Cupid's Kiss - Chapter Ten

Aphrodite pulled a cowering Psyche into the bedroom were the cursed mirror hung. Yanking her by the hair she threw her victim towards the mirror. Fearing the worst kind of impact Psyche flung an arm over her face to protect herself but found herself to be sucked into the mirror. Its spongy surface seemed to absorb her body, infuse her cells with such surreal energy that she felt like a bulb about to flash before it fused.

Her cry of surprise was cut short and she felt her herself fragment into million pieces and then come together and land on the ground with a hard thump!

Her bones screamed with pain and her vagina hurt as if someone had driven a spike through it. Moaning in pain she squeezed her eyes shut and wondered if Aphrodite had finally decided to kill her.

Cupping her triangle of passion she curled into a ball of misery and cried. She cried for all the pain and loneliness she had suffered and for the love that was lost to her.

Life had no meaning for her anymore. In abject misery she wondered why she had been selfish in her love. Not only had she put her lover in danger but also her family and friend. How could she have been so greedy in her wants and needs?

Turning her face into the damp ground she cried harder but slowly she found the soothing smell of the wet earth sooth her inner being. A strange feeling of love and compassion blanketed and soothed her heart.

Raising herself on her elbow, Psyche looked around. She was lying at the edge of a lake. The water gently lapped near her ankles and invited her to take a peek in its shimmering depths.

To her delight she saw little goldfish swim towards her. But closer she got the sooner she realized that something was wrong with them. As she bent closer she saw a peculiar light shine through the gills and their eyes looked like human eyes.

Psyche gasped and was about to move away when a fish surfaced and spoke in an ethereal voice Psyche, dont be scared. We are the cursed ones forced to live the life worse than that of animals. We are eaten by the fish of the lake and yet find ourselves spawn here again and again for eternity.

Pity engulfed her heart and she reached out a hand as if to touch the fish.

Careful a familiar voice stopped her abruptly. Surprised she turned and found herself staring at Aphrodite who seemed to blend with the land of extraordinary beauty. She blinked as the setting sun shone on Aphrodites red hair giving it the halo of molten lava. The land had a Greco layout, gentle slopes dotted with cypress trees and yet there was sharpness, a vibration to everything.

It was as if the land itself was singing a song of love, it was beckoning her to lie down in its arms and never rise again.

Slowly she stood up and felt her muscles protest. She stared at her torturer and yet held her tongue.

Aphrodite seemed to be in a nasty mood. Her clothes looked disheveled and her composure strained.

Psyche felt the anger emanate from the entity and took a wary step back towards the lake.

If you take another step into the lake there will be nothing left of you. Aphrodite warned her in a cold voice.

Psyche turned and saw the gold fish tearing each other till there was nothing left of them.

She gasped and took a step back; the frenzied act of feeding scared her. There was no serenity here she realized. She had to be wary of the land and its owner.

Appearances here were deceptive and she could well lose her life if she wasnt careful.

No one said this was your play ground Psyche. I got you hear to put you through your final tests. If you fail, then you will become one of them.

She pointed that the fish that were jostling and biting each other.

A tremor passed through Psyches small frame. Death seemed to be a better alternative than being a fish for eternity.

As a slightly subdued Psyche trailed behind Aphrodites luscious frame she wondered how Cupid was. And just as she thought about him, the headache had been a constant companion increase by thousand fold. She winced and felt her jeans pockets for her Ibuprofens but then realized that she had left her painkillers on the dresser before taking a shower.

Tears gathered in her eyes and threatened to fall. Her last words to her family were full of spite and venom. When was she going to learn to control her temper?

She seemed to be doomed to hurt the people she loved the most. Psyche bit her lip and prayed that her father and sister would look beyond the hurt they caused each other and made peace.

Love was all that mattered. It was a lesson she learnt the hard way but now it seemed to late to rectify the situation.

A small sob escaped her thin lips and made Aphrodite turn and stare at her coldly.

What is it, wench? She sneered.

