This was a tricky story to write (and read) but I wanted to try something different. If you are a little confused, try wiggling your mouse around. If you are on a phone instead of a computer, I have no idea what will happen and it may be that nothing works. Make sure to have JavaScript enabled or this is going to be very boring for you.

I feel like I was an orphan all of my life although I was not placed with the orphanage until I was four. I do not remember anything about my real parents but being abandoned by them made me feel pretty bad for years and years. That all changed yesterday. That was when I met Ms. Lupin, who has become my new mom. And it all started when Miss Abby came to get me.

"Monica? Can you take a break for a minute?" a sweet voice called from across the room. Half of the children in the game room looked over in mild curiosity. There were about 20 children in the large room today, a random mix of ages, races, and genders. The only thing we all had in common was that we were all orphans. It was unusual for us to be interrupted during our free time and some of them thought it might mean that a family was visiting. The orphanage worker, Miss Abby, was alone in the doorway though, so the other kids returned to their activities.

I looked up when my name was called. I was sitting at a small table in the middle of the room, playing checkers. My opponent, Kelly, was not really challenging me, but after all Kelly was only six years old while I was getting close to thirteen. I had kind of become like Kelly`s big sister and the two of us played together a lot when we were not at school. I had just jumped over three of Kelly`s pieces and cleared them from the board. Kelly was glaring daggers at her remaining pieces for not defending the others. I thought a short break would be a great way to give the younger girl time to think out her next moves, and avoid the possibility of a tantrum.

I stood up, grinning as I watched Kelly`s brow furrow in concentration. The poor girl never would accept that she could never beat me. I bent down and tapped one of Kelly`s pieces in a hint of what to do next. The little girl looked up at me suspiciously and I smiled wider as I turned away from the table. "Back in a bit, okay?"

A sullen acknowledgment followed me as I threaded through the small groups of kids to exit the game room. Miss Abby smiled at me as she closed the door behind us to dampen the noise. Miss Abby was a blonde in her early twenties, one of the youngest staff members, and always had a smile for us kids. Today she was dressed simply in jeans and a t-shirt, her outfit of choice on the days when there were no family visits scheduled.

"What`s up?" I asked as Miss Abby began leading me away from the game room.

"The director wants to talk to you," she answered pleasantly, as if there was nothing unusual about it. The director rarely spoke with an orphan one-on-one unless it was during a family visit, but that did not seem to be what was happening today. I tried to get more information but Miss Abby brushed off the questions and said that she did not know anything else.

Outside the director`s office I sat down at an old computer. Miss Abby said I had to fill out a form to log that I had been to see the director. The first few blanks were all basic, for putting in my name, the date, and the time. The questions kept going, though, and it seemed like overkill if this really was a quick visit, but I kept working through it all. Miss Abby stood next to the computer patiently while I finished typing everything out. After that, I stood up and Miss Abby knocked on the door to the director`s office. Someone called out for us to come in so Miss Abby pushed the door open and led the way.

The inside of the office was large, with a desk butted up to one wall and a separate area for casual conversations with families. When Miss Abby and I walked in, there were two women sitting in the casual area. A lady I did not know was sitting on a leather couch and the director was facing her across the coffee table, sitting in one of the two large armchairs. Miss Abby took a seat in the other armchair and made a little gesture for me to sit next to the woman on the couch. The woman was dressed professionally in a blue blouse and black pencil skirt while the director wore a pantsuit. A little awkwardly, I sat down next to the woman, unsure where I should direct my attention.

"Thanks for coming, Monica," the director smiled at me kindly. She uncrossed her arms and rapped her fingers idly across her armrest. "This is Celia Lupin. She is thinking about adopting you."

My eyes lit up when I heard that. I could not believe that after all these years in the orphanage I might finally get adopted. A big smile pulled at my lips and I did not even try to hide it. I turned on the couch to get a second look at Ms. Lupin and she smiled back at me. We clicked right away and I scooted closer to her on the couch. She wrapped an arm around my shoulders and gave me a little squeeze of support, like she understood how hopeful I was and wanted everything to work out too.

We all talked for probably more than an hour about all the stuff that Ms. Lupin would have to do to adopt me. I felt a little bad for leaving Kelly in the game room but I was having too much fun talking with Ms. Lupin to think about Kelly much. The whole time Ms. Lupin kept her arm around me and it made me feel really safe, like she was already my mom. I got more and more excited because Ms. Lupin seemed like she wanted me a lot even though we had just met. It also felt good being the center of attention for once, instead of just another orphan in the orphanage.

"I think we`re all set," the director said, finally ending the conversation. We all looked at her as she checked something off on a clipboard I had not even seen her take out. She looked up at me with a smile and added, "Monica, are you ready for Ms. Lupin to officially be your mom?"

"Yeah!" I was happy and nervous and I could not believe it was all happening so fast. I could barely sit still anymore but I did not want to do anything that might make Ms. Lupin change her mind.

Miss Abby took me back outside the office again so Ms. Lupin and the director could fill out the paperwork. I had to fill out some stuff too now that I would be leaving the orphanage. Miss Abby pulled up a different form on the computer outside of the director`s office and waited while I filled it out. There was a lot more to type this time because it would be my last day doing any of this. I felt so drained when it was all done because the adrenaline from the surprise was wearing off and I was shocked that my life was changing so quickly.

When I finished, Miss Abby took me to a small room next door to the director`s office. There were racks and shelves with a bunch of different clothes. Miss Abby told me I could not wear my orphanage clothes anymore, since I was going home with Ms. Lupin. So she helped me pick out a pretty dress to wear until Ms. Lupin could buy me some more clothes. The thought of having clothes and toys of my own got me all happy all over again.

After I had changed into the dress, Miss Abby and I went back to the director`s office, where she was standing in the doorway finishing up with Ms. Lupin. Miss Abby gave me a little push and I walked forward to stand next to my new mom. I hugged Miss Abby and even the director goodbye. I wanted to go back and say goodbye to my friends too but Ms. Lupin said we had to leave right then, and I definitely was not going to make a fuss in front of her already. She drove me to her house, my new home, and we spent the rest of the day just getting to know each other.

So, that is how I got adopted. It has only been a day and my new life already feels like the one I have always had. My time at the orphanage is like a long dream that I just woke up from. That may be because my new mom is with me all the time. It turns out she is rich so she never has to work and is planning to home school me. She has been talking about all kinds of things that we can do together. She even knows some other families in the area who adopted kids from the orphanage and she wants us to meet each other. It is a lot to take in but all of her ideas are so much fun and she always wants what is best for me.
