Whether travelling around
the world in search of erotic delights (or a really, really good deep dish
pizza -- you know, the kind with the thin crust and all the fillings like
you get in Chicago) , or returning to his 75 room palacial estate overlooking
the Pacific Ocean, John A lives life to the fullest.
Wait a minute, hold on just one minute. I must think
I'm writing a story. The real John A is a simple man. I till my soil and
work my land, providing a meager, yet satisfying, existance for myself
and my harem.
Here are a few frequently asked
questions (well, they're questions that have been asked by at least a couple
of people) :
When did you start writing erotic
stories?
The first erotic story that I ever wrote was a novel I began in March of 1999. Right now the novel is about half finished (and I haven't worked on it in many months). In fact, that was the first bit of fiction that I'd ever written for fun. Previously, any type of fiction that I'd done had been for school or college. So far, in the past year and a half, I've completed 12 stories and have another 37 or so that are in various stages of completion -- and countless numbers of ideas rattling around in my head. The first story that I posted was I Love Golf , a silly little metaphorical piece that I knocked off one morning while wishing the spring weather would warm up. My first serious piece was Five Hours , and that remains one of my favorites.
Why did you start writing
smut (porn, dirty stories, erotica)?
I found the newsgroups alt.sex.stories and alt.sex.stories.moderated in mid 1998, and enjoyed many of the stories I read there. I have a large ego and figured I'd try my hand at it. So I knocked off a quick story which got some favorable reaction -- the next thing I knew, I'm a smut writer.
What do you see as the difference
between porn, smut, and erotica?
Nothing. It's been described that erotica is what I like and porn is what you like but I see the whole argument as nothing but sophistry. I use the terms interchangably. I think it eases some people's delicate sensibilities to say that they write or enjoy erotica as opposed to porn or smut. If you need the distinction to ease your conscience about the material you're reading, then that's fine. But there's nothing wrong with reading and enjoying porn.
What other types of writing
do you do?
Right now, none. In the past I wrote some non fiction, but that was well over a decade ago. Although, I recently have undertaken a non-fiction project that I may or may not take to completion.
How long have you been writing?
Since March of 1999. Before then, I'd never done any writing for fun and never had any desire to. As I answered above, about 15 years or so ago, I used to write non fiction but that was non-creative and in such contrast to what I write now, that I consider the two wholly unrelated. In the dozen or so years in between, I did no writing at all of any type.
I've read some comments from other writers in the newsgroups about how they've been writing for years and how writing is a part of their life. They write just as they breathe, because it's part of who they are. For me, writing has never been like that. I enjoy it, but I don't have to do it to be "me" or feel complete. I suppose that's why I can go weeks at a time having written not one word without it bothering me. Then again, I'll go thorugh flurries during which I'll write 1000-4000 words a day. It all depends upon my whims, I suppose.
Have you ever been published?
Long, long ago in a land far, far away I had some nonfiction writing that was published on a regular basis. However it was in tremendous contrast to the erotic fiction I write today. None of my erotica has been published, nor have I submitted any of it for publication anywhere. Why, do you want to publish me?What do you look like?
Well, since you're curious, I've included a picture of me naked with a couple of my closest friends.
Why do you write erotic stories?
Simply put, I like erotica. I suppose that the easy answer is that I'm a pervert and I find the subject of sex fascinating. Most writers write about things that interest them, and I'm no different, I suppose. I enjoy exploring why two people get together, seeing what makes some relationships work. What causes attraction between people? Do opposites really attract, or are people in similar circumstances more likely to end up together? I suppose I'm just fascinated by the human condition and intrigued by the working of interpersonal relationships.
I also must admit to a certain thrill knowing that there are people out there reading and enjoying stories that I've written. Like I said, I have a big ego. Plus, it's always a nice pick me up when someone writes to me and says "that was such a great story, I was in tears at the end" or "that was the funniest sex story that I've ever read," or "that story was such a turn on, I had to...." or simply "hey, thanks for the story, I enjoyed it." I'd be lying if I said that those types of comments don't give me a tremendous rush.
Why do you write the types
of stories that you write?
