Terra Chapter 28, Bars and Churches Tom clutched his head in his hands, looking about the room. He had a strong desire to vomit, tasting bile in his mouth. He slowly sat up, surveying the room. It was late morning, he could tell that much. The light was different than when he normally woke up. His bloodshot eyes were still too sensitive to light to find the room's clock. Shaking his face he walked to the door, wondering who the hell was banging on his door at this time in the morning, whatever the time was. "What?" Tom asked, squinting his eyes only long enough to see the face of Esteban Capistrano standing outside. "Tom, it's nine thirty. We were supposed to meet at nine o clock," Capistrano reminded him, taking only moments to see the hangover written all over Tom's face. "Ugh, never mind the meeting Capistrano, I'm going to sleep in. We'll talk later," Tom said, closing the door. "Uh Tom," his associate said, managing to wedge his hand in the crack of the door, "How did everything go?" "Huh?" Tom didn't know what he was talking about. As the realization as to why he was so hung over became apparent, he dashed towards his bed looking for it. "It's got to be here somewhere!" he shouted, feeling his head and stomach lurch in concert as he searched near his bed. "What does?" Capistrano asked, wondering what the hell was going on. "Yes! Here it is!" Tom said, holding it up proudly like a trophy. "What…is that a sample?" his eyes grew wide, watching Tom's hands holding tightly onto it. "Yes it is," Tom beamed, feeling slightly better from his hangover. "I've got to get to that meeting." "Well it is your meeting Tom, I'm sure you can show up late," Esteban said, wanting to grab the sample itself, to feel it in his own hands. 'Maybe Tom is almost as good as they say he is.' He thought, following behind him. * "What are we doing here Yoshi?" Terra asked, watching the scenery fly by. She had woken up early, and couldn't get back to sleep. She wanted to do something, but Nadia had slept in. Yoshi offered to take her to the back car, where he could go outside to smoke a cigarette. "Damned anti tobaccoists, even ruined a train ride," Yoshi had said, before bringing her out. Though there was something different about the cigarettes now. It was as if they didn't have that edge to them of living on the wild side. Something about not having to worry about the physical repercussions made the cigarettes a little less dangerous, a little less enjoyable, if not less addictive. "I don't know sometimes Terra," Yoshi said, sucking in a large cloud of smoke. "What are we going to do?" the redhead asked, smiling at a flock of birds flying overhead. She hadn't seen birds in over a month. They looked pretty the way that seemed to follow the monorail. "We're going to do what we can," Yoshi said, with smoke billowing out of his mouth. "I can't do anything Yoshi. I don't know how to do anything. Everyone thinks I'm a grown up, that I should know everything. But everything is new to me," she sighed, resting her arms on the rail guard. "I don't know what to tell you Terra. Honestly, I don't know what to tell myself lately. You think you have it tough, we all do. We all learn and experience things for the first time. I've been a man until now. You don't have any idea how difficult it is to menstruate for the first time at sixty years old," Yoshi said with a laugh, trying to cheer her up. "But you have skills. You know stuff. You're a scientist. You can figure everything out. Nadia's a doctor, and she can help people. And Giselle's an intelligence officer, whatever that is. Sergio can run a space ship. Everyone spent their lives learning things. But me, I can't do anything. I haven't learned anything," Terra pouted, letting her head slip onto her hands. "Yeah, some scientist I am. I don't have any clue about what's going on really. Oh I can say what's happening here, and some vague description of why. But I don't understand the mechanics behind it," Yoshi said, laughing sarcastically to himself. "But it doesn't matter. We do what we can Terra. Learn what we can and go on to do what we have to. You have to give it time. Nadia spent almost a decade learning to be a doctor, even though she was a prodigy. I've studied science my whole life." "But it's not just that. Don't you see, I don't get anything Yoshi! I don't know how to drive a car, how to cook, how to shop for stuff, or order a train ticket. I'm just not good at anything. Everyone knows something, and have other abilities. Even David is good with computers," Terra grumbled. The breeze felt nice, of course anything felt nicer than wind blown sand. She had managed to get most of the dirt out of her hair. What she would give for a shower now… "David, David," Yoshi said, flicking the ash off his cigarette. "What about him?" Terra asked, stepping aside to avoid the ash. She didn't like when Yoshi smoked, but then again, she didn't want to stop him. At least he was nice about it, blowing the smoke away from her. For some reason, she felt safer when he was there. Still, he wasn't as nice as Nadia… "What do you think about him?" he asked nicely. "He, he's, I uh, I don't know. He has been really mean to me. I mean really mean. But he has helped me too. A couple of times. I, I don't know. When he, I mean he didn't save me, Nadia did, but he stopped the soldier from hurting me. He took my place though, getting beat up like that. I, I don't think I ever really thanked him. The soldier, he didn't really hurt me. I don't know if he really could have with the nanobots. But David didn't know that and he came in, and, and, it's my fault that he got hurt Yoshi. It's my fault that my mom got captured, she must have been out looking for me. It's my fault, just because I was selfish," Terra said, feeling the familiar drops of tears in the corners of her eyes. "Don't blame yourself Terra. I was just wondering, why you kissed him?" Yoshi asked cautiously. "I wanted to give him the nanobots, to make him better, to cure his cancer. But I managed to mess that up somehow," she answered morosely. "Is that the only reason?" Yoshi asked, speaking and smoking with caution. "What?" Terra asked nervously. "Did you, well, just want to help him that one time? Or was there something else?" Yoshi asked, knowing he was deeply in a bad spot but he couldn't help but want to know. "It, it wasn't just that one time," Terra admitted hesitantly. "I…see," he answered. He didn't really, but he felt obligated to say something. He didn't want to make the girl ashamed of herself, or start crying. "If, if I tell you, will you promise not to tell Nadia?" Terra asked, feeling an immense burden of guilt come over her. She knew it was wrong to lie, and she had bent the truth before, but now to keep secrets… it weighed heavily on her. But at the same time she didn't know if what she was doing was right. "Of course," Yoshi answered almost instantly. "I, we kissed. Not just to pass the nanobots," Terra said, blushing. "And not just, you know, kissing. We started to go…further. He, he felt my, my penis." She said closing her lips tightly. "Oh, I, I see. He, he knows that you're a futanari then?" Yoshi nodded. "Yeah. And you too. I mean, well I guess everyone does. But he, he got mad. He called me a freak, and, and I ran out. Since then we, I mean, I just don't know how I feel about him. I guess it's better now. I mean, I was confused before. I had feelings for him. Now, I know how he feels. I just wish I could stop thinking about him," Terra said. A moment later the train jarred. "What was that?" Yoshi asked, grasping the railing tightly. "I, I think, we're stopping," Terra said, pointing out to a city on her side. It had previously been hidden by a large hill. "Maybe we're at Amazonis?" "Let's go find the others," Yoshi said, flicking his butt out. He guided Terra down the hallway to their room, finding the rest of the group packing up quickly. "There you are," Nadia said, searching through her bag. Because she had slept with Terra, she needed to hide the gun in her back. She had stowed it underneath her bed the night before, but wanted to make sure that the revolver was still there. "We're here," David said, tapping his foot impatiently. "Where are we?" Terra asked, watching everyone in the room as they finished gathering their belongings. "Are you deaf? Every five minutes they announced we were getting closer and closer to Amazonis," Sergio said gruffly. Spending his first night on the planet on a couch wasn't especially comfortable. Not when he had paid for the damned beds in the first place. "Oh, they didn't have," Terra began to explain. "Come on, we're going to be there soon. I for one have no reason to stick around here," Giselle said, taking her bag. "Oh, okay. Um, give me a minute," Terra said, looking for her bag and her plant. It took five minutes, but the party of six was ready to disembark. Walking out to the nearest exit, they quickly realized that they were the only people on the train who were leaving. "When we get there, be smart," Sergio said, knowing he needed to warn the naïve girls of bed bugs and other nonsense. "Be smart?" Terra didn't understand. "Don't talk to anyone, don't look at anyone, and don't answer to anyone. Don't look weak and don't get in a fight. Don't show money, jewelry, valuables, anything that would make you look like a target. Don't talk about things in the open you shouldn't, and don't split up, as there's strength in numbers," David said, recounting a few of the various lessons he had been taught as a child. "Is there anything we can do?" Yoshi asked sarcastically, noticing the concern on Terra's face. "Yes, shut up and walk," Giselle said as the monorail slowed down to a halt, and the doors opened. The group filed out quietly, looking upon the city. Whatever expectations the futanaris had, they weren't accurate. Amazonis wasn't a gorgeous city, but neither was it a shelled and smoking one. The city was poor, but there were plenty of skyscrapers in good repair, with roads of concrete paved the way for the plethora of people. The streets were littered with vendors and businessmen, youths and bums. It was a living city, with it's rich and it's poor, it's main streets and it's dark alleyways. Were it not for the crime or the lack of reasonable law enforcement it would be no better or worse than the average Terran city. As they limped through the main city streets, Terra did as best she could, carrying her plant and bag as close to her body as she could. She didn't want to be a burden, so she just stayed close to everyone. She couldn't help but look at the people and the places. This was such a new experience for her. The group walked slowly, as sunburns and soreness took their toll. A night of sleeping on a train isn't like a normal night of sleep. It's so active it becomes a restless slumber. Still to those accustomed to gravity, sleeping in a bed where the blanket would stay on you was a nice change of pace. Of course their