Play DateThe next day, I went to Sera's house. We had homework from the same classes, so we decided to do it together after Dragonball Z went off. Both of us laid on her bed, facing each other. Our math workbooks were open to pages 20 and 21. A bunch of long division problems were on both pages.
A lot of times, I would look at Sera. Usually, she would be writing. Sometimes, she'd catch me, so I'd look back at my book. Sometimes when I gaze at her again, she would all of a sudden look back at her book with a smile. We would laugh together at that.
There was some knocks at the door.
"Come in," Sera said, looking up.
Jin opened the door. He was wearing a red coat with the zipper all the way up. Standing next to him was Sera's mother. She was wearing a brown coat that was zipped.
"We're going to the movies now," said Sera's mother. "Wanna come with us?"
I looked at Sera.
"Nah," Sera said. "We'll stay here."
"Have fun on your little play date," Jin laughed.
Sera blushed and looked at her workbook.
"Leftovers from last night's dinner are in the fridge," Sera's mother told us. "Bye."
Jin closed the door.
"What's a 'play date'?" I asked Sera.
"It's a name that grownups use when kids go on dates."
"Why do grownups and kids have different names for the same thing?"
"I don't know, grownups always want to be so much better than us."
I agreed with her on that.
"Sera?" I asked when I finished my homework. She looked at me. "Could me and you have a play date?"
"You mean like my parents are?"
"Yeah."
"How do we do it?"
"On TV, they always watch a movie and eat something. We could watch a movie, then I could pretend to take you out to dinner. We'll eat whatever your parents left us."
She thought about it and smiled. "Cool. Can we dance, too?"
"Yeah."
"'Kay. You go into the living room and wait for me. I'll get ready."
I left her room and sat in the living room.
Two white cow-itches (couches)... sofas, or whatever, were across from each other. A TV that was almost as big as me was against a wall, in between both of them. A square light was on the ceiling. A purple vase was on a circle table in a corner. A black, rectangle table was in the middle of the room.
I heard a door open down the hall, then close. After a while, the door opened again, and then closed again. Sera didn't come in.
I started daydreaming about Pokemon Yellow, when the door opened again and Sera came running into the living room. She was still wearing the black sweater and blue jeans from earlier. Red lipstick was on her lips.
"Hi, Gabriel," she said.
"Hi," I smiled staring at her lips, wondering what lipstick would taste like.
She giggled at me and asked me, "So, wanna watch A Goofy Movie?"
"Okay."
Sera ran away, bursting through her door really loud. When she came back, she had a shiny case with Max and Goofy on it. She put it into the gray VCR that was on top of the TV. It played by itself, so she sat next to me. Really, really close to me.
At the end of the movie, the 'Eye 2 Eye' song started playing while the names of people who made the movie kept showing.
Sera got up and started dancing. She was trying to do the dance that we saw in the movie. Her knees would face each other and then away from each other. One of her hands would move up and down. I laughed at her.
She turned around and pouted. Her face is so cute when she does that. "Come on," she said, grabbing my hand.
I stood up. She did the dance in front of me again. I did the same, and then jumped in the air and made my white socks hit each other, like Max did when he first got on stage.
Me and Sera danced 'til the song went off.
We went into the kitchen after Sera turned the TV off. The glass table had three black chairs around it. I sat in the one that was closest to the living room doorway. Sera sat in the chair across from me. White cups of black cherry were in front of us.
Our hands were on the table. Reaching out, I touched Sera's left hand. She looked at it and smiled. My face turned red as I felt up her warm hand from the wrist to the fingernails. She turned her hand and held mine. Her thumb ran over my fingers.
