Below is the original announcement for the Sapphic Erotica Festival. You can find the FAQs on another page.

Sapphic Erotica Festival 2002

In honor of the birthday of Sapphos of Lesbos, the famous Greek lyric poet, Saturday September 7 has been chosen as the date for the first Sapphic Erotica Festival.

The theme of the Sapphic Erotica Festival is, obviously, lesbian erotica. Festival guidelines are contained in a following section. Stories are required to be lesbian erotica and need to fit into one of the four festival categories. These are not very restrictive. There is no evaluation of the stories except for the minimal moderation used on ass.m so it is up to each author to ensure that his or her story fits the spirit of the Festival.

Participation

There are four story categories and an author can participate in any or all of them.

Stories can be submitted now or anytime up until September 6 at 11:59 PM. The sooner, the better since they will all have to be moderated. On September 7, the festival stories will be released ahead of anything else that is supposed to show up on ass.m that day. I suspect it will take many hours for all the stories to show up and possibly more in some parts of the world. The normal method used is to release three stories per hour, according to whatever arcane formula the ass.m moderation software uses for determining order.

Story Guidelines

There are four categories for writers. These categories provide some scope and guidance for authors who want to be inspired, yet hopefully aren't too restrictive so that everyone who wishes to participate can do so.

Authors are free to be in any or all of the festival categories and I hope we see multiple participation from everyone who has the time.

This is a Sapphic Festival and so the stories should be ones that would fairly qualify for a lesbian code in the subject line (e.g. FF, ff, Ff, FF+, etc.). The rest of the content depends on which festival category a story is going to placed in by the author and the type of story the author wrote.

Here are the details for each category:

  1. Sapphic Poetry

Sappho was known for her lyric poetry about the love between women, so what better way to celebrate? Poems in this category don't have to be in Sappho's style, and they can be about any lesbian subject.

  2. The Muses

The ancient Greeks believed that the muses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, inspired them in their efforts in the arts. The nine muses were:

    1. Calliope - epic poetry
    2. Clio - history
    3. Euterpe - lyric poetry (flute)
    4. Melpomene - tragedy
    5. Terpsichore - choral songs and the dance
    6. Erato - love poetry (lyre)
    7. Polyhymnia - sacred poetry
    8. Urania - astronomy
    9. Thalia - comedy

For this category, write a story that involves one or more of the muses. It can be set in ancient times, but doesn't have to be (you could write a story about a modern artist who is 'inspired' by one of the muses, for example).

  3. Last Line Challenge

Stories in this category should be 2500 words or less. In addition, the story must end with one of the following lines:

    1. "I still don't know what I'm going to do with her bra"; or
    2. "Now every time I pass by that statue, I remember her and that unforgettable night we shared together."

  4. First Time

A woman's first time with another woman is always memorable. Stories in this category can be on any theme or subject and of any length, the only restriction being that for at least one of the females in the story it must be her first time with another female.

Repost stories are acceptable in any category as "Sapphic Classics." To interest those who may have already read your classic tale, you should include a short essay giving the background of how the story (or poem) came to be written.

Submitting Stories to ASSM (alt.sex.stories.moderated)

Stories can be submitted to ass.m as of now (see http://assm.asstr.org/assm/faq.html for how if you're not familiar with the submission process). There are a few things to take into consideration before doing this.

Stories should follow the posting rules for ass.m I will not go into this since most already know how to do it. If there are any questions contact me at [email protected] and I'll try to help out.

The subject line of the post requires [sapphic] at the beginning so the moderators at ass.m can identify the story as being part of the festival. Make sure to include the opening and closing brackets. The moderators will then hold the stories until the festival date. Rey del Sexo will send a memo to the moderators letting them know about this.

(And hey, since Rey and the gang are always such good sports about supporting these kind of things, you might want to put a 'please donate to ASSTR plug' at the beginning or end of your story. The URL is http://www.asstr.org/donations.html )

If a person does not want his or her story to be posted on the Festival Web Site, make sure to read the section on ASSTR Web Site before submitting a story.

Festival Website on ASSTR

There is a website for stories submitted to the Festival at http://www.asstr.org/~sapphic/ . If you do not want your story to be part of the Festival Website, just mention in the story post prior to the start of the story. Otherwise the story will be included in the permanent record for this event.

The Website will also contain this announcement, as well as any updates and FAQs that come up prior to the day of the festival.
