Chapter 12 — Counterattack

Just as we passed the La Jolla exit another question occurred to me, a very important question.

“Sue, was your group of Hunters responsible for blowing up my apartment complex and killing my slaves?”

“No Master. That was as much a surprise to us as it was to you. We tried to find out who did it but couldn’t learn anything.”

I pounded on the dash. Having them guilty of such a heinous crime would make what I had to do easier. The fact that they were not the ones who did it however didn’t change what I had to do, they were trying to kill me after all, but I would have been a lot more enthusiastic had they been the guilty party for the other murders. I was also frustrated because I was reminded that Julie and Kristen’s murders were still unsolved.

“I’m sorry Master.”

“I’m not mad at you Sue. It’s just the situation.” I replied.

* * *

We picked up Elena, Rosa and Tayesha at the Marina. They greeted Sue enthusiastically, welcoming her as a new sister.

At the new house we found Adiva, Stefani and Chana. Casey, Lynn and Teri were out watching the watchers.

I called Lynn, who seemed to have taken charge. “Bring everyone in to the new house. Don’t go to the old house at all.”

“Yes Master.”

About an hour later Lynn, Teri, Casey and Gloria came in.

I had them all here, eleven slave girls. I sat them down and explained the situation as I understood it.

“The Hunters will be getting anxious before long with Sue not reporting in and none of us showing up at the other house, so we have to act fast. First we’re all moving to a hotel for a few nights until this is done, except for Gloria of course, Gloria I think you can go home to your family. Adiva, you remember the Presidential Suite at the Royal Regency don’t you?”

“Yes Master.”

“Good. Take everyone but Elena and I’ll meet you there in a little while. Elena, you come with me.”

I found a piece of paper and wrote Sam.

Then I wrote the address of the Hunter enclave.

At the bottom I wrote schedule movers for Tuesday morning.

I folded the paper and unfolded it and folded it again on different lines. Giving it to Elena I said “Elena, this could be a little dangerous but here’s what I need you to do. Do you have your pistol?”

“Yes Sam.”

I explained what I wanted her to do. It was a little complicated, but she was a bright girl and I knew she could handle it.

As she walked out the front door I went to the garage and got on my motorcycle which had been brought over by the movers. Broadcasting invisibility I followed her around the block. If she didn’t notice me neither would anyone else.

She walked around the block counterclockwise and when she reached the street the old house was on she crossed over to the far side of the road and approached the car of her brother’s man on the passenger side.

Pulling her pistol from her little clutch bag she opened the door and got in. I stepped up to the side of the car so I could hear.

“Do not move.” she said. I nice simple introduction I thought.

“Hija de la chingada!” exclaimed the watcher. “Who... ah you are Elena. I recognize you now.”

“That is right Cristobol, I recognize you also. I want you to give my brother a message.”

“I will take you to him.” He reached for the keys.

“No. You tell him to leave us alone. We belong to Sam now, he is our only family. Tell him that both Rosa and I wish to stay with our new master.”

“I do not understand.” he complained.

“Just tell him. Tell him exactly what I said.”

She moved to get out. I noticed that he was moving his right hand downward and I almost intervened. But Elena saw it too.

“Stop!” she said, pointing the gun at his head. “I will shoot you if you try to stop me. Put your hands on the steering wheel.”

“Ok, ok. I won’t try nothing.” he tried to calm her.

She got out, keeping the pistol trained on him the whole time. I noticed the paper in the passenger seat, she had accidently dropped it just as we had planned.

“Now drive away Cristobol. Do not try to follow me, there are more guns than mine on you right now.”

He looked around nervously, started the car and drove away.

I stopped broadcasting invisibility and handed Elena the spare helmet. “You did great baby.”

She jumped onto the back of the bike and we headed for the hotel.

At the hotel everyone was getting settled in. Stefani had taken care of getting us checked in and sorting everyone into different rooms.

The Presidential Suite had a nice big dinner table and food had been brought up from the restaurant. We all sat down to eat.

Lynn asked “Master, what are we going to do about all these people watching us?”

“Sometimes Lynn when you have more than one problem you can use one to solve another. Elena and I just gave her brother some false information. He thinks that I’m hiding out at the Hunter’s ranch in Temecula. And he thinks I’m moving from there tomorrow. I’m willing to bet he won’t let this opportunity slip away. There’ll be an attack on that compound tonight.”

