Chapter 8 — Molder

I was pretty happy with myself and decided to walk down to the Starbuck’s down the street.

As I walked along I was just letting my mind wander. I turned a corner and there was the man in front of me. He was an average looking Japanese man in his early twenties. That in itself would have been no big deal but this man said one word that I was not too thrilled to hear, “Die!”

He was holding a pistol with a long silencer in his right hand which came up from his hip until it was pointing directly at my chest.

My heart stopped beating. I panicked. The world slowed around me. I saw his finger tighten on the trigger. I moved.

I slipped to the right and charged the man. I should never have been able to get more than one step forward, but somehow he failed to adjust for my side step. The bullet missed me. At the time I thought it must have been my imagination but I could have sworn I actually saw the bullet go by.

As I got within reach of the man I ripped the pistol from his hand and threw it down the street. Then I slammed my elbow into his face; that was one of the moves I’d learned in self-defense class.

What was weird was that the guy hardly moved through the whole episode, right up to the point I smashed his nose in. He hit the wall hard and the world resumed its normal speed.

I looked around, panting. No one seemed to have noticed what happened. I walked on to the Starbuck’s shaking like a leaf and sat down at a table by the front window to watch and try to regain my composure.

I was pretty badly shaken. Why would the man want to kill me? And how had I avoided being killed? He had me at point blank range; there was no way he could have missed. And how had the people on the street missed the action?

Looking back on it, when I said ‘the world slowed down around me’ I need to make it clear that the world really slowed down around me. It was like my mind had down shifted and pushed the pedal to the floor. I had been in passing gear while my attacker was plodding along in drive.

After a couple of minutes someone noticed the broken body lying on the sidewalk. A commotion started, the police came, and they found the gun. Then an ambulance came. They put the man on a gurney and covered his entire body, including his head. Apparently I had killed him.

That was an unsettling thought. I didn’t like killing as a general rule and I had never had to kill someone before, not directly, personally. On the other hand, I couldn’t think of anything else I could have done.

“May I sit?”

I looked up from my reverie to see a middle aged Japanese man standing by my table. On second look he could have been Japanese, or he might have been Korean or Chinese or any of a dozen oriental races.

“Sure, have a seat, I was just about to leave anyway.”

“Please do not leave yet.” He said as he sat across from me.

“Excuse me.”

“Please stay. I wish to speak with you. My name is Tel.”

“Sam.” I wondered what this was all about. He was well dressed so I didn’t think he was going to ask for a handout.

“Hello Sam. Do you know who that man was that you killed?”

“What?” That shook me. “I... don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Of course you do. But I am not with the police Sam, you need not be concerned, I have no interest in ‘catching’ you.”

“What do you want then?”

“I am a member of an elite but ever dwindling group Sam. I am very similar to you. I am able to mold people to be what I want them to be. Do you understand?”

“A Slaver!” Now he had my full attention.

He smiled. “Yes, but more. I wish to explain all to you, but not here. Will you accompany me to a place I have?”

More than a Slaver? There was something here that might provide some answers to my questions. But I was a little leery.

“All right. I’ll go with you. Mind if I buy a coffee first?”

“That will be fine.”

Lynn and Teri. Find me. Bring weapons but stay out of sight and do nothing unless I am threatened.

I ordered my latte and then followed Tel to an apartment not far from the coffee shop. It was small but in Tokyo it was luxurious. It had a sofa and two soft chairs as well as a nice view of the building across the street through big plate glass windows.

He invited me to sit down. “You are probably full of questions.”

“You could say that. Tel doesn’t seem like a Japanese name for starters.”

“It is not. It is my original name. I am... how to begin?”

He gazed past me, into some distant memory.

“I saw what you did to the young Hunter.” he said. “I had been stalking him but you got him first. It was well done.”

“Hunter?”

“Yes. They have one purpose in life, to hunt down people like us and kill us.”

“Why?”

“Well, for their elders it’s programmed into their DNA. They were created to hate and kill us. Many of the young ones though don’t inherit the hate gene, they are simply taught to hate us from their youth.”

“Why don’t you start at the beginning and tell me who you are?”