pace didn't matter right now, as nobody wanted to bring up the fact that they had nowhere to go at the moment. "Spare some change?" asked a gruff hooded figure, leaning against the wall of a building. "I, I'm sorry. I don't have any change," Terra said sincerely. "Yeah, yeah, thanks anyways lady," he said indignantly, turning his covered head away from her and towards the rest of the group. "No, really, I don't have any change. I don't have any money," Terra protested. She wasn't lying. "Just leave him Terra," Yoshi said, stepping between the two of them. "It's just a broken down old bum anyway." "If I'm so broken down," the figure said, taking his hood off, "Why don't you fix me?" "Is that…?" Erraticus?" David asked, eyeing carefully. "Well, well, if it isn't the last son of the house of Tracy. I had thought you dead, James would have been proud," the hooded figure said, approaching David with open arms. "He might still be," David said, hugging the older man. He was a fool, but he was his fool. "Erraticus Souse, the biggest drunk and pain in the ass I've ever known," Giselle said sourly. "You know this…man?" Yoshi asked, trying to size him up. "I believe you mean this broken down old bum. And yes, I've known David for most of his life, and annoyed Giselle for quite some time as well," Erraticus said, rubbing David's greasy and unkempt hair, before wiping it on his graying hooded coat. "This sum'bitch gave me my first beer," David said proudly. "If memory serves you were twelve or so at the time," he laughed, wondering if it were closer to ten. He had wanted to congratulate the boy on his first kiss. "What are you doing down here, you old dog?" David asked, thankful to see a familiar face. "Begging for my supper, most days," he said, scratching the gray stubble on his face. "A liquid one eh?" David laughed. "You should be lucky to be here," Giselle said, snapping her fingers and waving her hand as she began to walk forward. "Well I suppose I'm not important enough to take out. I wondered when my bullet would come. But after months, either it's typical Martian efficiency or I'm going to actually survive this one," Erraticus said, returning his hood. "Nice to meet you Mr. Erraticus. I really don't have any change," Terra said, still protesting her innocence. "It's Mr. Souse, but don't call me that. I prefer Erraticus. Anyways, I believe you girl," he said with a laugh. "From the look on your face I don't think you've said a lie in your life." "Thank you," Terra said, taking that as a compliment and not sarcastically, as he had meant it. Nadia stepped in closely, eyeing this man carefully. She was glad that she had taken Kyle's gun out of the luggage and into her pocket. "What is a pretty group of girlies like you doing in Amazonis? With this scumbag, old space dog, and pain in the ass? I'll let you guess who is who," Erraticus said with a hidden grin. "Things that had best be spoken in other places," David said in a hushed tone. "Well then, we should whet our whistles. How about your big sister's?" he laughed. "I didn't know you had a sister," Terra said, thinking for a moment. She didn't think to ask about anyone's family, really. "I don't," David said, rolling his eyes. He had always hated that nickname, ever since he was young… "Where is she living now?" "She lives upstairs, but she works downstairs at her bar," he answered. He always enjoyed dropping bits of news like that. "Bar? We should probably check it out, could be important," Sergio laughed. Being on Mars, hell, being on a planet made him want to drink. So did being in space. "I didn't know she had a bar…" David hadn't been in this area for going on a year. And most of the people he knew weren't around any more, one way or another. "Yes, on the corner of Clement and 42nd Streets. One of the few decent bars running around now. But, well you know Sofrito. I'd be more worried about the people who start the fights rather than her getting rid of them," Erraticus had found that one out the hard way. "It sounds good, you lead the way Erraticus," Sergio said, smacking the man's back. "Not right now I'm afraid, I've got to do some things. Haven't quite earned my supper. Giselle, I think perhaps you should come with me. I know some associates you might want to meet up with," he said, nodding in another direction. 'The info she has might be worth a few meals.' "Oh no, she stays with us," Sergio said. "Oh no, I go where I please," Giselle stated, stepping away from Sergio. "There is no way I'm going to allow you to get out of my sights," Sergio narrowed his eyes. "Look Sergio," Giselle said, lowering her voice." I was willing to play the role of the accused when I was on your ship. But you don't have any evidence or any command here. This is Mars, and what you say doesn't mean a hill of shit. What are you going to do if I go?" Sergio bit his tongue, knowing that she had a point. He was likely as unwelcome here as she was. Perhaps even more so, if she had kept her identity secret. "Is this…goodbye?" Terra asked. She hadn't expected Giselle to leave so quickly. She had imagined them all working together. "Good riddance," Yoshi grumbled. "Wait, you were supposed to help us with what we are trying to do," Nadia said in a hushed tone. "I will do whatever I can. But with most of…them…gone, I don't know what can be done for now," Giselle said honestly. She was hoping that Erraticus at least know someone who could get her in contact. The lines of communication were probably all severed, and everyone went back into hiding. Everyone that was alive. "Where can we meet you Giselle?" David asked, the speaking out of friendship. "I'll be around. I don't think that things are quite over between all of us," Giselle said, offering her hand to David. "Don't worry David, I'll be keeping my eyes on this one," Erraticus said, nodding. "Then no need for goodbyes. Good luck," David said, taking her hand. It seemed strange to shake a woman's hand, but how weird would it have been for him to hug her? "I'll catch you later big shot. Sofrito's, Clement and 42nd. Drop in and say hi, I'm sure she'd love to see you," Erraticus said, offering his hand. "I better see you there soon," He said, taking his hand. "Goodbye ladies," Erraticus waved his hand, leading Giselle in another direction. "Where are they going?" Terra asked. "Probably better not to ask. What's more important, is what are we going to do?" Nadia asked rhetorically. "Room," Sergio said, "You're going to have to find rooms." "We are? What about you?" Nadia answered. "I've got a wife and a house to sleep at. Unless her boyfriend is over tonight…" Sergio mused, rubbing his gristly white beard. "Can, can we take a break? Please?" Terra asked, hoping that someone would take her seriously, unlike in the desert. "I'm going to the bar, there's seats there," David suggested. "Whoa, no, no, we're not going to some seedy bar," Nadia objected. "Seedy? Hell, the hotels are going to be seedy. I've known Sofrito forever, she's not going to take shit from anyone. Besides it's like ten in the morning, what's going to be going on at a bar at ten in the morning?" he objected back. "Maybe, we can go together?" Terra suggested, trying to make some peace. "We've got to get a room Terra," Nadia said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Now?" Terra said, trying not to whine. "Look, I'll take her to the bar. In fact, I'll bring you there. If you don't want to stay, then leave. If she has your permission, then she'll stay. It's only a couple of klicks anyway," David said, waving in one direction of the street. "It won't hurt to check," Yoshi thought aloud. "It's even on the way," David said a bit of a lie. "Lead on then," Nadia said, following behind him. The walk there was a quick one, and a quiet one. Terra was content to see the sights, and Nadia and Yoshi did their best to shield her from any perceived threat, while David led the group down the streets he had known so well as a child. It would have been a quicker walk, but he had intentionally gone the long way, skipping the back alleys. "I guess this would be the place," David said, looking up at the gaudy neon sign, exclaiming the name Sofrito in bright yellow and green on top. It was just like her. "Well this doesn't look that bad," Yoshi said, rubbing his chin. The windows were clean, the sign worked, the walls were well painted, everything looked in decent condition. Even the street around it looked decent. "Well I'm going to go in. You can go to the hotels if you want, but you're not going to have any luck. You don't have much money," David reminded them. "Well we have to figure out something. I had expected the…I had expected more help," Nadia said dismissively. "Sergio will help you. Go and check it out. Heck, take Terra if you're really that scared. Either way come back. Last I checked you were supposed to patch me up," David said. "You know it's not that bad of a place," Yoshi said, thinking about what Terra had said about David. 'Maybe it's young love, well, something like that. Let them sort it out, with Nadia being a mother/lover combo. Heh, I've seen that video…' he mused. "No, it's not a dive," Nadia begrudgingly admitted. "And after all, she's just going to sit down, right? Not much else for her to do if she comes with us," Yoshi continued, trying to egg the situation on. "But why does she have to stop off at a bar?" Nadia asked the obvious question. "When in Rome…" Yoshi thought, looking at the building. "Seriously, it's where we are. Where else could we drop her off? At least we know David will be here." "Why do we have to drop her off? And he's not exactly Hercules," Nadia said. "Are you gonna keep talking about us like we're not fucking here?" David asked, getting a little upset at the Hercules remark. "Do you really want to stay here Terra?" Nadia asked. "If you don't think I should, I won't Nadia," Terra said, watching David give her a dirty look. Though she could feel the disgust at what she said, she couldn't decipher the meaning behind it. 