“So you’re using the drug lord to solve the problem of the Hunters?”

“Yes, and vice versa. I’m sure the drug lord’s crew will be reduced in the exchange as well. But I’m thinking we should stack the deck. We can’t let any of the Hunters survive, as much as I hate it there just isn’t any choice, it’s me or them.”

“What did you have in mind?”

“Well, you did say you’re a trained sniper didn’t you?”

* * *

It was a cool drizzly October night, which was perfect because Lynn, Teri, Sue and I were all in Ghillie suits, those amorphous things with dangling pieces of cloth that made you look like a bush or clump of debris, and they were warm.

We were looking down on the Hunter compound from a nearby rise. A half-moon caused a glow in the cloudy sky, just enough light to see the shapes of people moving about, if there had been anyone moving about. We had walked a long way to get to our spot, taking the long way around from another dirt road that passed to the north of the compound.

It was nearly ten o’clock and there was no sign of an attack yet. The Hunter compound seemed quiet and peaceful. Very deceiving. I thought. They’d kill me in a heartbeat if they found me. I guess I was trying to justify the action I was taking against them.

I must have dozed off at some point, I woke to a nudge from Lynn. “Something’s happening.”

There was gunfire from the direction of the road, about a mile away. There were two houses there and they housed the people who guarded the drive to the main compound.

After about five minutes the gunfire ceased. There had been a lot of scrambling around during those five minutes and now the main compound, which consisted of three more houses, was hunkered down and dug in for a fight.

Soon several vehicles came roaring down the dirt driveway and scattered in a strategic pattern that gave cover to those who poured out of them.

That’s when things really got lively. This was the first time I had ever seen a firefight. The noise of the weapons and the bright muzzle flashes were overpowering. I was glad we were not directly involved.

It looked like a stand-off for a few minutes, neither side gaining an advantage when the drug lord’s team started lobbing tear gas into the windows of the homes. It took a while but people finally started coming out with their hands up. The firing had stopped. Not what I wanted.

“Teri, Lynn, bounce a couple of rounds off the hoods of the cars down there.”

They did. Their weapons were silenced so no one knew where the shots came from but the drug lord’s people opened fire again mowing down the Hunters who were outside.

Then Rodriguez’ men donned gas masks and stormed the buildings. There were only two survivors, who were bound and thrown to the ground outside, away from the buildings, at which point no one was paying them much attention.

“Take those two out.” I said.

Lynn took aim and put a bullet into the heart of each.

Rodriguez came up in his Suburban and after a few minutes started cursing at his men in Spanish; at least that’s what it sounded like. By now they must have figured out that his sisters were not here and neither was I. Life is full of disappointments Rodriguez. Get used to it.

“Lynn, start taking out Rodriguez’ men.”

She and Teri both began methodically popping high velocity rounds into the men in gas masks exiting the three homes. It didn’t take long for them to figure out something was wrong. The survivors scrambled for their cars, there were only enough of them left for a driver for each car. The cars each spun their wheels and sped down the driveway, away from the invisible source of death.

“Sue. Is there anything in there that would be useful to me?”

“Maybe. There’s a computer with lots of information about the Hunters organization.”

“Yes. That’s something I’d like to get my hands on. Lynn, Teri, you stay here, Sue, you come with me. Quickly, before the police show up.”

Sue and I ran down to the main house. When we reached the edge of the yard I stopped stone still. The blood and gore were horrible. Among the dead Slavers were the bodies of young men, cut down just as they were starting their lives. Some were still whimpering or moaning, but they wouldn’t last much longer.

When I was a kid I used to get together with the other kids in the neighborhood and play army. We’d each pick up a stick and that would be our gun. Then we’d sneak around and try to ambush each other. If someone else shot first you were supposed to fall down dead, but then you could get up and start all over again. I enjoyed strategy games and roll play games. I had been in that mode ever since Larry’s attack on me. I wasn’t thinking of the hunters or the druggies as people, they were just pieces in a game.

Now, looking at the carnage I had caused, it came home to me that this was not a game. I hadn’t been prepared for the utter horror of seeing this destruction close up. I already regretted doing this and I was feeling a little sick to my stomach. Sue urged me to hurry as she tip-toed through the gore. I took a deep breath and gingerly traced her path, carefully avoiding the blood and guts. As we went inside I was careful to not touch anything where I might leave fingerprints.

