Cupid's Kiss - Chapter Fourteen

It wasnt going to be easy to go against his mother. There were stringent rules in Olympus that governed inter personal relationships and though they were broken time and time again by the erring gods, the punishment that was meted out to them depended upon their position in the hierarchy

Not only had he willingly gone against his mothers wishes and continued to love Psyche but had given his servant the freedom to safe guard Psyche and thus inadvertently given Demetrius the right to rebel against his mother within her own household.

There would be a steep price to pay if he did not gather support to lobby for his cause. Things would have to move fast; there was no time to waste.

Lost in deep thought Cupid remained unaffected by the rich Alaskan beauty till one of his friend silently circled around him and gently settled on his shoulder taking care as not to rip the gods shoulders muscle with its talons.

Cupid reached over and gently caressed the bald eagles feathers lightly. He often visited the nest of these life long companions. Their pure devotion to each other and nobility had won his jaded heart

Sitting at the edge of the high cliff, he watched the female circle and as she settled over the nest he sighed and spoke to the male You are so lucky to have a mate to love for life. For the likes of me love never outlasts eternity. The curse of immortality makes us cruel and selfish

The bald eagle gently cocked his head to a side as if he understood Cupids sorrow he replied Love is a gift that feels eternal even in the briefest moment. Who knows that better than you, my dear friend?

Cupid smiled and humbly bowed his head in front of the eagle You are a wise spirit my old friend and I am grateful to you for reminding me that eternity lies in the passions of our most animated moments.

The eagle felt a wave of deep sorrow from his friend and knew that his heart had not mended as yet. But he had been keeping an eye on Psyche as had been instructed by Demetrius and was well aware that she had been brutally kidnapped by his mother.

He looked over at his mate who seemed to be settling in for the night and then spoke quietly told Cupid Demetrius wanted to have a few words with you. He sounded a little worried. I could barely catch his message as the wind was quite impatient and did not relay it correctly; something to do with centaurs and Psyche.

Cupid sucked a breath in. He would wring that old mans neck if he had done what seemed to be suggested.

Taking his leave of his gentle friends he opened his cloudy wings and flew down to the shimmering lake.

Landing with the grace and sure footedness of a Pegasus he looked around to ensure there was no human around and bent over the waters.

Making a whirl in the water with his right hand he created a portal and demanded his servants attention.

Demetrius, what mischief have you played in my mothers house hold? he asked abruptly.

Demetrius who was tending to a shell shocked Psyche felt a mist clouding before his eyes. He touched Psyches head and muttered Sleep my beauty.

Psyche fell back on the silk pillows with a soft sigh.

Turning back to the mist that was getting thicker and round, Demetrius clasped his hands tightly for the punishment he felt he will surely get once his master realized that he had taken a rather drastic action to save his soon to be new mistress.

As Cupids worried face became clearer in the mist Demetrius bowed low and said I have news for you master and I will not mince words. I had the centaurs raid the temple and they have taken mistress and the servants to their lair.

You did what? Cupids shocked face made the old lepers back tremble with fear but he tried to keep a composed face. He had to explain the situation fast if he wanted to live.

I had no other choice Master. There was no way that I could save your love from the torture the female slaves were putting her through. She was chained and naked, my lord.

He spread his hands helplessly, What was I to do?

Cupids eyes seemed to gleam dangerously through the mist. Are you in touch with the king of the centaurs?

Demetrius bowed and replied humbly Yes, sire. I will ensure that mistress and her women are returned within two days. By then hopefully Psyche would have regained enough strength to finish the rest of her tasks and

Cupid interrupted him And I would have enough time to put things in order.

Rubbing a hand over his tired eyes he muttered I better pay Jupiter a visit, mother would be furious and there might be some innocent collateral.

As the mist began to dissipate Cupids last word rang sinisterly in Demetrius ears Take care old man, you are playing with fire and I may not be able to protect you this time. Make sure that Psyche is protected and keep low when mother returns. Hopefully, I should be back to shield Psyche and you from her when she returns.

Demetrius sighed and turned back to stare at his masters love. Was losing his life worth being loyal to his master? Or was he taking a stand against the ills Cupids mother seemed to be bent on bestowing on Psyche?

He wondered what his master would be doing now to minimize the fall out. On his part he would have to talk to Aeneas, the king of the centaurs to go easy on his mistress.

And all he could do was hope and pray that Aphrodite wouldnt find out that he was behind the mischief at least till her son came back.