“Yes, that would be best.” He gathered his thoughts for a moment. “It began three thousand four hundred and sixty eight years ago. We were at war. We were an interplanetary republic, and we were losing planets to a ruthless empire. We could not stop them. But our losses took place over decades which gave us a chance to create new weapons and improve out fighting ability. Even so we were slowly losing ground. Then we made a breakthrough in genetic engineering that permitted us to create our ultimate weapon, a group of people, military people mostly, all volunteers, and patriots. We changed them genetically. We turned them into super soldiers, super spies; gave them mental abilities that would allow them to control those around them. Made them faster and stronger. Other things. We called them the Mind Molders. I was one of them.

The plan was to deploy into enemy territory and infiltrate from within. We could not be detected; we had no additional parts that any scanner would recognize. We were to gain access to decision makers, learning their thoughts and passing that information back to our superiors, as well as influencing those decisions where convenient. We were thousands, tens of thousands, but the particular group I deployed with never made it to the planet we were supposed to infiltrate.

“As we were being deployed we became aware of the Hunters. What bothered us about them most was that they were not from the enemy, they were a creation of our own government. That is when we realized that when our usefulness was over they would hunt us down and kill us all. We were too dangerous for the politicians to allow us to live.

“We fled. We pushed our super-luminal ship, continuing well beyond systems where known civilizations existed, finally arriving here on Earth.

“But the Hunters were not far behind. They had followed us to this system. We could go no further, the ship was low on fuel as well as food, so we scattered over the surface of the planet. We were surprised to find a primitive human society already here. There had been many colonization efforts in centuries past but we had no idea they had reached this far.

“Among these humans we were like gods. You have heard of Zeus, Apollo, Mars. They were my friends. They are all dead now. The Hunters have killed most of us just as we have killed most of them.

“What is left is our offspring, you Sam and others like you.

“As time went by Sam we learned that our enhanced genes could be passed on. Seldom were they present in the combinations necessary to give our descendents the powers we enjoyed, but once in a great while everything would come together and a grandson would be born who was at least in some regards able to emulate our abilities. They had limited capabilities, like the ability to make slaves of women, but they were not Mind Molders. Mind Molders are super men, faster, stronger and more powerful mentally than the others. There has not been one born in over a hundred years to the best of my knowledge. You are such a one Sam.”

“You’re shitting me! Are you telling me I’m some kind of space alien?”

“No Sam. You are quite human. As am I. You haven’t been listening. All humans on this world came from off planet, as did most of the animal life, although it has changed to adapt through the millennia. Why do you suppose your anthropologists have never been able to find the missing link? Because it is not on this planet!”

“Ok ok. But if we’re so powerful how can the Hunters ever hope to win?”

“They are immune to our powers Sam. We cannot control their minds as we can with lesser men. And they have all of our speed and strength.”

“So it’s an even match when you go up against one of them. Say, why was I able to move faster than that guy on the street then?”

“Because he was not a full fledged Hunter. The Hunters train all of their children to hunt our kind, whether they have special abilities or not. Unlike us their offspring is male, most of them are immune to our powers but very few can move like we do. That one was as normal as everyone else on the street this morning. Anyway Hunters are more organized than our kind. While Molders and Slavers tend to be loners or even recluses, Hunters have a normal family unit, extended relations and they network across the entire earth. Once you attract their attention it is very difficult to escape them.”

“Why didn’t anyone notice what I did?”

“Ah. That was your own doing. You instinctively transmitted an optical filter wave. It signals the optical nerves of all nearby persons to not pass on to the brain some of what the eye is seeing, specifically you and anything you are affecting. It makes you essentially invisible to them.”

“Why couldn’t I do any of this stuff before? Man when I was growing up I was a total dork. I couldn’t run or jump worth a lick.”

“The genetic traits do not become active until well into puberty. Have you tried running or jumping since then?”

“Well. Not really. By then I was a real nerd, I was focused on my computer programs, I’d given up on physical activities.”

He laughed. “It is not the first time I’ve seen that kind of result for a young Molder.”

“And you said you were stalking this hunter?”

