The Slaver Chronicles — Book 1 — Sam

Chapter 7 — Wounds

I finally caught up to Kristen and Jim in the Intensive Care Unit.

Since I wasn’t a relative it took a while to convince them why I should be allowed to go in to see them.

It was a moot point though. They were both still unconscious.

Kristen had had to have surgery on her arm. It was a bad break right at the elbow and it would be a long time healing. But the prognosis was good. She had also been beaten pretty severely and had a lot of bruises all over her body.

Jim was in worse shape. He had a serious head injury and was in danger of slipping into a coma.

ICU has limited visiting hours so I went home when it got late to clean up.

The apartment felt too empty, too lonely without Kristen there. I realized how much I missed her, and I finally realized how much I loved her. I broke down and cried myself to sleep on the sofa.

When I woke up the next morning it was nearly eight o’clock. I was so stiff and sore I could hardly move. Plus I had slept in a bad position on the sofa and my neck was stiff.

I shuffled into the bathroom and started the hot water. I stood under the stream for a long time just letting the warmth relax my poor muscles.

Breakfast was quick. Raisin bran, juice, coffee. I had to get back to the hospital.

As I was leaving I remembered something. I have to call work.

Pulling out my cell phone I made the call and asked for the HR department.

“HR this is Margarete.” She was a taciturn old timer who never had a kind word for anyone.

“Hi Margarete, this is Sam Williams in IT. I won’t be in today. I had a family emergency.”

“Oh yes, Mr. Williams. You’ve been written up for leaving work without permission yesterday. You need to come up to HR this morning and meet with Ms. Ramirez and your supervisor.”

“Sorry I can’t do that. Like I said, family emergency.”

“What kind of family emergency, you’re not even married are you?”

You know, sometimes people can be so idiotic. I really didn’t feel like explaining myself. “I do have a girl friend and she and her father were attacked yesterday. They’re in the hospital, that’s where I’ll be. Tell Doug to call my cell if he runs into anything he can’t handle.”

“Mr. Williams that is not acceptable. I’ll have to write you up again...”

I closed the phone and started out the door. Then I remembered something else. I had an appointment with Chahna today. Should I cancel? It was for later this afternoon and I really didn’t want to miss it so I decided to wait and play it by ear. Maybe I could still make it.

When I got up to ICU I found that Jim was still there and still unconscious. Kristen had been moved to another room. I got the room number from the nurse and went there.

She was still asleep so I sat down in a padded chair next to the bed.

I got a call from Doug at work at about 10 AM. “Yeah Doug, what’s up?”

“Hey man, the whole office is talking about you. You’re famous Sam, we all saw you on the news last night. You kept that bomb from blowin’ up the hospital.”

“Yeah I guess I was in the wrong place at the right time.” I remembered all the news crews at the scene of the explosion. I wasn’t trying to hide so they probably got some pretty good footage of me with their zoom lenses.

“Man I just wanted to let you know nobody’s going to bust your chops for taking off yesterday or today. Just take care of your business and come back to work as soon as you can.”

“All right. Thanks Doug. I appreciate that.” Kristen started to stir. “Gotta go Doug, but thanks again.”

“No problemo man, see ya.”

Kristen stirred again. Suddenly she gasped and opened her eyes wide. “No...” she started to yell.

I was by her side in an instant. “It’s ok baby, it’s ok. It’s all over now. The bad guys are gone. I’m here for you.” I stroked her good arm.

She slowly focused on my face and the fear left her. “Oh Master, Master. I was so scared. They wanted a letter and I couldn’t find it. They kept hitting me. Oh they twisted my arm.” She looked at her arm suspended in traction.

“Yeah baby, they broke it. You had surgery last night. I was so worried about you. Thank God you’re ok.”

“They were the men who used to live in your apartment.”

“Were they? That explains a lot then. You were right about them after all.”

“They were so cruel. Oh Sammy it was horrible!”

“I know baby, I know. But it’s over now.”

“Thank you for being here Sammy, it means so much to me. Where’s my grandpa?”

“They beat him too Kristen. He’s in pretty bad shape, still unconscious. But he’s getting the best care right here in the hospital.”

“Oh no. Not grandpa! Oh Sammy please don’t let anything happen to him.”

“I’ll do my best baby, but it’s kinda out of my hands right now, you know?”

“I know, I know. I just couldn’t bear to lose him.”

I kissed her. “Kristen, I love you, and Jim’s my friend to, I’ll do everything I can to make sure he gets the best care.”

“Oh thank you Sammy, I love you too, so much. Please go check on him now, I need to know he’s ok.”

“Ok babe. You just rest here. I’ll be back soon.”

“Oh, Sam?”

“Yeah?”

“You should probably call my dad and tell him what happened.”

“Don’t you think it would be better if you called him yourself?”

“No. I don’t have any will power to resist my father when he gets adamant; I need you to be in charge Master.”

“Ok, I’ll call him.”

She gave me his private number and I was dialing as I left her room.

“McBeth.” said the male voice on the other end.

“Mr. McBeth this is Sam Williams, I’m Kristen’s boyfriend. I just wanted to let you know that Kristen was attacked yesterday and she’s in the hospital. She’s got a broken arm and some bruises but otherwise seems to be ok.”

“Who the... What the hell have you done to my daughter? Kristen doesn’t have a boyfriend, I mean look at her, who would want her as a girlfriend? Who are you really?”

“Honest sir, it’s just like I said. Kristen and I have been living together for a couple of weeks over at her grandfather’s apartments.”

“LIVING TOGETHER!? God damn it to hell boy you stay away from my daughter! You said she’s in the hospital? Which one?”

“Uh, Mercy.”

“Listen buddy, I think I know what your game is but you won’t get one red cent of my money by pretending to care about Kristen. I’m coming down there right now with my lawyer and we’re bringing her home. You stay away from her!”

He hung up.

Damn! This is not good. I figured I had about an hour before they showed up. So I went to check on Jim.

The nurses didn’t want to let me in to see him until one of them recognized me from the TV footage of the truck bomb, then there was nothing that I couldn’t have asked for.

They told me he was still unconscious and they were afraid he might slip into a coma.

I went in and sat by his bed. I put my head in my hands talked to the walls. “Ah Jim. What am I gonna do. I sure wish you were here to help me.”

“What’s the problem Sam?”

“Jim! You’re awake!”

“Tell me what’s going on.” He was laboring to speak and his voice was a little slurred.

I gave him a brief recap finishing with the conversation I had just had with Kristen’s dad.

“Call my attorney. Steve Bartholemue. Tell him what’s happening.” He gave me a phone number.

“Sam. I want Kristen to have it all. I changed my will. It’s all hers. But she’ll need help, you help her.”

“Don’t worry about that, we’ll take care of the apartments while you’re in here.”

He smiled and gave me a very weak waving off gesture like he was dismissing me.

I got up and walked out, telling the nurse he was awake.

Then I opened my cell phone and dialed the attorney.

“Steve Bartholemue.”

“Mr. Bartholemue my name is Sam Williams. Jim Adamson asked me to call you. He’s in the hospital along with his granddaughter.”

“Oh? How are they?”

“Kristen’s going to be ok. I don’t know about Jim. But he woke up a few minutes ago and told me to call you. Kristen’s father is coming down here with a lawyer and they’re going to take her away against her will. I don’t know if they can do that but they obviously think they can. Jim thought you might be able to help.”

“They could probably get away with it if nobody stands up to them. You stay right there son. If they get there before me try to delay whatever they have planned. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Ok.” I closed the phone. “Delay, delay. How can I delay them?”

An idea struck me. I turned around and went back to the nursing station in ICU, and walked up to the nurse who had been most flirty when they recognized me.

I looked at her name tag. “Hi Nancy.”

“Oh, hi hero.”

“Listen I need a big favor and I think you might be the right person for the job.”

“Oh yeah? Tell me what you need. If I can help you I will.”