'Why did she have to put it that way? Now it's all about me. Why don't I want her here? Is it instincts, or is it trust? It's not that bad of a place, and there's even a cop walking the street. I'm acting like her…mother…' "Okay, we should be back soon," Nadia said. "I'll look forward to it," Terra said, hugging Nadia. "What, no hug for me?" Sergio said with a brief laugh. "Ugh, come on," David said, opening the door. "Buh bye," Terra said, waving. She just wanted to sit and rest for a while. She didn't understand what the fuss was about. The place didn't look bad to her at all. A little dirty, maybe. And the bright neon signs that flashed on all of the screens kind of hurt her eyes. But there wasn't even anyone in there. Well, there was one person. "David? How the hell are you ya little brat?" was the first noise which bounced off of the walls of the bar. "Good Sofrito, what the hell is going on with you?" David asked, offering his hand. "I'm doing well little bro," she said, getting up from the black hard plastic bar. It was the only place that didn't have a flashing screen on it. Terra was surprised to see her react like she was David's sister. She didn't look anything like him. Her skin was a different color, a light brown that contrasted greatly against David's bright white skin, which was now sunburned. She was obese, by quite a bit, while David was too skinny. "Just got in town, and heard you started a rat hole and I figured I would OOMPH" David began to say as she clutched him in her large arms powerfully. Her arms weren't the only large things on her body. She was a much heavier woman, and Terra noticed the many rolls on her chin, the large potbelly that bulged forward. "You're his sister?" Terra asked nervously, hoping she wouldn't give her such a tight hug. "No. You his girlfriend?" She asked loudly, frightening Terra a bit. "Oh, no, uh," Terra said, starting to blush. She didn't know why she felt so flabbergasted. It was like she didn't know how to answer the question. "Ah don't take it personally. I don't know any other girls who'd admit to being with this runt," Sofrito said, smacking Terra's arm. "Speakin' of which you reek Dave, even worse than usual. What the hell have you been doing anyway, rollin' 'round in shit?" Sofrito asked. "About the same thing, been in space," David said, sitting down on a barstool. "No shit, space huh? So what, had to go to another fucking planet to find a cute girl who'd stay with you?" she snorted, laughing. "Cut me some slack today Sof, I'm not in the mood," David said, propping his body up against the bar. "Whew, alright but I can't let a stink that bad in my bar. Hey red, take a shower, Dave, you're up next," she said, returning behind the bar. "Me and my little bro got some shit to talk about." "My name is Terra," she said, pausing a moment before asking, "Where is the shower?" "Go through the back door there behind the bar Terra. End'a the hallway. Don't use up all the fucking hot water either, shit costs a fortune. Ain't got much soap or none of that hoity toity crap but just washing that shit off of you will make you look fuckable at least," she laughed. "Thanks," Terra put her flowerpot down, and glanced at them before walking behind the bar and going out back. There was a long dirty hallway, which lead to a bathroom. It wasn't much of a bathroom really, barely enough room to walk in and lock the door. Just a toilet and a small shower stall. Terra didn't even think that Sofrito could fit in it. She sighed, taking the bag off of her back. She reached in, managing to fish out a clean pair of boxers, a bra, and a dress. She didn't have much else to wear, and in the heat, the sundress seemed like a nice idea. It was flowery and reminded her of the dress her mom let her borrow. "Mom," Terra mouthed silently, taking her clothes off. It wasn't the first time that she'd asked herself if she would ever see her again. She pulled the shirt off, and smelled it. It did reek, but she had become accustomed to the nasty smell. She dropped her pants and rolled them up with her shirt. As she turned the water on, she began to think about what had happened in the bar. Sofrito had taken her by surprise. The woman was very direct it seemed. But she didn't understand her hesitancy at the question. 'I'm not his girlfriend. Why did it bother me?' She found a bar of soap, and after picking out the hair from it, let it under the water to test the temperature. She took a deep sigh as she felt the water pour over her body. As she lathered herself, her mind couldn't help but return to the question Yoshi had asked her earlier. "Terra, why did you kiss him?" Yoshi had asked cautiously. When she had given him her answer, to help him, he asked the more nagging question, "Is that the only reason?" 'Is that it? I, I wanted to help him. Help ease his suffering. But I, I didn't do anything to help, did I?' she dropped her head against the wall, letting the water trickle over her greasy and filthy hair. She could see the brown water drip down the drain. She knew it was vanity, but she didn't like being filthy like this. 'Why did I kiss him?' Terra asked herself. She loved Nadia, wanted to be with her, but it felt different now. The sex was great, but it had grown more beyond lust, or even love. It was almost like family love to her now. But that didn't answer her question. 'WHY did I kiss him?' she asked herself again. 'I, was it just the alcohol? He's not like the others. Mom is, well, my mom. But Nadia has always been there to help me too, especially with mom being gone. Even Tom and Yoshi, they never did anything bad or mean to me. They treated me, I don't know, like a little girl who needed to be comforted. I guess I did. But him, he, he's done bad things to me. But he's also done good things. He helped me when I was being hurt. It wound up hurting him. But he hurt me too, not with fists but calling me a freak, I, I cried just as much. Does that make up for it?' 'I'm not a freak, at least, I don't think I am,' Terra thought, as she began to wash her crotch. Though still hairless, she had become filthy down there. A month of not cleaning her genitals caused some nastiness which not even nanobots could fix. 'I'm different. I'm not like other people. Mom, and Nadia, and Yoshi, that's it. Just four of us in the world, worlds I mean. Well just one, we're all on Mars now. So is that it? Is he just not able to deal with how we're different? Am I asking too much from him? What AM I asking of him?' 'David is who he is. He belongs here. He's more at home with his people here. I don't even think he cares enough about me to help me find mom. I tried to help him. Did I do anything good? Did I help? How can I expect anything from him if I have nothing to offer him?' "AH!" Terra screamed and jumped as her entire body became wrapped in cold water. She almost fell scrambling out of the stall onto the slippery tile of the floor. She heard the pipes begin to rumble, and then rest. The steam slowly began to return to the shower and she tested it, feeling the warmth return. She decided to not dilly dally for fear of another cold surprise. She quickly rinsed the soap off of her body and washed her hair. There were too many questions, too few answers, and not enough time. She didn't want to waste the hot water. She stepped out, and catching her body in the mirror, smiled contently. She was clean, and looked normal. Or at least as normal as she could ever hope to be. Lacking a towel she paused to let her body drip-dry. As she waited she used Nadia's comb to untangle as much of her hair as she could. Once the snarls were out, her naturally curly hair looked radiant. Dressing quickly she looked down at her shoes. They were in almost as bad as the clothes she had been wearing. She dug in her bag and pulled her other shoes. They weren't sneakers like she had been wearing, they were more like dress shoes, black leather with a strap. She didn't have much of a choice and put them on, before she returned back out to the bar. She watched David and Sofrito chatting and laughing. She was happy to see him laugh. Their heads turned towards her as she walked out. She noticed the look on David's face especially, and she couldn't help but feel self-conscious. "Daaaaaamn red," Sofrito said, catcalling. "David if you don't fuck her I just might. Be the hottest piece of ass I've had." "Um, thank you," Terra replied, not sure how to take it. She hadn't been called a hot piece of ass before. "Sit your ass down at the bar, pretty face like yours is good for business," the bartender ordered. "Oh uh, no thank you. I'm actually kind of hungry. I was hoping that later we could go somewhere where I could find something to eat," Terra said as nicely as she could. She wasn't sure yet, but she had a feeling she wasn't going to like Sofrito too much. "What do you think I call it a bar and grill for? Sit your ass down and I'll whip up somethin for ya! We ain't got no salads but what we do got is about as good as you are gonna find in Amazonis. Whaddaya like?" she asked, digging around for the menu button. She was useless with machines, and couldn't stop the flashing screens if her life depended on it. "You've had me sitting here for a half an hour and you didn't tell me you served food?" David asked, feeling the same rumble in his stomach. "You kiddin? It's a fucking four star bar," she said, hocking a phlegm into the trash. "You make burgers?" David's mouth positively watered. "Big as your head, for the right price. What do you want? Red?" she asked, pointing at Terra with a menu activated on the screens around the bar, including the ten foot one behind her head. "Oh, I, I don't have any money," Terra answered honestly. "It's okay, I got you this time," David said, reaching into his wallet. "No, it's, it's okay, you don't have to," Terra didn't know how she felt right now, and being in someone's debt seemed like a bad way to figure her feelings out. 'Once again he wants to do something nice for me…why?' "Red, Mr. Bigshot here said he'll buy you lunch. Take the free meal, they don't show up that often. You don't even have to fuck him, just keep him company," Sofrito said, laughing. "God Sof, just shut the fuck up. I'll buy you lunch Terra, what do you want?" David said, pulling out some of the money he got from John. "I don't know, uh," Terra said, looking at the menu. "You know what would be good? A couple of double hamburgers, with bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, ketchup and mustard, on a toasted bun…oh, and a mountain of garlic fries," David said definitively. He had been lusting after that kind of meal for a while. "That sounds…big," Terra said, trying to determine if she would like such a large group of food combined. "Sounds like lunch. Two double burgers with the works, bad breath on the side. Should be ready in no time. Why don't you clean your stinking ass while I cook it up? Hopefully red here hasn't used up all of the hot water," the bartender said, fishing up some of the food from the fridge. "Be right back," David said, disappearing behind the door.. "Yeah you better be or I'll get your girl going without you," she said, reaching under the bar for a glass. "What'll ya drink?" "Oh, I, uh, don't have any money," Terra said, still getting accustomed to the concept of commerce. "On the house sweet ass. You look too tense," Sofrito said, tossing a bag of fries in the deep fryer. "I, I don't really want to drink right now," Terra answered honestly, after having considered lying about a reason why. "Ah I guess it is early. This place is more alive at nighttime. Guess everyone's mugging fools for cash. I'm a people person, that's why I do this shit," she said, slapping meat on the grill. "Tell you the truth, most of these fuckers ain't even worth it. Don't get a lot of girls in here these days, and none of them look like you." "How do I look?" Terra asked. "I don't fucking know. Like