“Yes.” He paused. “They killed a woman who had become very dear to me two hundred and thirty years ago. Ever since then I have made it my business to find them wherever they are and kill them. I was hoping this young one would lead me to their lair. About a hundred years ago there was a shift in their strategy, they stopped hunting. I couldn’t figure it out for a long time but now I think I know what they are trying to do. They are lulling us into a state of overconfidence so they can identify us, so that we do not try so hard to hide. I have seen some signs recently that they are beginning to hunt again, so watch yourself. If I’m right there will be a surprise attack on all Molders and Slavers they have identified in the near future.”

“You said we could do other things. Like what?”

“Well there is telepathic control and thought reading.”

“I now about those.”

“Really? Those seem to be the most difficult for some.”

“What else?”

He considered for a moment and then smiled. “My instructor always said that the best lessons were the ones we learned on our own. He also said that these abilities would come to us naturally when we needed them. Our subconscious already knows what to do and in extremely stressful situations our mind uses them without being aware of it. I think I will let you learn of your other abilities on your own, it will be more interesting that way. Besides, I can’t say which abilities you will have, it depends on the combination of genes in your DNA.”

“Gee thanks. So what now? You’ve told me all these secrets, what do you expect me to do now?”

“Anything you like. There are so few of us left, I just wanted to warn you to be careful; and to meet you, it has been a long time since I have met a new Molder.”

“Fair enough Tel. I appreciate your help.”

Suddenly the door burst open and four men came in. All were armed with silenced pistols. One was exceptionally large and apparently he was the leader.

“Well Tel, your time has finally come.” He crowed with a deep sonorous voice.

“Morgred.” Was all Tel said in recognition.

“Yes, it is I. My long search is over and I get a two for one in the bargain. Don’t deny it. We were watching the action on the street earlier just as you were.”

Tel looked at me as if to say ‘I’m sorry I got you into this’.

“Now.” said Morgred. “Don’t resist and I will make this as painless as possible.” He levelled his weapon at Tel.

Lynn and Teri, if you’re going to do something now would be a good time.

I felt myself slip into passing gear again, ready for action. I heard the window shatter behind me and though it was moving fast I saw a bullet zip past me toward Morgred. He was fast, but not fast enough. The bullet caught him in the right arm as he tried to twist away, causing him to drop his weapon.

Another bullet followed the first and slammed into Morgred’s lieutenant, catching him in the left breast.

Tel launched himself at the one on the far right and broke his neck. I had no weapon but I picked up a lamp and hurled it at the one at the far left just as another bullet zipped by catching him in the throat.

Morgred must have realized that his only chance was to close with one of us, using us to shield him from the snipers. He charged me, drawing a long wide knife with his left hand.

He was a lot bigger than me and he was armed where I was not. I knew he would win a straight up fight. So I took a defensive stance and just as he was about to barrel into me I rolled backwards and brought my feet up to his chest. Using his own momentum, I launched him through the window to the ground five stories below. As he passed over me he slashed his knife and opened a nasty gash on my thigh.

Blood spurted from my wound. I’d heard of wounds like that before, there was a good chance I would bleed out before the paramedics could arrive.

I put pressure on the wound but the blood still poured through.

Tel came and knelt beside me. “I take it I have you to thank for the snipers?”

“Yeah. I wasn’t sure I could trust you. Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. It is exactly what you must do if you wish to survive.”

I glanced at the dripping wound. “I think that’s a moot point. I’m going to bleed out very quickly. He must have cut my femoral artery.”

“Then you must learn to heal yourself. It is one of the abilities that was given to us.”

“Really? You’re not just trying to cheer me up are you?”

“Of course not. Now focus. Close your eyes to minimize distractions. See the wound in your mind. See the arteries. See the flesh. See the cells. Send the cells responsible for clotting the blood to the area of the wound.”

It was amazing I was actually able to see inside my body. I sent platelets to the wound. I explored more and found I could accelerate the healing process, causing cells that had been sliced apart to join together again.

It took about five minutes and I wasn’t quite finished when Tel said “We have to leave this place now. The authorities will arrive soon. Can you walk?”