“I need a clerical error.”

About an hour and a half later I was in Kristen’s room when a tall distinguished man around fifty came into the ward followed by three other suits. This had to be Kristen’s dad.

I could tell he was fuming. He was looking in every room trying to find Kristen. Nancy had been a great choice. When I explained my problem she changed Kristen’s room number in the hospital records and all she said afterward was “Oops. I think I made a boo boo. Oh well I’ll fix it later.” and winked at me.

Well the chickens were coming home to roost now and this one was strutting around like a fighting cock (a cock is a male chicken for those of you unfamiliar with barnyard terminology, not a comment on his manhood).

He finally looked in Kristen’s room. He shook his head and went on to the next room.

I smiled. He didn’t recognize his own daughter. She had change so much and he had known the fat Kristen for so long that he didn’t know her now. It was all I could do to keep from busting out laughing.

When he had looked in all the rooms he went to the nursing station. I couldn’t hear what was said but the nurse pointed in our direction. He shook his head. The nurse nodded firmly and pointed again.

Ok. Now the gig is well and truly up.

He came back to the room and looked in. He looked at Kristen. He looked at me. He looked more closely at Kristen

“God damnit! Here they are!” He was clearly furious.

“Hi dad.” Kristen tried to put a good foot forward.

“Are you the asshole that called me?”

“That would be me sir.”

“Daddy, don’t talk to Sam that way.”

“You get the hell away from my daughter and I mean right the hell now!”

I took a deep breath. “Can’t do that sir. I’m responsible for Kristen now, not you. I love her and she loves me and there is nothing you can do to change that. So why don’t we just sit down and discuss this calmly like adults?” I didn’t raise my voice and I don’t know how I accomplished it because I was starting to get really irritated with this guy, but I thought I was keeping a reasonable tone.

I thought he was mad before. Now he erupted like Mt. St. Helens. It was a good thing we were in a hospital because I thought he was going to have a heart attack any second.

“You little creep! Let me tell you something. By this afternoon there will be a restraining order in place and you will not get within five hundred feet of my daughter. I want you out of here and I mean NOW! Jerry,” he turned to the muscle “put this miserable little child molester in the elevator and make sure he gets out the front door!”

The goon stepped into the room towards me and I raised my hands as if in surrender. “Hey no need for violence man, I know when I’m licked. But did you think to ask your daughter what she wants?”

Jerry put his hand on my arm but waited for McBeth’s response.

“Kristen, get dressed, I’m taking you home.”

“No daddy, I’m not going with you and you are not taking me away from Sam!”

“What have you done to my daughter?” he turned on me. “You’ve turned her against me. You’ve turned her against her own family!” More lava spewed. More smoke and ash burned the countryside and smothered every living thing in sight.

“No daddy!” Now Kristen was getting angry and I could see where she inherited her temper from. “You did that all by yourself. You never had time for me, you never listened. All you care about is your stupid properties. I could never talk to you because you never gave me a chance! When I got raped you weren’t there for me! As far as I can tell Sam is the only person to really care about me, me as a person. Just go away and leave us alone!” I could just as easily have ended every sentence here with an exclamation mark. Kristen was really wound up and I thought for a second she was going to get up out of the bed and beat him to death with the new cast they had put on her arm this morning.

But McBeth wasn’t finished. “You hear that?” he said as if they were all witnesses of some damning testimony. “She was raped! He’s got her brainwashed. This is now an intervention, we have to get her away from him. Albert, do what you have to do.”

A little suit with glasses came forward and approached Kristen’s bed.

I tried to push past Jerry to intercept him but that was futile. He grabbed my arm tighter, spun me around and had me in an arm lock before I knew what hit me. I was helpless. I started to yell out but he grabbed a bunch of rubber gloves from a shelf and slapped them into my mouth.

The little guy took a glass bottle and a syringe from the little black bag he carried, filled the syringe from the bottle and pushed it into the IV tube that was connected to Kristen’s arm. Her dad pinned her good arm so she couldn’t rip the needle out.