it's your first time around the block. Not innocent, just, shit. You got a lot goin behind that pretty face, but I'm thinking you're not used to sayin what you think. You're probably too good for a dump like this," the bartender answered, throwing down some bacon. "I'm too good…don't you like the people who come here? Why else would you open a bar?" Terra asked. "Like I said, I like people. Never been the one to deal with shit either. When you're a girl in Amazonis you can't take crap from anyone. If I gotta take care of people, I take care of them," Sofrito said with a bit of pride in her voice. "I didn't know, this is my first time here," Terra said honestly. "Just keep an eye out. I'll tell you one thing though, a guy like David, even though he's got shit for brains, is one of the better ones," she said, watching Terra about to protest. "No, no, I get it, you two ain't exactly fucking. That's fine, shit, make him work for it girl. Don't give it all away if you don't have to." "David isn't my boyfriend," Terra said, with more conviction this time. "Okay," Sofrito said, taking a slow pull from her drink. "But remember when you came out of the bathroom? I thought David was gonna pop a boner big enough to close his jaw the way he was lookin' at ya. Maybe he ain't gonna come out and say it, but he's got somethin' for ya. Now I ain't saying you should jump his bones. But you could do a lot worse. A lot worse. I seen guys that just, fuck it, they don't know how to deal with some Friday night slut, let alone a piece o ass like you. My little bro, shit, he wouldn't send ya home crying with a black eye like some of these knuckle dragging fuckheads." "Oh," Terra said, bad memories coming back to her, of weeping after the harsh words of the boy in question. "Shit, I'm sayin' it wrong," she said, noticing the look on Terra's face. One of the things you learn quickly as a bartender is how to read people. "Look, David can be dumb as shit sometimes. You gotta teach him what's what. See that's the problem, you need the right kind of carrot to move the jackass." "I don't know what you mean," Terra replied, smelling the food cooking. She was hoping this conversation would end soon so she could begin eating. "I don't know, maybe you haven't been with a lot of other guys before. Some guys like to be in charge, those are usually the guys who abuse shit. Wind up thinking they're running the person and not the relationship. Then there are some guys who like the girl to be in charge. Not, you know, like whips and chains and shit, but like her to make the first move. Those are usually the guys who don't get any action," Sofrito said, flipping the burgers and the bacon. "See then there's guys like David. He's not stupid enough to think he's runnin the girl, but he ain't smart enough to think he can run the relationship either. He's like playing halfway in and halfway out. If you want him, take him. Otherwise he's gonna wind up with some bitch who's just gonna take advantage of him. I'm not saying screw him, but if you're interested, hell, let him know," Sofrito said, reaching over and taking the burgers off the grill. "I'm not sure how I feel," Terra admitted. "Jes somethin' to keep in mind," Sofrito said, hearing the deep fryer ding. "Fries are done." "Thanks," Terra said, as she started to consider the advice Sofrito said slowly. "No problem babe. Here's lunch," Sofrito said, dropping the plate containing the burger and fries on the bar. "Hey I gotta take a smoke break, do me a favor, and watch the bar." "I, I don't know how to watch the bar," Terra said, as she took the plate of food. "It's easy. Just sit here, and yell if someone comes. Dunno where the hell Eric is, shoulda been here by now. Nobody comes this early, so just eat up," she said, grabbing her long cigarettes and heading towards the back door. With nothing else to do, Terra turned towards her dinner. Despite being famished, she enjoyed her burger slowly. It was one of the most delicious things she had ever eaten. Each bite had layer after layer of enough flavor that even the smallest of bites was enough to satisfy her. Even the garlic cheese fries were delectable, along with the ketchup along the side for dipping. Terra looked at the window, seeing two large men who…well they didn't look nice to her. They were looking at her and she couldn't help but catch their glance, before moving her head back. She wished to herself that they would simply go away. While she tried to ignore them, she couldn't help but see from the corner of her eye that they seemed intent on watching her. She looked down at the meal, taking another bite of her burger. There was still so much left, but she wanted to make sure she savored it. Just as Sergio had said before about eating bad food quickly, she wanted to eat good food slowly. Terra smiled; relieved as she saw the men leave from the window. That relief was eaten up as she heard the door creak open. She glanced at the bar's mirror and saw both men file in. They weren't especially large but they were larger than her. They wore bad clothes and were dirty, almost as much as she had been before her shower. "Hey there baby, howz about a good time?" one of them asked, scratching his beard. "N, no thank you," Terra said, trying to enjoy her burger. "Hey it's rude to ignore my friend like that," the shortest one said, smacking his hand on the table. "I, I wasn't ignoring him. Please, just, leave me alone," Terra said, trying to contain the fear in her voice. "Come on girlie, how about a good time huh?" The bearded one asked again. "You don't wanna say no ta me!" "P, please l, leave me ah, alone," Terra said, trying to hold her hand still. She was starting to get afraid. She looked at the back door, wishing that Sofrito or David would come. She wondered if she should yell, to get help. 'And get themselves hurt on account of me?' "Oh come on girlie, pretty thing like you shouldn't be eatin' lunch by herself," the bearded man said, showing his teeth as he grinned. Yellow and crusty with some missing, just a quick glance turned Terra's stomach and changed her appetite. Her eyes darted as she heard the door open, hoping that Nadia or Yoshi had come. Perhaps even David, or Sofrito to help. Or even just a stranger, someone to stop it. Her hopes were dashed when just a hooded figure came in. She couldn't even tell if he bothered to look at her predicament, as he went to the bar to sit down. "Girlie I wasn't askin', I was tellin', now git yerself ready for a good time," the bearded one said, rubbing his hands in glee. "I, I'm not looking for a good time, please, just, leave me alone," Terra said, nearly in tears. She didn't know what to tell these men, how to persuade these men, what to do to get rid of these men. "Don't you try ta tell him no!" the shorter one chimed in violently. "Dammit Eugene, don't butt in. Dis here is ma girl, I seen her first!" the bearded one argued. "I'm, I'm not y, your girl," Terra said, trying to be strong. "What did you say?" the bearded one asked, the smile quickly disappearing from his face. "Dammit girl, you sure done it now," Eugene said, "I'm not your girl!" Terra said with more force, trying to will the strength to make these two men leave. "You ingrateful bitch! I was gonna show you a good time too!" the bearded one said, curling his upper lip. "Fellas, how about you leave her alone?" The hooded man said, jumping over the bar and helping himself to a bottle of beer. "Who the fuck are you?" Eugene asked, looking at his bearded friend for help. "Shut the fuck up and mind your own fucking business!" the bearded man said bravely. "Hmm," the hooded figure said, opening his bottle and taking a long drink. "I guess the cliché thing would be to say I'm making it my business. Tell you what boys, how about you just grab a beer and leave her be?" the hooded figure said, taking two beers and placing them on the bar. "How about I just take the fucking beer and the girl?" the bearded man asked with a nasty look in his eye. "Why do you have to be that way?" the hooded man asked, jumping back from the bar and standing up near the two of them. "If you ain't noticed there's two of us and one of you, so ya better just scram Boy Scout before we teach ya a lesson!" he answered. "Okay," The hooded man said, quickly finishing his beer. He knew it was cliché to do so, but one works with what they have. Grasping the neck of the beer with his hand he quickly smashed it on Eugene's forehead, forcing the man to fall down in pain. Frightened Terra jumped behind the hooded man, hoping that he would protect her. Something about him seemed familiar. "Now that we got the odds evened out a bit, still want to teach me that lesson?" The hooded figure asked smugly. "He ain't out, Eugene, get yer ass up!" the bearded man shouted, kicking him. All eyes turned to the sound of a door opening. "Hey what the fuck is goin on out…son of a bitch!" Sofrito said, seeing the scene before her. She ran behind the bar and took out her double barreled sawed off shotgun and aimed it at the three men. "Whoa, let's take it easy here, we ain't lookin' for trouble," the bearded man said, holding his hands up. "Get the fuck out of my bar!" she shouted. "You heard the woman, get going," the hooded man said. "I ain't talking to him. Erraticus, what the fuck are ya doin in my bar kickin up shit?" Sofrito asked, pointing her gun at him. "Hey, I wasn't the one to start it, ask Terra," Erraticus said, taking his hood off. Terra nodded nervously. "Couple of shit kickin bums come into my bar? Should have known better than to leave a little girl in charge of shit. But you still owe me money from last time. And that beer," she said, leaning her shotgun towards the two vagrants, both of whom held their hands in the air as far as they could. "Fine," Erraticus said, fishing in the pockets of the bearded man. He looked through them quickly it and grabbed enough money to pay for what he owed, and then some. After all, working for a nearly defunct resistance group didn't pay as much as it used to. "And you two, get the fuck outta my bar. You try to even come in I gotta round big enough to turn yer guts ta fondue!" Sofrito said, pointing to the exit with the barrel of her gun. "Wait," Erraticus said, putting his hand in front of them, "Apologize to her." "S, sorry," the bearded one said. "Y, yeah, sorry," Eugene answered. "You know, if you try to scare a girl like that, she has friends. Good friends. The kind of friends that you don't ever get to see or stop before it's too late. The kind of friends who hide in the shadows and learn your habits. The kind of friends who make people disappear," Erraticus said, tapping both men directly on their foreheads. "So don't scare women." "Now get the fuck out of here," Sofrito said, watching the two of them dash out. "It's real brave to talk big like that when you've got a girl holding a gun on them Erraticus." "Well I thought it sounded pretty good," he answered. "Hey red, you okay?" she asked, looking at Terra. "Y, yeah. They didn't do anything. I'm fine, thanks to you two," Terra said, nodding nervously. "Well shit girl, eat your lunch before it gets cold. Them bums ain't coming back again. Chickenshits like that fuck everything up. If it wouldn't be such a mess I'd splat them against the wall, but fuck I don't wanna clean it," Sofrito said, returning her shotgun behind the bar. Terra looked as she heard the door behind the bar make noise once again, as David emerged. He looked, well, better. Much better actually. For the first time Terra saw him really clean shaven, with most of his acne cleaned. The grease was washed out of his hair, making it appear much nicer. And his clothes were different, he had changed into some nice black pants, and a white dress shirt, both of them actually clean. But maybe it was just that he looked happy now. She caught herself staring before anyone noticed, at least she hoped, and looked away. "Oh yeah," David said, walking out of the shower. "Finally feel civilized again." "Hey Terra, Sofrito, when did you get here Erraticus? I miss something?" David asked. "Shut up and eat yer burger. You ain't pretty but at least now you ain't gonna turn away business smelling like rotting shit anymore," the bartender said, dropping his plate on the bar. "Whew, feels good to be clean for real. What'd ya think about the burger?" David asked, sitting down for his own. "It's good," Terra said, returning to her own barstool. With David, Sofrito, and Erraticus nearby, the knot in her stomach seemed to unwind. She picked her burger up and started nibbling on it. Before long she was eating it with the same gusto, as she was caught up in the flavor and the rare opportunity for such a meal. With her friends, or at least the people that she knew, she felt safe. It was only when she was alone, and had to make do without help, that she felt scared. "What are the chances you could whip me up another one of those?" Erraticus asked, his mouth watering. "I don't know, how much did those two have?" she answered from behind the bar, grabbing her broom. "What two?" David could barely ask with his mouthful of burger. "Never mind," Erraticus said, checking his pocket. "I'll just have a couple shots of whiskey." "Make yourself useful and clean the glass," Sofrito said, tossing a hand broom and dustpan. "What glass?" David had the distinct feeling that he was missing something rather important. "David, just shut up and eat your lunch," Sofrito said. "Not hungry?" David said, almost finishing his burger. "Huh?" Terra asked, taking a bite somewhat defensively. "You're halfway done your burger, and I've already eaten mine," David said, laughing. His laughing turned to a long and high pitch whine. He coughed and wheezed violently from the bottom of his lungs. He could feel the ache in his chest but could do nothing but cough. Even attempts at trying to suppress the phlegmatic outbursts were a failure. The room stopped and watched him intently, making him feel worse. He hated being weak, but he hated being known as weak even more. With one loud final cough he coughed up a large and dirt coated piece of phlegm, surrounded by a pool of deep red blood. So much blood it seeped through his hand and onto the bar. He grabbed a napkin, wiping the large, marble sized phlegm off his hand and tried to soak up the blood. "David, shit, you ain't right," Sofrito said, watching the caked up blood on his napkin. As much of a ball buster as she was, she had a soft spot for her 'little brother'. "No shit," he said, spitting out more of the bloody expectorate. "Better get yer ass to church!" she warned him. "There's a church nearby?" Terra asked, her eyes lighting up. "Yeah, Amazonis has got the biggest Catholic Church on Mars, the Martian Cathedral. But that's not saying much. I've seen office buildings that looked nicer. Doesn't matter anyway, I've got no reason to pray," David said, taking a long drink of his beer. It cooled the harsh ache in the back of his throat. "Dumbass, the church's got the best hospital still working in the whole fucking district. You wanna get your ass patched up you're gonna do it with their help," Sofrito lectured. She never understood why people were so stupid at times. "Huh, maybe I should," David said, looking down at his fries. Something about coughing up blood just made dinner look unappealing. 'Must just be that my stomach shrank.' He thought to himself. Coughing up so much blood was painful enough, but the ringing in his ears from his mind splitting headache, thanks to the hairline fracture on his nose, made things all the worse. "Erraticus, want my fries?" David asked, holding them up. "Beggars can't be choosers, slide it over," he answered. He managed to make a couple bucks off of his earlier meeting, a few from those bums, and some free dinner. Not a bad day, all in all, and it was still early. Terra's head turned around as she heard the door open to her side. "There you are!" Terra said, smiling as she wiped some ketchup off of her face. She was happy to see Yoshi and Nadia finally return, with Sergio coming behind them. "Well, it's official, we can't afford a single place in the entire city to stay," Nadia said, sighing. "There's always abandoned warehouses, a lot of people live there," Erraticus said, sipping his drink. "Or the street." "Who lives like that?" Terra asked. The very notion seemed terrifying. "I've spent my fair share of time in a cardboard condo, there's worse ways of going," Erraticus had spent time in the street as well. Most importantly he had managed to avoid jail cells. "At least this jackass has the right idea. Vodka on the rocks," Sergio said, sitting down on the barstool. "Cost ya four," Sofrito said, reaching for a glass. "Ain't ya gonna introduce me?" Sofrito asked while smacking David on the arm. David grit his teeth, feeling the jarring sensation in his skull once again. "Oh uh yeah, everyone this is Sofrito, Sofrito, this is Yoshi, Nadia, and my captain Sergio," David said, covering the bloody napkin up under his arm. "That's the asshole captain?" Sofrito nodded her head in his direction. "Mmm hmm," David mumbled in agreement "Cost ya six," Sofrito said, filling the glass with vodka as she waited for Sergio to shell out the cash. "Son of a bitch, boy you're more trouble than you've ever been worth. If you couldn't work with computers I'd have dropped you off in space months ago," Sergio grumbled, reaching for his electronic payment card. "What about the rest of you?" Sofrito asked, waving her arm towards the various alcohol on her shelves. "No thanks, I don't feel like drinking," Nadia said, holding her hand up. "Too early for me," Yoshi added in, lying, as he didn't have any money. "Then what the hell are ya good for? Just 'cause you're a couple choice pieces of ass like you are good for business, this ain't a café. So buy somethin or leave!" Sofrito shouted. "Uh," Nadia said, not accustomed to being spoken to like that. "Terra, did you shower?" Yoshi asked, looking at the girl. She looked radiant, compared to himself and Nadia in the mirror. "Yes," Terra said, nodding, her clean and curly hair bouncing up and down. "Fuck David, did you bring a whole colony ship with you?" Sofrito asked miserably. "Aww come on Sof, let 'em shower. It can't be that bad, can it?" David asked. "Ugh, behind the bar, last door in the hallway. Doubt there's gonna be much hot water left," Sofrito said, waving her arm in the general direction. "Thanks," Nadia said, beating Yoshi to the door. "Hmph," Yoshi said, sitting down, changing his mind. "Hey Sergio, buy me a drink." "Buy your own drink, six bucks is a ripoff," Sergio grumbled. "It's only four for her," Sofrito answered. "If you promise not to talk again I'll buy you one and only one drink," Sergio said, flipping his electronic card again. Terra looked around the room, feeling a little self conscious that she was the only one not drinking. She continued to nibble on her fries, after having offered Yoshi some. Yoshi didn't seem to like them, as he said he hated garlic. She didn't see the problem, but they did have a slight burn in her mouth. She just waited patiently, until Nadia came out. "Thank you, Sofrito," Nadia said, smiling happily. "Hey you, you're turn. Goddamn it I'm not gonna have a drop of hot water tonight," Sofrito complained. Then again, she had showered the other day, it's not like she needed to. As Yoshi walked to the door, she smacked him in the ass with her dishtowel. She enjoyed watching the young Asian jump. "Nadia, there's a cathedral here," Terra said happily. "Oh, I didn't know. That's nice," Nadia nodded. "They, they've got a hospital. We should go there. I want to go there," Terra said hopefully. She was almost trembling from her adamancy. "Terra, I," Nadia said, watching the hope flash in the girl's eyes. she couldn't help but feel her heartstrings tug, and her stance softened. "Okay, we'll go to the cathedral when we can." "When we can? Why can't we go now? What else are we doing?" Terra could feel the hope rising in her young body. "I don't want to butt in, but I'm going to go there myself. It seems to be the only hospital open anymore to the poor. I might as well show you the way there," David said, finishing off his beer. He needed to get himself fixed up, and he knew he didn't have a lot of time to spare. Besides, he did like seeing Terra smile. "We might as well check it out. We'll go as soon as Yoshi's done," Nadia said, resting on one of the barstools. At least they were comfortable, with armrests and a padded back. If she didn't have to go somewhere she might have fallen asleep sitting there. * "Well, we've tested the sample for just about everything that we can Tom," Mambety said, tapping on the container of the sample in the electron microscope. "It's not magnetic, has a high atomic weight and density, is not conductive…we basically haven't figured out much," Capistrano said wearily. "We've learned quite a bit Capistrano, patience," Tom said, finally feeling better after the deleterious effects of his previous night of drinking. "I think that once we begin to examine it's atomic structure, we might begin to unravel things some," Michael Lennon said. "Right now I'm afraid we're going to have to spend most of the time studying the material. We went from virtually nothing to a week's worth of research in twelve hours. Boil the coffee, we're pullin' an all nighter, eh?" Samuel Stewart said, nudging Tom hard in his side. "I don't quite think so," Tom said, considering for a moment. "Well I think Tom's right. I'm afraid that we're running a bit short on time. For now, we're going to have to lock this up," Michael said, checking the clock. "But how can we possibly stop once we've found the Rosetta Stone of our research?" Rohan Gupta asked. "Well maybe that red dot on yer lady's head would tell you that we're likely to lose our heads if we even try," Sam Stewart said, smacking Rohan on the shoulder. "He does bring up a good point Tom, if we put this away, what guarantees do we have that it won't be tampered with?" Mambety asked. "None," Capistrano said, interrupting. He didn't expect the sample to be here, and didn't expect the sample to leave anytime soon. "We don't have any choice gentlemen. I'm afraid that we can either store the sample appropriately, or we can wait for the consequences of trying to hold onto it. Lose a sample or meet a firing squad. Not much of a choice, but I'm going to have to trust Smith this time to do the right thing. Call me a fool, but I don't think that Smith is going to play games with us, not this time," Tom said, ever the optimist. "You mean you're really trusting him?" Capistrano asked. "Yeah, this time, I think I am," Tom answered, wondering himself how he felt about that. And how crazy it seemed to say aloud. "We're making steps," Capistrano said, thinking before he added, "Let's make sure we don't walk too far right now." * "Wow," Terra said, looking upon the cathedral. It was enormous to her, the largest church she had ever seen, or to be accurate, the only church she had ever seen. "Beauty eh? Used to be real nice when they had stained glass. Sold them off or something I guess, maybe someone hit it with a rock. I don't know," David said, leading the way. "Who would buy stained glass?" Yoshi asked, annoyed for some reason at the notion. "Ever been to a cathedral this big before Terra?" David asked, ignoring Yoshi's comment. "No, I, I've never been to church before," she said, realizing how strange that sounded. She watched a group of kids kicking a ball in the adjacent field. One of them had his arm in a sling, another had an arm in a cast, while another walked with a limp. At first glance it seemed nice, but now, she wondered if she could ever have the strength to deal with what they were and be happy. "Really? Figured you'd have been baptized at least," David said, leading everyone into the open front doors. The inside looked less like a church than a temporary emergency room. The pews were full of people who seemed afflicted with some ailment or another. Mothers trying to hush the cries of children, old men coughing and wheezing. The room was bustling with the ill and those trying to console them. Terra identified a girl who seemed to be in charge, and walked up to her. "Uh, hello," Terra said to one girl, wearing what appeared to be hospital scrubs. "What is it?" she asked rudely, turning to Terra with a large pad. When Terra looked at her face, covered by a mask, she realized the girl was barely a teenager. "Uh, this, I mean, my friend David has got cancer, we, uh, want to know if there's anything that can be done for him," Terra said, trying to be as polite as she could. She had come to believe that she was asking for quite a bit. "Look, I'm going to be honest with you. Right now we don't have a doctor. The last doctor willing to help us out was mugged, and nearly beaten to death for his watch. Dr. Edgewise is a stubborn guy. Still has that watch. He's barely hanging on now," the girl said, checking over her shoulder. "Just my luck," David said, smiling at the irony of it. "I'm so sorry to hear that," Terra said. As she looked around she began to understand the melancholy mood of the room wasn't just the lamentation of the ill. It was the woe of those who feared they would never get better. "So I don't mean to be rude, but honestly, we can't do much of anything for your friend. But please don't lose your faith. Dr. Edgewise is a good man, and he may yet recover. I'm not even a real nurse but I know enough to get us by doing the small stuff. There are a few of us here, but we don't have training other than basic first aid, and a little bit more. If you want to rest yourself here feel free to. Again, I am sorry, god bless," the girl said sincerely, turning around. "She's a doctor," Terra said, lowly and carefully, pointing towards Nadia. "What?" the girl asked, spinning back. She seemed rejuvenated at the prospect of that hope. "I'm a medical doctor," Nadia hesitantly said, "With over a decade of experience in private practice." "A decade? You?" the girl asked. Nadia looked more like a busty first year med student than a doctor. "Yes, healthy living," Nadia hoped that explanation would suffice. "You, please wait here. Please. I'll be right back, please, just wait here," the girl said, waiting for one of them to nod before she ran as quickly as she could through a back door. "Terra, I wish you hadn't told her that," Nadia said, putting her hand on Terra's shoulder. "Why not? You are a doctor," Terra insisted, knowing it was the truth. "Now they're going to expect her to help," David said, pausing a moment to let it sink in. "You don't put your neck on the line for nothing." "No, it's not that," Nadia insisted. "It's that these people don't need a doctor, they need a platoon of them! I'm bound by my Hippocratic oath to help people, but I'm only one woman. And I have another reason to be here." "Here she comes," Yoshi said, happy to keep his doctoral degree hidden for the moment being. He had a feeling he would be dragged into this soon enough. "Excuse me, sorry," the girl said, out of breath. "Her Excellency has asked if you would grant her an audience." "Uh, yeah, right?" Terra said, looking around for any dissent. "Follow me, please," the girl said, walking briskly back towards the door. It tugged on Terra's heartstrings to see the sick children, even worse those without anyone to console her. "Just up these stairs," the girl said, leading them up some magnificent wooden stairs. The hallway was large and beautiful, but had no adornments. There were no pictures, statues, and vases, nothing of note that one would expect in a cathedral. "If you would be so kind as to remember your manners," the girl said cautiously, opening the door. "Your Excellency, these are the four I told you about. May I introduce you to her Excellence, servant of God, Pope Teralyn II," the girl said, bowing towards the figure sitting behind a desk. "Th, the pope?" Terra asked, kneeling immediately out of deferred respect. "A true believer is a rare and wonderful thing to behold in these times of trouble. But worship me not, for I am not the Lord, and you should save your love for Him," Teralyn said softly. The elderly woman arose, showing her long white dress, with a matching hat that hid her short white hair. "It's an honor," Terra said sincerely. "Please, rise up girl. What is your name?" Teralyn asked, standing from her desk. She walked over towards Terra and offered her hand. "Terra, Terra Byrne," she said, taking the pope's hand. "Well that's a beautiful name Terra Byrne, if I may say so. Please, put your bags down, and take a seat," Teralyn said, leading the girl towards a chair. She took Terra's flower and placed it on her desk. "The rest of you, please, sit down. I do dislike the formalities. Erica, if there is nothing more, would you mind returning to the Lord's work?" "Of course, Excellency," Erica said, leaving the room as quickly as she had run prior. "She truly is a blessing, with more energy than a child should have. Now, who else do I have the chance to speak to?" the pope asked. "I'm Nadia Bodarko," she said, taking her seat. "Mori Yoshi," he said ill manneredly. "Oh, uh, I'm David Tracy," he said, sitting with the rest of them. He wasn't a Catholic really, but he was awestruck by being in the presence of the Pope. "Well it is a pleasure to meet you all. David, Erica has told me that you are ill, I am sorry to hear this," she said, clasping her hands and nodding. "Uh, thank you miss, I mean your Excellency. Yes, I am sick, cancer," David decided to spare her the details. "I imagine she probably told you the situation with Dr. Edgewise. When she heard that miss Bodarko here was a doctor, well, bless the girl, she had thought our prayers answered. I'm afraid that she has spent a life of poverty, and when the church took her in…She wants more than what can be expected of people. She sees your coming as a blessing, and I'm afraid I must ask you the question that you all no doubt expect," the Pope said. "You are a doctor, Nadia, would you use your skills as a healer to help the people of Mars?" she asked slowly. "Before I accept anything, I'm afraid that I must tell you that we're in Amazonis for a reason. I cannot guarantee how long we're going to be here," Nadia didn't want to raise anyone's hopes up unnecessarily. "If you could offer a day's help, it would go a great way to helping us all. Not just physically but to help the morale of the people. They're looking for a miracle, even if it's just one woman, for one day," the Pope answered back. "I'm afraid that we don't have much to offer here in the way of compensation, but we do have medical equipment in excellent condition, if not a bit antiquated." Yoshi's stomach began to rumble loudly. It wasn't out of hunger, but more the liquor in his system. "If you are hungry, food is one of the few things we do have," she said, on response. "Yeah, that and treasure trove of jewels I'm sure," Yoshi mumbled, his voice full of doubt. "I'm sorry," she asked, turning her head slightly. "Oh come on, the Catholic Church? You must have enough money to buy a dozen doctors. What, don't want to break into the treasure vault to help people?" Yoshi had always had a lingering dislike for religion. And it wasn't every day that he got to voice his opinions to the pope. "Dude!" David said before he smacked Yoshi's shoulder. "That's the, uh, that's the freaking Pope man!" "It's quite alright, David. Miss Yoshi, I don't know what you expect me to do. Shall I jump atop my desk and scream 'Eek, a nonbeliever'?" Teralyn asked sarcastically. "While in the previous generations of the Catholic Church have had vast sums of money from their follower's donation, that is simply not the case here. The Cathedral was built by the government, and whatever gifts we have had were sold off some time ago. Most of the people of Mars, just as the people of Earth, no longer follow the way of our Lord. I have taken a vow to live a life of humility. What little money we have is used to purchase food and medicine for the people. So no Miss Yoshi, we have no treasure vault from which to buy any doctor." "A humble Pope? I'll believe it when I see it," Yoshi mumbled. "I don't get the impression that you're much of a believer Miss Yoshi, and I'm not in a position to prove it to you," Teralyn answered, turning to Nadia, "Now Miss Bodarko, to return to my question, would you help us?" "For as long as I'm here, I'm willing to help," Nadia said, hoping she wouldn't come to regret it. "I don't know much, but if I can help, I want to," Terra said, her voice full of commitment. "Fucking Hippocratic oath," Yoshi mumbled, sitting up in his chair, "Count me in too." "You're a doctor?" the pope asked. "Well the modeling gig wasn't pulling in enough money," Yoshi said sardonically. "I guess I'm just on the supply side of the