NRV Gear is the front runner in the rapidly growing field of virtual reality. The device resembles a visor or helmet which requires an enterprise-level computer running NRV Gear simulation software. Once connected, the visor bypasses normal sensory input to the brain, allowing users to experience and interact with simulated rooms and even whole landscapes as though they are real. The most popular NRV Gear simulation to date is known as “Battlefront,” a medieval fantasy battlefield on which up to 12 players can fight each other using weapons and magic.

Over one year ago, Chuck E. Cheese's announced that it would be rolling out NRV Gear rooms in select locations in the U.S. The company purchased two simulations for its outlets, to appeal to each gender. Targeted at boys was a cityscape in which children are given superpowers and left to fight crime. To appeal to girls, the company offered a medieval castle that included a ballroom and a menagerie of animals. At its announcement, Chuck E. Cheese's promised that this was to be the beginning of a high-tech re-branding of its restaurants.

That fantasy, like those of the simulations, was torn apart in the wake of the child abuse scandal that came to light last week. Employees at the pizza chain exploited the NRV Gear systems in a way that allowed them to control the bodies of the children who were in the simulation. Pedophiles would visit the three locations during a simulation for sexual purposes. The children, who were immersed in the virtual reality, had no awareness or memories of their abuse. Police began to suspect the restaurant when young patrons reported numbness after their visits. Sources have suggested that the NRV Gear was used to blunt pain so that the victims would not be aware of their violation.

Chuck E. Cheese's immediately shut down all of its NRV Gear stations after news broke last week, although there is no indication that other locations were involved in the child sex ring. Dozens of new bills at the state and national level are being prepared to ensure that nothing like this happens again. It remains to be seen what effect this public debate will have on the new laws being pushed through government.
