Recent Updates: top
2003-07-24
The new domain name has been bought and a hosting server is being
selected. Database updates (barring a bulk update) and all other changes
will be non-existent until the new server comes online and the programs
are moved to it. In older news, a semi-reliable statistic of 1 email per
1000 page hits has been computed (see Automatic Emails for Authors for
details).
2003-07-08 Tesseract's changes have been made, 200 more bulk additions have been processed, and the database has been updated.
2003-06-26 Tesseract has provided some valuable input on reformatting the Search Results page. No real expected completion date, but it is on the list. Thank you Tesseract! Also, thanks go to the person making the Bulk Additions of the 30 Anoninsac stories on 6/16.
2003-06-15 Okay, so it is just my frustration, the actual number so far is 2,443 Searches per Review being submitted. Which still seems abysmal as that equates to one new review every 10 days or so. Don't you want others to hear your voice? Squick criteria is still on the agenda, current lack of time is the issue.
2003-06-01 Thanks go out to the person who sent the Bulk Additions on May 26th. About 100 entries of the authors Uther_Pendragon, arrowchild, and eskimo1958. The more the merrier and many thanks, Lix.
2003-05-21 Database updated, yeah. I'll crack open a mySQL manual and see if I can get the mods done now.
2003-05-20 Volunteer projects, what can you say? Lack of time on my part has delayed the Database updates and modifications. Currently there are 8 entries needed to be updated to the database; best guess is Wednesday or Thursday. Modifications are on hold for a bit, any Review that uses the missing codes will be saved and processed when the mods are done. Daily reviews are't going to happen in the short term either. *sigh*
2003-05-06
Database still needs to be fixed for X-Men and Zoo, so far no one has
entered one of those codes, so my lack of time to get to it doesn't seem
to be an issue :) I'm also toying with the idea of publishing to ASSTR
daily reviews/summaries, same format as the Weekly Reviews, in a static
location.
Overview: top
Help people find the works they are looking for.
After reading the multitude of Story Code flame wars and hearing the pitiful cries of readers that they didnt have a way to find stories that met their reading criteria, I decided to build something that might solve both. And so I started, and then it grew, and grew, and grew. And its not even close to stopping its growth (i.e. scope creep). The overriding thought for this system is that it is "self-healing" and allows people to share their opinion on stories they read or write. The current thought is this system will merge with the ASSTR shs-header and review systems that are being planned. This system is currently slightly broader scoped than the ASSTR systems, we allow non-ASSTR sites to participate (see the AUP at the bottom of this page), but that probably won't be an issue.
The system currently:
The Search and Review system was designed to rate (and later modified to email comments to authors) singular webpages. Which in general meant that each chapter of a story got its own entry. I have also now noticed that some entries are pointing to a webpage that contains a summary (table of contents, author comments, etc.) for that specific story. Either usage is fine.
The best results in getting comments to authors has been by making it as easy as possible for the reader to find and click the Review Button. With that in mind, there seems to be a sliding scale on where and how many Review Buttons to use.
To gather the most absolute number of comments, put a Button at the top and bottom of each individual chapter and a Button next to each story link on the rest of the site. Another method is to place a single Button at the end of each chapter. And another way is to place a single Button on the summary or table of contents page for the story.
-- Statistics, Thoughts, and # Emails per Page Hits --
It seems there is approximately 1 fan email per 1000 page hits, with the caveat that this seems to only be valid for brand new stories.
The data being collected isn't that conducive to extensive analysis, but a pattern of existing (and older) stories getting zero (or one) fan emails seems to be emerging. This may be because new stories are getting 5 to 10 times the number of page hits than older stories. Also, there does seem to be an ASSD effect (i.e. if the story is talked about in ASSD the number of hits and fan comments goes up), which might say something about the number of lurkers in ASSD?
-- For Archivists and Collectors --
Within the guidelines above, placing a Rate and Review Button on the
stories you are hosting for others is great. Please do get their
permission first and tell them that you are creating Buttons for them.
That way they will not be startled to start receiving emailed comments
from a bogus email address. (The email they receive is from @dev.nul and
has an appended comment about where it actually comes from.)
Bulk Additions: top
Someone a week or two back added a couple hundred stories through the
standard add a Review form (Review a Story) And while I heartily thank them, and
did so in ASSD, I can only think that their mouse finger has got to hurt!
So, in the vein of trying to not be blamed for someone's carpal tunnel,
I've made it much easier to add large numbers of stories all at once.
If you will put "bulk" submissions in the below format and paste it into my Email Kluge, I'll go manually process it, so your click finger doesn't fall off :)
Author Name
URL,Title,code,code,code
URL,Title,code,code,code
URL,Title,code,code,code
. . .
Example:
Anais Ninja
http://www.asstr.org/files/Authors/anais_ninja/wander/wander10.txt,Wanderings
Ten - Homecoming,F8f,m8f,M8f,F8mm,inc
http://www.asstr.org/files/Authors/anais_ninja/wander/wander11.txt,Wanderings
Eleven - Babes in Toyland,FF8ff,inc,ws
http://www.asstr.org/files/Authors/anais_ninja/wander/wander12.txt,Wanderings
Twelve - Insatiable,M8f,F8f,F8m,inc,gang
Please use either MF, M/F, or M8F notation for singles and F+/m+, FF/mm, FF8mm for multies. Or just try to keep the codes as close to the recognized code list as possible. If nothing else, try to be consistent with however you are coding, so I can use global search and replace for corrections. (for example, stick with one of: Best, Beast, Bestial, or Bestiality)
Codes are here: http://lixdw1192.tripod.com/codes.txt
Email Kluge is here: http://lixdw1192.tripod.com/emaillix.html
And thank you to the people that have already added large groups of
stories.
Self-Healing: top
This system will become "self-healing" over time, at least from the
standpoint of statistics. Eventually stories will receive enough reviews
so that any "mistakes" in story codes will become outliers and thereby
these mistakes will be easy for the human searcher to ignore. Further
additions to Search formats will allow the selection of "cut-off" points
to programmatically exclude outliers in Search results.
The second thing is this has to be a living breathing document and system
that is self-healing. It is a large collection of data that no one will
ever have the time to go into to correct if "codes" are deleted or
changed. So, deleting and changing things is out, if individual elements
are no longer used, no problem, no one codes for it, no one searches on
it, so everyone can just ignore it. It disappears from non-use.
Tripod Pop Up/Under Warning: top
Either Tripod has recently added Pop Ups and Pop Unders or I've had Pop
Ups in Opera turned off for months. I'm not sure which it is, but I
don't remember Tripod having Pops in late December 2002 when I setup the
Tripod account to run the Search and Review system. If your browser
allows you to turn them off, my suggestion it to do it prior to clicking
on any link going to Tripod.
I'm open to suggestions to a less intrusive hosting service that fits the
requirements of free, allows Perl CGI, anonymous account creation, and
will work through a proxy. (Also, it would be nice it if had mySQL
capabilities.) Drop me a note with their name and I'll see if they will
work.

Review Archives: top
For the full list of all prior archives search in the ASSD newsgroup for
the subject "{ASSD} Weekly ACRRS story review submissions." Archival
postings to ASSD ceased on 24 May 2003, as mostly I don't have the time
to manually post them in two places. Once the Search and Review system
is moved off of Tripod, an automated mechanism will be built for ASSD
posts. The continuing, manual, archive on ASSTR is here:
