Can I Kiss You Again?More kids got to homeroom before me today than yesterday. As usual, I sat in my four-desk group and waited for Sera to come. This time, I was a lot more anxious (We learned that word in Language Arts yesterday) to see her. All night, I couldn't stop thinking about that kiss. I wore a long-sleeved, orange shirt with a black Jordan sign in the middle. I was also wearing dark blue jeans and black and white sneakers.
Today, the boy that sits next to me came before me. His shirt had gray and white stripes. And he wore light brown pants and yellow (I think that was the color) boots. Light brown hair shaped like bowl was on his head. Freckles were all over his skin.
Finally, Sera came and went straight into the coatroom. At least she didn't ditch school 'cause of me. My eyes followed her and stayed in the doorway that she went through. She didn't look mad.
She came out wearing a zipped, white shirt with light blue jeans and white sneakers. A white scrunch was in her hair. "Hey, Gabriel, hi, Otis," she greeted.
"Hi," said Otis.
"Hi," I said.
Sera stayed looking at me and smiling. I looked in another direction. As much as I wanted to talk to her about the kiss, I didn't want to do it in front of Otis. He probly wouldn't make fun of us, but it would still feel weird. I think she felt the same way, 'cause she didn't say anything, either.
Recess came. Now was my chance to talk to Sera. When we were in the cafeteria, I asked Jan and Greta to leave us when we got outside. They did, and me and Sera walked close to the fence. Today was colder than yesterday and I walked with my hands in my coat pockets. When we got to a corner that was pretty deserted, we stood together against the fence. She was standing on my left side.
"I'm sorry about last night," I said, not looking at her.
"Sorry?" Sera asked. "Whatcha do?"
"For the kiss."
Now looking at her, I noticed that her face was turning red. Never thought I'd ever see her blush over anything.
"Oh." We both got quiet until she spoke again. "I thought it was nice of you."
"It was?"
"Yeah." Sera was smiling. "Why'd you do that, anyway?"
I looked straight again. Some kids were doing frontflips and backflips in front of others. "'Cause I like you," I said under my breath.
"Hmm?" She came closer and I felt my face get hotter, even though it was pretty cold outside. "And how come you're not looking at me?"
I still didn't look at her. "'Cause I like you," I said loud enough for her to hear.
Sera gasped. I sighed and kept looking straight ahead. I could feel my skin turning red. When I turned my head, she was looking at me with a smile spread across her face. Her hands went to her hips and she grinned even more. My lips shook until I was smiling back at her.
"You mean it? You like, like me?"
I nodded.
"Really?" Her eyes grew.
"Mmm-hmm."
"Yeah?" Her smile got bigger.
"Uh-huh."
"Yuh-huh?" She got closer to me.
I laughed at the goofy girl. She laughed with me. Leave it to her to be so silly at a time like this. I felt a lot better, though. Her jokes would always make me feel better.
I took a deep breath. "Serious. I... I like you, Sera."
"I really like you, too, Gabriel."
"Really?"
"Really, yeah, yuh-huh."
We laughed again.
I looked at her. She had stopped laughing, and was now smiling at me. Her teeth were showing. One of them was missing. Her cheeks would always get dimples when she smiled. I think that's what first made me like, like her.
"Why`d you leave without saying anything last night?" I asked.
"My parents were waiting for me. I wouldn't want them find out that a boy was kissing me. When I told them that I was going to the dance with you, they teased me for going on my "first date". They would have teased me to sleep if they would have saw us. She twisted a finger by her head and rolled her eyes. "They're craaaaa-aaaaa-aaaazy."
I smiled. "So you`re not mad at me?"
She shook her head. "No. I actually wanted to kiss you someday."
It was then I noticed how loud it was getting. I looked back and forth. A lot more kids were around us now, screaming and running around. Leaning over, I whispered into Sera`s ear. "Could I kiss you again?" That funny feeling from last night came again when I thought about what I said.
Sera gasped and kept her mouth wide open. The nervousness left again when I smirked at her reaction. Closing her mouth, she looked around.
"It's too crowded out here," she told me. "I don't want anybody to make fun of us."
That was true. I wouldn't want anyone to make fun of us either.