“Mister, you’d better not push that plunger.” A voice of authority from the doorway. I looked there and saw an older gentleman with four big bruisers behind him. No question, these were all muscle, three were larger than the guy who was holding me.

McBeth turned his head to see who was interfering. “Who the hell are you?!”

“I’m Kristen’s attorney of record.”

“The other guy who came in with McBeth half whispered. “Mr. McBeth, that’s Steve Bartholemue.”

“Jim Adamson’s attorney? I don’t care who you are, you are not stopping me from taking my daughter. You have no right.”

“As a matter of fact I do. I have signed legal documents” he held up a half ream of paper “attested by witnesses indicating that as of right now Kristen is the acting CEO of Adamson Corporation. That means you are physically assaulting the head of a competing company. Furthermore, Kristen has signed an affidavit to wit that Sam Williams is her chief financial advisor. So you are also assaulting an officer of said competitor. And before you go thinking of pressing that plunger ‘doctor’, I assume you are a doctor and not just practicing medicine without a license, let me say that in the case that Ms. McBeth should lose consciousness Mr. Williams here would become acting CEO and there is a Living Will in here somewhere that also gives him power of attorney over her person and property.”

The other attorney laid his hand on McBeth’s arm. “Mr. McBeth, if you do this he’ll sue you.”

“You should listen to your attorney Mr. McBeth. Not only will I sue you, I will drain you ‘til you bleed green. I will press kidnapping charges, assault, administering mind altering drugs to a person against her will, practicing medicine without a license, administering medical treatment without the permission and against the will of the attending physician and I will go to the press and spread the word of how you have maligned the good name of our newest hero.”

“Hero? Who?”

“Why Sam here. Didn’t you know. He’s the one who saved our hospital from a truck bomb yesterday. Do you think the press would like to know how you’ve treated him? How do you think that would affect your chances of becoming our next senator?”

McBeth looked at me, then back at Bartholomue, then back at me. Then I think it finally dawned on him that Bartholomue was accompanied by enough muscle that he had no chance of forcing the issue.

He stormed out, followed by his attorney. The little guy with the syringe shrugged his shoulders and put it back in the little black bag and followed. Jerry released his hold on me and whispered “Good job on the bomb man.” Patted me on the rump and followed the group.

* * *

After everyone had a chance to calm down and Bartholomue dismissed his ‘Secutity Detail’ we had a chance to talk.

“Mr. Bartholomue, I got to hand it to you. That was one beauty of a bluff you put on there, I’m surprised they bought it.”

“Thanks Sam, and call me Steve, we’re going to get to know each other pretty well over next few months. Anyway, most of what I said was true, just this Monday Jim changed his will and the charters for all of his companies. Kristen is now his sole heir and in the event he is incapacitated, like now, she is the acting CEO for all of those companies.”

“What companies?”

He laughed. “Everybody thinks John McBeth is the big real estate mogul in this town but the truth is that his holdings pale in comparison to Jim Adamson’s. In addition to Adamson Corp. there is also Prime Properties, ARM Rental Management, Frontline Commercial Properties, Builtrite Construction, Earthcore Excavation and Paving, Bulk Transportation Company, AM Manufacturing, Shock Electronics, Daring Security and investments in several other companies. He has properties throughout the southwest, from Phoenix to Fresno.”

“Are we talking about the same Jim Adamson here? The guy with the apartments over on 32nd Street?”

He laughed again. “Yep. Jim always liked to keep it low key. He kept very close tabs on all his businesses though, he did it through proxies mostly, me and a few other attorneys.”

Kristen was wide eyed. “He made me his heir?”

Steve nodded. “He was going to split the companies up, sell them off and donate the proceeds to charity. But he had a change of heart recently and changed everything so that you are his sole heir.”

“But I don’t know how to run a company. What would I do? How would I be able to take care of so much?”

I remembered what Jim had said. “That’s what he meant!” They both looked at me expectantly. “Earlier today, when Jim woke up he told me he was leaving everything to you and that I was to help you. I thought he was talking about the apartments.”