I opened my eyes and sat up. “I think so. Thanks for the help Tel. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to try that.”

I stood and gingerly tested my leg. There was a twinge of pain but I was able to walk with a limp.

We went down the stairway instead of taking the elevator. My bloody thigh was not something the police could ignore.

“Let’s go to my room in the Nirvana. I need to get out of these clothes.”

“Ok.”

Lynn and Teri, I’m behind the building heading for our hotel. See if you can follow along behind me. I want to make sure I am not being tailed. As soon as you’re sure we’ve escaped without notice come up to the room.

As soon as I was back in the room and had introduced Tel to Rosa, Elena and Kai, I stripped off the pants and laid down on the bed. The girls were very concerned when they saw all the blood on my pants but I calmed them.

“Just give me a few minutes of silence so I can focus.”

After fifteen minutes I felt I had done as much as I could. Getting out of the bed I tested the leg. No pain. I took a few steps, no limp. I was good to go.

“Ok girls. Get packed. We’re leaving now.”

Just then Lynn and Teri came in.

“All clear.” said Teri. “We thought he was dead, but the guy you kicked through the window got up and limped away after a few minutes.”

“Morgred.” Tel groused. “That’s another thing Sam. True Hunters can heal themselves just as well as we can.”

“That’s alright. I really don’t like killing people.”

“No, it’s not alright. He has seen you now. He knows you exist, and he knows you are a Molder. He will never stop looking for you.”

“But he doesn’t know my name and he doesn’t know where I live. So let’s get out of here before he finds us again.”

“Agreed. But remember something else, he is not the only one. Wherever you go there will be Hunters nearby. Perhaps not the more powerful originals like Morgred but their offspring. So be vigilant Sam.”

“I will. You want a ride to California?”

“No thank you. I have my own plans. I’ll take my leave now. It was a pleasure to meet you Sam and I was also very happy to make the acquaintance of these beautiful snipers who saved our lives. I have tried to not burden myself with many slaves so as to give the Hunters as few clues as possible about my identity. In the past women needed to be looked after and protected, but now I see that it is in my best interests to search for someone like your warrior women for my own protection.”

“One more question Tel. I seem to have a hard time influencing men. I can do it sometimes but it’s much more difficult than it is with women.”

“Yes. It has always been so. But with practice you will find you can do it with more consistent results and with less effort. Practice Sam. Practice makes perfect. Though I must add that many more men than women seem to inherit the hunter gene that makes them immune to mind control so there will be men you cannot influence.”

We said goodbye and Tel stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him. Just then I remembered another question I wanted to ask him. Going quickly to the door and opening it I expected to see Tel walking down the hallway, but he was nowhere to be seen. I wondered how he had gotten to the elevator so quickly but dismissed it.

The rest of us packed and headed for the airport.

* * *

Going back across the International Date Line was weird. We left at three pm and arrived at the island at nine am the same day. We’d gone back in time.

We rested on the island for the rest of the day, spending time in the lagoon and in bed. I took a turn with each of the girls and then went to sleep.

In my waking hours I thought about what Tel had said about Mind Molders being able to make people into whatever we want them to be. I wondered if that meant just my slaves or could I change someone permanently without making her my slave?

We left the island early the next morning, stopped in Hawaii for fuel and headed for San Francisco. I wanted to give Kai a little time with her parents before going home.

I was sick of being on a plane by the time we hit San Francisco. It was four pm local time but it was early for us and we had rested well during the night. So I rented a mini-van and drove the girls around San Francisco sightseeing. Actually only Rosa and Elena had not been to San Francisco before so all of the rest of us had tons of places we wanted to show them.

I got two adjoining rooms in the Ritz Carlton for us.

Kai called her parents. We came up with a story that had Kai being kidnapped and taken to Japan as a victim of white slavery, and me rescuing her from the clutches of her captor. It was close enough to the truth that she wouldn’t have to remember a lot of lies and would explain why she had never called them.

She told them we would stop by tomorrow, they still lived in the same house.

The next morning the other four girls continued their sightseeing while Kai and I took the car over to Japan town. She guided me to a Taekwondo dojo above which was her family’s home. Her father was the sensei at the dojo. We went to the side of the building and up a stairway to ring the doorbell.