Sue showed me to where the computer was kept. It was a large desktop system with three hot-swappable raid drives. That was great for me since it meant I didn’t have to tote the whole system.

I jerked out the hard drives and put them in my pack.

“Anything else?” I asked Sue.

She shook her head no, then suddenly stopped. “Yes. One more thing.”

She led me to a back bedroom, to a walk-in closet. “Wait here.” she said and walked into the closet. There was some shuffling and then a gasp.

“Oh my god Ashley, I forgot all about you!” I heard Sue’s muffled voice from inside the closet.

Then another female voice, “Sue. Thank god you’re ok. I almost shot you just now, I thought you were one of them.”

“No, they’re gone, you’re safe now Ashley. But we have to get out of here. Come on.”

Sue emerged from the closet with a suitcase in her hand followed by a willowy blond teenager with a tear-streaked face.

When she saw me the blond was startled. “Who are you?”

“This is Sam.” Sue said. “M... Sam this is Ashley. Her father was here with us.” She turned to Ashley. “Ashley honey, I’m sorry but your father is dead. I saw his body outside.”

Ashley looked stunned. “No! Dad no!” She ran outside. Her father was one of the ones who had surrendered only to be mowed down.

Ashley was crying over the body of her father. I felt just awful. And once again I felt like puking. I swallowed hard and closed my eyes for a moment.

Sue turned to me and said “I don’t know if you know this but Hunters tend to have male children. Ashley is the exception. She and her father arrived just a week ago, he was a specialist, he was a slaver assassin, brought in for the purpose of taking out our primary target…, who had disappeared for a while. She was raised like me, she hates Slavers with a passion, and her father taught her everything he knew.”

Sue meant me. I was the slaver who had disappeared for a while. Maybe I should have been thanking Rodriguez instead of killing off his men.

Ashley looked up from her mourning and asked “Who is he Sue?”

Sue looked at me. “Do you want to tell her Sam?”

I was trying to figure out how to handle the situation. I hesitated.

Then Ashley got a puzzled look on her face. “Sam? Sam! You’re him! My god Sue! You’ve been taken!”

From under her coat she pulled a pistol and pointed it at me. My reflexes were fast, fast enough to make her miss, but Sue didn’t know that. She dove in front of the pistol as it went off shouting “No!” and went down in a heap.

Ashley stood there with her mouth open in shock, staring at Sue gurgling on the ground, bloody bubbles forming at her mouth.

I stepped up and twisted the gun from Ashley’s hand. “Shit! Ah Sue, why did you go and do that?”

Sue choked out the word “Master” and then stopped breathing.

I swore again.

“Sue! I didn’t mean it.” Ashley cried. “Why did you get in the way?”

“She was trying to save me.” I said.

Ashley seemed to remember me at that point. “You! This is your fault. I’ll kill you!”

I took a deep breath. “Ashley. I’ve got two options right now. Either I kill you here or I make you my slave.”

She gasped and backed up a step. Bringing the back of her hand to her mouth she glanced to the right and left, looking for an escape. Then she seemed to come to a decision. “I’d rather die.”

“I thought you might say that. But I think there’s been enough killing for one night.”

I enslaved her. “Ashley. You are now my loyal slave. Now wake up.”

She blinked a few times and gasped “Master! I’m sorry I tried to kill you. I didn’t know what it would be like. I was afraid. But I didn’t know I would be so happy.”

“I know. Let’s get out of here.”

I picked up the suitcase Sue had been carrying and headed for the hill where Lynn and Teri waited. When we got there I introduced Ashley.

“We saw what happened. It happened too fast for us to do anything. I’m sorry about Sue Master.”

“I didn’t mean to!” Ashley was crying. “I liked Sue.”

I was angry with her. But I thought No, I’m angry at the old Ashley. She’s mine now. I put my arm around her. “It’s ok little one. What’s done is done. Now stop crying and come with us.”

“Look!” Lynn said pointing off in the direction of the road.

A car with flashing red and blue lights was approaching the driveway.

“Time for us to leave.” I picked up my ghillie suit, handed Sue’s to Ashley and we headed for the car.

* * *

Back at the hotel I introduced Ashley to everyone and told them about Sue.

“Well, let’s see what Sue gave her life for.”

I sat down on the sofa and set the suitcase on the coffee table. Popping the latches I opened it to find bundles of hundred dollar bills.

