Codes: het ------- It's fun to sit on a park bench and watch people. You can try to fiqure out what they're doing or thinking, where they've been, what they're going to do. Sometimes having company while you're there is good, sometimes not. A very young lady came waddling up, smiled at me then turned and sat with an "oof." "It's getting so hard to walk. My belly's so big and low seems like it's hanging between my legs. This thing is gonna have to come out soon." She commented. "So have you decided what you're gonna do?" I asked. "After nearly nine months, think I'm gonna keep it." "How are you going to handle the birth certificate? Have you given that much thought?" Reaching over and patting one of her hands that were holding her tummy. "Guess it will be in my name with an unknown Father." She said sort of sadly. "You really don't know?" I asked sternly. "Or do you just not want to tell anyone?" "I don't really know. I was crazy for those three months." She said. "Wasn't there one who was with you more than the others?" "No, never did any of them twice." Saying this with a small smile. "None of them were worth trying the second time." "Well there couldn't have been that many? Could there?" "Don't get huffy. I've already told you I was crazy for three months. That's ninety days. Maybe two or three a day for that long? Pick one?" She said. "Don't ever remember a young girl as good looking as you being as free as that." I said reminiscing. "If I had known you back then I would have gone back for seconds and thirds with you." She giggled. "Nuff of that." I said. "Has your Mom or Dad said anything to you lately?" Changing the subject. She looked at me, "They ask the same questions you do. But, I can't give them real answers like I can you. They said I had to move out when I have the baby." "Well, we've already talked about that, you can bring the baby to my place until you can find something of your own." "That's so sweet, thank you." She said. "And use my address for the birth certificate." "Can I?" She asked. "And if you want a father on the birth certificate, you can use my name." "But that wouldn't be honest." She said. "Don't matter, just do it." "Would you get in trouble?" She asked with concern. "Shouldn't, my name's not the same as yours." I said staring straight ahead. "Oh my, I think I wet myself." "Here take my sweater and cover yourself." "Ahh," She groaned in pain. "That was a contraction. I'm gonna have the baby, now" Now I was scared so flipped open my cell phone and dialed 911. When they answered all I could say was, "There is a girl having a baby. The park, downtown, right at the Broadway entrance. Hurry." I lay her back with her knees up. She lay there for only a minute before you could hear the approaching sirens. "Hang on honey. You'll be fine." I said, trying to comfort her. The paramedics came running up with cases and a stretcher. They checked her over quickly then rolled her onto the stretcher. I followed as they rolled her back toward the ambulance carrying her huge purse. They slid the stretcher into the ambulance and started to close the door. She yelled, raising up, "He has to come with me. He has to come too." The young man looked at me, "Do you want to come to the hospital with her?" I smiled and nodded. He put his hand out to help me in. She lay back down, took my hand and said. "Thanks, Grandpa." ------- The End ------- Posted: 2007-07-16 ------- http://storiesonline.net/ -------