A middle aged Japanese woman came to the door and seeing Kai burst into tears and wrapped her in motherly arms. What followed was a series of tearful reunions. After her mother finally invited us in we met her father, Earl Rodgers, a very fit blond man in his mid forties, and her two younger brothers Daniel, twenty two who looked like his father, and Bruce, twenty three who resembled his mother in all but height which was equal to his brother.

The house was full of trophies, plaques and ribbons for taekwondo championships and tournament wins.

Kai had to tell her story from the beginning. She did a good job, leaving out the part where her captor and her rescuer had super powers that enslaved her.

“I guess we owe you a debt of gratitude Mr. Williams.” said her father when she had finished explaining how I had found her and taken her away from her captor.

“Happy to help Mr. Rodgers. Kai deserves to be happy.”

“Kai, baby, we still have your old room just the way you left it. Do you have any things we need to take upstairs for you?”

“No daddy. I won’t be staying anyway.”

“What? You come back after all this time and you aren’t staying?”

“No daddy. I’ll be going home with Sam. He lives in San Diego.”

I could tell her father was angry. “Baby, you know you’re not under any obligation to him just because he helped you don’t you?”

“It’s not like that daddy. I love Sam. I couldn’t bear to be any place else, I need to be with him.”

“Kai, you’re just confused. You’ve had to be obedient to others for so long you may have become accustom to it, maybe even wanting it, finding it comforting. But it doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Just spend some time with your family and you’ll get used to making your own decisions again.”

“I’m not confused daddy. I know exactly what I’m doing. Please try to understand, I want to be with Sam.”

He turned to me. “So you’re just going to take my little girl away from me again?”

“Well sir, I’m sorry but I think I can make Kai happy. San Diego’s not that far away, we can come visit from time to time, or you can come visit us.”

“No. You’re not taking her.” He stood up threateningly and so did his two sons. “She’s staying right here with us.”

Now it was my turn to get angry. I stood up. “Mr. Rodgers, you’re not keeping her here against her will.”

“Who’s going to stop me? Not you.” He said looking me over. “Between my sons and me we’ve won every unarmed combat competition there is.”

“Daddy, please don’t do this. If you hurt Sam I’ll never forgive you.”

“I think you will, once you come to your senses.”

“It looks like you and I are going to tangle then.” I said. “I don’t want to break up your house, why don’t we go down to the dojo and we’ll spar to decide who takes Kai.”

He laughed and shook his head. “Alright. Come on boys, let’s go down stairs and let Mr. Williams show us what he can do.”

“Kai, you stay here with your mother.” I ordered.

We four men went down to the dojo which they had closed because of Kai’s return.

“Ok Williams, which one of us would you like to try first?”

“All three at once.”

“You gotta be kidding me. Well if that’s the way you want it, at least it’ll be over quickly.”

They circled me and adopted that familiar karate stance that we’ve all seen on TV and movies.

My senses came alive. I could see every twitch, every glance. I knew where their punches were going to land as soon as each move began.

Daniel tried a round house kick which I ducked. Bruce punched at my face and I blocked his strike and punched him in the chest. I pulled the punch a little but it still knocked him back on his butt.

Earl was aiming a kick at my left knee. I moved my leg out of the path of his foot, twisted and swept his other leg from under him.

Bruce had the wind knocked out of him from my punch to his chest and he was out of the fight.

Daniel was recovering from his missed roundhouse and getting reset in his stance. Earl was on his back on the matt but was rolling to his feet already.

I noticed them glance at each other and nod. Whatever they were going to do it was going to be a coordinated attack.

They came. Daniel aimed a flurry of punches at my face while Earl swept his leg around to cut mine out from under me. I just stepped back avoiding the punches while at the same time skipping over Earl’s leg like a jump rope.

Earl’s move had him out of position to support his son. I stepped under Daniel’s next punch and landed a solid punch to his gut. He went down like a sack of potatoes.