“No Sam, it’s a great deal more than the apartments. And I happen to think the two of you will do just fine.”

“But what about my mom?” Kristen asked. “She should get something shouldn’t she?”

“No. Jim was very clear about that. He always suspected that McBeth married his daughter as a way to get possession of Jim’s wealth, so no, nothing goes to Mary.”

There was a long pause as we all reflected on our own thoughts. Then Kristen said “I don’t care about any of that. I just want grandpa to be ok. He will be ok won’t he Sam?”

I took her hand. “I don’t know babe. That’s something I’m afraid I have no control over. But he’s in good hands Kristen. The doctors here are doing their best to help him.”

“I know, it’s just so hard. With everything that’s happened I feel like my life spinning out of control sometimes. Sammy, you’re the one thing in my life that makes sense right now.”

Steve picked up on her comments. “You know Ms. McBeth if you need a counselor or a psychiatrist we can make arrangements for someone to come talk to you.”

“Psychiatrist!” I slapped my forehead. “I have an appointment I have to get to. Steve, is there any chance Kristen’s dad might try something else today?”

“I don’t think so but I am going to assign a couple of men from our security company to keep an eye on her while she’s here.”

“Ok. Kristen, are you going to be ok if I leave for a while?”

“Sure Sam. I’ll be fine.”

“I mean I could probably cancel my appointment and no one would complain but I’d rather keep it if I can.”

“She’ll be fine Sam. I’m going to go up to ICU and check on Jim.”

“All right. Kristen, I’ll be back as soon as I finish my appointment, ok?”

“Ok. I love you Sammy?”

“Me too babe.”

* * *

When I walked into Chahna’s office she closed the door behind me and embraced me in a tight hug. “Oh Sam, I saw it on the news, it was so horrible. I saw what that bomb did, and then I saw it was you. I was so worried about you. Are you ok?”

I was so surprised by this reaction that at first I forgot to hug her back, but I adapted quickly and reciprocated. “I’m fine Chahna, just a little bruised and sore from the beating they gave me.”

“They beat you? Who, the terrorists?”

“Yeah, the terrorists, the police and assorted other goons. But it’s over now and everyone is ok.”

“I’ve never worried about someone so much in my life. I’m so glad you’re ok Sam.”

Finally it seemed to dawn on her that this was not normally how she dealt with her patients and she drew away.

“I’m sorry Sam, I don’t know what came over me. I guess I’m just distraught at the thought of all the deaths that could have been caused by the bomb if it had exploded at the hospital.”

She straightened her suit coat and skirt and walked around to the other side of the desk.

I noticed that her skirt was shorter this week and it seemed like the whole suit fit a little tighter.

“So what prompted you to risk your life like that?”

“Well I had gone to the hospital to see my girlfriend and her grandfather, they’d been beaten up pretty badly by the terrorists too, worse than me, and I saw the van parked out front. I knew it was a bomb so I couldn’t just leave it there to kill them both.”

“Girlfriend?” The tone of this simple question was full of trepidation, uncertainty, fear and insecurity. She wasn’t only interested professionally. Of course I knew the underlying reasons for her anxiety, she was slowly falling in love with me and she just found out there was another woman.

I’d been avoiding the subject of Kristen up ‘til now, but today I wasn’t even thinking about it and it slipped out. Ok, cards on the table time.

“Yeah. Sorry Chahna I should have told you about her. It was right after... um... about my second appointment with you I think. You told me I should be more assertive so I tried it on my landlord’s granddaughter, and it worked wonderfully. After a few days she came to me begging to be my love slave. I mean she was calling me Master and bowing and kneeling, and did I mention she’s gorgeous?”

“You can’t be serious. What did you tell the little... er, what did you tell her?”

Ah, jealousy rears its ugly head.

“Well it was a lot to absorb. But the idea had some appeal, after all, I’m only human. So I told her that I would accept her as a slave, but she would have to understand from the beginning that there would be other women.”