Psyche felt her fingers tremble slightly. She had never felt so unsure and out of her element before.

Jamming her hands inside her pockets, she tilted her stubborn chin upwards and responded with false bravo, You had no right to tear me away from my family. This was not a part of our deal.

Her torturer stood still and stared at the tears that belied Psyches words. A twinge of pity sneaked through her heart and made her furious causing her to be unduly harsh towards her sons lover.

You seem to be a very demanding bitch maybe its time I taught you what obedience was all about.

Psyche felt her palms become moist and apprehension made her heart beat faster. Why did she needle Aphrodite so? The being had shown her malevolent powers time and time again and yet Psyche refused to be wise in her dealings with her.

And now she was finally going to pay for her foolishness and there was no where to run. She closed her eyes and saw Cupids tender face float in her minds eye. Love and fear vied for dominance and it was love that made her fling her shoulders back as she remembered Cupids tear drenched eyes whisper his love for her for the last time. She was willing to give her life to be with him.

Closing her eyes, she let her hands fall to her side and slowly raised her face. She was ready to face Aphrodites judgment even at the cost of death.

Anger seeped through Aphrodites lithe body. How dare a mere human defy her will? Psyches indomitable spirit was a thorn on her side and she pledged to break it as swiftly and precisely as an arrow piercing, there was going to be no leniency, no pity towards this callow woman.

Psyche felt her clothes rip from her body and felt a sword of searing pain slice her body into two withering part. Naked and broken, she lay on the ground, gasping, shuddering; wanting the pain to stop that seemed to twist her guts into a heaving mass.

Bile rose up and made her throw up her dinner and yet, the pain seemed to get worse. She curled into a mass of vulnerable flesh and hair.

Unwilling to let her heart melt at the sight of a broken human crying for mercy, Aphrodite strengthened her resolve to not only test Psyches vow of love more severely but see if she was willing to give her very life for her son, Cupid.

Turning her back to Psyche she clapped her hands twice and walked towards a Greek temple that appeared out of nowhere that was so breathtaking its beauty that had Psyche not been reduced to a ball of pain she would have been struck dumb by its magnificence.

The marble temple was simple in its design and replicated the ruins back in Greece yet the mausoleum seemed to shine with inner brilliance as if infused with the rays of a full moon.

The land around Psyches withering form transformed into a garden teeming with beautiful floral and fauna. The flowers seemed to bend towards Aphrodite as she passed through the garden, seeking a little audience from their mistress who generally dotted on them with singular attention but today she did not seem to have a glance to spar.

Deer and peacocks bowed before their owner and eyed Psyche with gentle curiosity. It had been a while since their mistress that got a wayward disciple home with her and they wondered what her fate would be; those who had fallen from grace lived in water and others who betrayed her were banished to Hades kingdom.

As Aphrodite approached her home, three youthful women of sensuous beauty ran down to meet her with so much joy on their face as if they were her very own children.

They bowed before their mistress and gasped Madam, you are home.

Aphrodite caressed one of them on the head and tenderly replied, How have you been my little ones.

Blossoming under her attention, the women smiled prettily and twittered We missed you so much. Its been so quite over here and Cupid..

Aphrodite frowned, What about my son? Have you not been taking good care of him?

Anger clouded Aphrodites smooth brows and gave her a menacing appearance. The women felt their hearts twist with fear. They did in want to incur her wrath.

Master doesnt let any one near him save that leper you took pity on and sheltered. He has been taking care of Master while you were gone.

Aphrodite waved a careless hand to beckon them to stand up and shook her head in exasperation.

Where is he? she asked.

Master is lounging in the sun room, Madam. They replied and began to glide behind their mistress.

Aphrodite looked back over her shoulder and said in a commanding voice One of you better go back to the lake and pick up that naked creature that came with me. Make haste and remember my son should not know about her being here at any cost. She has to be dressed in peasant clothes and given nothing more than wine and stale bread.

And before she entered inside her Temple she gave a dire warning If my son finds out that she is here the consequences will be hard for three of you to bear. Do you understand?