sick people," David said morosely. "Very well, I thank you all. If I'm not being too forward, perhaps you'll agree to come tomorrow morning? Where do you live? I can send a car, if you would like," Teralyn offered. A vehicle was one of the few services that they had left which they could offer. "We don't…have anywhere, to spend the night," Terra said honestly. She felt compelled to confide in this woman. She was the Pope after all. "I see. Then you're welcome to spend your time while you visit Amazonis in the Cathedral. There are a few extra bedrooms here, we'd love to have you spend your time here. It isn't much, but it is safe. Consider room and board the least bit we can do for you," Teralyn hoped to hook them with it. "That's a very gracious offer," Nadia realized. Food and a bed were sometimes better than money. Right now she needed the bare essentials more than currency. "I'd love to," Terra said enthusiastically. She was starting to feel happy about the future again. "Beats the street," David said, nodding. "What other choice do we have?" Nadia asked. Yoshi, the only silent dissenter, nodded his head. He didn't have a better answer. "It's agreed then. We normally close the Cathedral's gates after eleven. The undesirables don't bother us, they know we've no money. They're more likely to come wanting food. We must limit what we can offer, but we do give freely. Still, there have sometimes been difficulties. Please, be in by then," Teralyn said, returning to her feet. "Thank you, we will be here," Terra said happily as she stood up. "Actually, if it's alright with you, I would like to inspect things if I may. Starting with Dr. Edgewise," Nadia said. Getting him in shape was her first priority, before helping David. Having another doctor would not only simplify her work, but would create a replacement for when she would have to leave. "I'll see you later then," David said, standing up. "David, no," Nadia said, deciding not to give him the option. "You are up first for surgery tomorrow. You will have plenty of time of your own to do what you want to do. For now I need your body clean and well rested." "You're not my mom, you know," he said, shaking his head slowly. "David, please, be reasonable. I need your body in perfect shape. I can't have you…indulging, not tonight. What you do in your own time is your business, but what you do under my care is mine. Missing one night out with the guys won't do you any harm," Nadia said, trying to reason with him. "You…you know what, fine. You're the doctor," David said, checking the time, one in the afternoon and nothing to do. Then again, sleeping all day did sound kind of nice. "I'll have Erica show you to your rooms, and show you around," the Pope said, looking at Terra. "You have great faith, not just in the Lord but in mankind," Teralyn said as she walked towards Terra, and hugged her. "Do not lose it." * "Well?" Smith asked, a bit annoyed as Adrian Brody poured him another drink. He had sent the sweeper team down almost an hour ago. He was almost drunk by now, and getting in an even worse mood. He didn't like being stuck at his desk this late. "It seems that their research has progressed as we might have expected. They've spent the day cataloguing the sample, and not much else. They've gotten a little farther ahead than estimated," reported the lead scientist of the team sent in to investigate Tom's group. He was thankful that there wasn't a video channel open as he worked in the lab. Something about the look on Josiah Smith's face scared him. "I suppose your new buddy isn't quite the super scientist that everyone makes him out to be. Want to take the sample back, like you planned?" Brody asked, ever the mischievous one. One of his games that he enjoyed was to give people information, but not with enough time to analyze it. Or give them information too late for it to help. "Well, what the hell. I told him I'd give him a sample, just not how long I'd give it to him," Smith said, taking another long pull from his drink. "What about the audio?" "There isn't much that we didn't expect sir, but uh," the scientist said cautiously. "What?" Smith was seriously considering doing something terrible to the man at the moment. "Well sir, as you requested, if any of them talk about you, you uh, wanted to hear it," the scientist answered nervously. "And?" Smith asked, impatiently tapping his glass against his desk. "I'm relaying it to you right now sir," the scientists said, as he transferred the audio files to Smith's office instantly. Of course Brody could have done it himself, but the scientist knew that it was better to look competent. The voice of Tom's earlier conversation filled the room where Brody and Smith sat. "…but I'm going to have to trust Smith this time to do the right thing. Call me a fool, but I don't think that Smith is going to play games with us, not this time," Tom said, ever the optimist." "You mean you're really trusting him?" "Yeah, this time, I think I am," "Holy…he actually trusts me? I didn't think he was lying, but this…?" Josiah said, tapping his drink against the desk once more. "Thank you, begin cleaning the room of all of the materials, leave nothing," Brody said, about to close the audio channel. "Wait!" Smith said, rubbing his tongue around his mouth. "The son of a bitch actually trusts me. Put everything back the way it was." "Yes sir," the scientist said, retracing every step he had taken to leave the room the same way he had found it. He knew what his job was, and knew it wasn't asking questions. * Nadia leaned back on the bed. Or beds would perhaps be more accurate. As the cathedral was short on beds, Terra and Nadia had volunteered to share a room, and had simply pushed the two beds together. She was just thankful for a comfortable bed, and most importantly, a TV! Sure, it wasn't three dimensional holographic high definition, and it was only forty eight inches, but at this point Nadia would have settled for the first TV back in the archives at the Smithsonian. She didn't even care that there was nothing of any worth on, she just wanted to vegetate, and had, for the last two hours, ever since she had finished dinner. Mars TV sucked and was so obviously biased, but it was TV. The cathedral had a large medical facility, full of equipment that was old, but could still be operated. With the latest medical advances, most people assumed that it made doctor's lives easier, and that was true to some degree. The technology was designed to make diagnosing illnesses less detective work and let the medical professionals do their job. But in instances like this, where there were too many patients, and old equipment, this was where her eight years of med school came to work. She could have operated with a butter knife and rags if she had to. She had started school when she was young, a prodigy as they called her. But they didn't make it easy for her, far from it. They wanted perfection, even more so than the other students. And she gave it, even with a baby of her own to come to. Her father would never have allowed anything else. And her mother was there to protect and help her, every step of the way, from childbirth to graduation. She sighed, thinking back to her mother for a moment. "Terra!" Nadia said in surprise as the redhead jumped on the bed next to her, jarring her from her momentary daydream. "You smell nice," Terra said, flashing a smile. "Thanks, a long shower will do that," Nadia smiled at Terra. "I almost forgot what smelling nice was like," Terra said, kissing Nadia on the cheek. "You're in a good mood," Nadia said, setting the remote down. "I am. I'm starting to think that maybe, maybe we're meant to do this. Maybe there is a fate, and we're living out ours. Maybe this is the way things were supposed to go. About everything. We were tested, and we passed. David's become sick, and he finds you, a doctor who can help him. Then on our second day here, we find a place where you can help him. It's all coming together," Terra said, stretching her body out on the bed. "Well that's just one thing Terra, we still have a more important reason to be here," Nadia reminded her. "I know, but still, we are helping people," Terra nuzzled her head against the pillow. "We?" Nadia didn't quite know how to explain it to Terra the difficulties involved with surgery. "I'm going to help you tomorrow," Terra said definitively. "I helped you before. I know I can't do much. But I can learn stuff. I already know how to clean out a cut from having an infection, and how to bandage it. I can do the little things, and you and Yoshi can do the big things. Even if I just hand you the right tools or take people's names, it's going to help." "You're really looking forward to this, aren't you?" Nadia asked, turning her body towards Terra's, as she cradled her head in her hand. "I know it's not much compared to yours, but my whole life, I felt like I couldn't do anything right. Well now, I feel like I can. Don't you feel great helping people out?" Terra asked, jubilantly. "Yes Terra, it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever felt, short of raising my children," Nadia nodded. "But please, keep in mind, there is something bad about it." "What could be bad about it Nadia? We're going to help people!" Terra smiled, kissing Nadia again. "The people you can't help Terra," Nadia said cautiously. "Just, stay with the kids scratching their knees and breaking their arms. Leave the more serious stuff to Yoshi and I." "You're the boss. Uh, doctor," Terra said smiling as she played with Nadia's hair. "Say doctor, you want to play…uh, doctor?" "You're frisky tonight too," Nadia chuckled. "It's not my fault, I'm just happy. Bad things are going away, and we're doing good things. We don't have to worry so much about being in space anymore too. And soon we're going to find out how to save mom," Terra really was feeling good. "Besides, it's you're fault. You look so pretty now." "You think you can keep it down?" Nadia asked, wrapping her arms around her bedmate. "Keep it…down?" Terra asked quizzically, raising an eyebrow. "I mean be quiet. We're in a cathedral, you know. I don't want the Pope bursting in thinking we're talking in tongues," Nadia chuckled. "Not funny," Terra shook her head, with a stern look on her face. "Okay, okay, give me a break. It's nice to see you smile like that," Nadia said, kissing Terra on the lips. She was a beautiful girl, but when she was happy, it seemed like the world brightened up near her, and her inner beauty came through. Nadia took a deep breath, and reached her hands back, slowly unzipping the summery dress Terra had been wearing. As her tongue explored the wet crevasses of the redhead's mouth, Nadia's hands explored the smooth curves of her back. Terra was happy, and horny. She hadn't had sex in a while, having cursed the five days of her period, made all the worse by it being in sync with Nadia's. But now she intended to make up for lost time. Jumping up off