Chahna’s mouth came open but nothing came out.

“Anyway she said that would be fine and she moved in that very night.”

Chahna was still speechless for half a minute. She finally smiled and looked relieved. “Oh Sam, your putting me on. You almost had me going there for a minute. Ha ha. Very funny.”

“Chahna.” I waited for her to give me her full attention. “I’m absolutely serious as a heart attack. Turns out she has a lot of money, though I didn’t know it at the time, so she rented the apartment next door and joined the two apartments so we would have another bedroom available when I bring other girls home.”

Now she was beyond speechless. She was breathing really deeply and just staring at me, and she looked a little flush.

“Chahna are you ok?”

She shook her head and slowly stood up with her hands still on the desk. “I’ll be right back.” she said huskily and left the room.

Interesting. I wasn’t sure how to interpret her actions. Either she found the idea of sharing me with another beautiful woman totally hot and she needed time to cool down or I had just broken her heart and she was crying her eyes out. The strange thing was, I didn’t feel too bad about hurting her, if that’s what I’d done, because I knew that in the long run I was going to be able to make her happy.

This realization was an important one. Previously I would never be able to just stand by and see someone else in emotional pain without at least trying to ‘make it better’. I felt I was making progress.

When Chahna came back into the room she was much more composed. She sat behind her desk and was all business.

“All right Sam, so you’ve clearly made some progress in being more assertive and taking control. How do you feel your relationship with your new... girlfriend fits in with the goals we’re trying to achieve with these sessions?”

“Well, like you said, I’m making some progress. But now that you ask the question, I realize that I’m still obsessed with making her happy. Is that normal in a relationship or is that my old obsession coming through? I don’t know. But I do know that I have definitely taken control in Kristen’s case, I call her my six armed goddess.”

As always, Chahna went under as soon as the last word of the trigger phrase was out of my mouth.

She made a little whimpering sound and clutched the edge of her desk.

“Chahna, what did you just feel?”

“I had a little orgasm.”

“Why?”

“Because you took control of me.”

Interesting. “How did you feel today when I told you I had a girlfriend?”

“I felt jealousy and confusion.”

“Please explain in more detail.”

“I am very attracted to you. I shouldn’t be. I haven’t been attracted to a man since I was sixteen. When you said you had a girlfriend I felt left out, like I was losing you, and I was saddened by it.”

“And as I told you about my relationship with her, how did your feelings develop?”

“When you told me she wanted to be your love slave I almost came. I suddenly felt that I wanted to be your love slave too. But I felt I had missed my chance with you because you had her.”

“Then when you told me that you could have more than one woman at a time I was very aroused and excited, I knew I still had a chance, and somehow sharing you with another woman seemed right.”

Cool. “Ok Chahna, I want you to continue telling your story from where you left off last week.”

So she talked about how she had finished boarding school and had gone on to UCLA to get her degree. There was a lot of experimentation with other girls during this time but no permanent relationship.

I stopped her because we were already out of time. I told her what she was to remember from our session and woke her up.

“By the way Chahna, that invitation for lunch still stands, are you free tomorrow?”

“Yes!... Er, I mean, yes I think that would be ok Sam.” She was beaming.

“Good. There is a decent Japanese restaurant right across the street from here, would that be ok?”

“Yes. That would be fine.”

“Excellent. I’ll meet you there right at twelve o’clock.”

She walked me to the door, but before she could open it I gave her a hug. She reciprocated.

As I walked out I heard a satisfied sigh behind me.

* * *

When I got back to the hospital I found Kristen’s room empty and I had a moment of panic. But I asked at the nursing station and they said she had gone to ICU to sit with her grandfather.

When I got to ICU they told me there was no change in Jim’s condition. They usually didn’t allow more than one visitor at a time but they made an exception for me.

I found Kristen sitting by Jim’s bed with a sling around her neck supporting her broken arm, and one of those IV trees, you know, the ones that look like an aluminum hat rack, they hang IV bags on them and patients can roll them around.

It was clear she had been crying. “Hi babe. How’s he doing?”

“Oh Sammy. I’m so glad you’re back. My mom came while you were gone and tried to talk me into going home. She was awful to me, she said I was betraying my family. But I didn’t care, I know you are my family now Sammy. I don’t need anyone else.” Then she looked at Jim. “Except, I wish grandpa would come back to me.”

“I’m sorry I wasn’t here when your mom came Kristen, that must have been hard.” I stood beside her and took her good hand in mine.

“Yeah, it was pretty uncomfortable, but just knowing I had you for a Master gave me strength I didn’t know I had. Grandpa has been asleep the whole time I’ve been here. I wish he would wake up so I could at least tell him I love him.” That thought was too much for her and she started to cry again. I didn’t know what to do for her so I just held her hand and let her get it out of her system.

I bowed my head and thought ‘Come on Jim, wake up, Kristen needs you.’

Then I heard very weakly “Hello little girl.”

“Grandpa! You’re awake!”

Wow. Good timing.

“So tired.” said Jim. “Love you little girl. Want you to be happy. My legacy.”

“Oh I love you too grandpa! And I am happy, I’ve never been so happy. I just want you to get better.”

“I know.” He looked at me. “Thank you. You’re a good man.” Then he drifted off to sleep again.

We waited around for about an hour after that and then Kristen was tired so I walked her back to her room. That was when I noticed a big guy following at a distance. I was concerned until I remembered that Steve had said he would have someone here to watch her.

When we got back in her room Kristen said “Sam, I watched some TV today. They’re still talking about the truck bomb, and they have video of you talking to the police. They’re all wondering who the mystery man is who saved the hospital. I’m so proud that you’re my Master.”

“Really? I haven’t had a chance to see any news. Do you mind if I turn it on for a little bit?”

She nodded and handed me the remote. I flipped through a few channels until I found a local news report that had a “Breaking News” caption at the bottom.

“Just to recap,” the anchor woman was saying “we have confirmation on the identity of the local man who saved our hospital yesterday. His name is Sam Williams and he lives in these apartments at 10337 32nd Street.” There was footage outside my apartment which included shots of several TV news vans hanging out in front of the apartment building. “We are currently trying to secure an interview with Mr. Williams and will keep you posted on further developments.”

“As you know, the three terrorists were pursued by police and Homeland Security agents and were cornered at this empty lot at the corner of 19th and Magnolia.” There was footage of what looked like a SWAT team or soldiers, taking cover behind vehicles and shooting at something. “All three were fatally wounded in the ensuing gun battle. Two police officers were also wounded but their wounds were not life threatening.”

“We also learned today that there was a fourth member of the terrorist group who was taken into custody and has apparently been cooperating with the authorities. Our preliminary information indicates that she is a young woman who attended the university here in town. Sources report that she claims she was inducted into the group against her will and that she had been waiting for an opportunity to escape. She will be arraigned tomorrow morning at ten AM in the Federal court.”

“In other news...”

I turned it off.

“Well Kristen, I don’t think I’ll be going home tonight. Guess I’ll have to find a hotel room. If no one shows up those reporters should be gone by tomorrow.”

Just then a doctor came in and smiled at us. “Hello. How is our patient feeling this afternoon? Are you having much pain?” He picked up Kristen’s chart and examined it.

“It’s not too bad doctor.”

“Good. I think I’ll be releasing you this evening. Your injuries are not very extensive and the swelling is down on the arm. It will probably take an hour or so to get everything processed. Until then just relax. The nurses will tell you when you can go.”

“Thank you doctor.”

He left the room. “Kristen, since you’ll be getting out tonight we’re both going to need a place to stay. I’ll get us a hotel room. How about the Royal Regent Hotel? It’s right down the street so we can come see you grandfather any time we want to.”

“Yes Sammy that would be fine. Thank you for taking that into consideration, I don’t want to be too far away from him right now.”

“Ok. I’ll be right back.”