Essentially, I write what I like to read. I enjoy romantic stories, so that's what I like to write. My stories tend to have emotion in them. Day to day life has a lot of humor and pain in it and I try to capture that with my characters, whether it's out and out silliness, or more subtle bittersweet humor, or the anguish of ill-fated lovers, I try to reflect genuine emotions in my stories. I also enjoy laughing and making others laugh, so I usually have a character my stories that has an irreverant take on things.
What's your best story?
Ahhh, a subject for debate. According to many people, the epic Love is all you need? is my best story. The conflict in Dan and Chrissy's evolving relationship makes for many emotional twists and turns. I've gotten the most emotional responses on this story. I've been told by some people that it made them cry; to others it's made them angry, happy, and sad. To bring out that kind of emotion in readers is truly special for me. Another fan favorite is my second story, Five Hours , which is perhaps my most bittersweet story. As I read it now, I see areas which I'd change if I were writing it today, but I'm not sure that would make the story any better. Others along these lines are the popular Welcome to Miami and the recent Summer Awakenings, romantic tales of twisting emotions -- the former involving a recently divorced man and a girl he meets on vacation and the latter a story of first time love between teens. More recently, the novel Fonda and Cat, has received popular and critical acclaim and I've gotten letters saying that it's the best erotic story they've ever read. I'm not sure, but the comments are flattering.
As far as the story which most lived up to what I tried to accomplish with it at the outset, that has to be my Y2K story, Non Compliant . It's not my best, by far, but it turned out to be exactly what I hoped it would when I started writing it. I was aiming for a balance of humor and pathos, and I think I achieved that. If you're looking for a story of subtle humor with an interesing twist at the end, I'd suggest this.
Finally, another story of mine which has been viewed as a favorite by some is the blatantly humorous Blind Date . While technically not my best story, more than a few people have written that it was the funniest sex story they'd ever read, and a couple people wrote that it's the funniest story of any type they'd ever read. There's a sequel in the works, but at the rate at which I finish stories combined with the number of unfinished ones in the hopper, I'm not sure when this will be posted.
What's that, you say? I skipped the question alltogether. I guess I did. Well, since I'm cornered, I suppose I'd have to say that the year 2000 Golden Clitorides award winning Story of the Year Love is All You Need? is probably my best story...Do you like getting email from readers?I think.... Ask me tomorrow, though, my answer may change.
I absolutely love it. Feedback from readers is the only "payment" that I get for my stories and it's as valuable for the ego and my inspiration to write as money could be. Feedback inspires me to write more, to improve my writing and to expand the scope of my stories. SO WRITE :) Besides, I don't bite...I only nibble a little.Where do you come up with the ideas for your stories?
An overactive imagination, mostly. I'll look at a relatively innocuous situation in real life and twist it into a story. Other times, I'll take something that really happened and put a spin on it to turn it into an erotic story. It depends. Some things just jump up and shout "story" and they'll write themselves.
Are any of the stories true?
Welllll...that's for me to know and you to find out. And I'm not telling.
What do you do for a living?
I'm independently wealthy, which gives me the opportunity to spend my days at my palacial oceanfront estate with my harem.
Is that picture really you?
What do you think?
Is there something that you won't write about?
Oh, my. There are a lot of things I won't write about. Rape is a big turn-off for me and I won't write anything that involves non-consensual sex. Anything to do with children is also a big no-no in my book. Pedo stories squick me like nothing else, and I'll never write one -- or read one either. Other stories that I won't write would involve snuff or scat -- it's not that I'm revuisled my them like I am by Pedo and Rape, they just do nothing for me, and I find no interest in writing about them. I enjoy writing about interactions between two people and the emotional nuances that these interactions bring about.Have you written any stories that you haven't yet posted anywhere?
Yes, I've actually finished two stories that I've never posted anywhere and I'm not sure if I will either. The first was a strange story that's not erotic in the least and touches on some dark, painful themes. It's a story I'm quite pleased with, but I'm not sure it will ever see the light of day. The other story is quite different from what I usually write, but hardly in the way that the first is. It was written specifically for someone and touches on some 'themes' that aren't usually what I write. Will I ever post either of them? Well, I never say never, but I doubt it.