“Do you know what this is Ashley?”

“No Master. But I know they like to keep plenty of cash handy in case they need it quickly.”

“Well, I’d say plenty is the right word.”

I counted it. Four million and change.

This was an unexpected benefit of the raid. But I was thinking that I’d give it all back to have a chance to change my decision. I kept seeing all those dead men in my mind. I shook my head. “It was a mistake. I shouldn’t have done this.”

Lynn tried to convince me I had done the right thing. “They would have killed you in the blink of an eye Master, and you can bet they wouldn’t have any pangs of conscience afterward.”

I was angry with myself. “No. There had to have been a better way, I was just in too big a hurry to think it through.”

“You were out-numbered and out-gunned.” she replied. “I counted sixteen men in that compound, not counting those in the front houses. Every one of them would have taken his turn to hunt you down. Every one of them would have killed you at the first opportunity. I don’t know how else you could have handled it.”

“I could have run!” I barked. I let my self-blame get the best of me, my anger at my own actions blazed against all of them. “Everyone out! Get out! All of you!”

They all left the room and I was alone. But I didn’t feel any better. I felt really sick. Rushing to the toilet I puked my guts out until nothing else would come up.

How had I let myself become this thing? How could I have become so callus to life and death? I didn’t recognize myself any more.

I threw myself onto the bed and started crying like a baby.

* * *

I must have cried myself to sleep. When I woke I was sandwiched between two naked bodies. I extracted myself enough to sit up and found Kai and Elena in bed with me. It figured, the two who could disobey commands if they thought it was for my own good.

They were fast asleep.

Slowly I continued to unwrap arms and legs from around my body and got out of bed. I needed a shower.

The water was fantastic, it washed away the sweat and dirt, but it couldn’t wash those pictures of the dead from my mind. By the time I got out I almost…, almost felt human again.

Kai and Elena were awake.

“Would you two like to explain yourselves?”

They shared a glance and Kai volunteered “We were afraid for you Sam. We thought you shouldn’t be alone.”

“I see. So are you going to tell me I did the right thing?”

“Yes. We’re all in agreement, especially Ashley. After we explained to her all that happened yesterday she said that if you hadn’t taken such decisive action they would have found you eventually. Apparently someone from Japan sent out an alert with a description that fits you perfectly. The order was given that you had to be killed immediately and there is still going to be a kill on sight order for anyone who finds you.”

That shocked me. My life as it had been was over. I didn’t know whether to shout or cry. I was so ticked off, but the hunters were dead and I was still angry with myself for having to kill them. I was confused. I needed to think.

“I have to go. Tell the girls to stay here for a few days. I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

“Where are you going?” Elena sounded worried.

“I don’t know. I just need some time alone.”

Grabbing my leather jacket and helmet I took the elevator to the ground floor and got on my bike. I drove fast. Heading east on I-8 I just let the road carry me wherever it led. Six hours later I stopped in Phoenix.

How the hell did I get all the way out to Phoenix? I thought. I must be crazier than even I was willing to admit.

It was too late to start back that night and I was hungry and tired from the long ride. I didn’t want to stay at a hotel though so I stopped at a Walmart and picked up a sleeping bag and a small tent. Then I found a Pollo Loco and got half a chicken to go.

It was easy to find a dirt road heading out into the desert but I didn’t follow it too far off the highway, just far enough to be out of sight and have the desert night to myself. I didn’t even set up the tent, I just laid it out on the sand and unrolled my sleeping bag on top of it.

Lying there looking at the stars I reviewed my situation. A man with lots of slave girls at his beck and call and nowhere to lay my head that would feel safe. I couldn’t go back to Adamson Corp. They might be watching it. I couldn’t go to any home, they could eventually find me through the girls. I was going to have to abandon some of them, at least the original four, well four of the first five. Chahna, my first. Adiva, my third. Stefani, was she the fourth or fifth, I couldn’t remember. And Casey.

All of them were special to me. I didn’t want to leave them behind. But they were known to the hunters, they could be watched, tracked, and if they came to me or I went to them I could be found. I had to disappear from their lives for all intents and purposes, or I had to take them with me and we all had to disappear from our old lives.

The stars were amazing out there in the desert. Crystal clear, shining so brightly I felt like I could reach out and touch them. That’s where we came from I thought. I laid there staring at them for a long time before I slept.