Now it was only Earl and me. Earl attacked my midsection with vicious kick that would have had me bleeding internally if it had connected. I side stepped the kick, grabbed his extended leg and lifted bringing him again to his back. As he rolled to his knees I threw myself onto his back and put him in a full nelson, not allowing him to get to his feet.

Bruce and Daniel were both moaning and trying to catch their breath.

“Give it up Earl. Kai’s coming with me.”

He nodded. “Ok. I give.”

I let him go and backed away.

He rolled over and sat on the matt. “Where the hell did you learn to move like that?”

“It’s a gift.”

“I’ll say. I’ve never seen anything like it.” He looked over to his sons. “You guys ok.”

They both nodded.

“He punches like a sledgehammer too! God that hurt!” Bruce exclaimed.

“I think it’s gonna hurt tomorrow too.” Daniel added.

“Alright Williams. I don’t like it but I won’t keep Kai here. I am going to have you checked out though. I have friends in the police who can tell me everything I need to know about you, and if I find out you’re not good for Kai nothing we decided here will matter.”

“Understood. Then I’d better tell you that Kai is not the only woman who’ll be living in my house, but Kai already knows that and doesn’t have a problem with it.”

“What!? So what, you want Kai for a threesome?”

“Actually there are...” I counted on my fingers, “nine women living with me.”

“Nine!?” Exclaimed Bruce and Daniel simultaneously.

Earl’s eyes narrowed.

Bruce continued. “Man, you gotta tell me how you do that.”

Daniel punched him in the shoulder. “Stupid. He’s talkin’ about our sister.”

“Oh yeah. Still, how do you do it man. I mean how do you support them all, for example?”

“Well, I’m pretty well off. But most of them are successful women in their own right. One’s a psychiatrist, one’s a police officer, one’s an attorney, and two are... security specialists and millionaires independently of my wealth. Kai doesn’t have a job right now but if she wants to she can get a job as a physicist any time she chooses.”

“Physicist?!”

“Yeah. She went to university in Japan.”

“Wow!” Daniel exclaimed.

Earl cleared his throat. “You’re one of them aren’t you?”

“Excuse me? One of who?”

“My grandfather used to hunt them. Men who could make slaves out of women by just looking at ‘em.”

Uh oh.

Earl continued. “My father decided to make a break from that group, he thought it was a waste of time. I never got involved but he told me about it. Now I wonder if he was wrong.”

Daniel and Bruce clearly had no idea what their father was talking about.

“Earl listen. I didn’t enslave Kai. The man who did died while I was in Tokyo. When that happens the nearest one with the necessary capabilities inherits the slaves of the dead man. That’s what happened to Kai. She became mine when her master died. If you killed me the same thing would happen again, only who knows whose slave she would become.

“I’ll care for her and do my best to make sure she’s protected and happy, another might not be as conscientious.

“If you tell your Hunter relatives about me I’ll just have to disappear and you’ll never see Kai again. I can’t change what I am, I’m just trying to make the best decisions I can with the situation I’ve been given. But if you’ll just trust me to care for her she’ll be fine and we will visit you and let you visit us. So you have an important decision to make Earl.”

Earl ground his teeth. I could practically see the gears turning in his head.

Daniel started to say something but Earl held up his index finger to silence his son.

Finally he spoke. “All right Williams. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. You treat her right and I’ll keep my mouth shut, we’ll keep our mouths shut.” he corrected himself looking intently at his sons. “Is that clear boys?”

“I don’t even know what the hell you’re talking about.” responded Bruce.

“I’ll explain it more clearly later. For now just tell me you’ll keep this secret until I say otherwise.”

“Sure dad.”

“Alright. Now what?” Earl asked me.

“Well, I promised Kai a day with her family, so I recommend you all take advantage of her being here today. Tomorrow we’re flying home.”

“Ok. I suppose I should thank you for that too. That’s one of the reasons I’m inclined to trust you Williams. You didn’t have to bring her here or even let her contact us, but you did. So let’s go back up stairs and spend some time with Kai.”

The rest of the day was much more pleasant. Kai and her family talked about the good times they had shared before she was taken. She got caught up on all that had happened to them since. They laughed and cried and at the end of the day everyone was in a pretty good mood.
