Codes: myst ------- Wendy stared across the flat white surface in front of her. Eyes fixed in steely determination, her will of iron practically boiled the air around her. 'I will do this' she thought to herself. 'I am going to win!' Wendy felt, more than saw, her fellow contestants. They ranged either side of her, left and right, a long line of them. 'I'm going to be the first, the fastest, the best.' Wendy clenched her teeth, she was going to do it! Then they started. Some to her left had an advantage, they got away first. But Wendy wasn't going to let that stop her; she knew that she was the best. She was going to win! Her left leg moved first, sliding forward, hesitantly at first, then with greater speed. Planting her left foot firmly down, she moved her right leg up to the left and then past it. SHE WAS WALKING! She'd been told that this would never happen. People like her never walked, it was much too difficult. But Wendy was proving them all wrong. With eyes glistening from her tears she continued. Left leg, right leg, left leg, right leg. Wendy almost cheered, only her absolute concentration on her legs prevented her from crying out in pure joy. There was a crash to her right, three or four contestants fell. She knew that her type nearly always fell. But not her, she, Wendy, was going to complete the course. She was going to win. Now she started picking up a little speed. This was more difficult. She wobbled a little, almost fell, but she steadied herself, smiling as she remained upright. She could do it, she was doing it! Spurred on by her success she put in even more effort, tried harder still, her face a rigid mask of concentration, arms held stiffly straight as they swung forward and back. Wendy strode forward, thankful that she was on such a smooth surface. It was hard enough with this nice white floor. She wouldn't have managed on anything even a little rougher. The contestant next to her teetered and nearly fell into her, only at the last second falling away from her and toppling two others. Wendy dared not look, dared not lose concentration. She'd never done anything as hard as this. But she would triumph, she would win! Concentrating hard, putting every ounce of her will into her steps Wendy increased her speed again, and then again. She was sure that no one like her had ever walked this far or this fast. She was the best. Soon everyone would know it and they would all know her name. She was going to be famous. Now she was walking faster than she'd ever hoped, going faster than she'd dared to think about, moving faster than she'd thought possible. She was walking faster than she'd even dreamed. This exhilarated her, and, if truth be known, frightened her more than a little. Wendy looked up; there to her horror, was a wall. It stretched, left and right in to the distance, further than she could see. And she couldn't stop! Wendy almost panicked but that would lead to disaster, especially at this speed. Eyes flickering left and right Wendy weighed up her options. She'd... ------- Dave looked at the display table. One of the store assistants had started a line of the new walking dolls going from the other side. Only one had managed to reach the side closest to him. He picked it up, his daughter had been nagging him to buy her a Walking Wendy, all of her friends had one, or so they said anyway. He looked at the doll, still going through her walking motions in his hand. She seemed ... pleased ... thrilled ... excited. Now why did he think that? Dave felt the small switch in her back and turned the doll off. He watched her eyes as the battery power faded. Then he noticed it, there was something there, something in her eyes, something that called out to him. Something that died. ------- The End ------- Posted: 2011-05-11 ------- http://storiesonline.net/ -------