the bed she confused Nadia for a moment, before letting gravity do its job, and drag the dress down onto the floor. Nadia admired Terra for a moment, standing there in a matching set of white underwear. Perhaps even more admirable was that they were clean, except for a wet spot forming in Terra's panties. Not that they were on for long, as Terra managed to free her already growing shaft from it's cloth prison. Nadia had surgery in the morning, and knew that their chance for foreplay would be limited. She managed to shimmy out of her pants and boxer briefs, kicking them off the bed eagerly. She had barely begun taking her shirt off when Terra pounced upon her, kissing her deeply on the mouth. Terra wanted it badly, her hands cupping and feeling the fullness of Nadia's breasts through the shirt. She closed her eyes, letting her hands do the walking. With remarkable ease Terra flicked the buttons of Nadia's shirt off. Reaching behind her back, Terra was able to pop off Nadia's bra in almost no time. The redhead opened her eyes, smiling at her little achievement. She was more interested in the results, as she peeled the bra from Nadia's breasts, exposing the massive mammaries. Terra opened her mouth, taking in one of her lover's nipples in her mouth. The firm pink nubs were already getting hard, and Terra's oral manipulations only served to further the growing feeling of arousal in the pushed together beds. Nadia reached her hands down, feeling the soft curves of Terra's backside. Her hands slid inward, reaching down towards the growing patch of heat. She felt Terra coo on her breast as her fingers glided across Terra's snatch, covering her hands in the dew of Terra's desire. Both of her sexes were aching. She too, had gone a long time without stimulation. Terra decided to take action. She was as much a giver as she was a taker. And giving oral sex was one of her favorite ways to do both. Unlatching herself from Nadia's breast, her head slowly slinked downward, driving Nadia wild with her hot and steamy breaths. Nadia grasped upon her nipples, eagerly anticipating what was to come. Terra wrapped her hands around Nadia's growing shaft, feeling the blood engorge the organ. It was warm to the touch, and already dripping precum. Terra's tongue lashed out, licking the drops from the sensitive head of Nadia's cock, giggling at the groan from her lover. She dropped her head lower, breathing in deeply from the fount of Nadia's sex. The smell was sexually intoxicating, watering Terra's mouth all that much more. Terra's tongue poked out, taking a taste of Nadia. Finally, after so much bathing, all that Terra could taste was…Nadia, and the perfume of her sex. There was no longer dirt or sweat, just the sweet and pungent flavor of Nadia's growing juices. Stopping short, Terra lifted her body up, looking at the beautiful naked body before her. She took a moment to breathe it in before grasping her own fully hard shaft. "Awww, cutting it short tonight?" Nadia asked. "I, I don't think you'll be complaining tonight," Terra said, knowing that they were pressed for time. It was late after all, and they had an early day. Pressing her throbbing cock head to the dainty lips of Nadia's pussy, Terra could feel the heat pouring off of her soaked snatch. She plunged her shaft forward, feeling it become enveloped by the soft folds of Nadia's womanhood. Both women groaned slightly, trying to keep silent the feedback of their lust. Terra loved the feeling of Nadia's pussy. The soft and velvety smooth walls were ever so tight, but with enough gumption and pussy juice Terra was always able to manage herself in. The first few inches were always the most difficult, but they were the most pleasurable. It always felt like a first time, a new time where she could fulfill her lover with her own unbridled passion. Nadia groaned, still pawing at her nipples. She closed her eyes, imagining how much Terra had filled her. While Terra had fourteen inches, Nadia had always managed to take every inch with a smile. More than a smile, in fact, Nadia had loved being filled as far as she could. Thanks to the nanobots it never hurt, and the satisfied feeling was almost indescribable. Every inch of her pussy was on fire, her entire body was overcome with lust, and her mind was focused only on the pleasure given, and the pleasure received. Nadia's eyes thrust open as she felt Terra's hips press against her own. She arched her back, reveling in that oh so familiar sensation of being fulfilled. Terra didn't hesitate for a moment, taking a familiar pace. They weren't in that much of a rush. She knew that she could never hold herself off from cumming long. Terra leaned down, taking Nadia's breast, the one she hadn't yet tasted, into her mouth. She just loved the feel of her beautiful skin, of a slightly darker tone than her pale white. The soft vastness of Nadia's breasts were contrasted by the small hardness of her nipples, which Terra suckled with great vigor. Nadia groaned, her aching shaft was pressed tight between her body and Terra's, bearing the brunt of their dry humping. With Terra's body there she couldn't stroke the shaft, but Terra's deep thrusts were so incredibly arousing that Nadia couldn't tell how much longer she could go. Terra grunted, feeling that tingle throughout her body. She was close to cumming, and she didn't want to disappoint. She continued sucking from Nadia's breasts, coating them with her saliva. As if reading Nadia's mind her hand wrapped itself around Nadia's cock, stroking it in rhythm with her own. As her thrusts became quicker and her strokes became faster, accelerating to a feverous pace. Terra' mouth opened agape as she breathlessly announced her orgasm. Her body shuddered, as her mind was blown asunder with pleasure. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head as she continued plunging herself forward into Nadia's tight and wet pussy, depositing load after thick load of her cum, filling her lover up. Terra nearly collapsed onto Nadia's breasts. Her hips continued to push forward by reflex, prolonging the waves of pleasure that rocked her. Nadia's body flew forward as she came. She spasmed powerfully, her body buckling and shaking. Terra's filled her in an instant, coating the inside of her pussy with her hot and thick semen. Nadia's own cock spurted forth, ejecting frothy blasts of semen over her chest and breasts. She was coated with cum inside and out, and everything in between was an explosion of pleasure as she came hard. Terra collapsed on top of her lover as her orgasm eased, coming into contact with Nadia's cum. Running her finger between the two she collected a dollop of semen and quickly brought it to her mouth for a taste. Nadia watched, never quite understanding the girl's fascination or appreciation of ejaculation. She was ready to go to get some sleep, any experience with Terra was a draining one. But Terra wasn't prepared to sleep, not yet. She climbed her body on top of Nadia's, watching with some amusement the exhausted look on her face. Terra smiled, a few drops of cum still lingering on her lips. She grasped onto Nadia's still hard shaft, pointing it upwards like a flagpole. With one smooth motion she impaled herself, dropping her whole body weight onto Nadia's lap. Nadia groaned, the sudden shift of weight was an uncomfortable surprise. Only an inch spared her the pain of landing directly on her sensitive balls. All of the amazement abated as she felt the warm tightness of Terra's womanhood begin to move on top of her. "Oh," Nadia groaned, trying to keep her voice down. Terra had never been so forceful with her lovemaking. Nadia knew not whether it was a symbol of trust or lust. Her mind was too focused on the amazing sensations as Terra rode her like a cowgirl, bucking up and down on her cock. Terra's body bounced up and down, her breasts undulated in a smooth and steady motion. Her cock, still hard, flapped up and down, thin lines of precum dripping forth and creating gossamer lines of fluid which would attach onto her stomach with each bounce. Terra had barely gotten over her previous orgasm, and yet she was ready for the next. Her head bobbed up and down with her body, feeling Nadia fill her up entirely. She reveled in the sensation, so satisfying even if it were almost too much. She noticed Nadia looking at her, at her body, at her face, her smile, and she smiled back, looking down upon Nadia's gorgeous frame. Leaning in slowly, Terra kissed Nadia on the lips, as she continued to ride her. The women kissed passionately, their tongues almost as active as Nadia's cock, plunging in and out of Terra's skinny pale body as fast as she could work it. Terra's hands cupped Nadia's breasts, still coated in a thick layer of her quickly drying semen. She massaged the globes, feeling the heightened tips between her fingers. Terra didn't have the only hands that would roam. While Terra continued to pound her unabatedly, Nadia reached around, grasped upon Terra's quickly moving backside with one hand, and helped the redhead expedite her constant thrusting motion. With her free hand she reached down, accidentally coating her hand in her own semen. Rather than wipe it off she decided to use it, and she slathered Terra's bouncing cock, up near her breasts, and stroked her off as quickly as she could. Terra closed her lips, moaning silently. She was nearly there once again. But she wanted to hold off. She wanted to time it right as Nadia fired her load off into her. She bit her lip, trying to hold off. Nadia's slippery hand was too fast, felt too good. She didn't know if she could hold off, not for much longer. Thankfully she needn't have worried. Nadia felt her body explode with orgasmic fury as her body was torn asunder from her orgasm. She trembled and shook, quivering in Terra's hot embrace. She could feel her cock and pussy spasm in unison, her mind erupting in orgasmic delight. More and more semen poured into Terra, filling her up in only a moment. but Nadia went on, her carnal desire for lust knew no bounds as she did whatever she could to satisfy her orgasm. As if on cue Terra followed Nadia's lead. She almost lost consciousness as she felt the pleasure in her body rise to an almost inhuman level. Her body writhed, shaking uncontrollably. She could feel the hot sticky blasts of cum filling her pussy. Triggering her own pleasure, Terra's pussy clamped down upon the welcome intruder, milking every drop of cum that she could. All the while Terra could feel the spurts of cum explode out of her own cock thanks to Nadia's absentminded handjob. The two women, satisfied, collapsed side by side on the bed. Terra smiled at the spots of cum covering Nadia. She was too tired to clean her off. Lying on her side she hugged her lover, knowing that before long they would pass out. Thinking ahead, Nadia managed to drag the blanket over their bodies, and turning the light off she kissed Terra. 'Maybe Mars isn't that bad after all,' Nadia thought.
