked down at her feet for a moment, eyes shaking slightly. When she centered her mind again, Pro-hero Midnight’s determined expression returned and motioned for Aizawa to let Bakugou sleep. They let him sleep in peace and Aizawa quietly closed Bakugou Katsuki’s door. . . Halfway through the night Bakugou Katsuki’s phone, before the charge hit 9%, a scarred right hand reached out to plug it into the charger. Midoriya Izuku shook his head and gently lifted Katsuki’s blanket over his shoulders, watching the sleeping boy snore. The black portal of Kurogiri formed underneath Izuku and dropped him away from the inside of UA High with only an envelope at the foot of Katsuki’s bed. As soon as the warp disappeared, the alarms went off on cue. The envelope brushed against Katsuki’s foot when he shot out of bed. . . The League wants a trade: Midoriya Izuku alive and breathing for Shigaraki Tomura's release. Kurogiri quickly plugged Izuku back to the machines that used to be Sensei’s daily burden and enhancers. Now both of them need it together. Quirking his lip a little, Kurogiri whispered as he looked at Izuku, “Stubborn child.” Midoriya Izuku closed his eyes and went back to sleep. He will do whatever he can to see his family and friends again. Anything. Sensei’s hand petting Izuku’s hair lulled him fast to sleep until he is needed again…soon. Soon Sensei will have his Shigaraki back on the game board, but even his precious successor's removal has been a part of the plan - ingeniously thought up by the villain who purposefully got captured. The roles have switched, but All for One understands what his Shigaraki wants, what Shigaraki wants from Midoriya Izuku. The League of Villains will have a second traitor within UA High named Midoriya Izuku: The most loved student at UA High. End Notes To be Continued?   Surprise! Villain Deku! At least he is alive, hm? But at what cost? I needed to get this bad ending sadddd fic out of my brain. It all started out with me thinking of Izuku saying the words, “I know Kacchan never liked me…and he might have hated me, b-but look back at everything, I’m okay with it. I don’t mind him hating me. Then…if he does hear all this one day, then it’ll be easier.” Goddang, it the sadness train hit me with this random and I was like…oh no, I can’t, no, no, no –start writing sad fic- dang it, nooooo and here I am with this drabble. Thank you for reading my indulgent tragedy fic that made me tear up around the end. Feeeeelingsssss.
