“Some old bronze amulet in the shape of a scarab beetle, that’s all. Wasn’t very valuable in money terms but probably some crooked guard or warehouse worker over there stole it and hocked it, which is annoying because it’s mentioned on the tablets.”
“Those big tablets with the hieroglyphics?” Jake remembered cataloguing a set of ancient tablets from the crate. Apart from the scarab amulet they were about the only things still intact.
“Yes. I sent them up to the university to get a translation. Here’s the text if you’re interested. It’s just an official order from Ramesses listing what he wanted buried with him. Nothing too exciting, the only mystery is the part where he mentions the scarab amulet.”
Jake had a look. “Make certain this is buried with me above anything else,” he quoted. “I feel no one else is worthy of it, not even my successor.”
“Cryptic isn’t it?” Jennings mused. “Unfortunately, since we don’t have the amulet, we’ll never know what he was talking about.”

“Yes, how did you know?”
“He’s Kelly’s boyfriend!” Jake chuckled. “She ran to him for shelter a lot before she met me.”
“That explains a lot of things. He said his son was seeing a girl he had a few concerns about, now I know why. I’ll definitely bring this up at the next game in a couple of nights.”
Jake nodded. “Ok. That gives me time to bring Kelly around to the idea and to call a friend of mine in the cops. If he can dig up enough dirt I think we can get a court to declare the bastard unfit. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
